Thats all good , but while one old lady was "learning" her way around the Waikato , 8 other bikers waited for well over an hour, in the sun, on the side of the road, wondering WTF had happened !! 1 even rode all the way back to the Pauanui turn-off, looking for an off, given that there were 2 learner ladies not present , or an outta gas scenario. Very happy that was not the situation , but still .............!!
Heard of a map ??
Apologies for not having someone at the offending intersection , but one mistakingly thought that a sign post with Kopu to the left, & Whitianga/Tairua to the right might have been a clue ???

That sort of thing happened on our group ride to Kawhia...all was going good until an intersection we went passed (sh22) had me wondering?
So I turned my group around thinking I had got it wrong (we were heading for Narrower here at the time) and we doubled back taking in a very scenic route on the way to port waikato...stopped just past Nikau Cafe.
THATS when we got the map out....
No cell phone coverage out there.

All in all, it was glorious day and the road was mint, never been there before and the detour was worth it.
I was pissed at myself for getting it wrong more than anything...new roads and shit!

It wasn't in the plan , but it appears our 2 learner ladies and the designated TEC were led astray. He knows who he is & this is not the first time he has wandered.:Oops::Oops::Oops::Oops:

That's your first mistake, North is always uphill. So if you're going downhill, you're heading south. But the other rule of thumb is south is always behind you. So clearly if you're going down hill you're heading west because south down + south behind cancels each other out. Personally the "south behind" rule just sounds silly so I always go up north is up and south is down. Easy.

Its about the ride for me too and like to go slow as 1. bike is slow, 2. i am slow, 3. only been riding a year, 4. dont want to get lost so stay close to murray. The best scenic ride for me was to kaiaua - referred to as "bonding with mark time".

For those that don't remember or didn't hear, that's when Murray and Glenn went above and beyond in getting me home, after which Tony and Dave did the same with my old bike after it suddenly decided to convert itself into a cruiser. LOR at it's finest, gentlemen. :niceone:

We have another option for Sunday to run to the Waikato. So if ya all prefer to go to Raglan on Saturday then do so, Then you can always meet us on Matamata on Sunday around 10am.

Nice. I am looking to get out this weekend so one (or both of these) would be a good excuse to get a bit more time in on the bike.

Looking foward to hearing the plan for Saturday!

Bit of vid here...it is much better viewed on Ewe Choob though. Blow it up to full screen and select 720p. Wait for a bit after those selections and you won't have buffering delays.

The sound track was supposed to be that music overlaid on the original road noises but for some reason, Ewe Choob, it its infinite wisdom, dropped the original bits in favour of the music...

The original footage is recorded with a RePlay XD camera set to 720p and 60fps.

Right, all the details for this:

As ME said down below it's the 15th or 16th of December at the Uni

15 Dec is for fresh riders so those on learners, restricted or just joined the big leagues and recently got their full. Under 3 years experience and bikes up to 600cc

16 Dec is for Full licence riders more than 3 years experience and who like to hoon around on the death machines known as over 600cc.

Cost = $30
To register call Roadsafe Motorcycle Training 04 232 0110

Source: Out of the local paper that we've keep so mummy dearest can do one of them.

How'd you enjoy yesterday? Was it you that busted your bike? If it was you were riding well. Brooke enjoyed it. She said she wish she did it when she started riding like you so she didn't form all her bad habits. Reckons it should be compulsory for everyone starting (I agree). Even those that have been riding a while like the group she was in.

Yesterday was awesome! I learnt so much! Didn't bust the bike, it just decided it had had enough and started running like shit again... It will be going in for a decent service next week. As well as getting a fork seal done. Damn bike is getting rather expensive now :(

It is well worth it. I think you would be far better off doing something like that then the basic handling skills. I just wish it was longer, maybe 2 days. That way we could learn more and work on things that were more difficult.

That's right, Brooke said your bike was spluttering or something along those lines. Agree that you should have to do something like that instead of BHS. The BHS is "tough" in some aspects (slow-speed stuff) but, lets face it, it's a bit of a joke for real world riding. Funny thing is, if you did the slow speed stuff yesterday, you pretty much have included the test in their. Plus, you get the added benefit of cornering and all the other stuff.

