View Full Version : Waikato: Laxed out rides

Yea im keen either day, sounds good if the weather is ok.
Highway 22 should be ok by now, im the contract engineer incharge of road marking on WDC reseals, they were sealed/painted about 6 weeks ago, if there is still loose chip ill make a scene at work
Well I went through weekend before last, and it was terrible. My friend summed it up nicely "I hated it!"
So what is the consensus on sunday?
Murray
6th May 2010, 20:28
No consensus - Those wanting to ride meet at the Hotel to leave at 10.00. Going to Huntly, Hetherington Road and when it hits SH22 either left to Raglan or right to Port Waikato.
Personally I like the Raglan option as it is more of a loop than a there and back trip. But then again not sure if me and Trina will be riding as work rules and I have to pick someone up from the airport. bugger, bugger
Huh?
...
handicap saloon car races, WRC driving demonstrations, tyre changing competitions, driver autograph sessions and much, much more.
Well if this is the case. They're basing the event around the WRC and the father-in-law is part of the "saloon car's". The competitors were told (who told me) that they're not having a 2-day event because the rally boys wanted to use the track on Sunday. As always, not the best communication amongst the motorsport boys.
Yeah i'm gonna side with Sil3ntwar on this one .. the Hampton downs events calander has the WRC there on Saturday
The moral of story is I get free tickets to the WRC SS, viewing from one of the apartments :D With access to where ever I wanna go.
Bugger. hahaha I suppose this works a little better;)

Oh, good on them for being inclusive. I support the paralympics and I think it's fantastic those guys are getting the opportunity to race around Hampton Downs too. A tag line for this event could be 'Downs at the Downs'. ;)

Well Donna now has her full class 6 license & is now looking at upgrading her wheels , gonna start by taking some 600's out and see what she likes. :scooter: Anyway the old faithful CBF 250 is on trade me, so if any of you know someone looking for a good lil learners bike, here's the link :
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-289138217.htm
REGO TIP
fill in a MR 27 at your local VTNZ to change the date your rego ends (just B4 july 1) then when your rego due you can buy 15 months at the old price. Then this winter put reo on hold & you could easily get 18 months @ the old price. Done it to our 2. Worth a crack I reckon.

haha there'll be a shitstorm if it ain't. But the bet is it'll be here on Wednesday. Well 2 people have predicted it for then anyway. 3 others (including mine) have already been and gone. So lets see if the majority get it right.
It'll be interesting to see how much rego I get with it. If it's 6 or 12 months. I hope it's 12 but I don't really have a say in it.

Of course it's shitty weather from now on. That means I more than likely get the new wheels and it'll be gail force winds and torrential rain so I won't even be able to walk outside let alone ride.

Talking of black... I experienced some particularly considerate driving yesterday while I was riding down TeRapa Rd. Nice enough to catch my attention. When I looked at the polite black car as I was passing... whaddya know 'Q-moto' on the side.

Yeah the DR is like my kids in that respect... anything that gets them dirty, muddy and soaked they LOVE.
Dont let the gale force winds stop you.. if they are in the right direction you will save on gas!

Oh no, this is gonna turn into one of those "I was a polite car driver and the bike didn't wave when I let him pass" threads :) haha. I hope you're not being sarcastic and the car was being polite? Nothing like getting bad publicity from those that have your sticker on their car.
I'm certainly more polite to bikers than cars when I'm in the automobile.

Now, this is true. Always look at the bright side...I just need the bike to prove the theory! Also riding with the wind means you don't notice it. I wonder if that'll work for hurricanes? Might get dizzy but it'll be worth seeing if it works.

Nah. I'm being straight up, whoever was driving was unexpectedly polite. I had expected to get cut off by them pulling out into the street, then into my lane, but they saw me, made clear change of indication, slowed down to let me pass, then moved into my lane. Not the usual around those parts.
I'm much more polite to bikers than other drivers when I'm in a car too. Hopefully that balances out against some of the other drivers I see.

