That'll be a nice way to spend the day... Enjoy. There's a nice cafe in Bennydale :2thumbsup

More importantly for old riders, there's a loo along side the cafe.:laugh:

I like the countryside south of the Bombays, nice to see it. I cant get there for a while yet. :brick:

I have no idea what this one is but.....

Got one very similar in my street, some sort of Ford Flat head V8 I think, comes out for a spin on the odd occasion.
Narrow tyres etc, but sounds both lazy and cool when it starts off. Never in a rush.
Got to wonder about those tyres. The people have a few other classic cars too.

I will have a better look at it next time I see it.

More importantly for old riders, there's a loo along side the cafe.:laugh:

Its like a bowling alley, the running water sounds made it easier....

The locals were a bit suspicious as usual, but the service was excellent.

The coupe in my pic is a 38/39 Chevvy. (I think).

Here is a video of that ride last week after playing with Live movie maker. Have also posted it in my rides thread but dont think anyone much views that.

Cool,
I will have to check out the one in my street, they only bring it out on rare occasions.

Reminds me I want to go to the Southward Car Museum again.

Last time, there was a very nice gentleman you kindly showed us under the bonnet of several cars.
He was Sir Len Southwards' mechanic. He only helped out on Sundays from memory.

He was full of info - I like going to these types of places and meeting the people who can show you around a bit.
Only things I would have liked to do more was to listen to some of the engines run - apart from driving or being driven around.

Going to make a list of places to visit in NZ for this type of thing now that my Mbike Bucket list is almost complete.
Will try and do it by bike - Nth Is anyway.

Thanks Awa355 - can you post a link to your rides thread
Just seen your video - reminds me I got to figure out how to do that, and make dvds of some of the videos I have (non mbike)
keep up the good work. Normally I don't like music over the bike, quite liked this one though it was COOL (temperature as well)
I would be worried about the black ice myself so taking it easy/smooth is the way to go.

Sometimes some nice stills come off the GoPro. This is of the Mangakino lake. I use one note to snap the stills as I roll through a video playback.

I had to travel down to Tekuiti for a hospital appointment so chose to ride down. Was great clear winter sunshine. Parked up down there, got the business done and came out to the carpark. Then I remembered that not only had I forgotten to take the GoPro off the bike, I had left it running. Buggar, that kills any chance of getting some nice late afternoon footage on the return trip.

I left it going and decided to take a chance. As it was, the camera was still recording when I got back home. Quite pleased, 14.4GB over 2hr 21min and still going. :niceone: Out of town I turned left into Oparure road, then into Fullerton rd. The late sun on the countryside was brilliant. Only drawback was riding into the sun which made for some awfully dark corners to ride through. I tried to get some stills off the GoPro to show the effects of the sun shining through the trees but the camera is setup for the emphasis to be on the road, and I'd left my camera at home.

Here are a few photos.

At Waitomo I turned right and then left onto Huarua rd. this comes out on the Waitomo road just short of Oto. There is a lovely view over the farmland from this road but unfortunately, the bike wasn't looking towards the road side.

A nice 'crisp' day but a reminder to myself to always carry a camera.

Looking good mate !! :woohoo: what type of Gopro you using ? I presume you have a remote as well ?

It is a basic Hero 3 white model. When my wife said you decide which one you want and I'll buy it for you for Christmas, I did the right thing and selected the cheapest model as I figured it would do the job and not come with whistles and bells that I would never use. In hindsight, I should've picked the silver model as they have a superior lense for low light usage and a few more options in the settings. Spent a small fortune on genuine mounts etc then settled on a $3.40 pipe clamp fixed to the upper fork.

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w420/awa355/DSC00882.jpg

The gopro site says the remote pulls about 10% more life from the battery, but my experience is that it drains more. I dont use the remote very often.

This wee clip is from Fullerton road. Only 60sec's.