Good you liked it. A heap of people, including Brooke, are apprehensive about jumping on a track to learn. From what Brooke told me there was a bit covered if you were new. There's other advanced courses that make your brain explode with the amount of content they cover in a day. It takes about a week after for you to process all the info from that one day! I think that's the good thing about cramming so much into those training days though. Sure you miss out of working on certain things and forget but if you start practicing straight away, it all comes back to you and it means it'll stay with you. That's my theory anyway :) Besides, it makes you wanna go back for more training (and pay them more money) haha

BHS is 5 or 10 kmph around a carpark, nowhere near enough experience to let you out on the road! (Although I can't talk as had my learners for at least four years before buying the bike and then rode it home from hastings...) We did the cone weave and a u-turn and practiced braking, all are in the BHS. Then we got the cornering, the safety skills for on the road, throttle control etc etc
I was very nervous when I came down the road and saw the track for the first time, really started to freak! But the guys were so good about everything, took it real slow the first time out and then we just got into the rythm, learnt more and everything became easier!
I don't think I will be getting much sleep the next few days, my brain is just spinning with information. My coach gave me a whole heap of printouts which is awesome, will give me plenty to study if I feel like I forgot something. And I will probably understand the Twist of the wrist books more now too. I just want to get out on the bike and ride and ride and ride... :)

haha yeah she did. Freaked out with it as she'd never done that before. I thought everyone had tried going around corners with one hand :) It is a good exercise. Can do it in a large car park too. The twist of the wrist video has a very good example of counter steering. I really should dig around the computer to find it again.

Yeah, you could see she improved towards the end of the day. Her last sessions she was a shocker though. Just didn't look with it and wondered why such a dramatic change. It turned out her first couple of laps were great and then her feet went to sleep and everything snowballed. That's what ya get for having a bung ankle :)

It'll be good to see the difference in her riding on the road.

A couple of mashed fingertips, assorted grazes and bruises, and (now) a bike that won't be out until next season! Will post some pictures when I get the bike home.

You should have practised a few more dance moves on Friday night, you might have missed the debris if you had.

Happy to hear you are well

Hi, guys, well, I'm afraid you missed the action yesterday.
I know it's been a bad weekend for bikers, but I didn't expect to come close to joining them!:gob::innocent:

I am keen on the Xmas ride, but am still trying to figure out my availabilty. Would it be ok for me to put my name down and pony up the cash, and then just do my best to be there?

The east cape ride - I am assuming the biggest cut off for that would be accomodation? My keeness is only limited by the idea of trying to do 400km's in a day on the Boulevard! :shit:

mmm possibly. Either Brooke or I :) I won tickets to the racing on Saturday so I'll be going to that and maybe have to catch up on the lawns on Sunday.

Will have a chat with the clan on Monday about the xmas party. Might even get the old man and mummy dearest to go on the ride. Couldn't think of a better way to ride her bike for the first time :)

Sounds like a nice wee pootle. My pland fell through (well, never eventuated), so I'm keen. I might have to plan in a side trip to Shunter's yard by myself on the way back. Been meaning to go see the place for a while. Only so many beer's you can have with the brewer before you really want to go see the brewery!

--edit--

Not that I'm saying I want to go only by myself, if anyone else tags along (and they are open when we go) feel free!

Hmm, can't find open details for Woodside Estate Cafe on the website. I might give them a call. I am pretty sure the cafe (which has Shunters Brewery beers on tap) is open on Sundays, I just don't know when they shut. I will also try to find out who might be brewing that day.

They are located just off SH1B just past Matangi (coming back from Cambridge way) at 130 Woodside road. Will post again tomorrow with more info.

My wife is trying to make me go on this. (I have been dithering about it, and she is trying to make my mind up for me!)

So, I guess I should look at booking accomodation! Looks like the prices went up, and all the cheap rooms are booked. Plus the online booking thing seems to charge different rates for breakfast depending on the room? $15/$30/$20.

Or should I book through an agent, or even just call them?

You could call direct and say you are with LOR group and have a special rate for the group OR IT IS possible that we ensure we get some twin rooms get 2 people in a room as a number of single guys (mark, martin, phil, slicksta??) are booked - Might be time to sort the accom at Napier out - will talk with Milan next Wednesday at pub meeting - I would leave it a while as I am sure we will find a bed for you. Waihou Bay is pretty much bunk rooms so all booked

Argh! Now I've done it - I emailed them to book a room. If I have to pay a little extra for twin share nevermind. Signed up in the calendar.

