View Full Version : Hawkes Bay: Hawke's Bay weekend rides
yungatart

Okay, folks.
Daylight Saving time is over so our midweek rides are moving to the weekend.
It will be really hard to please everyone, but I'll give it a go.
Rides will take place on Saturday avo, leaving from BP Taradale Rd at 1.30pm.
First ride is this coming Saturday (24 March) - if the weather turns to crap on any Saturday (highly unlikely in HB!), we can move the ride to Sunday.
I believe we will be joined by an Aucklander for our first outing...:innocent:
Same "rules" as for our midweek rides- these rides are suitable for newbies, inexperienced riders and of course, our resident Nana rider/s
Look forward to seeing you all there!

When I dropped my bike a couple of weeks ago, I smacked the helmet - I am having big trouble trying to find a replacement - appears that I have an extra small head!! Can get a helmet to fit, but can't put my glasses on, I'm bad enough with them, what would I be like without them???
Busa pete is extremely cheeky - but only when he's far away...I think he needs the stick! :dodge:

Do you want to try my helmet for size, my head is bout 55cm at widest point around my 4head, its snug and very comfortable. Can call in with if you want to try it. Shoei does differant size shells as well so if you have a small head you don't end up looking like some type of martian with a huge shell planted on your head.

Hmmm funny how the two small heads belong to da girls of the group. I wounder if that is relevant to the size of the br.....
ummm hang on I better not say that. See if I was out riding I wouldn't be in near as much trouble.

All the above. Actually while your at it you might as well just jump on the biked naked and go for a strop, there are some interesting photos of what happens to the human body, especially particular parts, naked at high speed.
Gotta be a vid on u tube somewhere of that one, hummm, next entertainment for the day.

Was a bloody good ride. We left the goats alone Tart. But we hit a half grown pheasant at +40. Coming out of a right hander then a left hander. As we went from sun to shade outa the left hander there it was. I stood the bike up and backed the throttle off and grabbed a big hand full of brake but as I grabbed the lever it jumped to fly and hit my right hand. Whack. It hit the underside of my hand and dropped down the side of the bike. I lost sight of it then as I looked a long way ahead and let the brake off. The hit bent the front brake lever. Mary saw it drop on to the road and then disappear under the rear wheel. I didn't feel the bump but with the big hit to my hand it had to lock the front and maybe the thump was the back coming back down. Anyway I looked in the mirror to see it trying to fly off to the left of the road. What an adrenalin rush....................... Bloody good feeling after it was all over. (and he got a tight cuddle from me as we prepared to go through the bird! It certainly didn't look like it was going anywhere, just waiting for us to bring it on!)
Nice to see you Hitcher and your lady. Also Micro and Pillon. Sorry we didn't get to chat but we had to get home and get stuff done. To the other H/B riders...Thanks for nice avo out. Till next week............. We missed the ones that didn't come.........Roll on next week..........

I would say so. Just before the first big hill. I did see others but I was a bit distracted by the suicidal one.
As you do.
They were walking down the road looking for their mummies till they got run over. That's a good thing cos the pukekos come out to eat them and they get run over so by the end we have a safeish road again.
My fingers are still quite sore.
EDIT: Better clean the shit of the tank and the side of the bike. Hope it is bird shit.......

I did the road again today. Cranked the speed up a bit and had a boy ride. Was great. No sun strike but 3 sheep a dozen goats and a Hawke. Not bad for that road. The surface was clean and a real buzz to ride on. I think I will sit on the couch and watch the V8's for the avo. I love riding............
Was the Honda club in Gisy or somethin over the weekend? Had a great ride with two I caught up to. They lifted the pace and it was fun. Mr Plod was sitting at the shop with his tax gathering thing going. Thanks God for the detector :-)

Nope definitely not.. Hey thanks again to you guys for the hospitality... Was great :Punk:
The pillion is hooked and convinced me that we should take a tiki-tour, so we left your place and went for a ride down toward Hastings way and back through some Pa settlement thing... Thank god for the GPS :shit:
Just got back to good ol' Auckland (and no it wasnt raining - Well not yet...).. 4.25 hour trip which was OK I thought.. Dam cars that dont get out of the way :innocent:
Was such a pearler this morning (cant believe the weather down there), so decided to stick around for a while.. so we ended up in some random beach (umm, Ocean View something or rather)... Dam twisty road towards the end and a short piece of gravel road then down a one way road towards the beach (just down from Kidnappers I believe)...
Anyway, thanks again and see ya soon