Weather as sharp as it is the next couple of nights, I'm pleased (in one sense) that I had to hold off doing my midnight ride to Welly for breakfast tomorrow night. So, tomorrow I will get out late morning and go exploring more roads between here and Tekuiti.

My weekend off, so on Sunday I might well take a ride around the Waipa/Waitomo roads.

Where you heading on sunday?

Not sure. Either out to the coast, Kawhia/Harbour rd/ Waitomo, or through Bennydale/ Whakamaha/ Old Taupo rd?. I'd leave about 10-11am so less chance of ice in the shadows. (Waitomo-Te anga would likely hold ice all day).

A shorter enjoyable ride would be some of the back roads I have ridden lately down to Tekuiti, a bite to eat there, and return via side roads to Waitomo/ Oto. Roads all in good condition, Probably wouldn't suit the hi speed riders tho. I used to always be looking for long rides over roads I hadn't ridden before, now, I'm quite happy to re ride local roads and this time of year about 2-3 hours out on the bike is a good winter's ride.

It was a buggar, I didn't want to go out but the wife finally pushed me out the door and sent me on my way. So I did. A short 100ishk's and a couple of roads ridden that I had always gones past previously. I will write up a short report under the ride reports later.
Today's tikitour was to suss out a couple of roads to go back to on Sunday. Here is a photo and a short clip from todays ride.

Have to post this pic taken from Lurman road, as an attachment, as photobucket is down. The clip is a brief look at Sircombe road.

Do the low bars mean a forward stretch? I dislike the looks of the high pull backs on the little Yammy, but have to admit, they make for a comfortable ride.

A few more cc's would be useful, however what I have is what I ride. The 250 is an easier bike to ride through corners compared to the XVS650 I had. Miss the shaft drive tho'.

Thought you must have been hibernating! Even I've been riding lately!!!! Although it's only TA to Cambridge for the past 4 weeks as I transitioned the new owners of mum's business. Has been interesting - rode all 3 of the bikes in the family because they've all been sitting there not running for months and months.

Mine had a shat battery. Not bad going since it's been sitting for so bloody long and it's the original (5 years). New battery, but then the engine warning light wouldn't go off. I think that's now fixed by looking at the exhaust valve. Well, it was off yesterday so we'll see the next time I ride if it's still good.

Then, the old mans bike wouldn't start. Turned out rats had eaten the wiring! $200 later, which was bloody lucky really, and that ones sorted. The only one that didn't have problems was mum's KTM.

I worked out riding in sub-0 mornings, with only leather gloves, is a bit bloody rough. The digits hurt a bit defrosting. She's been FUCKEN fresh the last month riding. Character building though :baby:

I'm thinking about doing a night ride to Kawhia tonight. It will be a full moon, scattered clouds, no rain, no frost. If I go, will leave about 8pm.

Hoping to get some photos from the lookout, and maybe of the harbour under the full moon. Will be cool but dry.

Got back about 10pm. Was quite mild, never felt cold until the last 20k from home. I'm disappointed in the photos. Took two point & shoot cameras and neither 'night' modes worked that well. Had the gopro recording stills but this has no night time capability so not worried about the 991 pics taken on that.

Reflected light from the Oparau road house.

It's all about throttle control... plus: My Yoshi R55 full system sounds great at higher revs :D

I've actually got it mounted to the fairing stay (the metal part that runs from the frame to behind the gauges), using the rollbar mount with an aluminum curved extender bar.

I should've done something more like that rather than depending on the suction cup :(

When is that Raglan run?.

Filled up the lawnmower fuel tin this morning, came home, looked at the lawns, and promptly emptied the gas into the bike tank. Took the 250 out for a local ride. It can be quite an art, cold starting the Virago if it has been sitting for too long.
An open neck leather jacket is bloody cold after the high wrap around collar of the cordura jacket. Just a T shirt on under the leather jacket didn't help matters much I guess.

