The word unprecedented has been used a lot lately and the current situation is unprecedented. Almost.
In the early seventies the DoJ had evidence that the Governor of Maryland was corrupt. You want this contract to build a bridge? Give me 10 grand and it's yours. That type of thing. As the investigation proceeded it became evident that this had been the custom in Maryland for some time and had actually involved successive Governors. Where was the previous Governor? He was in the White House, he was Vice President Spiro T Agnew. And the investigations indicated he had taken his corrupt practices with him to the new job.
The investigation eventually culminated in some forty corruption charges against Agnew. He said it was a politically motivated witch hunt, 'my political enemies', 'corrupt DoJ', blah blah blah. All familiar today.
The matter became urgent. Watergate was coming to a head, it was looking as if Nixon would resign or be removed imminently which would promote Agnew to President, and he was likely headed to a jail cell instead of the Oval Office.
I can remember hearing the item on the local radio news. Agnew had resigned and he had pleaded guilty to a single charge of tax evasion. A deal had been done, but he was gone.
That's history, not a crystal ball, but it may be that history repeats at least partially.

You've got to remember that the Republicans then were largely law abiding. They were horrified by Watergate and it was party pressure which got Nixon out.
They also put pressure on Agnew.
The current crop of GOP senators and representatives are totally different. Apologists and enablers for Trump. Some even calling for armed insurrection via twitter.
He's never ever going to accept a plea deal which would take him out of politics. He hasn't yet bled his supporters completely dry. Plenty of money to be made yet.
This is going to run and run. The US is basically fucked.

More bad news for Trump. The judge hearing the other E Jean Carroll case in New York has approved Carroll's motion to add the remarks made by Trump the day after her five million claim was successful. He had repeated the defaming remarks at his CNN 'Town hall'. And the judge also approved the addition of another ten million dollars to her claim.
She doesn't really have to prove anything. The main question now is mainly about how much?

Judge Cannon who has been appointed to preside over Trumps trial was expected to recuse herself. People have been waiting for indications of how she would react. Interestingly she has issued an order. The order is not controversial at all. She has ordered counsel to get security clearances. They will need to be cleared to the appropriate level to handle the documents in this case.
Most cases in the federal court system are decided by plea deals. The judge doesn't need to spend any time in court in such cases. This means that Judge Cannon's total judicial court experience amounts to fourteen days in court. That'd be OK if Trump was charged with not paying a parking fine, but 37 charges including espionage?
We await developments with interest.

it's reported that Trump's legal team advised him to return the documents and seek a deal. Trump ignored the lawyers and took the advice of Tom Fitton who apparently counselled against the advice of the lawyers. Fitton who likes to wear shirts that are too small, and who despite the impression he tries to create, is not a lawyer.
Trump should have followed Machiavelli's advice to be well advised.

Things are happening in the US. The Special Counsel's team has been talking to former Secretary of State for Georgia, Raffsenberger. "I just need 11,780 votes." The guy on that phone call.
Rudy Giuliani had a meeting with the prosecutors which leads experts to believe he is cooperating with the prosecutors. So also has Mark Meadows Trump's former Chief of Staff.
All of this leads various prominent legal experts to believe Trump is about to be indicted on another raft of charges (up to 45 more?). Likely charges are conspiracy to commit fraud against the US, or conspiracy to overthrow the US government. If found guilty of the latter Trump would be forbidden to seek any future public office but that charge would be more difficult to prove. A case could be made that because Biden had not been inaugurated there was no government to overthrow. That seems a stretch but there is a 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court so...

