In some cases the maximum feasible long term population density is fuck all.
Like Montana. Even low density cattle ranches and fairly widely scattered towns weren't viable after the high country forests were milled and the mining fukd the water table. And then you get a sort of industrial scale in-fill lifestyle block development...
Jared Diamond's book "Collapse" covered it well.
Compared to almost all continental environments NZ has no resource issues whatsoever.

As reported by Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge, the Russian response to the extra-legal ruling of a corrupt court in the Netherlands, which had no jurisdiction over the case on which it ruled, awarding $50 billion dollars from the Russian government to shareholders of Yukos, a corrupt entity that was looting Russia and evading taxes, is telling. Asked what Russia would do about the ruling, an advisor to President Putin replied, “There is a war coming in Europe.” Do you really think this ruling matters?”

http://www.aljazeera.com/video/middleeast/2014/07/gaza-miracle-baby-dies-after-six-days-201473113345982958.html
http://www.preventgenocide.org/genocide/officialtext.htm
It is a crime to plan or incite genocide, even before killing starts, and to aid or abet genocide: Criminal acts include conspiracy, direct and public incitement, attempts to commit genocide, and complicity in genocide.
Punishable Acts The following are genocidal acts when committed as part of a policy to destroy a group’s existence:
Killing members of the group includes direct killing and actions causing death.
Causing serious bodily or mental harm includes inflicting trauma on members of the group through widespread torture, rape, sexual violence, forced or coerced use of drugs, and mutilation.
Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to destroy a group includes the deliberate deprivation of resources needed for the group’s physical survival, such as clean water, food, clothing, shelter or medical services. Deprivation of the means to sustain life can be imposed through confiscation of harvests, blockade of foodstuffs, detention in camps, forcible relocation or expulsion into deserts.
Prevention of births includes involuntary sterilization, forced abortion, prohibition of marriage, and long-term separation of men and women intended to prevent procreation.
Forcible transfer of children may be imposed by direct force or by fear of violence, duress, detention, psychological oppression or other methods of coercion. The Convention on the Rights of the Child defines children as persons under the age of 18 years.
Genocidal acts need not kill or cause the death of members of a group. Causing serious bodily or mental harm, prevention of births and transfer of children are acts of genocide when committed as part of a policy to destroy a group’s existence.
The law protects four groups - national, ethnical, racial or religious groups.
A national group means a set of individuals whose identity is defined by a common country of nationality or national origin.
An ethnical group is a set of individuals whose identity is defined by common cultural traditions, language or heritage.
A racial group means a set of individuals whose identity is defined by physical characteristics.
A religious group is a set of individuals whose identity is defined by common religious creeds, beliefs, doctrines, practices, or rituals.
Key Terms
The crime of genocide has two elements: intent and action. “Intentional” means purposeful. Intent can be proven directly from statements or orders. But more often, it must be inferred from a systematic pattern of coordinated acts.
Intent is different from motive. Whatever may be the motive for the crime (land expropriation, national security, territorrial integrity, etc.), if the perpetrators commit acts intended to destroy a group, even part of a group, it is genocide.
The phrase "in whole or in part" is important.
Perpetrators need not intend to destroy the entire group. Destruction of only part of a group (such as its educated members, or members living in one region) is also genocide. Most authorities require intent to destroy a substantial number of group members – mass murder. But an individual criminal may be guilty of genocide even if he kills only one person, so long as he knew he was participating in a larger plan to destroy the group.

Preoccupied? As you say it's all happening at once and we can't, supposedly, do anything about it. It's almost as though every single situation is coordinated to keep another truth down, like running out of oil or some such other irrelevant concern.
On the upside two "primitive" tribes recently met and swapped bananas. From different cultures but poignant that one tribe has been displaced by man and his never ending search for wood and the other tribe has greeted them without slitting their throats or putting voodoo spells on them. Dipshit translation: Amazonian tribe band together to drive the world back into the 12th century.

Nah not fashionable - sadly its the fact that we know more (and understand less, as it commonly found with knowing more).
As for the perspective. I'm positive enough living in the now. Life is good and will continue to be good. My only concern is the future generations..........and how badly I have fucked them by enjoying now so much.
As for that link. I call bullshit on a few of those. It doesn't change my perspective, as I mentioned I am positive for what I have right now. But its very easy to say life is better because we don't need kerosene lamps.......... but we also spend about 30% less time with out kids due to having increased ability to work. So swings and roundabouts.
When I see people needing to sign up for 40 year mortgages to buy a house......I wonder if the grass really is greener, or the people who say that had life changes up while others went down.