Certainly not but I ride more like a nanna now so it's all good. I'm pissed the weather is crap this weekend cause it would have been good getting some more miles on it. I've hit the big 5 O. I will return to riding again later in life.. you know.. like all those 40yr old born again bikers LOL... Nah :)
Haha, for some of us, you get to about 40 and realise that you've been taking life far too seriously (and/or wasting time and money on drinking too much ...etc) and that you need to have some real fun before it's all over.
Born again and it's choice!

Good crowd down last night, I think about 18-20 in the end with all the comings and goings. Good to see some of the old faces and some new ones too. Very enjoyable night
A few interested in a ride on Sunday so meet at the carpark at the Kingsgate at 10.00 am. Anyone with a burning desire to do a particular route just post it up. Maybe first in first served???

I couldn't get organised for 10 so went for a ride by meself a couple of hours later.
However, I got fuckin cold as and had to cut my trip short, after bout 2 hours, 'cause my fingers went numb as - when I got home they were actually friggin blue! Must get me decent winter gloves.
I headed out to H22 and followed a couple of bikes out towards Waingaro - was up the butt of 1 bike on the corners but didn't have the juice on the straights - she eventually pulled over and let me go on my merry way - cheers for that if your on KB!

Gentle-ish lap around the coro loop today, with Roy n Dally & Donna 2 up with me. Road wet all the way around but we only got wet on the last stretch home from Te Aroha.
Not many other bikes at all & in fact only saw 1 other bike until we got back on the Thames-Paeroa road & passed a group of 15 or so. The other bike we saw was a mate we often ride with, who WAS supposed to be with us but with Txt's lost in translation we ended up doing it the reverse way to him & we passed each other just outta Whitianga.

Took The Vixen to Raglan and back yesterday - left about 8.45 am. A bit of fog this side of the hill but clear on t'other side. First chance to give vixen her legs (gently!). Noice Boike. Plenty of cage traffic providing the odd chance to go YOWWWWWWLing past...:devil2:
I have yet to adjust to the rate of acceleration...what would be a gentle squeeze on the SV results in lunacy on this bike...
I gotta agree. She was a bit nippy in the weekend. At least the weather held out. I'm probably thinking wearing more than a t-shirt under the jacket would have helped with the cold. It's amazing how quicker the HTFU pills wear off. Maybe the cold had something to do with my head not really being in it on the ride. Oh well, at least I got some more k's on the bike and can now "officially" rev to "6k".

I never had trouble with the SV seat. I thought they were ok. The DR is a new level however.

It took me a while to get used to the other one. "Ass-toughness" especially. In saying that when I started riding wifies GSXF to try and get my fix, I got sorer wrists, forearms and butt. Now going back to the 675, the wrist especially is having a few issues. It's not bad just something I have to work with. I pretty much hang on like a 4 fingered person would and it buts some stress on the other hand muscles.
I'm looking at getting the seat changed so that should sort a few things out. I suppose it took me about 2000kms before the body was bent and buckled enough to handle the "torture rack" :) I've heard people say they're had to sell their 675's after injuries because it really makes them more noticeable...that AIN"T happening!! haha
But the gixxers are quite comfy bikes.

I never seem to have problems with wrists or arms for some reason - prolly 'cause I don't actually support anything with the arms and wrists - I tend to use the abs for support I think...I like to be very light on the bars - the less I interfere, the better the bike behaves...
Bum, however, has to be in contact with something. I prefer it not to be a concrete slab...mind you, I did sell my sheepskin seat cover this morning...don't need it for the gixxer.