I wonder which billionaire sponsored this latest result you speak of?
Pollies in drag on the take:
1. Sonia Sotomayor, who joined the court in 2009 and has been paid millions of dollars from the publisher over the years, declined to recuse herself in all three instances.
2. Neil Gorsuch's property sale - Justice Neil Gorsuch sold a property he co-owned shortly after becoming a justice. He disclosed the sale, but omitted that the property was sold to the chief executive of Greenberg Traurig, one the country's biggest law firms. Greenberg Traurig frequently has cases before the high court. Gorsuch, who joined the court in 2017 and also has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in book deals with the publisher, declined to disqualify himself from the more recent case when it came before the court for consideration.
3. John Roberts wife's work as a legal recruiter raised ethics concerns for the chief justice. Jane Roberts was reportedly paid millions of dollars for placing lawyers at firms, including some with business before the Supreme Court.
4. Clarence Thomas has been especially busy with corruption - Harlan Crow Trips:Thomas has for years accepted trips from GOP megadonor and developer Harlan Crow, including on his private jet and superyacht, without disclosing them on financial disclosures as federal law requires.
Harlan Crow Tuition: Crow also paid two years of tuition for Thomas’ grandnephew Mark Martin, whom the justice has custody of, to attend two private schools in the 2000s, which cost $6,000 per month at one of the schools and were similarly not disclosed—even as Thomas did disclose a tuition payment a different friend made years earlier.
Harlan Crow Real Estate: Thomas and his family also sold a string of properties in Savannah, Georgia, to Crow in 2014 without disclosing that as required, ProPublica reports—including the home where his mother still lives—which Crow told the publication he purchased so he could eventually build a museum dedicated to the justice.
Ginni Thomas Conservative Activism: Thomas’ wife, Ginni Thomas, is a right-wing activist, which has raised considerable ethics concerns about overlap between her and her husband’s work—particularly as the New Yorker reported groups she’s been involved with have submitted briefs before the Supreme Court, including a group that has weighed in on the court’s pending case about affirmative action in university admissions.
Ginni Thomas Leonard Leo: Leo, a conservative judicial activist who’s spent billions on efforts to reshape the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, told then-conservative pollster Kellyanne Conway to give Ginni Thomas “another $25k” through a nonprofit group he advises—which then filed a brief with the Supreme Court—but conceal that the payment was for her, the Post reports, telling Conway, “No mention of Ginni, of course.”
Ginni Thomas 2020 Election: Thomas pushed efforts to overturn the 2020 election results as her husband was hearing cases on it, including sending text messages to then White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, which fueled calls for Thomas to resign or face impeachment over the perceived conflict of interest.
January 6: Ginni Thomas has also confirmed she briefly attended the rally on January 6 that preceded the attack on the Capitol building and publicly criticized the House January 6 Committee, and the justice has come under fire for failing to recuse himself in a case concerning former President Donald Trump’s records being turned over to the committee—in which he was the only justice to dissent and believe the records should have been withheld.
Ginni Thomas Funding: The Post reported in March that a conservative group Ginni Thomas formed in 2019 had raised nearly $600,000 from anonymous donors funneled through a right-wing think tank that filed an amicus brief at the Supreme Court during the same time, and ethics experts said Clarence Thomas should have recused himself from that case if his wife was paid by the group.
Financial Disclosures: Thomas has made a series of other “errors and omissions” on financial disclosure reports, includes reporting real estate income for decades from a company that shut down in 2006 and has in the past had to amend his financial disclosures multiple times, including after failing to report his wife’s income in the 2000s.

It's almost like there's something in the Constitution about both those things. One that says 'Shall not be infringed' and one that says 'nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws'
There's nothing unusual about wanting the Government to play by it's own rules.

I followed the Clarence Thomas 'corruption' claims for a while - There's a few instances where I'll agree it looks somewhat improper - but what turned it into a nothing-burger for me was that in those instances, there wasn't a case before the court where Justice Thomas and his friendship for Mr Crow (which IIRC they have been friends for nearly 30 years) has a conflict of interest.
All-in-all what I found in the reporting of it was basically a bunch of butthurt lefties attacking the most conservative judge on the court. Reading Justice Thomas' opinions - you would be hard pressed to say that he has been 'swayed' in decisions, he's been pretty consistent in his textualist positions and deferring strictly to the Constitution over his tenure as a SCOTUS Judge.
It's funny how all the talk of 'representation' goes out the window, when it's a minority that doesn't agree with leftism ;)

Good point, I was lazily going from Reuters.
Though..... when the SCOTUS repeals the 'Emancipation Act', I'm sure the Trump kids will be sitting in the first row at the Auction!
I think there's some confusion here.
There has been talk of amending the 14th amendment (which is the Emancipation/Equal rights Amendment) - but specifically the part that deals with US Citizenship by birth. The 'talk' has been around that if someone illegally enters the US and gives birth, their offspring (due to that Amendment) is now a US Citizen.
However, I put talk in quotation marks because no one has genuinely suggested an amendment to it, only hypothetical. Probably because if the Right touches the 14th amendment, the left will go after the first and second.
Come to think of it, Harlan Crow already 'owns' Clarence Thomas.
See above - it's a massive nothing burger.
And it's hilarious - because the moment someone who is (in accordance to leftist 'thought') 'Diverse', but holds a conservative opinion, the diversity requirements disappear in a puff of smoke.

The fact that all the graphs conflate an Assault Rifle with a Semi-Automatic, and all from left-wing outlets tells me that the questioners probably didn't know what they were talking about and that the results are likely bunk.
However - if we take the polls as accurate, we find an interesting problem.
67% of people oppose repealing 2A - that would be the law that says 'Shall not be infringed' - and considering that same group, by 68% are wanting to infringe on those rights tells me that the people being asked probably would need a map to navigate their way from their asshole to their elbow.

