haha! you can take the Agip bike for a ride tho, I wont make you swing ;) Ask kick.. im a bit rough!
I'd be keen to see what you think of the bikes chassis and setup. What should be improved/changed.. how it handles.. I think its great but I don't know any better haha.. it might actually handle a bit dodgy!
and yip when i get to chch end of the week I'll pull aux caliper off and see if still dragging :D churr, glad u r still comin down.. u sure u dont want us to hassle harris for one of his bikes for south island rounds and then pinch agip bike for north island rounds or something?
Kai - didn't you say somewhere that the line for that brake was too close to the headers ? if the fliud is being heated it will expand and the brake wil drag, heating it more etc - vicious circle....
Scrivy - look forward to meeting you on the Friday. We'll talk pedal boxes....

Wouldn't it 'vent' back through the cylinder to reduce pressure?

And check the m/c CAN vent - wouldn't be the first one with the venting arrangements blocked...
Scrivy - opened the file - slowly as I must on dialup - and had time to see IMBED Package.....and started wondering just what damage you'd done to Bob....
Then it opened properly....yes, some sort of travel limiter for the balance bar wouldn't be hard to do - leave enough movement to operate both brakes normally but if one fails that side would go on the limiter and you'd still have the other.

Thanks for the offer of your chair, but that's not how I operate. As you know, I'm a giver, not a taker. There's no chance I'd take a toy off someone else so I could have fun at their expense. I'd rather watch you going round. (I was gunna say 'going hard' - but flagged that thought - 'cause I knew Kick would come back with a gaybo comment....)
naw.. well the offer is there if you change your mind, I can't see myself being able to afford north island round, I didn't realise they were even dearer than south. Will give Paeroa a crack tho! so Agip bike will be up here if you want it :D gwaarn.. would be good to see it n the hands of a good rider.

The Tilton master cylinders that we have has a full stroke (when they bottom out) of 25mm. At 25mm of lonesome travel, the balance bar will be on quite the piss, which it should be designed to not allow. Regardless of this, when one bottoms out, it should then pivot off that and operate the other one provided you have enough lever travel no? Looking at our outfit, that's going to be heaps of required travel, but not impossible.

Won't make for a completely seperate system but one, (or a combination) of these can isolate a line if it develops a sudden leak.

SNAP!!
I was telling my brother in Aussie yesterday about my crash, and he said 'Why don't you use a hydraulic fuse?' I said WTF??? He told me bascially about the info you gave us.
He's a pilot, was Captain on (747-777), Airbus A..... (feckin allsorts) and flys allsorts of helicopters, also a safety officer for Boeing. He's also developed a vortex generator for fixed wings and rotors that will revolutionise the industry once caa/faa and Aussie/US military get everything approved. PHD in Aeronautical aerodynamics etc etc.... so knows his stuff.

I guess the trouble with anything falling under what might be called a "safety" umbrella is that it's going to attract the attention of various authorities who like such things to be categorised under one or more standards, regardless of how well they might work. If that's not the case here then I'd be talking to someone like Parker Hannifin. In fact I'd be talking to them anyway, I know their valves meet existing industrial safety standards and someone's bound to have done some sort of automotive brake compliance legwork already.

