Was thinking about this fast/slow group thing.

Maybe we could have a fast group, a medium group, and a slow group.
But also a slow/med, med/med, med/fast, but to cover all bases, maybe a slow, slow/med, slow, med, med/, med, med, fast/, fast, fast, ultrasonic/, then perhaps a slow, slow, slow, slow/, slow, slow, slow, med/ med, med, med, fast/, fast, fast, ultrasonic, ultrasonic.
Then maybe a group that are so fast they have arrived at the destination and are back home before the rest have left.
They can be the mega ballistic group.

Then we'd have a place for all!!!

Ok, sorted.

As you were.:msn-wink::wacko::niceone:

The Group Ride Guide

Group rides. Many like minded individuals meet up to share their passion for sport, ride some excellent roads, enjoy the company of old and meet new friends and talk shit. Unfortunately, all too often however these excursions are marred by an accident – or worse, we lose a friend.
Make no mistake it is a dangerous game we play at the best of times, but there are some things particular to group rides that can catch out the unwary.

An approach was made to the wise and powerful Mental Trousers to try and find a way to bring together a group of folk from a broad spectrum of KB and see if we could reach a consensus on these factors and what could be done to mitigate them.

What follows is the fruit of those discussions. A set of guidelines which we hope, if adopted and followed will go some way toward reducing the risks associated with group rides and make them more enjoyable for all participants.

It is hoped that organisers will state that rides will be run in accordance with The Group Ride Guide and provide a link to this in their announcement and/or calendar event posts. It is anticipated that the guidelines can not cover every situation nor should all be applicable to every ride. But please, let people know what to expect so that they may make an informed decision as to whether they should attend the ride or not.

I won’t name names, I think MT has access to a list of all participants, and some, for various reasons wished to remain anonymous. As you know, trying to get consensus on any given topic from more than a couple of people can be difficult, so for my part I would like to thank everyone for their co-operation, time, effort, ideas and constructive input. Well done guys.

Cripes! I can see the sentiment behind this but rides are about having fun , not organisational skills and paperwork. We ride bikes to enjoy the freedom .
I actually enjoy riding my own ride , I am not a good group rider at all and sometimes that has me on my own but still able to enjoy the social aspect at the stops.
I definitely believe that a group that is well spread out is much safer than some over organised rides where one goes down and its like skittles .
Thats why I think the thursday ride group has lasted so many years despite the odd bit of attrition , its the lack of organisation that appeals and makes it easy.
I believe in personal responsibility , if someone out rides their ability then they can only look at themselves .

It makes a ride a epic to orginise aye dave, i havnt read it all properly, there is so much there. It sounds like it more for orginising a toy run or something big, not a casual saturday ride

Well said. I think Jase is right to. It is more for big groups. I don't want rules as such. The world is full of rules. Riding is to be free of the stuff that’s holds us all back at work for 5 days a week.

Dont the likes of Ulyssess etc have those types of rides where you have to obey the speed limit, no over taking, formation etc etc.

I saw a mass of black coming towards me a while back on HW50. Looked like a giant blowfly.
It was a group ride of compressors, gang, patches everywhere.
They were so tightly formed, if one went over or made a mistake I can imagine how many more would go too.

Yea no worries mate, just make yourself known, might try and pop out on saturday the 3rd, but probably not as will be helping out with the 6 hour, but sunday for sure, hopefully itll be sunny and will put the slicks on, but ill let you know either way.

The old man has a drz250 to play on, got a set of kx forks on for a better ride. He hasnt been off-road on my tractor as yet, he's a bit worried about the front wheel popping up on him all to quickly, or getting into trouble and then grabbing a hand full of power...

Haha Sounds awesome mate i'll definitely come and say gidday :)

Yes you can use it but you will not be able to carry Becks on the ride I had planned. Maybe you can take a group on an easier ride and I can take the harder ride? Or vice versa
Was going to go up the zig-zag in the George over the top down the blackberry face along the flat up the second to end face, far end via the far face, along the middle track , up the hill cross over the top of the George and down the woolshed side. Will that ride work for this group? But not really a pillion ride. You could lead the same ride but take an easier rout as not all might like the harder ride........?

we'll see how it goes when everyone there and what people are comfortable with, sounds like a good route planned to me:niceone: will see how it goes with Bex, can always like you say try an easier route if i need to... i wonder if Mary Moo needs a hand making muffins.....:dodge:

Not really 'rules' as such. Just an attempt to map out responsible expectations, especially on rides where lots turn up. Smaller groups, a few mates, and those where the riders have all ridden together lots so know their capabilities, obviously are less likely to need reminders of how to behave around others. Probably not something that would need to be put into action round these parts...

