I put my foot down and still passed. The guy said all they are looking for is proper head checks and indicating so foot down didn't matter. Could be different with a different tester though!
I literally just done it an hour a go and i cant remember if it was that one - what i do know is that it wasnt hard compared to the u-turns i was trying to practice. Hardcase, the officer hit the back of me at a give way - tut tut. I just remembered heaps of head checks, mirrors, indication, both feet on the ground at full stops, headlight on.

I would have got off and called the cops to a rearending accident. Then hit him up for a new rear tire :corn:

He was an older guy - he failed someone before coming to me at the 5xroads aa. he didnt seem overly strict. as soon as i felt the bump, first was shock, looked in the mirror and it was him, then had to subdue the anger as if he'd split the rear fender that will be a bit of $ to replace.
I did pass and thanks. I had the tools in the panier bag to get rid of the L plate which I promptly did at the carpark once I got the temp 6R.

See, this actually really annoys me. Even, for example, if the tester thought it was clear to go and was surprised you didn't, number 1 rule is your priority is the car in front. That's really poor form.
Of course I may be blowing it out of proportion but a hits a hit. But it does give a bloody bad example to up and coming drivers if the tester isn't even courteous to fellow road users.
Well done though :) You're well on your way to being able to legally ride a scream machine haha

Now I had time to rest after taking the afternoon off with the kids to watch the Smurfs (yay) I recall the following:
- Lots of turning, indications, give-ways and one stop sign (put both feet on ground)
- Kids in built up area, no dogs, 1 cyclist (make a point to turn head to watch out for them)
- Tap the side of the helmet to get tester to repeat instructions if the radio is unclear
- Two lane roundabout that proceeded to 80km area after a 30km area of road works (ensure to do 30km)
- Roundabout at 5xroads on return trip to base
- If made mistake, slowly and indicate to pull to the left, head check, indicate right and return to correct path
- 1 U-Turn. Mine was wide and easy but I know of one other person's Uturn test was narrow and I still could not do it without a foot on the road. So I didn't stress about it and moved on to other points of the practice.
- headlight on
- Took about 15mins
Testing Officer:
- Besides lightly tapping my rear fender at the give way, he was non-threatening and friendly
- He didn't take my licence off me - but did sight it. I thought they were suppose to hold it during the test.
- He mentioned I was allowed to do 80km at a certain section of road - this I thought no longer matters due to law change mid last year.
- Pre-ride check indicators, light, wof, reg, lplate, foot brake, hand brake (not horn). I assumed he checked the cc of the bike as the hyogv250 looks much bigger than a gn250, for example.
- He went on before the test about the route - don't freak on this because I lost track of what he was saying and I said that to him.
- Didn't give me feedback unless I asked - maybe he thought because of my age that I didn't give a damn about feedback and just wanted my licence. I actually do care as I want to be better.
The hardest:
- Knowing if my speedo was right but I let the officer know.

My ride for this Sunday, Back roads to Piopio, cut across, via Te Mapara to HW4, Kopaki rd, back to TeKuiti, home.
Will do it alone or if anyone wants to tag along, they're welcome. I'll leave Te A Caltex about 9.30.
You still riding this route tomorrow awa355?
awa355
21st January 2012, 15:22
Yep, If I/WE get onto SH4 and dont feel like doing the Kopaki loop, we can always just come up 4 to Te Kuiti. Have been told it's all sealed but may have the odd roadworks. I want to do the backroads to Piopio and thru Aria.
Another option could be, from Aria down Totoro rd and hit HW3 just above Mahoenui. My mob is 027 6923454.
If I know for sure, someone wants to tag along, we can leave anytime from 8.30, 10 at the latest.
If I go on my own, I will continue up Oparure rd past Mairoa rd and ride thru Ngapaenga, Waitanguru. Piopio. This stretch has a fair bit of gravel so wont suit most riders. I'll have a couple of maps with me.

I'll be giving it a miss as went for a fairly long ride today, pays to watch out for tractors and trucks on country roads at present as a couple nearly took me out today, coming around corners and taking up all the road.

What time?
Nailz, I do opologise for not waiting right to the stated time. I had been there since 8.45 and by the time I left, a bit before 9.30. no one had showed so I thought "Buggar this, I'm going". Have sent a private message to you,
As for the run, it was neat. Light rain and drizzle for much of it ( 140 miles, k's?). I think the rain added something to the trip. Now to look for a pair of rainproof trousers.
The road from Piopio thru Aria, Mokauiti rd is brilliant. My 1st time through here, Ramaroa rd to HW4 fairly rough and patchy.
Have included a few photos taken on the Mairoa rd above Piopio, The Aria hotel?? and looking back at the country form the Ramaroa rd with the rain sweeping across. the valley.

