If the pillion had a pink mohawk and jacket that would have been us :)
Yup. That will be the one. :)
Man them Triumphs look tiny when you have rider and pillion on them. I was only thinking what mine would look like with me and wife on it. Thank god she is paper-weight
By the way what make is your aftermarket slipon?
The bike looked hot :headbang:

MIght have to check it out, I am not really a group/social person, but every now and then it is nice to shoot the breeze with like minded people.
If its the Honda's club ride tends to be a bit of a race and not sure whether Harleys allowed??
Yep agree with others super wet and super cold - glad to get back for a hot shower - all good practise at riding in the rain. Anyone know who the guy with the older GS1100? with brownish fairing was??? I thought he was with Ulysses but sort of thought about it later and maybe not?/ Good to ride with and follow, he kept a nice pace for our pootlers in the back. (Was it topher1150??)

Yeah they do look tiny with a couple of people. Parking them in front of Plastic Fantastic bikes like a Ninja or CBR shows how much narrower they are. Too much unnecessary plastic for me :)
The slipon is a Two Brothers Racing M5. Ended up getting it here in NZ for $500 before I even had the bike. Getting in from the US at the time would have been $550 so I was stoked. They're pretty bloody loud, and that's with the "silencer" in it although I do have another one to make it quieter (but that would just be silly). Without one is madness when it gets past 8,000 rpm!

I just ordered my TBR M5 in Carbon from the States. I am still deciding wheter to have DB killer or take it out. I also ordered K&N Hiflow air filter and once on, the bike is going in to the shop to get remaped. Is it very loud on the bike or more for people behind it? Like I said undecided about the dB killer at this stage.

I had a two bros on my SVS when I had it. I used the decibel killer at WOF time. Then eventually I left it in full time because I got sick of all that fucking noise behind me...
It did sound a helluva lot better though, even with the db killer in there.

From what i understand the DB killer on the TBR is one where you take it out from behind by unscrewing the back plate?

Loud when you're on the bike...FUCKEN loud when you go past someone. Apparently it sounds like a demon full noise at the track :devil2: You get used to it though. At anything below 4k rpm it's not loud just throaty (my under 2 sleeps threw it). On longer trips it does tire you out. My head was ringing when I rode to Napier last year. I would threw in my quieter db killer on long trips.
The only big difference in noise is when you open them up. Without the killer it's nuts at the higher rev range.

I take mine out all the time to clean. They're an absolute prick to keep clean. I have the carbon one as well. I do like the look of the black series ones though.
I remember Mr Fox's SV with the TBR's. It sounded bloody good.

I have tomorrow and Thursday off. A workmate will be riding his bike at an evening track day at Hampton Park ( 5pm ). I'll go for a run up HW22 in the afternoon and see how he goes, then cruise back via back roads.
Hopefully, it will be dark by then and I'll get a bit of a run after dark. May even head on to Port Waikato and try for some sunset photos on the coast.

For remapping have a look at this (http://www.tuneecu.com/) site. Its a free download and I have the program and the OBDII cable required. Its piss easy to use and a good place to start with remapping. If you want to borrow the cable just let me know.

No it not topher1150, topher was the Ride leader on a BMW CS. The GS 1100 with top box and fairing belongs to John from Te Awamutu and yes he's part of Ulysses

Im 41 and havent rode a bike for 20 years until from a couple of weeks ago when the wife got a new car and I got a '07 Hyosung GV 250 (use to ride Suzi GN250) as was told easy to ride and it suits my licence (L).
I want to sit my practical soon to rid the big yellow L plate but need some "assessment" from an experienced biker to follow me and let me know how I am currently so I know what I need to brush up on. My wife follows occasionally but said after a week I am fine - but maybe she's being kind.
This is an opportunity for someone that's had a bad day at work to give me crap about my rusty riding.