OK, so the 2A needs amending to reflect modern times, not repelling. Just make an AMENDMENT to insert some common sense gun laws in there that I listed elsewhere that you (tdl) agreed was sensible. Doing nothing is beyond stupid - and mind numbingly selfish.
Supreme court judges are there for life and represent the pinnacle of justice in arguably the most important democracy in the World, so they better be fucking squeaky clean. The four I listed are not - not even close.
Just the fact that Clarence has had a billionaire pay for very expensive paid holidays for years, his god child nephew or whatevas tuition paid for, and his mothers house purchased that she still lives in it stinks to high heaven. These people need to be beyond reproach. I give not one shit what colour, race, or sex or political team they belong to.

No doubt referring to the "Nazi gun control" story that is a cornerstone of anti-gun control proponents, even though it has been shown to be largely false
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_gun_control_argument
From the Wikipedia article:
When the Nazi party gained power, some aspects of gun regulation were loosened for Nazi party members only. The laws were tightened in other ways, such as specifically banning ownership of guns by Jews. Nazi laws systematically disarmed so-called "unreliable" persons, especially Jews while relaxing restrictions for Nazi party members. The policies were later expanded to include the confiscation of arms in occupied countries.
So, which bit exactly is false?
If I look at the Criticism section, there's nothing that debunks the factual basis of the claim: The Nazis restricted access to firearms to the Jews and this helped in their persecution of them.
Some people are trying to make the claim that the Weimar republic had heavy restrictions (which doesn't disprove the point) or that it's based on a hypothetical (Do you think the Nazis would have been as successful at rounding people up to go to Death Camps if every Jewish person was armed equal to the SS?) or that they only made up a small percntage of the population that it wouldn't have made a difference. They say that Jews were 1% of the population. However, the SS (in 1939) only made up 0.3% of the population.
And let's say we don't like invoking 1930s germany - we could look at the Soviet Union, or China or Uganda.
There's a book on the subject called Lethal Laws.

I wouldn't phrase it like that, but I'm feeling charitable.
Here's the rub - look at Husa's graphs - not anything I picked - nearly 70% opposition to touching 2A. I believe there was a yougov poll that put opposition even higher at 79%.
It seems clear the majority of Americans don't want to touch the 2nd Amdendment. Therefore as it stands - 'Shall not be infringed'.

When it first came out - I had a look at the claims - and one thing was consistently absent - an example where Justice Thomas had ruled in case that was tangentially connected to Crow, which isn't in-line with his Textualist position.
He's probably the most consistent in his positions regarding the constitution - which makes it hard to stick the label of corruption to him.
Oh and Trump does own slaves - 271 of them in fact.
Haha, good joke. I just found it funny that even Obama had family ties to Slavery, but Trump - nope, he has none. I thought that was hilarious.
That is the number of gop senators and congressmen/women who were too stupid to get rid of Trump when they were given the chance in 2019, then again in 2021 \
Looks like trump will steamroll his primary as meatballs numbers have only gone down since he declared his run officially. Your best hope is Biden runs, and going off how the mid terms went, the gop will still be toast - again.
Biden is so hard to watch now, his speech, the way he walks - looks like he will be lucky to make it to the end of next week, yet alone another 4 years. And the invisible woman VP Harris is about as popular as a soggy sandwich.
Trump and Biden = :sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::sick::s ick::sick:
Serious question though: You've experienced the world under Trump and the world under Biden - which one did you prefer?
In terms of candidates, it will probably be Trump vs Desantis - Desantis though I don't think will beat Trump.
On the Democrat side - you've got RFK who is an interesting pick. Certainly has name recognition - but he's not popular with the activist wing of the Democrats (they view him as like Thulsi Ghabbard as the Dem equivalent of a RINO and have been getting their smears in already) - After that - who?

OK, so the 2A needs amending to reflect modern times, not repelling. Just make an AMENDMENT to insert some common sense gun laws in there that I listed elsewhere that you (tdl) agreed was sensible. Doing nothing is beyond stupid - and mind numbingly selfish.
.
I don't think it needs changing The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution -- "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" -- was passed by Congress in 1789 and ratified two years later. it never mentions or alludes to, explicitly declare any right to have a semiautomatic rifle, a version of which wasn't invented until about a century later. only the right to keep and bear arms are mentioned.
The U.S. Supreme Court also has also not explicitly declared a constitutional right to semiautomatic rifles.
District of Columbia v. Heller, case in which the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26, 2008, held (5–4) that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess firearms independent of service in a state militia and to use firearms for traditionally lawful purposes, including self-defense within the home.
Heller tentatively suggested a list of “presumptively lawful” regulations, including bans on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, bans on carrying firearms in “sensitive places” such as schools and government buildings, laws restricting the commercial sale of arms, bans on the concealed carry of firearms, and bans on weapons “not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes.”
United States v. Miller supported an individual-right rather than a collective-right view, contrary to the dominant 20th-century interpretation of that decision. (In Miller, the Supreme Court unanimously held that a federal law requiring the registration of sawed-off shotguns did not violate the Second Amendment because such weapons did not have a “reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia.”) Finally, the court held that, because the framers understood the right of self-defense to be “the central component” of the right to keep and bear arms, the Second Amendment implicitly protects the right “to use arms in defense of hearth and home.”
It's interesting that R65s not looking toward her hero putins gun laws.
[Russians own more than 20 million guns, under permits for hunting and sport. Weapons with magazines that have more than ten cartridges or fire bursts of bullets are already outlawed. In order to be granted a permit, citizens must obtain a mental health certificate from a medical professional