Mixed weekend for Round 1 of the Nats for Agip Bike.. quickly learning that much better prep is required for the bike from now on, and it needs a lot of work to get it up to standard.
Friday test session revealed the bike didn't handle right.. it seemed fine at Wanganui but I had put the weaving around down to being on a street circuit, once we got onto Ruapuna and it was still weaving around we figured something is wrong with the bike.
Mucked about with it all weekend but never got rid of the weaving around, found a host of problems to be addressed though (edit: one being the chassis looks bent, similar to what your bike looks like now scrivy but not as extreme, just a bit of a bow), luckily Phil offered to buy the parts and do the work as I had to go back to Dunedin and work this week.
I pulled the bike apart before I left chch and Phil now has the task of putting it back together with new rose joints and nuts and bolts to try and get rid of the play and slop we had in the front and sidewheel. Replacing the main bolt that holds the sidecar wheel hub assembly together, that had been stripped and munted and had started working its way out.. wasn't far off popping out and we would have lost our sidewheel! luckily Richie spotted it and we tie wired it back down so we could do the last race.
I also asked Phil to replace the bushes on the handlebars/steering stem and try and stiffen the handle bars up, the top mount for the handle bars had cracked on either side so I think he is making up a new plate out of thicker steel and another reinforcing bar on the left side like Nev had made on the right side. Hopefully keeps the handlebars rigid and secure. See how Phil goes with replacing the bushes though, he thought it might be a bit tricky.. See how he goes.
We also had to strip, clean and rebleed the front brake again as more dirt went into master cyl (no dust boot/cover) and the front brake and siezed on and was dragging. Took that caliper off and swapped it with the the handbrake caliper and we just did away with the handlebar lever and emergency brake option for now until we rebuild the other front caliper and then we can put the handbrake/emergency brake back on.
Bled the system and brakes did an OK job.. never went fast enough to push the brakes. Lapped at 2:05 all weekend.. A bummer as we were hoping to do 1:55 or faster with our new rear tyre and better traction. Oh well.
Couldn't seem to get the brake bias working either, you can put heaps/majority to the back, but the best we managed was about 50/50 to the front.. disk was cold to touch when we came in after some playing with the bias (like pinky) and on the second outing with the bias wound to the front as much as possible the disk was a bit warmer but still not putting more to the front than the back. Another item on the list..
Gearbox got stuck in one gear on the last lap or two and during the warm down lap after last race.. couldnt change up or down at all, even phil tried helping with his hand but we couldnt get it to budge and change gear.. after the race and once engine cooled it seemed to be able to change gears again - might be on its way out..
picked up a spare FZR motor tho.. its all there except one conrod is poking out the crank case.. I'm looking for an FZR or YZF empty crankcase and then with the spares I have at home I could start putting together a spare complete motor for the bike - would be nice.

thanks to Kick for the big help getting us entered for round 2, for supplying new brake pads, the rear tyre which still hooks up nicely on the 1 or 2 laps we did. My sister for the loan of the car. Scrivy n SidecarBob who, with no complaints, spent a shit load of their time trying to help phil and I get the agip bike handling so I was comfortable.. sadly it didn't help, umm Rob Taylor for recharging my rear shock and having a look at it.. also no charge and no complaints even tho I was just one of those strange sidecar fellas and he was busy as with the superbikes etc. me swinger Phil for putting in a good few hours working last week on the bike replacing rose joints and nuts and bolts and shit.. which also didn't help but needed to be done. Glen for towing the bike down and putting on a good show with AJ.. he needs a newer bike and I recon he'd give the youngins a run for their money!
hmm, all the sidecar family for loan of tools, time, advice, tie wire.. etc
spyda for the laughs and great commentary.
no doubt I've missed some out.. but everyones help is appreciated and always amazed by the amount of it. sidecar racing

Haven't quite figured it out yet.. for one the rear shock seems to stick in place, you compress it and it just stays down, does not rebound.. So whip that off and take it somewhere to look at first.. then see what else is wrong with the bike.. we've done a bit to it - process of elimination we hope.
seems to be an overnight change from handling mint to handling like shite. I thought it was OK at wangas.. but it was a bit funny braking at some points but I just put it down to the street/road surface..

It is a very good outfit, the engine really needs remounting as it doesn't sit at quite the right angle but this would be one of the best short 1000cc outfits in the country
In the North you dont really get any club racing/championships so you'd have Wanganui, Paeroa, BSTT, two National rounds and maybe the odd other day with different clubs
If you feel like traveling there's also two National rounds in the South and about 7 club days at either Levels or Ruapuna