I like group rides no rules cos we are all grown up now go what speed you like not trying to out do anybody but trying to get some bleeding footage of other riders but I cant keep up  work it out

Just a note about the ride on tomorrow. If anyone wants to come then yell out. We are part of the slow slow slow slower group, not to be confused with the slow slow slow slower slower group. We will hit 101kph on at least 2 occasions!

Ypawa, let us know if you plan on having a ride with us so we know whether or not to meet up with you, otherwise we will just go to waipuk.

Would be them.

We had a shorter ride today, rained all HW50 down and was fine Palmy area.
Rained all way back from Dannevirke, (surprise!)
Were going to go Weber/Wimbeldon/Porangahau way back but was pissing down at the turnoff in Dannevirke so pointless trying to do country roads in our 101 kph style so high tailed it home.

Alvin & I even caught and passed a mufti cop car and never got pinged so that proves we never speed.

Have they made one of them a demo yet?

I would say so as the black one is reg & WOF. A silver one unreg.

I sat on it for a while and pondered.
Hmm....if I buy one I would have to take the missus out on it.
Think I'll stick to sprotsbikes.:2thumbsup

But it is very nice, and could make a man turn.
Well, not faggy, but........the 'cruiser' side.

Even a few compressor pilots there were in awe of it, commenting on how nice it was and nothing really to buy for it cept maybe mufflers whereas their pressors they had to fork out shitloads to get them to look, go, and sound nice in their opinion.
And at 25k its the same price for an entry level Dyna.

Anza are having a Harley day shortly where there will be 18 pressors to demo, which is quite depressing but, on the plus.........the Buell range will be there too, including the 1125 Rotax ones, plus the usual XB12s etc. I think I will go for a ride on them.

It didnt lol. Went in wednesday morning to buy one and they were out of stock, so ordered and paid. Was told come in before 4 today to pick it up. Came in at 3.50 and they bloody closed at 3.45. So havent got it yet.

Other hand, Yanis whipped his out, with a warm tyre (not cold, but not fully heated) it was showing 38 on the rear and 37 on the front. So looks like front maybe a little over pressure, but im going to wait until ive got my digital gauge before i start changing any thing

K a few rules for Sunday. Sorry but we need just a few

NO DOGS AT ALL. Just don’t bring the K9 or you will have to take him/her home.

Quiet is good if you have a choice. We have a lota young stock on the ground. But bring what you have and ride it.

You make the call about what you want to ride. Too hard don’t do it. I will ride an easy rout and will point out the harder option for you and it is your choice what you ride.

Safety gear is your responsibility. Remember this is our work place so treat it as such.

Have a great day and go home worn out and not broken.

Far out I shouldn't be here some dick in a cage tried to run me off the road when I was overtaking him south of Dannevirke. He must have been watching me in his rear veiw mirror and as I overtook him he followed me over to the otherside of road just about got on to the verge and I would have bin history.
Apart from that Whooo what a ride back from Wangas stoped in Palmy and had a look at an XJR 1300, nice comfy bike

Yeah G, we had a wanker in a Holden pull up right behind us just before HW50 turnoff on the way back this week, after we passed him. He even passed Yanis and was up my ass before we turned. Then he gave us the Mongy salute to which I replied with a middle finger.

19th September 2009, 15:18
Shit, G. I had a similar encounter with such a prat, who turned out to be from Dannevirke. Was with Cowboyz, and we came up behind two cars along Korokipo Rd. Went to overtake them both, and the second car in line tried the same thing. Then he tailgated us as far as the HW50 turnoff, where Lance and I pulled well to the right in the slip lane. This prick then drove through the slip lane and on down Omahu Rd towards Hastings.

I know how you feel. I've used Diablo's on my SV for what seems like forever, and they never let me down once. It was not the best option to put on the GSXR1000 when I needed to put new tyres on it, as they would be chewed out too quickly. The boys here are all running Pilot Road 2's, so decided to try them out.

Personally, they seem to grip well, even in the wet, as I managed to ride bit quicker than some in the rain, and I never lost confidence in them.

Certainly a tyre I would recommend as they tend to stick as well as my favourite Pirrellis.