Is your Hyosang a cruiser or the sports model? I'm free most afternoons/evenings for rides. Not much interested in riding around town. Far nicer to do a ride on the country roads.

Glenn from Boyd Motorcycles is running a one day ride on the 29th of January from Hamilton to Mike's Brewery in the Naki for lunch. Departs Boyds at 9:30am and follows some of Waikato's most stunning roads. I have already penciled it in my calendar (weather dependant ofcourse) :msn-wink:

mmmm decisions decisions, I wouldn't mind doing the Boyds ride this weekend but to do that I don't go with the missus to the in-laws in New Plymouth. And by not going I could get a crap load done at home to warrant going for a ride. But the ride goes practically to New Plymouth, which means I would have to at least pop into the in-laws...
Might have to see how things are tomorrow and Saturday. Or I could just do the ride on Monday. I should really start Sonic II. Been a while.

10 bikes left the Hotel at 10am with Shona showing off her new Gladius and D&M not coming after being to tired from their 3,000km south island trip.
Great conditions and good roads. Surprisingly everyone was in cruise mode and the 10 bikes pretty will ran as one group most of the way. Stopped at Kaiaua for a nice lunch and drink and decided to head back Clevedon way. All going great until Marks suspension stuffed out and locked up his back wheel. Nice tyre track and cloud of tyre smoke but he did well to keep it upright and not come off. Parked it up, pillioned back to hamilton. Many many thanks to dave and Tony who arranged a trailor back in Hamilton and went and picked it up. Last I heard at about 8.00 pm last night they were heading back with the bike. Back to the ride, we stopped at mercer for a Frappe (ask Kevie what that is if you dont know) and the guys orgainised the bike pick up then and staright back to Hams. Approx 265kms and good weather throughout and good company. Great to see the offers of help and assistance.
Caught up with Milan later in the day and planned a ride for next Monday (Waitangi day). Going to do Kihikihi, Mangakino, old taupo road, Arapuni, karapiro. Approx 220km with lunch at the Bus Stop cafe (NO EFTPOS). Some of the best roads in the Waikato so start arranging the day off and get your weekend work done on the Saturday & Sunday to leave Monday free. leaving Kingsgate Hotel carpark at 10 am and breakfast deal on from 9.00 am. I more than likely would have been keen on this if it was Sunday. I'm being "schooled" on Monday. Got a bit done in the weekend so may go for another ride this weekend coming to get into the groove again.
Also, regarding the trailer, if anyone has any problems with their bikes and needs a trailer in the future, let me know. The past few weekends I've been teaching myself welding and have made up some wheel chocks that bolt into our trailer. Makes loading bloody easy. My welds will be getting a good test on Monday so if you hear I'm getting another bike next week - I need more practice :) They've held up to some decent "testing" so far - chock 4, concrete/hammer 0

See the amazing Hyosung transform into a cruiser before your very eyes! Gasp at the smell of the tyre smoke!! Thrill to the crazy fishtail motion and try to stop before it does!!!
So how, exactly, can you *break* a swingarm? Two photos attached (one for each piece). One is the shock linkage with part of the swingarm still attached, the other is looking up from below to whence it came. Nice one, eh? I am really not happy about this and what the consequences could have been ...
What I am happy about is how great everyone was! Thanks for the moral support, the help stashing the bastard (I'm still not on speaking terms with 'that bike'), a ride home and extra thanks for Dave and Tony for coming on a return trip with Tony's trailer. You guys have all been truly awesome.

What scares me the most is the ammount of corrosion inside of the frame as well as around the break. Personally I would be going back to Hyosung NZ and having them investigate it. This is a serious safety issue and one that the company might have to investigate further. I wander how many other owners had similar experience??

That's just nuts!! Surely an integral part of the structure of any vehicle should not just fail like that with it being involved in an accident. Seems a bit dodgy to me. I can totally get if it's just a freak thing but I'd still be telling the distributors. Not to get anything, just to make sure they are confident. That would be a lawsuit in the states. Hell, muppet drivers got their way when they kept flipping their SUVS.