Yeah been a crazy month, have a look at waikato weekender page E8 thats ruined last Sunday and tomorrow and other work has stuffed a few Sundays before that. However off Next Sunday and the following so will be looking for a ride those days. Generally if someones keen to do a particular ride first in first served just post it up, anywhere from 200-300km's is good. Try and get it in the calender if it is a more organised ride.
Hey Guys, so you meet at the Kingsgate at 10am?
Yep as above, some rides are more organised than others and tend to get bigger numbers if in the calendar but if not genrally 2,3,4,5 riders at least will turn up, depends on the weather some days. Wednesday nights at the Te rapa tavern still gets good numbers from 5.30 ish onwards with the pint of juice and burger at $8 a good deal (don't drink and drive)
Does the brekkie thing still happen?
Yep a full buffet breakfast is still available for $10 between 9.30ish and 10.00 for LOR's. Some take it up, especially with the more organised rides.
SPECIAL THANKS to mikemike104 for giving finance (plug to first credit union) to a new rider who has purchased Trina's bike. This now means Trina has no bike to go for her full license on so thanks to Donna for the loan offer of her bike (if it doesnt sell). This means Trina can't ride her new old dunga GB400 as she doesnt have her full license. Wouldnt want her riding anything above a 250 on a restricted license would we??? Of course none of you lot have, have you???

Magic day for riding...couldn't do the LOR but did get out for about 160km...Pirongia, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Arapuni Road, back via Maungatautari Rd to Leamington, Kaipaki Rd, Mystery Creek Rd, Raynes Rd and back into Glenview...
Saw what may have been the LOR on Maungatautari Rd...?
Great day - clear cold air - could see forever...
That wasn't us on Maungatautari Rd. Quasi suggested we head down there (he had to leave) and I could for the life of me remember where it was. It dawned on me when we rode past on the main road.
It was a fantastic ride too Murray!
Prob'ly my favourite ride so far - great roads and cool scenery.
Pleased you made it back okay Spaz.
Good work on the route, you know places I aint never heard of!
Shit mate, you gotta get out more! I thought we where gonna take Ngarome Rd (sp?) on our ride (wouldn't have worked I know). Now that road you'll love! I forgot how good that road is where Castle Rock is too. Not too tight, nice and flowing. Might have to do a loop around there to build up some bike k's.

Just have to watch that Ngaroma Rd during the winter as alot of the corners won't dry out till mid/late spring & with it being so narrow it slows it up a bit.. We nearly went Ngaroma Rd but i'd made the first part of the route quite tight and twisted, it was nice to open it up a bit and get some forward motion on..
P.S. Nice bike Brett :niceone:

Dead right it is Okororire that we are heading 2. Milan is planning up what he calls Milans Meandering Mystery Tour to get there!!
Theres usually always a number of bikes and cars there so always interesting place to stop.
8 people said last night at dinkies that they will be coming so should be a good ride. Hope the weather stays good!
It is in the calendar so please register. reason for this is some people who do not know of LOR thread look at calendar and also if you are registered we will wait an extra 5-10 minutes for you. So do not register if you are not going to turn up. You simply register by going into the calendar entry and click "I will be attending"

The super cool news though is that tomorrow I'll be finalising the deal for a wicked cool bike; should be here next week. The question is whether I'll be able to stay off it till I'm legal. Perhaps I should give the keys to Murray!

My master plan is to add a speed triple to the shed once I'm a bit more confident and experienced.
That way I can have a classic and a bad boy - that suits both my moods.

I makes you appreciate what you've been learning on when you jump from your bigger toy to your learner  I tell ya, I'd been riding the Daytona since I got it (the old one) and when I just on the 250 to go for a test, I went into a corner that was half the speed I'd do on the Daytona, hit the brakes, and didn't slow down half as fast a I thought I would! Managed to do some "backing it in" to get around the corner. hahaa I wouldn't have dreamed of doing that on the Daytona (maybe the tyres were a little better ;) )

Areas of morning cloud and a few fog patches in sheltered places. Cloud increasing during the day and scattered light rain spreading from the north in the evening. Northeast winds, freshening in the afternoon.
Tomorrow
Sunday 6
Rain, with heavy falls possibly developing and northeasterlies becoming strong and gusty in exposed places. Rain easing late afternoon or evening with winds abating.