I might get out somewhere tomorrow for a few hours. I had thought of heading out Raglan way then turning off to Te Mata, Bridal falls, Ruapuke roads. Both require some back tracking unless you dont mind gravel, but all are great riding and doubling back through those corners etc, just doubles the fun.

Can't, I'll be working all night and sleeping through the morning/early afternoon. I would enjoy the ride, but sitting in a pub eating and drinking while out with the bike is not my thing. I cannot see any point in wasting a riding day by leaning on a table.

However, if it's a good day and I get my head down early, I might get out and meet up at Ngahuawahia to do the ride bit. It would be good to meet you and a few others.

Years ago the Police use to watch this site, the bragging and heroic talk found a good number being looked at closely, on one occasion, eight lost their licence from one group ride. Easy pickings when they (the cops) know where the ''offending'' is taking place on a regular basis.

One cop car followed three of us to the start point of one of my group rides. I had posted (as ride organiser) where I would meet up for fuel, that's when we noticed the cop car across the road from the servo. He followed us for 10-12 km to the start point, where he came and talk to us about how we conduct ourselves on the road. We were parked up at Hooten reserve, a captive audience really.

South to Whakamaru for coffee and the pie then over the dam and back up to Old Taupo and north via that route. Back home via Arapuni Road.

Not a lot of traffic either, I did pass a ute which looked to have a big cooler loaded on the back, then after stopping in Whanga for a bit I caught up to the same ute heading out towards Hikuai. Seen signs of a few slips too through the Karangahake gorge and heading through to Thames.
Couple of close calls, one just out of Gordonton where I found a cager on my side of the road (oncoming) for no apparent reason (got my heart pumping afterwards) and just general noobness of oncoming overtaking maneuvers.

Great catching up with awa finally, also and of course meeting up with the usual suspects from the LOR at Oko!
Slipped out of Dorkland at about 10.30am'ish and arrived moments after the LOR guys from the Tron just after 12 O'clock.
Noice bike there Nigel.
Always a pleasure arriving at Oko, been my home pub for the best part of thirty years.
Weather was a bit overcast and cool heading down, but on the way home, the only cold bit was as usual going up the West side of the Waikato through Ngaruawahia and Huntly under the hills in the shade and right next ot the biggest outdoor fridge ( The Mighty Waikato River)
Not too many fools out there today, had a great weekend of riding as we both headed down to Raglan on Saturday, the $20 buck pizza from the Raglan Pub was Owesome! Lovely day for a ride on the 22

Brilliant bike for the west coast roads. I looked hard at the 150 Honda and the Kawasaki 150 dual purpose bikes earlier this year, then decided to go with the 250 cruiser for now. The Honda shop here in Te A have (or did have) a container load of the adventure cross tread tyres to fit the 150 Honda. The Honda was $4,000+orc. The Kwaka was 5G plus costs.

Tomorrow, I am going to ride some of the side roads between the Raglan rd and the upper harbour.

Yeah the guys down at Hamilton Honda where brought the bike offered me a few sets for nothing, apparently they come in with the tires but are often sold as farm bikes so they take them off and have them sitting around.

Got this bike for $4070 with ORC good deal from Honda Hamilton :)

The Tuakau - Raglan road is no longer a State Highway. So it isn't maintained to even the very minimal standard of secondary state highways.

It is due for some safety improvements along the same lines as the south Coro loop.

I've ridden through winters over many years but pick my times these days. Worst was riding Putaruru to Rotorua in the early '90's. The old road had more corners back then, more shaded and I'm sure the frosts were heavier and more frequent then. A couple of corners around the 'Highland Hills' farm would hold a good frost throughout the day. Rode a CX500 back then.

Will leave the Te A caltex stn about 9.30 and take the Te Pahu road out to the Raglan road. (be there about 10.)

