View Full Version : Waikato: Laxed out rides

I have seen allot of new riders on 250's and other riders who aren't so keen on racing or trying to keep up with the super sports looking for some organised rides around hamilton.
I am on a zx6rr but i am looking to enjoy a relaxed ride rather than race anything.
Was thinking of getting a group started for a ride or 2 a week when people are keen.
Weather pending (http://metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain®ion=nzni&noofdays=all) i would like to organise a ride for a couple of hours on sunday.
I am thinking somewhere in the middle of 11am to 3pm starting at the garden centre in kahikatea drive with a coffee, will be on everyone to decide where to go but i was thinking raynes road - mystery creek - cambridge - morrinsville and hadn't thought any further :)
Anyways, drop a message in here if you are interested.

The group that is behind the original thread by this name have requested that the site Moderators keep this incarnation of the laxed out rides thread closer to the thread topic. So from now on any posts about racing should be posted in the Racing forum, any posts about crashing, juvenile heroics, waving your arse at the law, pissing contests etc can be posted in PD. Basically if it's not about a relaxed ride or socializing around the Hamilton area it doesn't belong in this thread.
The Moderators will be keeping a close on this thread from now on.

Well I hope they stick to it as well - it wasn't just hijacked by others, so who's going to say what is and isn't about socialising around Hamilton?
I think they just want to limit the thread to who is in their precious little group, or more likely who they would like to exclude from their group.
If there was a problem perhaps they could've PM'd offenders first requesting they discontinue posting that type of stuff on the thread, or at lest put a post up outlining acceptable and not acceptable subjects.
Perhaps they need their own web site?

Just checking...who are you referring to as "they"? The people who are already "part of the group"?
Me personally, I just got annoyed with people not paying me their membership fees...how am I suppose to fund my expensive habits?
Who's looking at riding this weekend anyway? Shit, just remembered I'm out, heading to the 'naki and I'm not even allowed to ride the bike!

Being the weather man and general know it all as I am, It is going to be fine with fog lifting at around 10:30pm to patchy clear sky's, chance of drizzle in the bop and coromandel region.
I am keen for a slow ride!.. firstly got to get my ass motivated to pickup a 32mm socket and adjust and lube my chain.. soo lazy lately :(

Hey man, nice! i am in the same boat, the demon has almost eaten its tire already... dammit...
Looking clear for this weekend surprisingly enough, nothing planned as yet suggestions welcome!
I am thinking (if i can get a tire before friday) going for a roll this week too.

Not too sure at this stage, Weather dependent as always, I am keen if the ride is not too big.. still a bit twitchy about the insurance aspect of the bike.
I was hoping for a route that is not too covered in leaves and shady spots etc.. does not leave many interesting routes but I am sure we will come up with something at the pub :)

It is loose twisty metal for the first 1.5-2km then it is sealed however it was not very well swept when I went through there on the car last (4months ago). Tight blind corners, not really that fun but different none the less.

nah, its hard enough to keep the back wheel on tar seal on the 10 let alone stones or gravel.. pass!

SH1, SH2, and other long, overly caged roads with cheese cutters :)
To be honest, I find Arupini Rd a little boring (pretty much the opposite to Slofox :)), and I get bored with long straights as well.
Anything that involves constant throttle at 100 km/h is a little lame for me. And before anyone goes there - riding any section like that at 200km/h doesn't make it any less lame.

...depends on HOW you ride it, ckai...don't spend too much time on it...if ya know what I mean...
Try Ouruwhero Road from Otorohanga to Te Awamutu via Pokuru if you want something more interesting...watch the humpback bridge just south of Te Awamutu - I took it a little faster than usual this morning, stood up on the pegs as I went over and just about rotated forward over the handlebars...added interest to the ride...

Does anybody get a bit unsettled riding down narrow backcountry sealed roads with no road markings on it ?
I know i've heard a few people say that it's not fun meeting stock truck and trailer units on them. And my only motorcycle accident involved a car doing a 5 piont U turn on one 30mtrs after a blind corner in a 100km/h zone.. i nearly stopped before the impact.. I still love the roads though

I do not mind them too much, one just has to keep well left and slow down for crests and most blind corners.
I am not fast anyhow so suites me just nice :)
The only part I do not like about them is gravel, wet spots, cow shit etc..

Was telling the cylinder to fire when it wasn't ready too. Why it was only doing it after 2 hrs running or when the bike was hot or travelling at 150+ beats me, but they say its running fine now. Just gotta figure out when to get her home. Flat out @ work at the mo including weekends for a lil while. Be great to get back in the saddle :scooter:

Hi Guys & Girls
Back from a few days away. took the car down to wellington via Forgotten highway. Its a great road and I think you would all love it. Only concern was the 12 km of packed dirt road. The council fix the holes by dumping shovel loads of gravel in the holes and leaving it for the cars to flatten down. 1/2 of it had just been done so bit of a pain. Whangamonamoana republic was pretty much as expected and we had a good meal at the pub!! leaving Taumaranui you have a 155 stretch of petrol free road so if you ever do it make sure you fill up. Catch up with you all on wednesday night and if weather looks good for Queens Birthday lets organise a ride. Current long range forecast for the Saturday is great, not so good the Sunday or Monday.
Oh yeah, my favourite road is the Te Rapa straight from garnett Avenue to the Te Rapa racecourse entrance!!