That's great. I think I am ok (dont we all) but need a bit more confidence approaching and cornering roundabouts and corners at high speed. Today at lunch time I went to The Base via Rotokauri (by the zoo), Exelby then Burbush and I know I am not good enough on the corners. I just see the gravel and gives me the willies so I slow down on approach. I think my speed is ok but I compensate +10km speed limit as I think my speedo is out based on my wifes comments.
I will arrive 2:50pm and hang around for 20 minutes at kingsgate hotel carpark (I assume the one by the race course round-about?) Dont worry if you dont turn up - we all are busy people.
Being west hamilton, my route to whatever over the bridge may be the extended version.
thanks heaps.
p.s. you cant miss me, I have a GIANT YELLOW L plate sticking out the rear end...of the bike.

Murray's always at the Kingsgate. That or the Te Rapa tavern . In fact he lives there (even place - doesn't matter haha). Big ups for asking for some help too. A lot of people would just shy away if they weren't that confident and hope for the best. Better to get "issues" sorted before they become ISSUES if you know what I mean.
The secret to riding...look ahead (12 seconds ahead), be confident but not cocky, own your piece of the road, and the most important thing...LOVE IT!!
And Murray, give him shit ;) LOL

Hi everyone,
I'm about to wrap up my NZ motorcycle culture photography project, but I'd really prefer to do one more quick shoot.
Is there any group rides happening over the weekend that are going to be quite short? (ie a few hours in the arvo)
Alternatively if there is a few of you willing to pootle round some back roads with me photographing as a pilion that would be fantastic.
Info here for those that haven't read about it:

Went for a run this afternoon. Out past Wharepapa sth, Aotearoa rd. Lots of winding tight corners, Last 8 k's are tight rough gravel. Fantastic views tho. Turned left at the Ngaroma end, straight across Waipapa rd, more gravel along Huirimu rd, smooth, clean and got the crusier up to 90k's in places, lots of fun. New seal on Pukewhau rd. Left onto Waipapard, right into Kahorekau rd, Aotearoa, and back to Te A.
Had a quick stop at home, removed the windshield to see what difference it would make and out to Raglan to pick up the Tag a rama pic.
Lots of magic corners, enough gravel to make the ride interesting, Lovely views.

That sucks .. It recalls to me one winters day following ( at a safe distance of course) a taxi with a fogged up rear window.
The guy stopped dead in the middle of the road and proceeded to reverse into me!
I had stopped but had nowhere to go. Fortunately somehow he did realise or something and stopped but not before he had ripped his number-plate off on my front tyre !
Phew .. no damage to me or bike .. but the craziest things can happen out there !!

See, I've often wondered how this sort of thing would work without the likes witnesses. Since we have this general "you hit someone from behind you're generally in the wrong" rule, if a moron reverses into you like this and there's no witnesses to say they're a moron (and they lie), it could be a hard one to prove. It's kinda a good "rule of thumb" but there's been a few that have been caught out when they shouldn't have.

Did about 540k's today. My 1st time over the Forgotton highway. About 6 km of deep loose metal spread through the gorge. Made for lots of
snaking the rear wheel. Rode into the tunnel and had to come to a stop. Sunnies blocked out everything.
The road from Whangamomona to Stratford was fantastic. The river rd to the junction with the Ohura leg is fairly rough in places.
From Stratford up HW3 was mostly light rain but good roads. I dont know that I would rush down there for another ride. Just added up the fuel bill along with a bite or two to eat and now, to tell 'her'..

Looks like it was a pretty sweet ride Arthur, one day I'll do that ride, hopefully this summer.
There's a ride on next weekend, Sunday I think the 27th for the Hamilton North Special School, anyone know anything?

Yep its in the calendar - Bit of a mystery ride, they tell us when we get there. Did Kawhia one year and can't remember the other one - up to about 200 kms max register 9.30 leaves about 10.00ish and back early afternoon for BBQ sausage, raffles etc. An Ok day with some hot rods, vintages on display and a wide variety of bikes - usually about 40 or so. See you there!