Are you trying to say that a Semi-Auto Rifle is not 'Arms'?
If you *really* want to talk about what was absolutely alluded to - An individual had the full right to own every type of Weapon that was available to the Government - which would include Semi-Auto rifles and full autos.

I mean convicted Felons aside (as there is precedent that certain crimes have consequences past jail time, both at the time of the constitution and before) and those who aren't mentally competent (again, long history of precedent there) - I'm not sure who you mean.
But if it makes you happy - yes, I agree that several Federal laws infringe on that right...
And they should be scrapped.
Such as repealing the NFA.

Allow me to talk about the infamous comma.
See, this has long been a point of contention between liberal justices who seek to redefine the constitution (a position I disagree with) and the Originalist/Textualist position (which suffice to say I do agree with).
The comma was argued about at length - it's purpose is to ensure that the right of the people to keep and bear arms is what is to be protected, not the right of the Well regulated militia.
Then, if there's any doubt - we can refer to the Federalist papers to read explicitly what the intent of the founding fathers was when drafting it.
Don't try to play the "observance of precedent" Joker card. Already been Trump'd in the Roe v Wade reversal.
I've said elsewhere - but I'm very much on the RBG train here - Roe was a bad law from the start. The Dobbs decision was, according to the law and the constitution, absolutely correct. Hopefully the SCOTUS can undo just about every act of Judicial activism that has occurred in the last 70 years.
Then, if there are issues that need to be federally protected (like being able to access contraception as an unmarried person) - then, they can actually do things properly and get an amendment to the constitution.
Every Goddam' Bubba with a gun, needs to rock up for weekly militia exercises, to prepare to defend the union from the imminent Xi'na threat!
An amusing thought, but no - the right to self-defense is not predicated on any requirement from the individual (that's why it's a right, not a privilege).

WAS or IS available to the Government (at the time the amendment was written)? If "Was" then yes, you can own a black powder muzzle loader or perhaps a cannon. If "Is", them every individual should have a nuke if they want to.

Both.
Now, to be clear - I'm not advocating for everyone having a Nuke if they wanted it.
But I am saying that this would be in-line with 2A, as written.
I've seen some arguments that the projection of strategic power (which is what a Nuclear weapon is) falls outside of 2A - but there is a lot of grey area in that argument.

It meant every able bodied adult.

No, it doesn't.
And again - I get to point to the repeated SCOTUS rulings on this, the Federalist papers etc.
Like it or not, my interpretation is correct. It's correct because it's also the SCOTUS' interpretation.
The Comma clearly separates the two statements. The right to keep and bear arms belongs to the People, Not the Well Regulated Militia, not the National Guard - The People. The same 'We The People' that the US Constitution references in it's opening statement.
If the US wants to change it's gun laws at the federal level, then it must change 2A - but as per Husa - there's 60+% opposition to this.

That will work well, for the second amendment! Takes things back to US v Miller, 1939
The Supreme Court’s most thorough consideration of the Second Amendment in the twentieth century came in United States v. Miller, a 1939 decision that seemed to tie the Second Amendment right "to keep and bear arms" to militia use. Miller involved a federal statute, the National Firearms Act, which required registration of short-barreled shotguns, among other things. After reciting the original provisions of the Constitution dealing with the militia, the Miller Court observed that "[w]ith obvious purpose to assure the continuation and render possible the effectiveness of such forces the declaration and guarantee of the Second Amendment were made. It must be interpreted with that end in view."The significance of the militia, the Court continued, was that it was composed of "civilians primarily, soldiers on occasion." It was upon this force that the states could rely for defense and securing of the laws, on a force that "comprised all males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defense," who, "when called for service . . . were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time."