Are you based in South Island? then lots of racing. heres a rough example: July - Timaru, Aug - Timaru, Sep - ChCh, Sep - Timaru, Sep - Chch, Oct - Barry Sheene Hampton Downs, Nov - Chch, Dec - Wanganui, Jan NZ Nationals CHCH, Jan NZ Nationals Timaru, Feb Paeroa, Feb CHCH, March NZ Nats - Hamilton, March NZ Nats Taupo.. then a break until July again.
so basically every month and often multiple times per month..
That windle is bloody awesome.. (others will know its history better) buy it if your in the south island and gonna race it down here with us.. if your a north islander then don't bother its a pile of shite :) hahaha

Have you even had a close up look at a sidecar and thought about what it means to run one or talked to any guys that do?
They take up a car sized space in your shed, unless you have a decent sized trailer or a transit van you'll need something to transport it, you'll need a swinger, you cant buy much shit off the shelf for them unless it's engine or brake bits, tyres are $400-500 a shot but can last quite a while depending on how you ride
You'd be better off going to the NZSRA have a go day (if they're having one) this year and having a good talk to people and having a look over some

I have had a talk with a couple of guys that run them and that know people who run them (eg Aaron Lovell, Jay Lawrence) I have a swinger lined up and have no issue with having to manufacture any components that we might need storage and transport are no dramas and the tyres don't seem much considing how much i currently spend on superbike slicks.
At this stage i am still just looking at the class as it is the only other class that holds any appeal to me other than superbikes (which i'm way to slow to be competing in haha) so am just trying to get some opinions on the windle (as that is the only chair that i have found for sale) and was also curious how often they are run (which has been already been answered) but i will no doubt be at paeroa checking a few of them out as well.

Chris Lawrence has a chair for sale I think, which might be a better first chair than the Windle. I've only ridden two chairs, and am currently rebuilding our own to race, the Windle was one I've ridden. It's a great bike, but as Kickaha said it might need some work. There is this black short bike for sale in ChCh built by Mo Haley.. he is now open to offers, name is Graeme Harris.. I'v seen him offer his for 7,500 with his fast motor in it, he says he will drop the price if you take it with a standard R1 motor and surely the overall price is dropping anyway as he has bought a new bike and needs to get rid of the old one.
The windle has been on trademe for a long time, so I'm sure he is open to cash offers.

see how we go with Agip bike, could swing either way, I asked Phil to measure the rear shock from eye to eye and see if we can borrow one the same or close and go for a boost around the track to see if it cures the handling under brakes issue. If it does then we might keep the bike running and try make the North Island nats rounds (not sure about Paeroa anymore, don't think we can manage it - hope you guys get decent entries tho!! so its there for me to race at next year)
If the shock doesn't help then I guess we do as planned when we first got the bike and strip it right down and rebuild it.. That would prob see us out of action until King of Levels 2013 in July.
will make progress updates as they come :D

Just wondering on tyre runout.....
Phil and I both came in and said we thought it seemed worse with the wets on in the wet.. but it could have been exaggerated by the slippery surface or something.. it felt much more nervous in the wet and we were going slower.
we have noticed most of the wheels are a bit dinged up or have buckled rims.. and the tyres are pretty old, all of them except the rear which Warwick gave us before BSTTC

Sorry, my mistake. I meant if one side of the tyre was faulty. I had a front tyre do that years and years ago. Chords/canvas on one side delaminated, and the tyre went 'soft' on one side, causing a hell of a head shake, and was basically uncontrollable.
A new front tyre and all was ok.

Belongs to Keith Sinclair in Auckland. Was ex Leppard/Goodin then ex Lawrance Bros. Lawrances won the title on it in '93, with an air cooled drag motor in it! Was a beast! Then they put a GSXR1100WP in it. Now Keiths implanted a late model ZX10 in it. It's not quite finished apparantely, but not far off. A little TLC and you'll be smoking Gordy...... It actually came from a mis spelt text between wife & self. She said she wanted to do something in paticular & I txt her back & said I wanted to atch instead of Watch.
She asked me what atching was & so I described it, now that thing is known as Atching, from the English word, "watching"

Can someone tell me when the sidecars start the season?? :soon:
I'm pretty well set up now, just need to team up with a swinger and we'll be away.
I dont expect to be winning straight away, May take a race or two to sort out any bugs.