Murray - you'd be happy to know that i read most of the book last night and even though I thought I did it anyway, I checked over my shoulder before I pulled out on to continue on a roundabout (I stalled on it as the gear was too high on take off), and as I was about to go, zoomed went past a truck right in the path I was about to take. I was conscience about it due to what I read the night before. If I did not check over my shoulder and although i indicated to pull out and checked the mirrors, my wife would have had a free-hold house and I would be with my Tupuna.
Back to my topic - for someone of your experience what would you say the caution level should be for the amount of wind today? The ride to the base was horrible and I did try to relax of the handlebars.

In any high wind situation and especially if not well experienced I would try and avoid commuting on bike, BUT if you have to, just relax and make sure you give your self plenty of space around you, just in case the wind catches you. Make sure you are relaxed and do not tense up. Slow down if in 100km area and plan your corners well. Also be prepared for wind gusts. Main point is to relax and do not panic.

I have tried to copy and paste a paragraph on riding in strong winds but cant highlight the text. Basicly, it says, dont grip the handgrips too tight. This stiffens up your whole body and you become like a rigid sail.
a bit like advice on riding in thick loose metal. or doing slow U turns on full lock without putting your foot down, emergancy braking, Easy to say, and dont think it is only new riders who can struggle with these issues.
Practise is the key.

I like the "building" to the left of the post office. It's brilliant, all 2 metres deep of it haha.
Back to my topic - for someone of your experience what would you say the caution level should be for the amount of wind today? The ride to the base was horrible and I did try to relax of the handlebars.
Good advice above. The whole theory behind the "relax" way of doing things is it gives your bike the ability to move how it should. You tense up on the bars, and the front suspension won't work how it should. Meaning the bike will be less responsive. Tensing up on the bars will also mean that if you do get hit by a gust, where is that gust of wind going to go? Straight down into your bars, and into your front wheel. Relaxing means you'll have a little 'give' if you do get hit by the wind.
I don't mind in the slightest riding in wind like this. In fact, I relax more. I just let the bike do it's thing. I do grip the tank a little more with my knees though.
A very good rider told me once, if you can't wave with either hand at any time, you're holding the bars too tight.
Caution level? I suppose I'm slightly more aware that the unexpected can happen. Still doesn't really help when it does...that's why it's unexpected ;)
5150 has a good point - if you're not happy riding in the wind, just avoid it. Wait til you build more confidence and you'll be away.

I think it was just a way for the town to look less vacant. I wouldn't be surprised if the community passed a hat around to get things like that done. They were having a hard time bringing money in since the town looked rubbish. It wouldn't have been that much to build. I had a good look at it and it's actually just got poles as the main support, making me think it was specially built.
Could be wrong. Could be something to do with filming.

Lean into the wind slightly to find balance point & counter steering with feet & hands helps
Read the wind ( if that makes sense ) be alert to your surroundings particularly through built up areas like the CBD, I find riding through rural/ exposed areas easier to judge the wind but ultimately RELAX,RELAX RELAX :niceone:

The Spyder has the two wheels at the front? Trying to remember. I followed a Gold wing Trike on one of our runs and could see the forces coming onto the front forks under braking, especially approaching downhill corners. I think the two wheels at the front would hold up better under braking.
I'm still keen to look at a sidecar unit for my bike. There is a chap at Katikati that deals with them. Will go and have a chat. Does anyone know of who else deals with sidecars?

Place: Our place 75 Lewis Street Glenview Hamilton.
Date: Sunday 11 December 2011
Time: Five pm. I understand that Murray is contemplating a ride on Sunday afternoon timed to arrive at our place at 5 pm. For that reason I have left it for him to put this up as a calendar event. To RSVP you must register your intended attendance. Rather than have riders trying to carry salads etc it's intended to levy a charge of $10.00 per person to cover the cost of meat and booze. Darn for sure ... My bike is off the road while I replace the gear cluster & output shaft.
Seems the front sprocket is in-fact harder than the shaft, and the spline is nearly worn away completely. Good thing is I have replacement parts off eBay.

How come you rarely hear that excuse (if any) when a truck steamrolls a car? Most of the time it's the car that drives under the truck.