Defense of the State...nothing about the later "Personal Self Defence" interpretations. (A cut-off shotgun is great for personal self defense)

I consider the NFA to be unconstitutional for reference.
However, what is interesting is you gloss over one of the key aspects of the decision...
"The Second Amendment protects only the ownership of military-type weapons appropriate for use in an organized militia."
Now - to be clear, I disagree with parts of the Miller decision - most notably that short-barrelled shotguns, AKA Trench Brooms were in use by the Military (and still are as breaching shotguns).
However, if you want a strict interpretation of the Miller decision - this line:
"when called for service . . . were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time."
Means Assault Rifles (actual, select-fire, full-auto Assault Rifles) for everyone. It also means LMGs, Grenade Launchers etc.
So, do you want the Miller decision to be strictly applied?
Defense of the State...nothing about the later "Personal Self Defence" interpretations. (A cut-off shotgun is great for personal self defense)
Except we have the Federalist papers.
"If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defence, which is paramount to all positive forms of government; and which, against the usurpations of the national rulers, may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success, than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons entrusted with supreme power became usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions or districts, of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defence. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair. "
We also have Magna Carta, cited in the Heller decision:
“The right of the whole people, old and young, men, women and boys, and not militia only, to keep and bear arms of every description, and not such merely as are used by the militia, shall not be infringed, curtailed, or broken in upon, in the smallest degree; and all this for the important end to be attained: the rearing up and qualifying a well-regulated militia, so vitally necessary to the security of a free State. Our opinion is, that any law, State or Federal, is repugnant to the Constitution, and void, which contravenes this right, originally belonging to our forefathers, trampled under foot by Charles I. and his two wicked sons and successors, re-established by the revolution of 1688, conveyed to this land of liberty by the colonists, and finally incorporated conspicuously in our own Magna Charta!”

That's one view.
My view is that we are starting to see the pendulum swing back the other way and certain people are salty that their usurped institutional power is being taken away. There has been a long march by certain groups that share a common ideology and now that the rest of the people are seeing the results of these ideas, they are opposing it.

Hard to understand why you still live here and not the US. You hate the NZ government, the economy and its effect of your mortgage, the mostly mainstream acceptance of gay rights and of course the gun laws here. You could move to the US and everything would be fine in your world. Move to the right location and you'd probably get away with shooting gays who had the temerity to knock on your door. The fact that your kids might get killed in a school shooting would have to be an acceptable price to pay for the freedoms you continually espouse.

I don't hate the acceptance of Gay Rights - far from it. Between 2 (or more) consenting adults, I don't give a flying fuck what you get up to. You leave me alone to fuck who and how I want to fuck and I'll leave you alone.
What I object to is pushing radical Gender Ideology as if it's the norm. The statement that a Man, magically becomes a Women on their mere say-so. I object to people who have outright declared their intention to do so pushing Gender and sexuality into arenas it has no place being.
I object to this radical ideology being taught to impressionable children who then grow up confused, opt to mutilate themselves by cutting off bits of themselves and making themselves permanently sterile, only to realize that in 70% of cases, they weren't Trans at all, they were just Autistic and Gay.
Trying to conflate the two is a strawman at best and outright dishonest at worst.
If it weren't for Family (not just the immediate one), I would have moved to the US. I've stated that very plainly. But we don't all live our lives purely for ourselves.
That said, with the rise of ACT, it might (and I'm being an eternal optimist here) bring back a little desperately needed balance and undo some of Labour's more egregious and destructive policies - and then NZ might return to the Paradise it was before Labour fucked it all up. A Paradise, which for the most part, wasn't too bad.
We'll see.

He later found a job at another local company on some sort of work scheme from whoever did the dole then.
When he applied for another job the potential new employer rung up his then current employer who simply and aptly described him as a "Oxygen thief." hilariously in spite of the very honest and accurate appraisal, he actually still got the new job.

Literally at the eleventh hour Trump's lawyers filed a motion to indefinitely delay the documents case until after the election. The plan is presumably that Trump having won the election he can then instruct the DoJ to drop the case.
People have been wondering what unusual moves Trump's pet judge Aileen Cannon would make to protect Trump. She is beginning to answer the questions. The case was prosecuted in the southern district of Florida because of "venue". That's where the documents were held illegally. That as opposed to holding the trial in DC, the place the documents were removed from. In the light of that it is interesting that the judge has just moved the trial to a different part of Florida. A part of Florida where the majority of people are Trump voters.
We await the DoJ response to these developments..

Because Trump was president at the time of the original case he had claimed that if he had committed slander against Ms Carroll it had been in the course of his duties as president. His AG, Bill Barr, had instructed the DoJ to defend the case on that basis. Now that the DoJ has withdrawn, Trump loses any immunity he had as president and the ongoing case is entirely at his expense.