Wrong, more knowledge does not equate to understanding less.
And no, that tiresome wee rant would not have been positive from a destitute third-world subsistence farmer, from a member of the world's top 5% income earners it's obscene.
You're correct about future generations, first world, they'll fuck it up because they've been stupidly sheltered from the consequences of their behaviour. Bad parenting.
Kerosene lamps is what you got from that article? What about the extra decade of life? What about the 400% reduction in infant mortality? Avgas must try harder with comprehension.
Not greener? What fucking planet are you on? NZ houses cost twice what they did a generation ago because they're more than twice the size and full of expensive shit your granddad couldn't have afforded even if it were available then.
If you regret you haven't done more with what chances you've had then I can only suggest that you've got more to come yet. I also suggest you could probably spend some of it to good effect by enumerating the benefits you enjoy compared to every other human ever to have walked the earth under your feet. Israel is a nation of peace --- that is absolutely true!
Yes, they are determined to destroy the Palestinians ... peace by peace by peace by peace! (check out the maps in the post #2801 above)
Don't quote me on this just watch them do it with your own eyes in our most enlightened time in history when every one in the world knows better than that!
They suffered under Nazi Germany and have been telling the world to feel guilty about that and to never ever let it happen again! :spanking:
But guess what? here it is happening again right under our very noses and guess who is doing it this time? ... Israel ... YES! ... Israel!
"Why" does not matter to me, I have no quarrel about "why" nor do I even judge them on why!
It is simply that they are doing to others what they "screamed blue murder about" when it was being done to them ... and ever since! :nono:
The world should demand that they stop! "NOW"! ... But be prepared to be deafend by the silence ... unfortunately the world gives it's approval by it's silence!

My Palestinian friends were quite vocal about their hatred towards Israel. But even they said that if the previous UN plans were put in place, they would live peacefully with Israel.
So I guess you know when your beat, and sometimes survival is better than fighting for the risk of having more land or death.

Obviously it's not Putin because he is pissing them off and they are trying to discredit him for threatening their plans!
So have a look at who Putin is pissing off.

Obama says yes master who do you want me to kick to take the worlds attention away from "other" attrocities and at the same time make it look as I am the man?
Whoa hey there is that Putin guy who is thumbing his nose and a few rowdy Arabs who need a good kicking so I will go make a noise over there! :corn:
So he put in his thumb and pulled out a plumb and said ... "what a good boy am I"! ... (Meanwhile relatively unarmed people are being slaughtered in Gaza and he doesn't notice!)

It's funny when you sit in the middle between creationist and evolution and tell everyone they are completely independent of each other. You get called nuts.
Yet if evolution was 100% true - wouldn't we have run out of chimps a few thousand years ago?
Many people have not actually read Darwin's texts either - Darwin clearly states that evolution does not go back to the dawn of time, just he summarized the last 5-10,000 years. The rest he honestly said "I do no know". He completely avoided the historical age of a crocodile or frog - on purpose. His study was how animals had changed from a core set of creatures.
Poor guys must be turning in his grave after what people did by misinterpreting his writings.

Talk about rose tinted spectacles. It's reliable "in spite of" not "because of" renewable energy. The whole grid is buckling at the knees because of renewable energy and it's staggeringly expensive energy to boot. It's insane.

Banging 20 yr olds is like shooting fish in a barrel
America asked japan which is a pacifist country to buy more guns
China . According to the japanese are a bunch of dishonest poisoners
Schoolgirls still dress in sailor uniforms but their pantys are harder to find in vending machines
Unlike beer and ciggies which are available in vending machines everywhere even soft drink vending machines have beer
I get 50 000 yen a month from the government because 2 condoms had a hole in them with the obvious results
Shaggin a virgin is still not a suprise
The price of motorbikes are still high due to those damn ruskies buying at bds
And thanks to global warming and 50 billion air conditioning machines outside is a place few venture
Mr Abes hands are tiedcause there are too many old people and no want stuff....
If the debt repayment gets to 4 percent we are screwed in a spiralistic germany in 33 kinda way which will be nothin compared to this mess

On an unrelated note did you hear that the smelly hippies in Germany had turned off all their nuclear power plants after Fukushima? Presumably because they don't have massive earthquakes and tsunamis in Germany very often... but you can never be too carefull eh?

So the farmer fucks up and fucks up and fucks up... and it's the guy who sold him the seeds? Did you ever read the limits of liability on a packet of seeds? It amounts to the price of the seeds... and only then if they're not true to type.

I have never saved my seeds from one season to the next... not for a commercial crop. Why in Gods name would you introduce a risk like that from the get go? There's people who already do that stuff... and a lot better than I can. Like Monsanto. If you save your own seeds you'll get carryover of diseases and viruses that will impact randomly from one season to the next. It can be done but it's subsistence agriculture... who the fuck wants to do that.

