Thought I'd start a thread for the sidecar scene - mainly in the South Island since thats where I am (and the North Islanders seem to have a few more people in it) But anyones included of course!

We race whenever the bikes do if you haven't seen us or haven't come out to the track for a watch or a play yet.

Best thing about sidecars you can try before you buy! Come have a go during a lunch break or a practice day, (this applies to anyone, male female whatever, u don't need any prior experience and most of the time we can maybe find some gear to fit you if you don't have leathers/helmet etc.)

Most of us fellas here in South Island are keen as to take people out and get some new people into it. We usually do this during lunch breaks at race meetings - or on Tuesdays/Fridays during practice sessions. Swinging is cheap, a race license is about all you need! if you wanted to come compete and race.. u can get day licenses for 20 bucks or club licenses for cheap as - Come have a go. (you don't need anything to have a go with us to see what its like though)

If any of you, racers or spectators, that come to our club events like King of Levels/King of Ruapuna or haven't been but would be interested then come! and come over to the sidecars and have a go at lunch time.. Kills a few minute, its fun trust me, and maybe you decide to come for a free ride during our races and get into it or maybe even buy your own bike. They are cheap compared to what you guys spend on the 2 wheelers - and if ur just a passenger then its a good way to fill in the gap between races for your class :D

Couple of photos of my bike as it is now.. shes been in a shed for more than a year and needs a full going over and tidy up. But here are the before shots I guess.. when there is enough of a gap between events I'll tidy it up a bit..

One more for good luck.

If people give it a go and love it there are chances to get into the sport and get racing pretty easily/quickly. Some good bikes for sale in the South Island that need riders and swingers! good opportunity to start new team, and some bikes may need swingers or swingers may need riders! plenty of opportunity to get a few more bikes on the grid down here. We have been struggling a bit for a while. Hoping for a decent turn out August KOL rnd 2 (fingers crossed) and a few new teams would pick things up and make it more exciting for spectators too.

Im keen as to get on the side of one of these and give it a go as Ive told you before. what date it KOL round 2, I will try to get there for it.

what do these things sell for? I could be interested in one as a next toy - although I did just buy an ugly ass 1004 GSXR 1000, so might be a while before I convince the missus a sidecar is a good idea as well - I guess I could tell her she can swing for me though?

August 11th

what do these things sell for?
Cheap for the amount of fun! I got mine for 5k with everything I needed for a season or more maybe.. see how i go with the tyres but didn't lunch the wets even though the back was loving the freedom. First one I bought was 3,500 I lie it was actually only 3,000 also ready to go. I was looking at one in chch before this one. Think they wanted 4k ONO.. I'm not sure if that has sold yet or not.. Kickaha may know..
Then if you want to be flash, I recon 10k or a pinch more will get you some serious machines.. proper competitive short bike that came ex UK, fuel inj (oops forgot he took injection off and put carbs on.. but think injection still with it) - R1 made by Windle. and a long bike made in nz that is got good potential and I'm told is a pretty damn fast bike. I guess for the pricier ones (you would be gettng serious looking for NZ nat champs title) you could form a team and put 5k in each.. massive bang for buck.

although I did just buy an ugly ass 1004 [2004?-Ed] GSXR 1000
Filthy, how much? sell me your engine... would go mint in the bike :D

Good idea about the swinging, need more girls in it - Few in it though, North Island. All female team n stuff. She would love it if she likes having fun haha
- and yea.. I didn't tell my mrs until I had paid most of it off ;) the deal was done! First one I just didn't mention at all.. it just sort of showed up in the garage one day hehe

The pirates old Windle was on trademe for $13,000 not long ago, two sets of wheels and tyres, plus another set of hoops. A shit load of other spares too.

I've ridden only two chairs, the pig that Leanne Thomas had, and that Windle. The price difference between them was $9,000, and there wouldn't have been a seconds hesitation...Windle all the way! When we first met Pete when he was selling it, we thought he was spinning a line when he said it was the best short chair in the country, I don't think that anymore.