RIDING IN THE RAIN
Given that it didn't look like I'd get any riding done this weekend, I decided early this morning to go out in the crappiest weather we'd had so far. Which I did.
Once you can overcome the inertia of getting into all the gear and then putting wets on over the top of all that, rain riding is pretty cool. Especially as it was this morning with the wind blowing like buggery as well...
Didn't go far - Te Awamutu, Pirongia, return. But it blew out the cobwebs and I felt a lot better about the world afterwards.
Oh and the new set of rainbirds did the job supremely well...

Went out for a frosty run this morning - left about 7.15am, temperature 0.7C at the time...verily, 'twas a willy-wilter...despite the heated grips. (Someone needs to invent a motorbike peter-heater...)
Nice run though - super clear air, dry road, not too much traffic...
Came across a dude in a van on the way back who had tried to do a u-turn on Meadway Road and had gotten his van stuck down the grass verge - wet slippery grass and a bit of a deep dip off the side of the road. Stopped to see if he needed anything - he asked me to whip up to Krippner's Garage to ask the dude there for a tow out. Which I did. But the garage guy just said "Nah - we don't do recoveries, only WOF's..." and wouldn't help...He gave me a lecture about how nobody helped anybody any more because of "liability"...WTF? Never heard such bullshit in my life...Well damn, I would have helped - I meantasay, I did as far as I could...didn't think the gixxer was up to towing a van out of a hole though...
Luckily when I got back to the van the driver had got someone else to help him out. Someone who was not afraid of "liability"...
Gawd, what next?

The temp broke into triple digits today, thats about 38 -39 deg celcius. Thats bloody hot. Any place that has air con is a god send.
Seeing some nice bikes, lots of Harleys and Gold Wings, but also seen a couple of lowered, and stretched Busas, and bloody Gixxers are quite popular too. Not a lot of people wearing protective gear, although you do have to wear a helmet here in Georgia. Will try and get some pics to post if i get a chance.

I wish i was back home at the moment.
Cripes! too hot for me. You can almost understand why people aren't wearing too much protective gear in those temps.

MAKING IT INTERESTING:
Sooooo..most wimped out today, did they? For shame..!
Now one of the most boring rides you can do is from The Tron to d'Auckland straight up SH1. Yes? Not always...:shifty:
I had to do the trip today on my own. Most Sundays, Lilfox is with me so we travel together in the cage (being as how she won't get on the back of anything under my control...hmmph! :weird: ). Now never being one to pass up a chance to take the bike, :ride:I decided that a little bit of rain wouldn't hurt and would indeed add interest to the journey. Besides, the sun was out when I left and it all looked OK...:sunny:
Gassed up at Gull and headed north. Got as far as Te Kowhai Road and the first squall hit. Hell's fucking bells, it fair blew the bike all over the road and the rain was so hard I could barely see through the visor. :eek5: To the extent that I debated whether I was being insane biking in those conditions...
Fortunately I had taken a couple of HTFU pills before leaving and the little voice within said "get yr arse into ya pansy!". :ar15: So I did.
That first squall lasted until the North end of Huntly. The next one started about Ohinewai. And so it went on, all the way up. The Bombay hill was fun with the wind accelerating over the top and causing even more grief. :sweatdrop
Destination was at the end of the South Western motorway. Which crosses the Manukau at Mangere Bridge. Where the wind funnels across the water and picks up even more speed. Interesting - especially with those narrow lanes where all the roadworks are on the elevated bridge...
But I got there in one piece. Suffice to say that no new world land speed records for motorbikes were set. But I did get very good fuel economy from The Vixen - about 55mpg in the old money. Just shows, if ya stick it in 6th and sit around 6000rpm, the whirlpool in the tank is much smaller...
Course I had to come back as well. And this was made more interesting by the fact that some fuckwit had forgotten to swap out the tinted visor hadn't 'e? So it was dark visor, in super heavy rain, some hail, in a storm force gale, at night, on a crowded motorway populated by homicidal maniacs in huge steel projectiles...that DID make it interesting...
But not too bad in the end. I found that I got used to the dark visor fairly quickly. Put it this way, I could see more through the dark visor than I could through my glasses in the rain with the visor open...so it stayed shut.
Anyhoo, got home safe and sound without mishap - no real dramas at all really. No leaks in the gear, stayed warm, only about two loonies in cars - bit of a doddle really. :zzzz:
But definitely more interesting than usual.
TBH, I think the conditions are the worst I have EVER ridden in even back in the dark ages. Certainly the worst for several millennia...