"Outgoing UN rights chief rebukes UN Security Council
Navi Pilay, the outgoing UN rights chief, has rebuked the UN Security Council for failing to stop intolerable human suffering and serious breaches of global peace and security and accused it of putting short-term geopolitical concerns and narrow national interests first. She said crises in Syria, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Gaza Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Ukraine are all examples of the international community’s failure to prevent conflict. She suggested the UN should come up with a new response to rights violations, such as rapid, flexible human rights monitoring missions. She also recommended introducing a UN Arms Trade Treaty to try and regulate the $85 billion a year industry and keep weapons out of the hands of rights abusers and criminals."

not only did I read it , but I found out WHO wrote it ...
You have used an article supporting Monsanto , written by a group who "claim" to be independent , in fact on the international food policys web site , they proudly say how independent they are
Funded, by ....Monsanto and every other big agi business
Kinda like the Labour party writing a press release for the national party ......
As for subsistance farming , and a big mess .....Um.... No I wouldnt be dead in a fortnight , as even my my little 5x10 m plot produces enough for my family ...Have so much in fact I swap with the neighbours ...
One wonders how I can get soooo much from such a small space .......I even have enough to make wine and Potieen .... It even supports fish ......
I was told that you could grow Lemons here in Tokyo ....well the tree obviously didnt listen ,
One wonders how ....This nature stuff seems to work .....
So to tidy up the 2 points, for thousands and thousands of years , we did really badly food wise and since Mr Tull and his new fangled invention we have been doing really well........
I call bullshyt
Years ago there was a TV or radio programe in Australia, where some smelly hippies and a main stream famer were gives some land and challenged to grow cotton
the hippies lost, the main stream farmer produced more and made more of a profit .....
No problems here ......except
it was a monoculture, The Hippies failed or werent allowed to explore the other 7 revenue streams that could have been grow as well as the cotton.....
So next time ya down ya big lettuce patch and ya see a bee or healthy insect life , , then ya can say Im wrong ,
BUT if ya dont see a bee or healty insect life ......Im right and in this case ....I would like to be wrong
Sadly ,,,,,,,Im probably not

I found all of those truly fascinating, thanks. Particularly the longer British permaculture one.
My favourite bit was " Farmers drool and gardeners rule"... something I've always held to be true.
The worst bit was Mr Jeremy Legett Executive Chairman of Solarcentury confidently predicting in 2009 that "by 2013 , at the latest, we will be facing not just an oil crisis but an energy famine". Personally I think useless cunts like this should simply be dragged out and publicly executed. Harsh perhaps but if we start thinning these fuckers out now future commentators might like to anchor their opinions more closely with the real world and less with what they're trying to sell.
If we all start swinging from the trees, charming though it looks, how do we terraform Mars? How do we sustain a technological society. What's the point of this idyllic "sustainable" lifestyle if we're just sitting on our chuffs waiting for the next big asteroid?
I actually bought, what must have been, one of the very first Permaculture textbooks when I was at university. Probably 1980. When I was studying my lecturers confidently predicted that organics was the next big thing. Still waiting. Though I can swing both ways.

Take a look at where we are and ask why? A guy was interested in electricity, another in telephone, another in cars, another in spaceships etc... and they built the lot. We are here because of human innovation. I don't see that changing because we decided to go sustainable. In fact pushing towards sustainability to encourage some spectacular technological advances I reckon. No doubt many will chuff sit, but hey, they do it at the moment, why stress over their non participation and stifle development by pouring money into subsidising their existence.

So - the US reserves the right to invade The Netherlands.........didn't see this in the news.......
......It was not long, however, before the public mood in Europe began to turn. A pivotal factor was openly voiced U.S. threats in a law that had been passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate of the U.S. Congress that could eventually result in an invasion of the Netherlands by United States army forces. http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/internationales-strafgericht-us-kongress-droht-niederlanden-mit-invasion-a-200430.html
(http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/internationales-strafgericht-us-kongress-droht-niederlanden-mit-invasion-a-200430.html)
When this was learned outrage was expressed not only within the Dutch government, but also among the population of the country. According to the law, if it should ever happen that American citizens are brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and accused at The Hague, Washington would exercise the preemptive right to invade the country in order to prevent prosecution.
Remember that Malaysia’s government had permitted a tribunal in 2011, whose judges in the tradition of British court proceedings condemned both George W. Bush and Tony Blair as war criminals. http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2011/11/20111128105712109215.html
Some Europeans are asking if there could be a connection between the ruling of this tribunal and the loss of two Malaysian airliners.

The example used: "Abstract: In this paper, we address the often contentious debate over state and local recycling policy by carefully estimating the social net benefit of curbside recycling. Benefits are estimated using household survey data from over 4,000 households across 40 western U.S. cities" :shit: and then a decision is made on the social benefits of curbside recycling for the entire country? There won't be a revolution. All the great minds will simply disappear.
Last country to have a revolution and succeed was Ukraine.......look where they are now?
The world is watching and learning that there is no point fighting the government - now you simply plan your exit from them and leave them.
25% of NZ understands this - If you include the ones who begrudgingly voted.....I estimate that 50% of NZ doesn't care anymore. That figure could be much higher.
In the US the figures are about the same.
The only way a revolution will happen in a 1st world, is if that 50% of the population gets backed into a corner. This will never happen.
We have the perception of freedom and that is enough for most.

WTF have you guys been smoking?
You can argue tree huggy fear mongering all you like, but their are environmental issues that need to be addressed for future generations. Mental? Nah.