Pirate owned it before Bill although he spent more time pushing it and trying to start it than racing it, it would be a very competitive bike with the right crew on it

The guy currently seling it has only done a few races on it, came form a speedway background and I think he thought he'd be able to clean us up,he also didn't appreciate the sense of humour some of us have

I'd sell the carbs and put the injection back on it

Probably the best one with a 1000cc motor in it

Funnily enough they're in the rule book Sloan!
over the years there's been Morgans and three wheeled Minis and other contraptions but the formula is what you see now, give or take 100mm here and there.

yea there are some rules, there is specified measurements for the front and rear wheel positions (think they have to be pretty close to inline with each other) and also the location of sidechair wheel.. and overall length/width dimensions I think..

can't be a trike or stuff like that I don't think

No a Spyder or similar couldn't run in modern sidecars, maybe you could put a remit in so if it's got three wheels in anyway, shape or from it's eligble

The current rules mean the front and rear wheel can be offset no more than 75mm and the sidewheel has to be within the line of the rear axle and midpoint of the wheelbase

Looking at those rules I reckon I could make my BMW meet the requirements.

I cant see anything about having a compulsory swinger all it says is that you have to have a maximum of 1 swinger....

I could make even be real fancy and switch sides for the "sidecar" so its on the outside of each track.

Probably could but it wouldn't be competitive, there's a couple in the UK/Europe running S1000R motors

I've had the odd comment about how I must be mental to passenger on a sidecar and I must remove my brain before the races, the reality is that it's nowhere near as bad or as dangerous as most people seem to think

Another common misconception seems to be that you need a lot of upper body strength, anyone whose seen my puny arms would know that can't be true, a little bit of coordination and timing goes a long way when you're moving about at speed, get it right and the g force can help you a little bit,get it wrong and you'll either not make the move or be sliding down the track
(which will cost you a slab of piss, pity you missed out on that shout Spyda :bleh:)

I've found aerobic fitness helps the most hence I do a bit of riding on the MTB from time to time (not anywhere near enough though)

People tell me they wouldn't want to do it because they have no control, perhaps they could have a word to a rider who made a similar comment and then had their swinger run them off the track just to show the rider how much "control" they really had

The passenger can steer the outfit, cause it to loose or gain traction and cause it to handle like shit depending on where they put their weight

Might be worth a look to let some guys come along and race there trikes!

That's very interesting Kick, thanks. It differs immensely from my own spastic technique which simply involves flailing around like an epileptic while attempting not to get thrown off.

There's more "work" in swinging one lap than an entire ten lap race on a solo.

Spyda would have more of an idea about that than I would, there's another one he built similar same up North as well

There was also an outfit we called Battletruck which was a short bike with wishbone front end, first bike I went under the 1.50 mark on with an old GSX1100 engine in it made by another guy up North in the early eighties, it's sitting rusting away in someones back yard with a heap of bits stripped off it and just about only fit for scrap

We actually had the fastest lap of the weekend 1.49 something, Phil qualified on pole when that bike still had the Kawasaki in it but failed to start, Brian and Denny rolled over 3-3 laps in and it was red flagged and restarted and Jonny B and Brett won it, they follwed us for 1/2 distance passed us and pulled a gap

Next year Johnny and Brett showed how much they were dicking around by knocking another 5 seconds off when dicing with Aarol Lovell

I meant the bikes, clearly the riders can commute. A number of competitors that wanted to attend have been prevented from doing so by the Australian governing body, due to their national rounds being held at that time.
They could leave the container too, but they dont steer to well on tight circiuts.

If anyone wants to have a couple laps on a sidecar come over and see us during the day (before lunch break) Just walk up and say g'day we are all friendly and keen to get people into it. - I am the number 35 outfit

I'll take you for a few laps at lunch and the other guys will prob be keen too. Its fun if you haven't tried it you should at least give it one go.

Also, I'm going to be in Timaru the friday before (10th Aug) just for some testing laps, so if you live in timaru or are there, pop into the track around 12pm-3pm and happy to give you a few laps as well, probably better on the friday as more time to stuff around. again number 35 sidecar if your not sure where to head.

You will need leathers/helmet/gloves.

Cheers!

Overcast, but dry and warm greeted 22 sidecar teams for the qualifying sessions. After free practice a few of the top teams were having to make adjustments to front and back suspension.