Yep its been to long and the need was there. 5 bikes went and it ended up being a good ride apart from the visor fogging up all the way to Putaururu. Cleaned it there and it was fine after that. Wee tip - never think you may clear a fogged up visor by blowing on it, bit scarey riding blind for a wee while and locking up the back tyre. At least the worst of the weather was while we were inside at the okoroire hotel having a hot coffee or beer. The locals there thought we were pretty cool or mad being out in that weather but we did see about 5 other bikes on the whole trip. All good fun and looking forward to the next ride already!!
Trina and I wear Mobig which is pretty good in the wet and quite warm and not to expensive. Boyds have it on sale regularly and you can get it through motomail on the internet or visit their stores in Auckland.

Wet Weather Gear:
I wear Rainbird jacket and trou, over the top of the leathers. Para sells it - about $135 for the set. My last set lasted eighteen years before I ripped the trousers enough to make me replace the set.
These are lightweight and can compress down to a very small package that I carry in my seat bag at all times. If I didn't get wet in yesterday's weather, I can pretty well say "they don't leak"...

Went for a ride today as i was given the day off work to sort out my Wintec stuff.
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Scotsman+Valley+Rd&daddr=Bell+Rd+to:Tahuroa+Rd+to:-37.76203,175.45166&hl=en&geocode=FT6qv_0d9DZ1Cg%3BFS9CwP0dM7B2Cg%3BFWM-wP0dkvF1Cg%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=3&sz=13&via=1,2&sll=-37.741535,175.487709&sspn=0.093258,0.181789&ie=UTF8&z=13
Did that loop then did scotsman again but turned around at the end of bell road and came back. I was pretty fkn cold the whole way. Makes it hard to enjoy when you can't move much!
Oh yeah and i hadn't ridden the bike for a few weeks. So i thought i would jump on the bike to go to Wintec in the morning. I jumped on turned the key hit the starter and...nothing. Ah kill switch. Turned that on then it didn't want to start. Bit of choke and a few more tries and its alive. So i ride of down the road and realise the bike doesn't want to accelerate. Then it stalls at the intersection a few hundred metres down the road.
Couldn't get it started so i started pushing it back home then i thought i would check the fuel tap. Switched to off. Fucken Sidewinder (gay ass homo faggot who doesn't even ride anymore <_<) decided to play with my bike since it was sitting for a few weeks. When I get home later in the day the first thing i am asked by said bum boy is "did you run outta gas?" :spanking:

 :niceone:
They can drain your battery, especially if they aren't put in properly. Trumpy electronics aren't that good to start with either (doesn't matter if they're new or old). You can get good alarms they don't drain it, but they're pretty heavy with the back-up power. You wanna check how much of a discount you'll get from the insurance company to see how long it'll take to pay back.
Personally, just an immobiliser may not cut it and I would only go for for an alarm with tilt and proximately thingie as well. But I really haven't seen the need for it so far. I always park the bike where heaps of people can see it.
And people respect Triumphs more :D
If I was looking at ever getting one, I'd probably swing towards these http://www.talonalarms.com/, but you certainly pay for them.

Weyhey Dazz - that is so friggin exciting!! I cant wait to spot you rocking round town on that mean machine. I bought a new air-filter today and 4 litres of Motul... but somehow it's not quite as exciting. I think I may have left some drool on that yellow SV at Boyd's though (maybe Wysper's old machine?).
yep that was mine. fun bike those SV's.
Pfft my sale is on the 24, 25 and 26th to then ;-)

boots, pants (cordura or similar LOL) and later jacket and helmet.
Unfortunately I doubt I could afford Quasi prices. I have the Road Suit but that isn't the best for adventure riding :)
