On Wednesday, I'm going to do a ride through the back roads to Oto and onto Te Kuiti via the Rangitoto area. and back to Te A without hitting the highway. I've hammered the Waitomo side of HW3 so will stay on the eastern side of the main road.
Had thought it may be a backup for a sunday group ride if ever needed. I anticipate about 150ks.
If weather is crap, I'll go anyway. A good excuse to sharpen up the wet weather skills.
Anybody wants to come along, I will leave the Caltex sv stn. at 10am.
That sounds like a fun route.

Went for my ride as mentioned above. A brilliant run. Down to Oto, Otewa rd, Barber rd,( tight ) Rangatoto rd into Te Kuiti, 43 miles/75's?. Great scenery.
In behind the airstrip and along various roads back on to Otewa rd. Over Toa bridge, The road surfaces were all good. Toa bridge back to Te Kawa,( Mahihi, Ngahape rd's) fantastic, smooth sweeping bends.
I had thought this might've been a good group ride but having done it, maybe too many turn off's. Heaps of 40-70kph corners. (on a cruiser). Big sports bikes might find the tight roads a bit slow over a long distance.
All up about 150ks from Te Awamutu return.

I had tried not to use the main roads at all, From Te A, I travelled the Pokuru rd, Slofox's map would suit Hamilton riders better.
Rangitoto rd had loose chips on some corners, following seal patching.,
Returning from Te Kuiti, I took the Hangatiki east road (behind the airstrip), onto the old Te Kuiti rd, 2nd right into Puketawai, left into Whawharua, ( smooth and curvy),left into Tahaia, 2nd right into Hewer rd. Back onto Otewa rd, turned right, and up to Toa bridge, Tauraroa valley rd, 2nd left into Mahihi rd, Whibley, Ngahape rd and straight run back to HW3 at Te Kawa.
This is where I thought there would be too many turn offs for a large group ride.

I would suggest a large number of us have been through most of these roads at one point & having riders 1,2 or even 3 pulling over at turning points I'm sure we would get around OK, worked great on the Pyes Pa ride..... ideal loop for winter days when time is a crucial factor & I'm sure even us BIG SPORTS TOURERS could make it around without to much fuss :innocent:

Is that why Harley riders travel in groups? So they can all help with lifting each others front wheel around at corners? Now I know what those front mounted highway pegs are really for, something to hold onto.

Thought the forklifts were for assisting the riders off the bike at the end of the ride?
Anyway would be nice to see a few Harleys on the runs. Then I can ride behind one and pretend that exhaust note is coming from my bike.

Herald report
"Heavy rain is forecast for parts of the Bay of Plenty and central North Island today with up to 130mm possible in some areas in the next 24 hours.
But the downpour should be the last for at least the next 10 days."
Depending on the weather, I might divert to Papanui and nail the Tagarama Tag, if it's still current, and I'm not riding with a group.

Anything else i am not too fussed over. But considering my current financial situation it will be a long time before i actually get a big bike (400 is safe enough to learn on i reckon so not exactly a 'big bike').

I done mine in Huntly... To be honest, I couldn't think of anywhere easier. Apart from the main road, there are absolutely NO hazards in Huntly during the day, it might as well be a desert town. But I'm sure the Full Test would be easy in Hamilton too? but if your looking for somewhere easy, Huntly could be where its at... The guy who tested me only done a half ass test because a) his wireless headphone batteries were flat:facepalm:, b) he said it looked like I could ride ok  and that same testing guy is still there at the moment, I saw him yesterday.

How did the LOR ride go today?
My mate Phill and I decided that an 11 oclock start, was half the day gone, so went for a run this morning. Te A to Putaruru through some back roads, on to Tok.
The road to Whakamaru was in good nick, met up with the Rotorua Ulysses riders at the cafe there. They must be even older than us, half were riding three wheelers.
Phill and I turned off onto the Bennydale rd. Excellent surface and no traffic, Te Kuiti and up HW3 back home. Apart from a few bikes, these roads were almost empty. Just had to watch some of the shaded wet corners. Frosts come early down there and stay longer.
I've got untill next Weds off work so hope to get a few rides in.

12 Bikes left with 3 Pillion passengers - Went through TA and towards Otoranhanga and turned off to the east and ended up at Wharepapa cafe, where we met up with a group of bikes from Rotorua. 178 kms on the clock when parking up. Great ride and roads (thanks Milan for the route) and only downside was Warr getting a flat which a pando and bung could not fix.
Never mind theres a nice bike on the side of the road somewhere for someone. Thanks to those who pillioned Warren and his pillion back to Hams. How many scrapes was it Glenn?? First one was pulling out of the cafe and seemed like only inches to spare from bike to road many times.
Was a nice route to get around till my front tyre went flat! I have some days off so are heading off later for the recovery.
I located the phone number for the place I left it and made contact with them, so all good.
Many thanks to Quasi and Glenn for the return leg of the journey.