Whatever, it does seem to raise the possibility that Trump is to face charges under the Insurrection Act. If found guilty he would be banned from running for any public office.
They are being too nice to Trump, he should at least be under house arrest. Reality Winner who leaked one document confirming Russian interference in the 2016 election was locked up immediately there was enough evidence and not released until near the end of her five year sentence. Teixeira the Air Guardsman who leaked secret documents online was arrested by armed presonnel in full tactical kit and taken away in an armoured personnel carrier and remains incarcerated awaiting trial. Trump, who is suspected of far worse, is still free to fly around spreading his dangerous lunacy.

It has been like waiting for the other shoe to drop but it seems we are getting there. Trump received a "target letter" from the FBI in respect of the insurrection of Jan 6. Target letters are a courtesy, not everybody gets one. The target letter advises the recipient of likely charges and invites them to appear before the Grand Jury. Trump did not avail himself of the opportunity to appear.
Trump's legal team has just met with the Special Counsel. Previously that led to an indictment very shortly thereafter. Here's hoping.

Trump hit with new charges in classified documents case, third defendant added...
Donald Trump was hit with new criminal charges in addition to the ones he already faced related to his retaining classified documents at his Florida residence after leaving the White House.
Trump is accused in a new superseding indictment with his valet, Walt Nauta, of an attempt to delete video surveillance footage at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida during the summer of 2022.
A third defendant, Mar-a-Lago maintenance chief Carlos de Oliveira, was added to the case in federal court.

A third defendant, Mar-a-Lago maintenance chief Carlos de Oliveira, was added to the case in federal court.
The new charges against Trump include an additional count of willful retention of national defense information and two new counts of obstruction against both him and Nauta.
With the new charges, Trump now faces 40 criminal counts in the case, which was first lodged in early June by Department of Justice special counsel Jack Smith.
De Oliveira, 56, was charged Thursday with conspiracy to obstruct justice, altering destroying, mutilating a document, and false statements.
The false statements charge relates to the voluntary interview De Oliveira gave FBI agents in January.

And the last arraignment, Smith intently stared at trump the whole time, and not once did coward trump meet his gaze.
For now, trump will get yet another polling bump among the maga morons. Meatball Ron must be so over this shit helping trump lol
The GOP will keep desperately framing it as a Jack Smith deranged witch hunt against the right, conveniently forgetting Smith has successfully prosecuted high ranking democrats in the past.
And to that end, expect a ramping up of the Hunter Biden rubbish by the GOP. Just yesterday they had the big meeting with hunters business partner. The GOP are trying to suppress the transcripts so they can control the narrative, while the one democrat that was in attendance was calling for the transcript to be released in it's entirety. That alone tells one all they need to know - it was yet another gop fueled nothing burger.
Eventually a lot of these magas are finally going to realize that they in fact do belong to a cult.
The conservative movement in the USA has been completely gutted by trump, and that is actually a shame. We await the first hysterical attack 3 2 1...
Afterthought:
This morning I heard some comments about this judge's record. She has consistently been dishing out some of the longest sentences to Jan 6 insurrectionists. Nineteen times she has awarded sentences at, or longer, than what the prosecution asked for. She commented on the irony of the crowd shouting USA USA while they tried to overthrow the lawfully elected government. She has made a number of other similar statements all of which bring me joy.
So Trump has asked Congress to impeach Biden. What for he didn't say. Their hearings, despite all their announcements about whistleblowers who turned out not to be whistle blowers, and smoking guns which weren't, have produced nothing.

Reading the indictment is interesting. It doesn't leave Trump many defence options. It seems the most likely defence will be "Eastman made me do it."
Republicans complain the whole thing is a Democrat stitch up. The evidence though is all from Republicans some of whom adhered to their oath of office rather than Trump's requests.
For me the most impressive quote is from a Republican operative who was complaining about a lack of evidence for Trump's claims. All he had was, "conspiracy shit beamed down from the motor ship."
Co conspirator 1 is Rudy Giuliani
Co conspirator 2 is Eastman who devised the whole plan re fake electors and Pence not certifying the votes.

Interesting. At his most recent hearing the judge gave Trump detailed rules about communicating or attempting to communicate with witnesses. He was warned a breach would result in his being locked up. There are some 86 witnesses in this latest case apparently.
Trump was warned specifically not to communicate, attempt to intimidate, influence, threaten, bribe, or retaliate against any witness. After due consideration Trump has responded by posting the following message on his Troth Senshul. All caps...
"IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU!"
Whether or not that resembles an attempt to influence, intimidate, or is a threat to retaliate, is up to the judge. It's way past time somebody gave Trump a serious slap.

Not an informed opinion from me...But, it seems that the Disqualification is AUTOMATIC! Congress may only remove the disqualification (disability) with a 2/3 majority, in each house!
Trump has certainly "given comfort" to persons convicted of seditious conspiracy including collaborating in a song with convicted felons and promising them pardons.
Unfortunately the dodgy SCOTUS can probably rule that a seditious conspiracy is not an 'actual' insurrection...but it definitely was a rebellion!.