It was the big Ulyssess rally.
Took the missus for a ride down the road to the Tiko pub for a bite. First time she's been pillon for 8 yrs.
Went on the Ducati, since the Trip is'nt user friendly for pillons
There was an old grizzled biker sitting outside having a drink.
He had been at the Uyssess event and told us all about it.
Was great yakking to him about his biking adventures over the years
Lots of bikes passing past.
The missus is now asking....'where we going next week!'.

I'm not sure I can make it tommorrow, as due to the weather this week, I've got nothing done around the farm and have to have a day on the mowers etc, and do some jobs I normally do during the week.
Plus have to go get a horsefloat for the missus, so its not looking good.
I'll definately ride on Sunday somewhere, so if I'm not there by 1.30 assume I wont be coming.
Have a good one.

Hi W.
The goats go at 9.45. Thank goodness. That's the end of them for another fortnight. Jim2 has a bike in the Bay for kneescraper (sp) he is going to drop off here at some time. I will work that out with him tonight and see what plans he has. I would like a ride. So how about Taihape road Pukeamomo (sp) loop back to Taihape road up the back to Bay View and end here for a tea or coffee? Leave da bike here for KS and give Jim2 a ride back to town. He is staying with MSTRS.
How would that work for you Dooly?
All subject to Jim2's plans.

K Just spoke to MSTRS. They will be at Tutira. So we could do the ride above or change it a bit to suit the day and be at the lake at 12.30-1ish to meet Jim2 and MSTRS and Tart etc. Then back here to drop the bike off and home.
I could be in town at 11.30 if the Goat job goes as it should. Meet at the BP Taradale road 11.30? If any other KBer's are in Hawkes Bay and want to join us come along. We are a slow riding group and will stick to the 100-110 Kmh mark so if that is too slow best you don't come on this ride. The back roads are fun with great views and assorted roads.
C U Tomorrow. If it rains see you next week end.......maybe.......................

Nice day's outing today.
Thanks Steve and Mary for the hospitality.
No complaints from the pillon seat. Guess the stories about the Triple being poor for pilloning are a bit off the mark.
She nearly fell off the back on the way home on HW50 when the ponies were unleashed but hey.......I was fine..

How about this guys/gals? For Saturday.
Click on the link.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v410/ctfag/ride1.jpg
Been looking on my map and have marked out a route in green.
Basically goes from Napier then off HW50 thru Valley Rd etc to Argylle, thru Otane to our fav pitstop Patangata pub, then back the other way Kahuranaki Rd, the opposite way we normally go, to Napier/Hav etc.
Looks a good ride, but on the map only about 24 inches:D
Maybe meet a bit earlier to allow for a drink at the Patangata etc, what do you all think?

Valley Road onto Raukawa Road to Argyle is very narrow and heaps of tight corners, its a good ride on this road but you got to be carefull, you could go a short way on Raukawa Road then turn down Te Onapue Road, to the main drag to Otane, then to your favourite spot. But it is a good ride on a good day.:second:

Never been up Valley rd or Argylle way so was just throwing suggestions at it.
Raukawa is good, especially after going thru Whakapirau then.
Maybe Raukawa then Te Onepu, then Otane.

Sorry I can't make it this week but the ride you have mapped out is a good ride. We have done it before and it is 10/10.
Wise to do the Kahuranaki Rd because there will be a lota bikes out and midle road will be a race track for sure.

Hey Dooly. Congrats on setting up the map for an excellent scenic route. Intending riders can print it off and refer to it in the (unlikely) event that they get lost. Yeah, a pit stop at Patangata is essential. Socialising is one of the important factors of a ride such as this. Corners are the other factor.
But hey, those who are a little bit intimidated - don't be! You ALWAYS ride at the speed THAT YOU feel comfortable at. Always!!!!!!!!
I would've fronted 'cept for a planned Ulysses ride.