It was a great ride! I loved the Ngaroma Road. Great weather too. I was wearing my new warm thick gloves yesterday and had trouble finding the indicator button, so sorry to all those who noticed when I thought my indicator was on but it wasn't! I ended up tooting quite a bit because I hit the horn instead! (fat lot of use...). At least I didn't drop my bike this time eh Milan!
Didn't we head East from Otorohanga Murray? And - did anyone notice Murray was SPEEDING on the way back after Te Awamutu? Shame on you Murray (you can stop lecturing me now ;-))

Just love the country through Ngaroma - farmland like NZ was like 50 yrs ago - no multi million dollar diary farms, no large herds , & just the good old homesteads on drystock runs - love it. Its very much like SH 43 I reckon. The road was in pretty good nick as well & I don't think I saw a car anywhere through there ?? & mztulip we have no indicators to replace this time :), & misred managed to stay on the tarmac all day as well LOL (but don't tell her I said that!!)

The reason Murray speeds on the way back is generally because it takes about 200km for the Honda to wind up to the legal limit :) He doesn't have the heart to slow it down
Love Ngaroma Rd as well. Only done it once and always wanted to jump on it again. Bugger I was flat out this weekend 'cause it would have been a good ride. My loss.

The roads around there always seem to be pretty sweet. In the middle of winter they can get surprisingly icy in the shade though. They are super cool roads. Flowing corners and the crazy tight stuff is at a minimum.
PS: Does anyone else have a problem with using the "go to first unread post" button. The map put up by bi-winning earlier confuses my computer and it ends up bouncing back to the map putting the cursor in the search field of it. Trying to work out if it was just me and maybe my browser.

So i don't have a 250 for my license next week
The GPX has a WOF (although not according to carjam?) but Marie hasn't paid the rego (she rides it everyday not me figured she would take care of it!).
Tried Ham Honda they have an XR250 but not so sure about riding a dual purpose for the first time while sitting a test...
Could rego the GPX but that would mean finding money that i dont have from somewhere.

Don't want to be a pain and borrow someones bikes so will see what other stores have. $70 day hire is what it would cost to register the GPX anyway (or close enough!). Have a week to organise it so no panic yet.

Hi 5150, welcome. there are a number of rides available in Hamilton - Ulysses are quite active, (Jim generally meets with us at Te rapa tavern Wednesday nights) Honda ran a Thursday night ride i think and Boyds have regular rides?? (both tend to be faster paced rides) and We (LOR) generally ride Sunday mornings afternoons. If you want to search back through this thread and the preceeding thread (search back a long way) we are pretty much a social group with the emphasis being on the ride and making the destination safely. (We are not there to race) We have a number of female riders and pillions that come along and while the leaders are very good riders and travel at higher speeds we have a group (me, myself and I) that travel at the back to match the slowest speed. we try not to lose anyone and accommodate all levels of skills and size of bikes. rides stop for a coffee break along the way and are generally weather or event dependent. More often than not if a ride is organised it will go in the calendar section (the one on Sunday didnt for some reason?). Be nice to see you along or at the "clubrroms" on a Wednesday some time (bout 5.30-6pm), generally all travel by car to the clubrroms on Wednesday so you may find us at a table by all the TV screens if you come along.
Yes I'm bored today and counting down to 5ish!!

The Honda hamilton rides were Thursday evenings, but they haven't sent out a ride notification in quite a few weeks; I think they've gone into hibernation for winter as it gets dark early now.
As for the Boyd rides, things have changed. Gone are the glory days of cannon-ball runs watching Glenn wring the last few revs out of a VFR; it's a rather sedate, scenic tour these days. My Dad beat them all (myself excluded) to Nikau Cave ... in a Hiace van. Do the maths. Some quick guys still go on the over-nighter's though. Either way, get hold of Glenn and go on their email list; he quite often sends out last-minute rides like the run over to Browny's cafe near Katikati on Sunday 22nd May.

Weathers been pretty crap lately and had lowest turnout at the "clubrooms" so far with only 7 attending (I have put up the calendar entry for it again) . People are away or working this week and weekend or perhaps its just the rain but due to this there was little interest for this Sunday. July 2nd Trina and I will be doing the BFTP ride (its in the calendar) if anyone wants to come along let us know. Although this will be a Rotorua trip there is also some talk of a Rotorua trip to the VCC swapmeet at Paradise Valley on the 10th July. This could be a great chance for some of you to dust of the cobwebs and as such will be on!!. This ride is in the calendar with final route to be confirmed. The buffet deal will be available on the Sunday as well! Go on Cam you know the hashies are calling!!

Yeah it looked pretty busy there. We generally don't go to "The 'Paps" unless we can go out west. Might look at taking wifey up the High Noon on the dark side for the first time :) Dunno if she'll go for that though...haha (she's had bad experiences over there).
There's a bit of rain coming during the week so I'm hoping it won't go to icy.

There's a bit of rain coming during the week so I'm hoping it won't go to icy.We were planning on a turoa mission as there is no chain hire at whakapapa anymore but we checked the report when we got to national park and turoa needed chain hire but the whakapapa road was clear so we hit that instead.
The high noon won't be open for awhile as there is a bit of storm damage. Once that is open i think i will be spending most of my time there. Gotta hit the park as well!

Sadly couldn't make it to the pub last night (school hols etc) but good news have been told the vibrator is being returned to me after some serious cosmetic surgery and some new replacement bits and pieces (can't say what because I don't know what they're called and you'll just laugh at me).