In addition to the names we already knew there is the strange case of the woman who met with Ruby Freeman in a police station. Ruby Freeman is one of the election workers who was accused of mishandling votes, and of passing USB sticks which were in fact lollies. Subsequently she and her daughter had to move house because of death threats. At the meeting the woman acted as if she was a friend and was advising Freeman that it would be best if she admitted to fraud. That woman is one of the nineteen.
There is a whole group of people we hadn't previously heard of who illegally entered the State election offices and copied the hard drives of the voting machines in their search for evidence of fraud. The charges relating to computer crime result from that event.

It's possible Trump is playing four dimensional chess. Either that or he really is an idiot. Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, two members of his "elite strike force" that lost sixty odd court cases, are complaining that he will not cover their legal fees. It's not even as if it's his money, he's using one or other of his PACs. Presumably one that is not currently under investigation for fraud. Giuliani has property for sale to raise money to cover some his legal expenses.
These legal actions are expensive. One guy that was involved in a case, as a witness, had to pay $300,000 in legal fees. The likes of Giuliani and Ellis are not witnesses they are defendants. If Trump doesn't make money available they will be under huge pressure to flip and give evidence against him. And Giuliani knows where all the bodies are buried.
I liked Michael Cohens comment. There are three people you don't stiff: your lawyer, your doctor, and your mechanic. Otherwise when you get to the bottom of the hill you may have no brakes.

That is very likely. Apparently Giuliani already owes about a million in legal fees and Trump is refusing to cover his costs. Trump reportedly told a number of people he would support them but it seems the support is not forthcoming. Trump's own mammoth legal fees are still being paid by small donors. Odd for a 'billionaire' but...
Giuliani needs to do some serious thinking as do some of the others. Jenna Ellis has a Go Fund Me type thing going. She is seeking half a million, last I saw she had $5,000 odd. It seems none of the nineteen defendants in the Georgia case are working together. Trump and a couple of the others are trying to move their cases to a Federal court. Basically that would move the case to another courthouse, not much else would change but they might get a more sympathetic jury. Trump's standard ploy is delay delay delay. Mr Chesebro though has requested an early trial under Georgia's speedy trial laws. Perhaps he was trying to embarrass the DA? If so it didn't work, she has set a trial date for late October, just two months away.

It would seem that Trump is forcing them to go to the DA and seek a deal. They'd best be quick, first to flip gets the best deal.
$5 says the first to roll is Guiliani. if he gets bail he might have to hitchhike home because the jet might not be available. He might have to do witpro.
He should find a garden centre and have a press conference. That was peak Rudy.

Some good points there. We forget how things work in bigger countries, it’s prob not that expensive compared to what we would pay here in a smaller market.
A British chap I follow who runs a small to medium size construction outfit recently took private helicopter charter to see some new trucks for sale. His time is valuable and it saved a four hour each way road trip.
Plus it might have been headed that way for a service or another client.
Just like knowing people in trucking you can get things moved free or on the cheap saving $$$$
In HB I’ve certainly noticed an uptick in small private jets and choppers as our population grows and more movers and shakers settle here despite the economic damage our young country is naturally growing fast.

Rudy Giuliani has had a bad day in the Freeman/Moss trial. He had consistently refused to hand over his financial records to the court offering a whole range of what he must have thought were creative excuses. He also pleaded "no contest" to the charges then went on every talk show that would have him and said he hadn't pleaded guilty. The judge has had enough. She has found him guilty. She is also annoyed that he hasn't paid Freeman/Moss's lawyers expenses as ordered.
The next court date will be around the end of the year when a jury will meet to decide damages. The judge says she will instruct the jury that Giuliani has been trying to deceive the court as to his worth in an attempt to lower any penalty. That alone should put the price up. He really may end up bankrupt.

The judge will decide the penalties. There is no jury in this case because Trump's genius legal team failed to file the application for a jury trial within the given time frame.

Apparently that's not something that can be appealed. That makes sense because an appeal can't be based on evidence that has already been heard. The appeal should be based on new evidence, or points of law, eg something the judge did wrong. A tick in the wrong box would be a new one. Incompetent representation is apparently not an option in a civil action.
Chris Kise, he who demanded three million up front to work for Trump, is regarded as a serious lawyer. The rest are pretty much a clown show. Trump's plan is probably to appeal everything to the Supreme Court. When that three million runs out though he'll need a good lawyer and he may be short of cash.