The rusty area is the inside of the ripped-open swingarm and there's quite a bit on the exhaust, but the actual frame itself looks ok. I expect the rust weakened the swingarm but it was pretty light to start with. I'll definitely follow this up - I was very lucky it happened on a nice level straight and it could be a time-bomb for other owners.
I found this about a UK recall for this same model: http://korider.com/index.php?topic=7715.0 The there picture looks pretty damn similar.

Straight to Hyosung NZ mate and don't stop belting their front desk until you see a new bike in your garage. No BS this is worth that at least. Imagine you'd come off and no one had picked that it was because of a failure of a major component of the bike. This is failure of the worst kind and warrants any and all forms of redress.
As for the W L O R looking after people mate I'd be glad if I had a problem and was riding with them, great folk they are.

It is still a serious issue, and if there is a record of recalls in other country, then surely they still have to look at the failure here in NZ. Otherwise, how many other timebombs are out there on the roads? I think this is a case of extremly good luck that it happened on a straight piece of road with no oncomming traffic. The consequences could have been much worse. After all, you don't see many bikes, old or new having a major failures of swing arms. And this looks like the corosion would have severely weakened the structure. Also by the look of these pics, the crack was there for quiet a while, and it just grew more untill it failed. You can check that by checking the corosion around the crack in the alloy

Not sure who you would go to ..... maybe talk to LTSA and they can advise on the procedure to alert a vehicle defect in NZ here, but consumers institute surely would know.
I recon print off the overseas info you found and talk to the NZ distributor of the bike, show then pics of your frame and failure and the comparable overseas recall photos to show its their failure not rough treatment, even a roughly ridden bike should handle the frame stresses.
Suggest to them you are planning to take it to Consumers, the LTSA and media and I'm sure they will do all they can to "keep you quiet" might get a new bike out of it, to repair yours would require re-certification and all the bullshit that goes with it

Apart from the little 'blow out' through the forest, which could have lightened the wallet somewhat ...:Police:...... the so called 'speed demons' kept it at just a tad over 110 most of the day. The experiance the front guys have, means that, at that pace there's not too many corners that slow us down. That's where we tend to pull away from the middle group & the TEC's. At no stage during the day did the front guys wait for more that 3-4 mins for the TEC (except when we lost MzTulip  ). A very enjoyable ride considering the 18 bikes & range of experiance. LOR continue to encourage all levels of ability on our rides and always will.

Plans are well progressing well, looks like we will meet the NP leg riders at Te Kuiti mid afternoon then into Hn the shortest way, on to Akld and the relay on Nth Shore.
I',m planning to ride Te Kuiti to Akld. looks like there will be a good number riding with the baton all the way.
I'm looking to get to the club night wed if work allows and give as much inf as I can, if I can't get there I text you.

I saw one officer while I was behind car&boat. I assume s/he looked in the rear vision while watching us zoom past, and took note of regos? Cause if thats the case I'd better start putting aside some $
Nah you'll be right mate, no way they could read your plate from rear view mirror.
Advantage of riding in a group is Popos doesn't know which bike he locked on to, mind you they could try and do all riders so big advantage in not being last:niceone:

I know the Daytona's speedo is out by about 6kms. Brooke followed me in the car once and said I was riding like a nana. Followed her and I was doing 112 on the bike when she said she was 109. Obviously the car's out too. I get the same 6km/h differences from all the speed signs I go past. Never done the phone check thing. I really should get a waterproof phone mount for my bike as well. Although I'm yet to use GPS on it (maybe cause I don't have a mount :))

You will find every speedo ever made probably reads fast. My XVS650 reads four k's faster than the GPS at a 100kph. And thats more accurate than my CBF250 and my Nissan Pulsar were.
A TV programme looked at car speedo reading errors last year. An indicated 8 kph faster than the true speed at 100kph isn't unusual.
Years ago, I was told it is due to the twist that occurs in the speedo cable between the front hub and the dial. I dont know whether that's true or not, or if electricaly wired speedos are more accurate.

Get a Speedo Healer, most speedos are out by 5-10% plus different sprockets/profile tyres muck up your speedo as well.
They are real easy to install and calibrate.

Electronic speedos are no more accurate. My gixxer was +9% until I speedohealed it...