As qualifying one got under way, it was clear that Jorg Steinhausen and Gregory Cluze, Steinhausen Racing, LCR, BMW wanted to get a clear track and get a fast time, and they did, they set the fastest time of 1:31.004, however as the session came to an end they found that they had lost water from the engine, so it was back to their garage to investigate, and with little time before the second qualifying session they were going to work hard, as too were Kurt Hock and Enrico Becker, Hock Racing, LCR, Suzuki, as they had some major mechanical problems, and I think they have to change an engine, but they managed to set the eighth fastest time of 1:33.808. Just in front of them are the Hegarty/Lawson Team of Sean Hegarty and Calum Lawson on their LCR Suzuki, they set a time of 1:33.764 and hope to improve in the second qualifying session, Sean said “it is good to be back racing at this level and we don’t have any problems with the bike, we are looking forward to the next session”

Second to Steinhausen and Cluze is the Birchall Brothers Ben and Tom on their Mitchells of Mansfield, LCR, Yamaha with a time of 1:31.104 they had no problems and hope to improve on their time, third fastest is Pekka Paivarinta and Adolf Hanni, Team Suzuki Finland, LCR, Suzuki with a time of 1:31.390. Marcus Schlosser and Thomas Hofer set a time of 1:31.598 on their Team Schlosser, LCR, Suzuki, with Tim Reeves and Ashley Hawes fifth with a time of 1:31.675 on their “The Relocator” LCR, Suzuki.

Qualifying 2 got under way with the same conditions as the first, dry and warm, this would determine the grid positions for tomorrow and Sunday’s races.

The top five teams did not improve on their times from the first qualifying session so this left Jorg Steinhausen and Gregory Cluze starting from pole position but they still have a water problem with their machine so they only managed six laps in this session, and they will be working into the night to rectify this problem. Only 00:00.100 separate them and second place on the grid the Birchall Brothers, Ben and Tom who had a steady qualifying session with no problems with their machine and look forward to tomorrow’s race. Sitting third is Pekka Paivarinta and Adolf Hanni they too did not have any problems. Markus Schlosser and Thomas Hofer are pleased with their fourth place on the grid just in front of Tim Reeves and Ashley Hawes, they had a warning light come up on their dash board but could not find any problems with their machine.

Sitting eleventh on the grid is Bennie Streuer and new passenger Freek Dirksen on their Team Streuer, LCR, Suzuki, a problem for them as the passenger fell out of the sidecar, but was back in the paddock with no problems and he will be okay for the races.

This weekend sees the first all female sidecar team competing in the World Championship level, Sophia Kirchofer and Anna Burkard are enjoying the experienceon their Ladies Team Suisse, LCR Suzuki, and after the first qualifying session they made some adjustments to their machine and will start the races with a qualifying time of 1:40.292

cool :niceone:

one on the left looks alright eh.

Good weekend at King of Levels today.

took 3 girls for a couple 'have a go laps' not a single lad..

you're all soft!

Day was mint, we were at the gate nice and early, about quarter to 8. Put the slicks back on the bike and said hello to the other lads.. 4 sidecars today, up 1 from the usual turnout :D
Bike fired up sweet, warmed it up and checked a couple thing. Pretty much running it exactly how we bought it but playing around a little with tyre pressures to find some grip.
Since our first season as a team, swinger fresh into the sport, 1st race in the dry today for us and only 2nd race in total. We had a goal for the rest of this season to get down to the mid 1.20's around Levels. New bike, new team, and thats about what this bike was doing with its old owner apart from the odd good day.
Practice was new, first time in the dry so it was alot faster than last time, Swinger forgot what he was supposed to do briefly and the bike was a mess. Set a qualifying time of 1.28.00. Were kind of pleased with that since he was barely on the thing.

First race was good, this bike launches pretty well, so we shot to 2nd and almost went for 1st but figured we would just be getting in the way. Sat in 2nd for a good few laps but having big problems with the gear shifting and got neutrals alot which saw us drop to 3rd.. back into 2nd for a brief stint then more missed shifts and cursing to the heavens. finished 3rd. Best time of 1.27.3.. again pretty happy with that as the bike we were dicing with told us we looked bloody sketchy and was waiting for the swinger to drop off or something interesting to happen!

Second race all good, we decided to launch for it and hopped to 1st, first couple corners ok, onto the main straigh, pop into false neutral, 3 attempts to get it into the next gear and finally (bit hard on gear lol) slammed it in. Dropped to last I think by then, Couple good laps, I think we got back to 3rd, starting picking up the pace with the swinger getting into the swing of things and getting used to the sudden jump in pace from our wet outings.