A few years back I got rear ended on Victoria street (North End lights outside then R&R Sport)
I was on my ZZR600 and stopped in a line of cars waiting for green light. Got rear ended so hard the bike flew off from underneath me and hit a car head on comming the other way. Luck would have it, it was a brand spanking new Merc. I did a sommersault and landed on the bonnet of the guy who rear ended me, rolled off and landed on my feet. I went up to him and he locked him self in his car. All I remember was getting put in a lock by the passers by as all of them thought I was going to deck the guy. Even when cops turned up he refused to get out of his car out of fear. His excuse was that he was eating a pie and didn't see me. He was up for $8K for my written off bike and another $30k for the Merc that was now severly damaged. He didn't even have insurance. This was the first time I nearly commited murder. :angry2:
I would have happily shoved his pie up his arse but he already finished it before cops turned up. And it was mince and cheese one too

I said it before and I say it again, if you took NZ population to EU, States or Canada where there is snow in winter, I would bet half of us wouldn't survive a month. Our driving education and driving habbits are shocking. People complain and ask why Germany has open speed limit on their Autobahns. Three reasons really
1) Their roading systems are much better and more developed then here
2) Their driver education is light years ahead of ours
3) Most importantly the drivers there are FAR MORE COUTEROUS(sp?) then here in NZ.

My first accident on a bike was a car done a U-turn in front of me, wrote bike off , minor injuries for me and car took off (I hunted him down and caught him a couple weeks later and he was a 'respected publican, mason and rotary member' and I was a teenage biker so he was never charged for the offence.
Few years ago I was going round a roundabout in Palmerston North, had headlight on, sidelights on, right indicator going and an Asian chic in a 4X4 came through the give way and Tboned me..... she also said "Sorry I didnt see you" she gave me a ride the 50km home tho ... then offered me a job driving a brand new Mack that they had arriving in a couple days LMAO (I declined)
Yeh Kiwi drivers are dumbasses, just got our car back from panelshop after a month following a young fella rearending us ...... the reason... "I didnt see you" we were stationary, brake lights on, indicator going and a white car ........ LMAO hes been charged careless injury.
I drive a truck/trailer unit and often in a B-Train and cars continuously try to "beat me" at ends of merges and they gradually learning that more and more truckies are not pulling out of the way, ask the dumbass Indian lady that I went over her car with 39 tonne of rig, she said "I had a right to underpass you" DOH ..... Told her maybe in India you do but not here lady and told her to always remember .... In a truck I DONT swerve for motorists, I go over top LOL
When I drive I treat every other motorist as an idiot thats gonna do something stupid (and many dont dissapoint me) and Something I have always remembered when I was taught to drive by a traffic officer/drivig instructor (Don Williams) in 1969, he often said to me "always remember when driving..... MAKE SAFE DRIVING A HABIT"
I was talking to a highway officer one night when we were both fueling up and I commented about a dumbass pass by a car that evening and said to the cop "Im more and more convinced motorists cant think beyond their windscreens" and the cop said he doesnt think they can even think that far LMAO
One of the solutions for us bikers ..... wear ominous black leathers and ride a LOUD cruiser .... they tend to make way for yah then LMAO I had a motorist pass while oncoming ad I swung round and chased him, got up to around 160km/h trying to catch him and he was going for it .... sheesh I was only gonna knock his block off .... nothing major hehehhehe
They pushed for all bikers to be in fluro ....... I opposed it in my submission on the grounds the NZ public will become 'accustomed to them and then like the road signage not actually see them, this will make road workers also unsafer as they wont be noticed in fluro either ...... sheesh they put out 100,000 road cones and motorists dont seem to see them either lmao

Some ok deals - got a retro leather jacket ($200 from $460) to see if it made a difference to the riding as I'd lost a bit of confidence when being hit by wind gusts - and it made a big difference. I previously was using my wifes ski jacket due to it being waterproof, but it seems it acted like a paracute with the wind going up the sleves.

Ski jackets are rubbish for anything other than the snow. Like you found, they blow up like balloons. Wifey used to wear one when she rode pregnant cause she couldn't fit her bike jacket. She said it was crap coming along the ridge past Ohaupo.