Sometimes you gotta try something, but the boys all rave about the PR2's, and now, so do I

both , there shaged, diablo rosso are available in 170 rear. Mite try them since i like pirellis but could go with pilot power 2ct front and road 2ct rear. It has a 5.5 rear rim and i had a 180 on it , then tryed a cheapy trademe 170(michelin tour something) and it turns in heaps better, there sposed to run a 170

Not many by the sound of it. Don’t worry about having to have all the safety gear. I have none but I will be riding an easy and appropriate track for the bike and gear I have. The people that want to range out and be challenged will wear the gear they need to for that. This is an interesting and easy/challenging avo as you want it to be. Anyway I am off to church so will see those coming at 1pm. Cheers :sunny:

Wrong answer Jason!

Pirelli Diablo Strada
The Pirelli Diablo Strada is a radial tyre designed for sports tourers, with a surprisingly broad spectrum of applications. Build as a distance/touring tyre, the Diablo Strada can sit as happily on a hypersports bike as middleweight commuter. With a high silica compound the tyre warms quickly and repels water well. In line with its roots as a touring tyre, the Pirelli Diablo Strada's has a tread that is cut 25% deeper than the Diablo for longer tyre life.

There are 4 different types of Diablos: Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa Pro; Pirelli Diablo Strada ; Pirelli Diablo H and Diablo ZR; Pirelli Diablo Corsa III!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that's what Mouse used to race on the GSXR600 and TL1000 about 5 years ago. That is why I ended up with them, as the sides were screwed, but not the middle. I do not class them as a touring tyre at all.

Tyre technology moves fast Shirley, They(stada's) are available in a really good range of sizes too, more so than the rest of the Diablo range. Still deciding what to do with tyres , and if I keep the Duke. A cheaper road bike and another race bike sounds more fun

crazyhorse
20th September 2009, 09:41
Well, they are still my fav tyre and have great stickability. It is obvious that technology changes, that is why there are so many more options out there. But at the time, Strada's were what Pirrelli were promoting as race tyres. But Jason, it doesn't really matter.... that is my opinion, and yes, they have to produce in different sizes, as bikes have different size wheels. I understand that too.

stickability , I like that word lol. 180 and 190 are easy to get ,170 is a inbetween size, thats were the sportyer tyre ranges stop and start again at 160(if your lucky)

Hey we are back .
Whats the advantage of Alloy heads other than better heat dissipation allowing a higher compression ratio ? ( oh and a few KGs ) I understand that there is little difference between the 906's and Edelbrock alloys in performance all other things being equal . I met a guy who did a head swap on his big block Cuda and gained 1/10th of a second over same engine with cast heads. So seems like a lot to spend (USD $1400 a pair fully assembled).

Depends on if the heads are stock replacements, or perf heads.
If perf, usually they have the necesary mods to help gain the extra hp, flowing, porting etc, but of course at a cost. And sure the weight etc but thats kinda irrelevant in a heavy yank muscle car eh.
I've found that its critical to get the intake, head port, carb settings accurate to get the best, but then again I'm talking more race, hot street, than stockish.
Theres so much hp to be made with a good combo of heads, intake, carb, plus setting the dizzy up right, especially on a dizzy machine.

A mate of mine that you may wish to contact, Dave Levien would be good help if you're interested in combos. You prob recall him, long time racer, with Mopars, wedge engine especially.

May try them soon when I need tyres on my Tona.
Just can't get to grips with my Pilot Power 2s. They feel good but not as I would expect, but the same PP2s tyres on the Ducati are exceptional, whereas on the Tona I feel a little uneasy.
But I do realise the differences between the bikes probably is a factor.

I remember Dave , Color me gone Challenger???? I think.

Edelbrock make it easy these days complete matched heads, intake , cam kit
thats about USD$2200. Insanely cheap realy. But the 71 Magnum had the best big block heads and manifold made so there is not much bang for the buck. I have 6 pack rods and steel crank just shitty stock replacement pistons that give me 8.5:1 compression. US$645 buys a complete bottom end rebuild kit with 9.5:1 TRW pistons , that and a modern Lunati Voodoo Cam will get me where I want. With a manual I can get away with a bit of lumpyness. but I still want a torque engine , 1500/2000 to 5500/6000 max.

The power 2's are a great tyre but in my opinion they never quite give you that glued to the road feeling that say Diablo Corsa's or the stickier bridgestones do. The Corsas gave you the feeling you could pitch into a corner at any speed and get away with it.

What have you all been doing while I was away. Went to Hamilton last night and on to Auckland this morning and home tonight. Wet wet wet and bloody cold over the Taupo road in the wet and dark night at 8.30 tonight. I see we have been to the bin and back in that time. Must be Johns pictures.