USUALLY...quite apart from the fact that you need baby sized hands to get to the wiring on the gixxer, my speedohealer had a component that was a fraction off spec. My bike and two others in the world would not work with it in place. SpeedoTech had to make me up several units before they got one to work. I should add that they went to enormous efforts to get it right. But the speedo is now totally in agreement with the GPS. Until the tyres wear down that is. Then it's 1% out...

speedo healer is over 150$ even at my reduced rate of purchase. i can borrow the misses android phone, get a waterproof casing mount for 50$ at most, download a free android gps speedo app that works on full display (almost 4"). tested in the car on Saturday on the way to raglan and proved very successful - so next is a bike mount.
Issues and solutions:
1. Sun glare = get "sun visor" for the casing
2. Battery power = take spare battery
3. Rain (not sure on this one yet)
4. Getting pinched = take it out of case and use the unit for its original intent, a phone
There will be other issues such as gps loss in tunnels etc but the idea is to get a feeling on how much the speed is out by so can stick to speed limit if kiwi law decides to make the 4km speed threshold permanent. We pay enough in regos and fuel tax - no need to give any more.
The other core benefit of using the phone is that if TEC gets sick of following me one day, I can at try and find my way back via google maps / navigator. (if there is service)
This article reminded me of my near miss with Mark 3 weekends ago with the lor group ride to Kaiaua:

I'm away this weekend so if anyone wants to plan a ride please do so. Paeroa races are on and thats always a good option for a Sunday ride, we have been a couple of times over previous years and well worth going if you haven't been. Set ups pretty good too with storage areas for your gear at about $5 a bag and some good bike gear stalls and facilities to watch some pretty good racing.
Following week is Westpac Helicopter Ulysses ride in Auckland leaving Karaka at 9.00 a.m. I think. I will be looking at going on this as it is a hugely worthwhile cause to assist. Unfortunately Bikes, Blues and BBQ is not on the same day this year and we have to wait or 01 April for that ride!!!

All vehicle manufacturers build in a a speedo tolerance. They say it's in the interests of safety (if you're going to use the speed limit as a target we'll help make you drive/ride slower) but I'd say it's more to do with covering their asses.
Get a Speedo Healer, most speedos are out by 5-10% plus different sprockets/profile tyres muck up your speedo as well.

I don't have an issue with speedo inaccuracies unless it was say 10km/h out. It's always a nice "bonus" if you ever get pulled up being a criminal thinking you were doing 20km/h over the limit and you're told you were only doing 12km/h over . Do not reply "really? I thought I was going faster" haha

BTW: From my experience last time, I would not start off in the slowest group. There were too many real beginners holding up the track. The middle group looked a lot better for anything bigger than a 250. Mind you, I'm sure you could start in the slow one for your first few laps, then go up if you wanted too.
It's an awesome experience, and the track is wicked. The smoothness alone blew me away, its just so god dam smooth.

Three riders havent seen this song for a while.
Bit of a crock, heading to the Toyrun and turning left onto Morrinsville road coppa coming from left does U turn in front of the group (12 bikes) and pings the first 3 for not stopping at the stop sign "didnt see a foot going down". Dont know how he can see whether the right leg went down onto the ground and what the hell is he doing, doing a U turn in front of the group!!

"Sorry officer but we have sufficient witnesses to call bullshit. You had no way of knowing, and we also have sufficient witnesses to deem your U-turn to be extremely unsafe and nearly cause 4 vehicles to crash if it wasn't for their superior skills.
Tell you what, forget about the bullshit 'failure to stop' allegation and we'll forget about the 3 counts of careless driving you preformed"
Officer: "bite me!"

He would have looked at it from the angle that none of the leading 3 actually came to a complete halt which would require a foot to be placed on the ground, As it was pointed out to me by a chap in a Blue boiler suit sometime ago " A stop sign means exactly that, STOP " $80 fine & 20 D points if I remember correctly :weep::weep::weep:

Didnt know a foot down was compulsory to complete a stop, cause I can get a foot down whilst moving (well rolling slowly anyhow) and also can come to a complete stop and not put my feet down (but not for long)...
Still think the coppa was an arsehole, can we swap him for Rastuscat maybe?