So why is it called gentle annie then?
Many names surviving from the gold-mining era are associated with scenes of the principal rushes. Some commemorate the diggers who made strikes (Gabriel's Gully, Arthur's Point, Ross, Addison's Flat); some are the miner's descriptions of localities, such as Canvastown, Ophir, and Reefton; while others are quaint names bestowed by the diggers, Napoleon's Hill, Dry Bread, Roaring Meg, Gentle Annie, and Vinegar Hill.
Done it by car about 5 years ago - still had about 20km to be sealed but like everyone says its a must do road!!

If you have a look HERE (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/145216-Cancer-Society-Ride-Relay-Saturday-March-3rd-2012?highlight=relay+ride), you will see what this is about.
Maha has asked me if I'd liaise with local riders to get our section of this relay sorted - a task I am happy to accept. BUT - I may well be working on the day if I can't get a reliever for the shop.
So I thought the LOR group would be very useful for this task. If I can get the reliever, I'd be happy to be baton carrier but we really need a small (or large) fleet of bikes to make an impact. Which is where the LOR comes into the picture. If I can't ride, we'd need someone else to carry the baton and a fleet of others to accompany that rider.
The ride itself, at this stage anyway, would involve meeting the baton carrier from the Taupo area at a location yet to be decided, and carrying it through to where we meet with the next stage riders - again at a location to be decided. We'd be heading Norf by the way.
This is really just advanced notice to get people thinking about it. Once we are through the loony season, I'll remind us all of the event and start recruiting participants - prolly put a calendar entry up as well.
So have a think about it, read Maha's post and keep it in mind for the new year.
I'll come back to this in January.
Thanks all.

I'll come back to this in January.
Thanks all.
So whose looking after the hamilton section, I see Kerry is the name on the 2nd post. later Maha referes to CKAI and LOR and your'e also mentioned. Sounds like someting we should all get involved in - I will follow the leader - whoever that may be????

Kerry pm'd me yesterday saying that he could/would do anything to help.
I made the call and put his name on the list.

There was some loose gravel but it blended in so well to the new road surface i struggled to see what was clear and what wasnt. I would say it has been swept but i still took it easy.

I've made up a few clips now, posted on You Tube, Am now on Americas most wanted list for daring to dub copyright music. The vids are still up there tho.
Its quite neat seeing something rise up from trying something new. I am now learning to adjust the colour, brightness etc. I have made my own mounting on the handlebar. Now, I;m trying out the camera fixed to the helmet.

Know what you mean. Unfortunatly, you need to be moving your head around when riding. I've stuck the mounting base to the helmet and now find need to angle it up slightly. The centre piece is supposed to come away from the base, but mine seems to be stuck tight.

I have a dual lock pad on the side of the helmet and can stick the camera on there. It's never fallen off - so far anyway. But I do loop a cord around the helmet strap just in case.
Getting the alignment right can be "interesting". I have various videos of a) the sky and b) the road whizzing by underneath. Haven't posted any of them on You-tube though...

I have been playing with the You tube editing thingy. Trying to put some colour in and getting rid of the 'washed out' look. Not working too well so far. But what the f**k. I'm having fun.

Mine is not High Definition. That may be the difference. Even a couple of my longer videos ( 7 minutes) uploaded in barely 10-15 minutes. If you edit on You tube, it takes a while before the new version is processed.
With Movie Maker, there isn't any way of editing colour, brightness,Temperture, saturation (whatever that is), that I know of. I might look for another 'free, REAL BASIC' vid editing programme that will let me tinker before uploading.
Also, with MM, once I publish a movie, I dont seem able to dub over better music.