I almost had the other half of the tax man last night Alvin. I would have had to call someone to pick da bike up. End of the plains Taupo end as you start down the hill. Tax man pulled out of the layby behind a truck I was catching fast. He was going in my direction and did not put his radar on. Was waiting for me to pass him but I saw the flash of the yellow tape on the car as he pulled out. You just gota win some. Sorry you didn’t win this one mate. They will have another chance at me later in the week as I have to do a day trip back to Auckland. X 50 saved me 99% of the time and the eyes did the rest……………………

Depends on where the ride goes. Last month we trundled off to Wairoa, but other times, its been to Waimarama, or a loop somewhere else around the bay. We always end up back at Burger Fuel for a burger and prizes donated by Five Star Suzuki in Napier/Waipukurau.

So, all up, no more than 1-2 hours.

Sure was when I came over he road last night at 8.30 ish. It was the fog that got the better of me. The rain and cold had really set in by the time I got to the summit. The last half of the road was a mission I put down to experience and experience we all need in life. After riding from Hamilton to Auckland in the rain and finding my way around the city in the rain and back to Taupo in the rain I was over it by the summit. But today is another day and I am trying to talk da Mooo in to taking the bike on our return trip over the weekend but she has seen the weather forecast so it might be the cage.

Just come in from work on the farm and it is really very cold and wintery. My boy is home on holiday from school and has the fire on. Think I will do book work for the day. Like Tony and CrazyHores. Theres so much hp to be made with a good combo of heads, intake, carb, plus setting the dizzy up right, especially on a dizzy machine.

Dave, better watch all those intakes, carbs and combos, they will make you dizzy, badly affect your power to weight ratio, and hasten the need for a better fitting set of leathers.

Nice day out on the bike again. A couple of spirited bursts of fun here and there too. On the way home I stopped to visit a mate who pointed out that my front tyre looks a little flat. Upon checking it at home it turns out that I was running the front on 25psi and the rear on 40psi Arrrrgh:no::gob::doh:

I wonder if I can use that as an excuse for my oversight at the end of one straight
and my poor tight cornering abilities at one part on the twisties to Waimarama.

I guess I'll have to start checking such things lol.

BTW, thanks for waiting up for me in Clive people. :niceone: Much appreciated.

Surprising how you can lose pressure so quickly sometimes. The golden rule is THOU SHALT CHECK THY PRESSURES BEFORE EVERY RIDE. I wonder how many do? I should know better, but to be honest, only using the bike for 150kms once a week it's easy to do it every now and then. Had a new set put on in April, did a track day at Manfeild next day ( so pressures re checked) and the rear would lose 5 psi a week for the life of that tyre. Never had one like that before. Fitted a new rear hoop yesterday, and they took off 30 grams of lead, and replaced it with 115 grams directly opposite where the 30 gms had been. Same make and type of tyre. Whats that about? Thats another 85 grams of unsprung weight, no wonder the bike feels slow. Mind you, went to lube the chain hot, when I got home, and found the chain was tighter than a tight thing. Rear wheel would bind at 2 or 3 places it was so overtight. Wonder what thats done to the counter shaft bearing? Pays to check even after the bike shop has fitted tyres (chain tension and tyre pressures).

You cant trust no one but yourself. Yeah funny how tyre pressure can get forgotten about. I think that I will be due for a chain and sprockets shortly and maybe clutch, not much freeplay and it has no progressive take up.

I've had the same thing happen, when someone had done some work on the rear tyre, and the chain was overtight. Made the bike handle like a piece of crap, thankfully did not take me long to realise that was the problem. Problem fixed and feels much better to ride. I for one do not check my tyre pressures regularly enough. However, once I purchase a pressure guage, it will be done prior to each ride. So, yeah, good advice Grant

Yeah tyres again.

Check front this morn, down to 10 pound. Been losing pressure over the last few weeks sitting.
Its lost 25 in the last week.
Best pull wheel off and get checked for a slow leak.

Engine ECU check light came on at Puketapu and stayed on all the way back to BF, so best go home and try and sort, which I did, light's out. Will check this week after work, go for a ride since more daylight.
Plus missus is quite crook so did the good deed and go home early.

Speaking of daylight, are we going to start up the mid week after work rides?

Chain may need replacing mate. Ducs can be hard on them. Replaced mine recently and Andy's from BF, both bike's had done close to 20k, and were binding bad.
Good time to do the sprockets and drop a tooth on the front and get rid of that typical Duc long first gear.

Txt me the destination each Thurs and I might meet up somewhere or wait at my road.