Hi Guys & Girls
...via Forgotten highway. Its a great road and I think you would all love it. Only concern was the 12 km of packed dirt road. The council fix the holes by dumping shovel loads of gravel in the holes and leaving it for the cars to flatten down. 1/2 of it had just been done so bit of a pain.
The gravel thru there is not really a challenge to ride on, it's pretty hard and open, no sharp bends or inclines or anything that requires any more skill than average.
I wouldn't let the small amount of gravel put you off a fantastic ride like the Forgotten Highway

when youve done the 60-70 K's from the New Plymouth coast road, through all the back country of Ohura & on out to the forgotten highway, all of of it deep horrible metal , the hard packed stuff was like tar seal And yes we were on the VTR. 1 st gear was even too high at tmes!! stinking hot summer day, bike got hot & stuffed the back tyre. The only tar seal we found was on a very steep section that obviously vehicles wouldn't get up if it was metal. Saw some pretty wicked parts of the country though. 12 Kms of hard pack - no sweat & the gorge it runs through is pretty wicked. :2thumbsup

Totally agree with you both - no real problem at all!! As stated it is packed dirt and good to ride on. The only problem was they had just gone through 1/2 of it and chucked loose gravel over all the holes and left it. Have to organise an overnight ride to the Naki!!

Are you wearing icebreaker under your leathers? If it is straight on your skin does it itch much? I don't really care if they aren't breathable. Not wearing them long enough in one stretch for it to matter

Normally through the winter I can get away with wearing x2 layers of thermals. leather pants with shower proof trousers over the top this keeps most of the chill out, having just returned from a North Island escape
( which was covered in black ice, fog infested, single digit riding weather ) this setup kept me sane around them there mountains

You can get them at R & R Sport in Hamilton & many of the good outdoor pursuits stores.. they'll cost you an arm and a leg but they're supposed to be pretty good.. Soft cock here can tell you all about them ;) He's still not convinced they're worth the money. Never buy icebreaker at normal retail prices. It's always on sale and bivouac sells old stock online for good value. Otherwise make a trip up to Dorkland and save a bit at the outlet.
You can get base layers for about $80 (discounted) and Jerseys sometimes for $90 (normally $250 at least). It's just thin and awesomely insulated. That's all I wear under my gears in the winter. Polypros smell too much and then they start too itch - any merino (icebreaker) doesn't really. If you hate wool - merino is better.
In saying that, only cool people have icebreaker. Probably not for you Dom since you're in team Yamahahahahahaha.

If you over heat your self or your environment, you will take longer to get rid of the flue, bugs love the warmth for breading
The trick is staying warm but being in a mild temperature - dress real warm but don't sit on a heater
Riding in cold weather, dressed warm but exposing your lungs to all that cold air will clear you up
And eat lots of fruit
Wacky advice is free - no responsibility taken if you end up with a worse flu

Lift passes that day where free so was jus $20 to get the board (student prices mind) $25 petrol money and $10 for fish and chips in Timaru at dinnertime.
Cant remember what the prices are for Mt. Ruapahau. Look it up online, youd be expecting to pay about $80 for a day pass though.

The offical base is 90cm. On the trails youd be getting that, if you go for a walk up the edges it gets less naturally. The field was Mt. Dobson, one of the 20odd skifields down here. Its about 60kms inland from Timaru. I dunno where broken river is

Just because the others may wish to ride fast - does not mean that you have to keep up with them or cannot ride with them. If you all agree to end at a certain place, then perhaps they could have two routes planned, one for the bigger and faster bikes and they take a longer route, and one for the riders who are either learning or wish to cruise to the destination - often a shorter route. We have done this and all met up at the planned stop. Means there is no pressure on either group and everyone gets to enjoy the ride.

The offical base is 90cm. On the trails youd be getting that, if you go for a walk up the edges it gets less naturally. The field was Mt. Dobson, one of the 20odd skifields down here. Its about 60kms inland from Timaru. I dunno where broken river is
You are so unlearned http://www.brokenriver.co.nz/. Apparently one of the best for powder. I reckon there's more than 30 fields if you include the clubbies. There's a crap load!
MMm ride on Sunday? Might be a go depending on head status.

Thats a bit random? dredging up a post from way back then - and then proceeding to instruct us in the obvious?

Definately preaching to the converted there, we've been doing the "ride at your own" the whole time :) (since october) i would like to see dual rides as well so the quicker riders don't have to stop for so long and the other riders don't try and keep up.
See how it pans out.

Not sure dude, always wanted to try it :) sealed or not it wouldn't be too bad slowing down a bit or doubling back to HW5 for a little.

Eeek, Was just going to say give me the gas for the little Starlet and I will drive you down so you can ride up on Sat.
I would have suggested Rav4 but that thing would cost around $70 to get to Napier, and $70 back compaired to the startlet being humm prolly around $80 round trip.
Labour charge :
1 Pie + V per 150km