As to a ride on a public holiday - yeah getting out on the roads on a public holiday can be scary, but I think with care can be managed. Plus the cops are doing better at raising awareness to take extra care over those times, so hopefully it can be just as safe as getting out there on any other weekend with all those crazy cages! :eek5:

Remember it is only Auckland Anniversary weekend so not to sure how much traffic will be heading Napier and East Coast way. Think most will be going Northland Coromandel, maybe Rotorua so we should avoid nearly all of it

Theoretically say you and Mark shared a twin room (2 beds) you should pay 1/2 the cost each so should be cheaper. In Hotel accommodation usually you start paying extra with 3 or more people to a room.

I've never done it before but am very tempted to give next year a good crack as starting point for CP1 is Cape Reinga ( CP2 Cape Egmont, CP3 East Cape & finish CP4 @ Bluff ) for those that have done it before, how do you plan the transfer to SI & what timeframe do you allow for the transfer ? all ideas/thoughts greatly appreciated :msn-wink: Might make the LOR east coast trip after all :shifty::shifty::shifty:

General rule of thumb:

Unless you're on the road at the very start and very end of the holiday period, it's actually the best time since every other bugger is already at their destination, lying on the beach, drinking Slippery Nipples.

Of course, we all know how shit it is to travel with every one else at the start and end though.

But like Murray said, since it's anniversary weekend, not many will be heading in the same direction.

This is one great ride. Well worth the 12km of gravel to get to it. Or you could come up from Awakino and then turn around when the seal ends and ride it each way if gravels frightens you. Today the gravel was thin with easy riding in wheel tracks, no sliding round, easy 60k on a sporty. The odd ball-rattling corrugation though...best to be standing up for those bits.

There's about 30km of pure twisties between the gravel and SH3. Sealed, not that wide but OK, not a lot of traffic at all - maybe three vehicles in all through there today.

Then there's the gorge on the way home. After the narrower bit, it feels a mile wide and sweepy rather than twisty. Pity about the tanker and trailer infestation...All in all, it's a great day's ride.

Only one bad moment. On the way home, between Pio Pio and Te Kuiti I got behind two litttle jeepy things, front one doing 85 - 90. Back one following real close. Eventually the straight bit comes. I wait for Mr 2 to pass but he hovers behind. So I think (as one does) that I had better zip past both. Which I did. Then just as I moved by Mr.1, a clearing appears on the other side of the road. With a parked patrol car in it. And an active radar machine. And here's me at the top of a passing move and just a tad over the speed limit. Oh shit. What does one do? In my case I moved back into lane and slowed, as nonchalantly as I could under the circumstances, down to a more moderate velocity. Ever looking in the mirror to see if he was of a mind for pursuit...which did not happen.

Still, I hate being on the wrong side of the road so I like to get past and back on my side of the road ASAP...it's safer that way y'know.coughcough

Took a bit of vid in there but it turns out a bug had met with the lens protector, varnishing it with spooge, which, sadly, obfuscated the pics a bit. Bugger.

Video. Not the best quality the XD can produce - bug spooge on lens, not vertically aligned, facing a little low...maybe I should have checked the camera first...

Easy as pie! Done it in the car in two days, slept a few hours on one side and then on the ferry. Done it going both north and south. I wish I could join you but I don't think my ass would cope...

P.S. I took the earliest crossing on the ferry both times. Less traffic etc and easier to sleep :) Oh, and the water tends to be calmer too if your of the sea sick variety like myself...

Everyone needs to get down to Hamilton Motorcycles and test ride their demo fleet.

Just took the 2013 ZX6R out and was blown away by how good it is. Also took an Arai out for a demo. Excellent helmet shame about the price.

They have the following available to demo:

Ninja ZX6R
Ninja ZX10R
Ninja ZX14 (pretty sure its this and not the concours)
Ninja 650
Ninja 300

looks like 20-25 people now attending - looking for to a relaxing Sunday arvo with a few beers and some good food!!

For those that want to finish the ride and drop bikes at home and car it to Jims (like we plan to do) his address is 75 Lewis street, Glenview. Sometime around 3.30ish to 4.00ish.

See you at Whatawhata at 12.30

I'm assuming it will be ok to just bike there? I live a bit far out of town to warrant going home to get the car... Anyone else going straight there that I could follow? (I don't know Hamilton very well :sweatdrop)

I'd just like to say a big thank you! It was a great day, and an awesome BBQ. It was fun riding with such a cool bunch of people. Special thank to Murray for setting it all up, and Jim for being the best host. :2thumbsup

Hope to see you all out there again soon! (I'd write more, but I was running out of superlatives).

Oh no! Doesn't sound like you're having a good week. Hopefully things will improve tomorrow.