Sunday; 200k and home by lunchtime. Carried on pass the Bridal Falls and looped around Kawhia Te Papatapu roads back to Ruapuke rd (there and back) then back home. Weather was iffy at the start, but turned out good. Took a few photos so will post them and a word or two in my Waikato rides thread. LOR rides right here within this thread. Fat Bikers (FBMC) also have their own web page (www.fatbikersmc.co.nz) on which they show upcoming rides.

Went for a ride 'around the block' this afternoon. Finished up at the Walter Scott Reserve off Pekanui road. It is a 2 hour walk around this small reserve, so I will go back next weekend and take a wander through it. A couple of photos from today's ride.

Looking back from the start of the walking track.

Even miles away from anywhere (well, 10m in actually), i keep getting told where to go.:psst:

A bit further towards the top of Pekanui road.

About 2k of gravel to the carpark.

FBMC are having there Xmas bash and included in that is a ride to Kawhia on Saturday 12th December - For any LOR riders who want to join their ride we are looking at meeting them at Whatawhata at approx 11.45.

If you are a member of FBMC or interested in being part of their group they do have their own website and more details of their Xmas outing are available within there, in the calendar area. (Even though it comes under Dec 2016 meetings, rides & events)

See ya NEXT Year TOO then Murray.
Already looking forward to this years Christmas bash at the Kingsgate, last years was a doozie.
It does,(refer to the 2016 events) guess we should get the ol web master Mr FM hisself to amend that at some point in time.

...has been sealed. After seven years of riding over the three little bits of gravel, I went through there today and they were all sealed up. Never thought I'd live to see the day.

Rode it today and it is amazing! Saw a repsol in a ditch with a group of about 20 stopped. Some of those corners do sneak up on ya! The crash was on one of the signposted 45s though :pinch:

Repsol, says it all.
Can't just enjoy the road and not fall off, got to push it.

There's a blind, left hander that tightens just where you think you it's going to open up. That's nearly caught me a couple of times.

It's a great section of road but you need to be wide awake if you're pushing it.

LOL,na the truth hurts, but not as much as being the idiot that falls off a marked up go fast machine on a road that is clear, dry and open. Point taken Moi, but still, open road visibility and speed should go hand in hand.

People fall off all kinds of bikes. Nothing to do with the type.

Nice, Did you stop at the Bennydale Cafe? (Wooden Heart IIRC)

I did a trip to Te Kuiti from Akl and back yesterday. Roads are in quite good condition apart from the little corners just after the Te Kawa intersection (it was wet there)

Rode backwards again did you AWA? :bleh: show off.

Hmm, I thought the vanishing point was where the sides of the road appear to merge, not when the corner becomes blind! But I could well be wrong ...

You do have some nice roads down there. Must plan an overnight trip this summer.

But then Coro is just over an hour from home, so can't complain [emoji1]

Last Autumn I was looking at re enacting a July midnight ride (done 23 years ago) from Putaruru to Wellington for breakfast. A combination of work uncertainties and a further 20+ years of learned common sense prevailed and I pulled the plug on that ride.

However!, I haven't completely come to my senses yet so have another ridiculous but slightly more appealing ride in mind.

Next April I am looking at a Friday midnight ride from Putaruru (central) to Gisborne to pick up a Saturday morning Herald from a local dairy. Breakfast down on the water front then a leisurely ride home perhaps via the Napier road. The roads should be far more interesting at night than SH1, the weather a bit more predictable and settled. Tonight I will be checking my work roster to confirm my rostered weekend off that month. Probably the 15th April.

Will have to review the route, Put to Gis is only 3 1/2 hrs. I might go south at Rotorua and swing by Murapara.

Memories of a late night trip to Tauranga, in the infamous days of the Mormon Few. Queen's Birthday Weekend, can't remember what year, but would've been around 2006-2008.

We camped on the beach!

I drove the Old Taupo Rd from Toke on my way back to Auckland today. Much more pleasant than SH1 but you have to watch out for trucks during the week.