At a lose end next Sunday?
Rock up at the Waikato Commerce Club at say 9.50 am for a 10 am leave for an economy run with Hamilton Ulysses. Have you tank as full as possible. First stop will be Whatawhat GAS Station for a top up and them for a conservative paced ride to Thames via backroads.
Fill up at Thames again and hand your receipts to the organizer. From Thames it will be a free ride (at what ever speed you a comfortable with) back to Rotouna BP for a fill up again
The organizer will collect all Gas receipts and will set the kms per litre all out on a spread sheet comparing economy speed with you "free ride " results.
The results in past years have been very interesting.
Need anymore information. Send me a PM.
Cheers

For those of you who have carbed bikes,
Do you turn off your petcock when your not riding?
Im looking around trying to find out if i should or not but there dosnt seem to be a solid answer so i thought id see what you guys think.
My owners manual only says to turn it off when removing the tank or storing for a long period of time(what defines long?)
Thanks for any opinions.

Yes, when stopping for more than 30 minutes and definately when parked up in the shed. If the float sticks open you will have petrol pouring out.
You need to remember to turn them on again:no:

Owned bikes since 1969. I cant ever remember turning the fuel off unless removing the tank. Perhaps, KB's right, but I've never had a problem arise.
Some early fuel taps started leaking if turned on and off all the time.

that has been some peoples thinking, but my manual does say that the fuel only flows to the carbs when the bike is started or running and is shut off when the bike is stopped.

Your profile says you have a 99' ZX6 I had one of these & never bothered to turn fuel tap off, tried doing it for awhile but i always forgot to turn the thing back on ( thankfully rides to work where mostly on a motorway ) I did buy it brand new & there was no mention of having to daily turn it off although I would turn it off if I wasn't riding for say, weeks on end rather than just days...... if in doubt ring Hamilton Motorcycles being a Kawasaki dealer, cool bike by the way

hmmm ........
Fuel only flows when the engine is running because there is a vacuum operated valve built into the fuel petcock.
So the above statement from your manual is true. No need to turn any fuel off when you are parked up.
kb_SF1 is possibly referring to a time prior to the arrival of the Japanese motorcycling industry when vacuum operated valves didn't exist.
In which case spilt fuel on the ground was a high possibility if the fuel was not turned off.

I thought it was about time especially as they changing the laws 1. give way, 2. weight ratio for learner bikes, 3. removal of the age benefit for reducing test wait durations etc
One thing they are changing to my benefit is that the cost to sit the restricted is going up next month and the cost to sit the full is going down (which I will be doing in 6 months if pass next weeks 6R)

I'd say the only issue they're really have with putting your foot down is if you were still moving or moving at a speed that putting your foot down would be dangerous. The way I look at it is it'd be safer for you and other road users to put your foot down when riding real slow then to drop the bike. But like you said, probably different for different testers.
Doesn't hurt to ask them first though ah? ;)

whats this whole weight ration for learner bikes? i havent heard about this(not that it matters for me). they give you a pretty wide road for your u-turn, when i sat my full i rode terribly and still passed, wobbly as all hell on my u-turn and i actually pulled out in front of some one when i did it(didn't see them(bad head check, my bad)) i thought they wer to close but the tester didn't say anything about it.

:niceone: It's a good idea doing the "pre-trackday" check!! They will have a look at your bike before it goes on the track and they told me I needed new front brake pads for next time... and that was about 2,000km ago :pinch:
So it would of costed me: $200 for front brake pads, $60ish for oil change and a new rear tyre $300 (the track loves eating the sides of the tyres!!!!)
Much rather put this towards my aviation headset (http://worldwide.bose.com/axa/en_nz/web/aviation_headsets/page.html). I'm still saving =p

Old Spice??? Try this. (http://youtu.be/zLq2-uZd5LY)
Just make sure you make exaggerated head turns when checking mirrors, side roads, intersections etc.

Glenn from Boyd Motorcycles is running a one day ride on the 29th of January from Hamilton to Mike's Brewery in the Naki for lunch. Departs Boyds at 9:30am and follows some of Waikato's most stunning roads. I have already penciled it in my calendar (weather dependant ofcourse) :msn-wink:

My ride for this Sunday, Back roads to Piopio, cut across, via Te Mapara to HW4, Kopaki rd, back to TeKuiti, home.
Will do it alone or if anyone wants to tag along, they're welcome. I'll leave Te A Caltex about 9.30.