Wether or not we stopped is not my issue and it will be challenged , but from where he was parked , it would be very unlikely he could see any of us put our right foot on the ground and that was one of his factors he stated in determining we didn't stop.
The other real issue was that on a main highway - he completed a U turn in front of us which required the front bikes to brake quite firmly to pull up behind him. Given the tragic results just last year with exactly the same maneuver, in front of a bike , i would expect the Popo to be a little more circumspect in even attempting to U turn in front of bikes !!!!
What the officious little man also seemed to ignore that most of us had soft toys strapped to the bikes and obviously heading out to participate in a worthy cause. What really pissed me off more - I saw him an hour later marshaling at Cambridge at the very event we were heading to - Tosser
On a nice clear day with good visibility up the road (2 k's at least) and turning left, a warning could have been an option if he felt we were being a little keen to proceed through a stop sign ( Not that we did )

Good turn out at the "clubrooms" last night an looks like a few keen for a ride this Sunday.
If the weather holds out we are looking at heading down to Okoroire via French pass?
Saturday 10
Cloudy periods increasing. Light winds.
Sunday 11
Becoming cloudy, and rain developing. Northeast breezes
Leaving Kingsgate Hotel carpark at the later time of 11.00 am should be back by 3.00ish.
Please register in Calendar if going

So if Sunday looks to be worse then Saturday, then wouldn't it make more sense to ride on Saturday?

We ride Sundays as a lot of the people we ride with work Saturdays or have sporting/children committments etc.
People are more than welcome to arrange times outside of Sunday

Do any of you guys or girls have taillights with the indicators built into them? is so what do you think of them, do they do the job well enough or does it seem like people dont notice them( more than they usually dont notice bikes)
Ive found a nice one for my bike but not sure weather they are practical enough. Thought id see what peoples thoughts on them are.

I tried to fit an integrated tail light/indicator unit to my Daytona and it failed WOF in two shops here in Hamilton. Was told they were too close to the centre of the bike and not visible from side angles. Had to take them off again. Some others might got away with it, but I would check with your local WOF retailer to make sure it still will be legal

I have one and I think 5150 has one (EDIT: there you go...testing people don't like him :)). But that's cause we're cool and ride Daytona's :) As for what I think of them, I like them hence why I have one but I also know mine is noticeable. I've seen one on a 6R and you couldn't see shit. Dunno what year that was. His was built different to mine in that when he braked and indicated, the side would flash amber than bright red so it was hard to tell the difference. With mine, when I indicate and brake, the red on the indicator side would turn off so it's much more noticeable.
His was also on a weird angle without the actual LEDS having a wide enough viewing angle.
My last WOF they mentioned I needed some extra indicators because they weren't really sure about it. I've since put a black strip of LEDS on my subframe but I was always going to do that. It wasn't because they said.
The way I figure, as long as people behind can see the brake light they'll slow down. If you're turning right, you move to the right so it's not like they're going to cut you off from behind. It's the front indicators that need the most attention. My opinion anyway.
The definitely tidy things up though.

In the interests of your own safety, it makes sense to use indimicators that are visible to the side as well as from directly behind or in front. I see lots of vehicles (not just bikes) using indicators that are not very visible from side on. Why add more risk?
Forget how they look. Think about how well they do the job of letting other road users know where you are going.

I didn't miss one of those once years ago...zoomed past the car and busted the indicator off...with my shoulder. Gave wider berth after that. :o
edit: Just in case you are wondering, the car was parked, the indicator stuck at out position. And it was my car. In my driveway...sigh.

It was a fun ride out to Okororie last Sunday, and was nice to meet you guys.
Highlight: Besides getting out on the Buell, seeing the pub dog take off with one of Marks new gloves. It took him a good 5 mins or so to get them back, meanwhile he gained quite an audience.
Will post some pics of the fiasco soon

Yeah thats what has me a bit iffy about them is the visibility of them hence why i asked what peoples experiences with them are. i do want to be seen but would still like to get rid of the ugly factory ones and make it look a bit nicer, i like ckai's idea of adding the LED strips. might look into that, that way i get a tidy look but still have good visibility.

If I can be assed, I might take a pic of the rear tonight. It's not as nice as I wanted but it was stupidly cheap with the LED's ($7 shipped for both strips I think). Ultimately I would have drilled individual LEDS into the tail. I've seen pictures and it looks bloody good. But I also like doing things that are reversible.
I think my set up looks alright. No one can say they're too close to the centre because they actually sit further out than where the stock indicators would sit.

Trademe is a very "no go zone" for electronic stuff. I got them off eBay. In fact I'd probably look on ebay first then look on Trademe to compare. You pay stupid money for NZ dealers on LED stuff.
Just search on ebay for amber led or whatever you're looking for. You might be surprised how cheap stuff. They come from Hong Kong generally.