Today brings yet more news of failed Trump legal actions. Trump had taken an action against his former lawyer and "fixer" Michael Cohen for $500,000. Cohen had appeared for his deposition and done whatever else he was required to do. Trump had failed to attend a whole series of appointments and the judge had given him one last date: the ninth of October. Trump's lawyers have advised the court that they are withdrawing the action. Michael Cohen will now be filing for massive sanctions against Trump.
In what commentators thought a bizarre legal move, Trump had filed an action against the judge in his NY civil fraud case. That too is now withdrawn. Suing a judge who is deciding what penalties you will face is not normally considered a wise move.
Alena Hubba one of Trump's legal team in the NY case went on TV and said that day four was a good day for Trump. The judge has already found Trump guilty, that was last week. The case is now about determining what the penalties will be.

Former professor John Eastman, one of the architects of Trump's coup attempt. Allegedly. With Trump he is one of the accused in the Georgia electoral fraud case.

For once Trump is not wrong. In The Hague facing charges of crimes against humanity is where Netanyahu should be. The US will probably prevent that though, and not just because the US is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court.

Trump generally doesn't attract the best lawyers. Not surprising really, most lawyers expect to get paid.
Trump said he was going to appeal his gag order and in fact he has. His lawyer has now received a reply from the court advising him that he is not a member of the bar in that district and he can't practice law there. They also advised him where he could get information as to the documentation and fees required to apply for membership.
That seems a basic error?

Sidney Powell pleaded guilty to election interference in Georgia's criminal case last week.
On social media, she has continued to push claims that the 2020 election was rigged and prosecutors target conservatives.
Her organization's newsletter urged her followers to read an article arguing the DA "extorted a guilty plea from Powell."
Hopefully there's a jail cell ready and waiting for her.

You know, you spell us right? You spell us U-S. I just picked that up. Has anyone ever thought of that? A couple of days [ago) I’m reading and it said us. And I said, you know, if you think about it, us equals U-S.
Now if we say something genius, they’ll never say it, you know, we get 25, 30, 40, 50, 80,000, 100,000 people to the speeches. They’ve never said Trump’s a great speaker. I’ve never heard it… I said to my people, do you think they’ll ever acknowledge [it]… I must be doing okay. Except I’m a very handsome person. This week another Trump trial kicks off in Colorado. This trial involves Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. Briefly, any office holder who has sworn to "support the Constitution" and thereafter indulges in insurrection will be banned from holding any future public office.
Trump will not appear, his defence so far is that he did not take an oath to support the Constitution. He took an oath to defend it.
The outcome will not affect his ability to run for office in other states, this relates specifically to Colorado. Unless other states initiate their own proceedings?

There are two trials to watch here. Colorado and one other are well funded and not likely to cease until it gets to the Supreme Court.
If it is decided at that level he can't stand then it becomes something applicable to all states.
Until then he can certainly run in the Primaries.
It'd have to be 50/50 as to whether the Republicans would actually nominate him as the Presidential candidate. There's a lot of shuffling going on in the background.

I missed this ruling in the civil case prior to the trial starting.
A New York judge ruled on Tuesday that Donald J. Trump persistently committed fraud by inflating the value of his assets, and stripped the former president of control over some of his signature New York properties.
Ms. James has argued that Mr. Trump inflated the value of his properties by as much as $2.2 billion and is seeking a penalty of about $250 million in a trial scheduled to begin as early as Monday.
Justice Engoron wrote that the annual financial statements that Mr. Trump submitted to banks and insurance companies “clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business.”
While the trial will determine the size of the penalty, Justice Engoron’s ruling granted one of the biggest punishments Ms. James sought: the cancellation of business certificates that allow some of Mr. Trump’s New York properties to operate, a move that could have major repercussions for the Trump family business.

In a right wing media vacuum is where they get it. Right from the outset, trump set this eco system up with his fake news mantra. All these saps look at is fox news, or even right of that like newsmax for their news. Most magas still think this trial is to see if he is guilty, not that he has already been found guilty and this is just to work out damages. They also think trump was denied a jury as fox and newsmax have never explained even once that trumps incompetent lawyer failed to tick the box on the very basic form to request one. This will become the first civil war born of greed for advertising revenue.
Both the left and right media do "forget" to report on news inconvenient to their political ideologies followed. However the right leaning ones would do it twofold over the left leaning media outlets from my basic observations.

Something I was wondering about during Guliani's case: There are still huge defamation actions coming from Dominion Voting Machines and from Smartmatic as well as an action from Hunter Biden. They will all realise that the cupboard is bare but could still be seeking a retraction as part of a settlement. Although Giuliani did himself no favours by repeating his defamation outside the courthouse while the jury were inside listening to arguments about how big the penalties should be.
If he continues the non compliance that he demonstrated during disclosure in this recent case, jail is not out of the question.