I think the 3rd or 4th lap saw us cock up turn 2 (back in 3rd by then) and head for the tyre wall, came very close but somehow managed to keep bike under control and pop back out in track.. well last by now. Sore foot from the shit gear shifter and tired from hitting so many disappointing neutrals. Engine had been well abused.
Best lap time of 1.26.3 getting close to the 1.25 we wanted.. and since we are so close we reset the goal to closer to 1.20.. lets say low 1.20's if we can. Still a bit untidy and pleeenty of experience and practice to go!

Last race meh, both getting tired, 7 laps of missed shifts wasn't looking that exciting but once the bike fired up I was keen to go.. quick warm up lap and ready for launch. Stall.. had it in 2nd or 3rd.. heaaaps of clutch to get it going and by then we are like a 1/4 lap down and a couple missed shifts and thats half a lap behind.. left it in 5th gear and just cruised, swinger liked this :) dunno what lap times were, will look on mylaps later to see..
bonus of pissing around by ourselves in last race was I got to just concentrate on the back straight, so floor it and just don't let go until I passed the 100m marker then brake hard and point it in.. I was having trouble with braking too early and got a bit of a feeel for it in that last race, might knock a couple more millisecond off the lap times just that alone.

Mint day all round, up in chch next week for some prac laps of ruapuna and to start painting the bike in its Agip colors

Heres a clip of what to expect..

I'm keen. Have only swung for Ian Cottrell (#128) and Peter Willmott (#77) in the classics so far, but am interested in more swinging until a decent 600cc F2 shorty comes up on TradeMe that I can pick up to help fill out the field (or at least, the backmarkers).

You'd be better off looking at getting one out of the UK,the chances of getting a decent 600 off trademe are slim to none and currently there isn't even enough of them for an F2 class in NZ

Cheers David, You're in the North Island eh? so take note north islanders swinger avail :) get racing, If you were in the south island/canterbury region we would have use for you in up coming races next month. Think my swinger is going off on holiday for one or two of the meetings.

How come you want a 600cc F2? yea we don't have any racing with us down here at the moment, might as well grab a 1000cc short bike :) plenty of those around and a lot of fun.

Yes, in Auckland but quite happy to look at any racing between here and Mansfield.

Maybe give Squiggles (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php/2980-Squiggles) a message, he has also swung for Classic #128 in the past and only stopped because he moved down to Ashburton. I need to ensure he stays keen on the sport, as he's the most likely to chip in with me for the sidecar and the only one of my friends willing to swing with me/at all, haha!

Figured the 600cc would be a cheaper and safer way to get into the sport and get my head around the change from two- to three-wheelers - or is it worth cracking straight onto a thou? While I've thoroughly enjoyed the swinging I've done, I am keen to give it a crack from behind the handlebars. :)

will give him a pm, get him to come and post on this thread :D

I recon you could do what I did and just grab some of the cheaper kiwi made short bikes here, the one I got now was cheap as chips and ready to race. it has an old 1000cc in it so it probably makes about as much or less power than a 600cc f2 that ur likely to import from overseas. I've seen bikes from 3.5k kiwi to 5k ish. Mine at the upper end of the scale, has great neutral handling, very forgiving and is great to ride and learn on.

might be hard to find all the ones available, scattered around the country and rarely on trademe..

this ones avail if u have a bit of cash :D

For anyone wanting a good F2 engine.
I have two of these left.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/parts-for-sale/complete-engines/auction-501353883.htm
I do actually have the carbs & black boxes (for sidecar people only) & they are fitted with proven sidecar sumps, as opposed to non proven ones, which frequently result in un planned seizures.
They were in Ian Bell's 2001 TT, DMR 600 outfit.
Had planned to repower the pink bike, but it was too much effort for little return.
As it turned out, At Eastern Creek This year Tracey was 5 seconds a lap quicker with her '96 DMR 600, Thundercat powered outfit, than the other girl team, on a 2009 GSXR600 LCR.

but yea, if I fly chch to auckland which is cheapest, I can get dropped off in chch and picked up in auckland by family and taken to hampton downs or wherever i need to go at least (hopefully they won't ask for gas money from me hahah!)