Was going to catch up with y'all and introduce myself this weekend but the timing didn't work out.
I went for a ride by myself up the Wairoa Road this morning anyway, but after three scares in quick succession I came home again before reaching Tutira :D
First was that lovely patch of gravel across the road coming down the hill towards Devil's elbow (almost a brown trouser moment finding that), then just around the elbow I got hit full in the visor by an unfortunate sparrow, then moments later as I was recovering from the sparrow I overcooked a corner and gave myself another fright. Great afternoons riding. You have a very healthy KB weekend ride group going on up there. Good to put a few more names to bikes and KB identities but it takes me a few meetings till I actually remember people.
Only dissapointment was Alice (Alice is the wide-band navigation system of Telecom Italia, offering web navigation at ADSL speed with lots of special content: music, games, movies, sport and much, much more. Alice is a Ducati Corse Official Sponsor.) not being on the ride as I wanted to hear all the gossip from the trackday she was at on Friday.

last time I was there it was great. Mind you it is 2 hours down and 2 back. So we should look at an early start time for that ride. 10 ish ? Then we would have problems telling the none KBer's.
Hmmmmm Time to make an Email list for our group.
Aye Stick you would be good at da paper work stuff aye? Can you bring a note book and pen next week and we can build a Email list, phone etc to let people know what time the rides etc are should we change them.
Is that ok with you all?
Be an idea for everyone to carry cell phones and perhaps we could establish a register of everyones numbers...save 'Back Tracking' looking for someone. At the very least I think the 'Lead' rider and the 'Sweep" should be in cell contact...just in case...just my 2 cents

Hi Alistair, glad your keen to come north...you got any suggestion re meeting place...how far you want to come???? If you lot were prepared to come as far up as the 'Chook & Filly' on H/W50 I could guarantee you would have a good meal (cheap too) would be good for lunch..plenty of time for the return home...not too late...cheers W
Hi Wasp:yes: Cowboyz has suggested meeting at Waipuk on ANZAC day, then heading into the eastern hills.
The Chook & Filly sounds perfect, is it on that route?

Forecast is not looking good for Anzac day...I might have to miss if you guys are doing an early one, I want to take Henry (the Finn) to an Anzac parade and don't really want to get up in time for the dawn parade....but if you were to do the Chook and Filly, I could meet you there.
mstrs would prolly do the ride....poor hXc is working again.

Dare I say it! we could meet in Dannevirke and shoot out east from there as was sugested ride out to Weber, I cant mention the weather in Dannevirke cos have already had one growling about what I said. Is there any place to get a feed out that way, from what I can remember there use to be a pub out that way, but that was about 30 years ago and it could be overgrown by now:yes:

Due to it being Anzac day will most eateries be open? or does'nt it really apply to that day, can't recall.
An email list sounds great.

I thought that nothing was allowed to open until 1 pm - apart from servos and dairies...however hxc works in a cafe in town and has been rostered to start at 10 am....does that help add to the confusion?

At the risk of being over organised and scarring people away............ I would agree. Stick is going to start the gathering of info at the ride on Saturday. Assuming we ride and people turn up and their is a spare seat and.. etc.....
I recon it is good to have some details. MSTRS got the group back together on Saturday with use of a TXT. Easy and effective.

I have a plan. What say the Ashurst crew head up to Dannevirke, head north east to Waipuk via Hatuma as it looks like there are some some nice back roads enroute.
Meet the Napier guys at Wiapuk, have lunch there or take a spin somewhere else if there's anything around that way.
I'm equally OK with a packed lunch beside a lake or something as well:yes:
Failing that, we could all try and make it one weekend depending on numbers and prior commitments.

This sounds good. We could come down to Norsewood Join up and go to Kopua Hatuma Waipawa Patangata. Lunch ? Then back to Waipawa Tikokino. From there we turn right and you go left. Off home.
Some one will need to bring a map cos I do not know my way around the Kopua area. I have done it and it is a great ride but I will get you lost with out a map.
Are you coming W ? If yes could you have a look at your map and pick a few roads from Kopua to Hatuma?
Who thinks they might come from H/B? What time can you get away? Subject to ANZAC day commitments of course
Can we get to the Hatuma lake?