and if I crash in someones van for free out front of motel or whatever thats accom sorted

and if someone covers race gas and entry thats the actual racing sorted.. will run my tyres to the wire ;)

I'd have approx 360-400 left over after return flights and putting some money aside for food for the 3 days, to get the sidecar from chch to hampton downs.. if this only covers costs one way thats ok.. although I would have to prob call in more favours with the bike after, would need tow and storeage somewhere for a couple weeks while i save cash to transport it back down south..

so yea figures are tight but im keen haha

or. if someone is driving up a car, could tow bike and trailer, could put in money for that depending on over all costs of petrol for tow car and ferry ticket for us and car and trailer etc. would drive with them if possible, could share driving etc. and would use money allocated for flights to cover driving costs instead..

getting it on the back of an empty truck or something for cheap would be ideal though! Oh yea - the bike could be collected anytime from chch after Sept 23 to make its way north.. if thats useful info or not.. haha

anyway those are my updates.. bit of a rant.

I have been speaking with Chris Lawrence (Racer 40) this arvo & he has asked me to post up the following.
He has avaliable to use at the Cemetary Circuit, an old CBR1000 powered short (front engined) sidecar.
This was going to be ridden by Nodrog off here, but of course he has a splendid & fully functioning ZX10 outfit of his own now.
Anyone wishing to use this outfit will need a full senior MNZ licence, with three or more stamps & will need to pay for entry & enter the event themselves.
The machine will be transported to the track, so if you are racing a solo there, it wont be a lot of extra effort to join the sidecar guys for the day.
The outfit is for sale for $3000, so if you really like it, you can take it home!!
P.M Chris or I if interested.
Cheers,
Steve.
I have also posted up a thread containing this post.

as for the bike, as we sanded down the old paint we uncovered bog bridging gaps where fibreglass should be.. and bog basically everywhere.. they used bog to repair any cracks or broken fibreglass lol.. soo slowly buzzing it all off and then got a wee bit of fibreglassing to do tomorrow. sidepod fairing is also a bit fucked. its made out of aluminium i think.. magnet wouldnt stick to it.. need someone who can weld aluminium for cheeeaap..

Dont fret about the 115 percent (for it is 115 percent) The decision is usually left up to the class as a whole to decide.

Our bike is getting picked up soon thanks to www.biketranz.co.nz, and will be heading to the North Island ready to race at the Barry Sheene, A big thanks to Bike Tranz for the massive help with transporting my bike and offering to help any Southerners out with big discount transport (MAKE USE!), was hoping a couple more South Islanders would get keen to come up but so far none can make it. Will keep trying.

Massive thanks the all the help from all the fellow Sidecar racers up there on the N.I., big thanks to Sidecar Bob and Sherson Auto Center for the help and time calling around and organizing all the details for the trip for me, storeage for the bike up north, transport to wanganui street race, helping out in any and every way he could. Pretty stoked! Also thanks to Wildman for his generous offers too, and anyone I've missed, the rest of all you guys for the enthusiasm and supportive comments on Kiwibiker ;) makes this sport minnnt, love it!

looking forward to receiving more of your North Island generousity soon (whos van am I sleeping in again? I'll still be needing that haha)

Gotta thank Colour Connection in Dunedin who supplied all the painting supplies at half price, check em out for any Auto/Race painting supplies.

Ross Bachop for the agip signwriting (yet to see the finished product.. will give more praise if it looks good haha)

cheers NZSRA for keeping the sport alive and working hard to get us moving forward! and working even harder to get us some awesome racing

looking forward to meeting you all at the Barry Sheene and having some bloody good fun.

Plan to race with you guys at Cemetery Circuit Boxing Day - Will chuck my entry in when there are 14 others to join me!

Want to be at the Paeroa as well, and the North Island National Rounds (Grant from Chch should be there on a Windle too, hopefully Kickaha and the rest of the southerners too!)

And then prob do it all over, Barry Sheene next year :D hahahaha

Will make up another thread about the trip and barry sheene weekend etc and thank Bike Tranz again for their help and support of us and our sport. Massive thanks.

if anyone needs motorcycle transport solutions, you definitely need to try the top team at www.biketranz.co.nz they will see you right and protect your pride and joy the whole journey. They will help out with transport for racing too, so try them out for any north to south or south to north racing trips or just buying/selling bikes or touring.
