Just took my new Windle up n down the street a couple times - man it feels cool! Can't wait to have a play on a track with it asap.
I don't fit in it just yet, seat needs to be more accomodating - knee to foot pedals seem all good, comfy but my butt is too far to the rear of the bike, gonna have to make a new seat to sit me in it.. or if its too close to the rear tyre.. then may have to move my knees and the pedals forward. It's gay being tall when it comes to bikes n sidecars!
faarkin cool bike tho, so amped on it - needs 6 tubes of autosol and a weekend at least to polish the frame and all the bits that have surface rust from the neglectful speedway fulla.
needs a new coat of paint, other than that I recon she's ready to race. Looms a bit much, but its in better shape than the agips!

I'm now one of those munters that has 2 sidecars even tho you can only ride one at a time..
Going to use it to get numbers on the grid down south etc.. and just see what happens. offer it to get people a taste for the sport - or rent it out. We'll see..
Will take care of them both anyway.

^^ Opportunity for people to race a sidecar and have a go..
KOR Rnd 2 was OK, I was in a good mood anyway having just ridden my new windle up and down the street in Tauranga haha, but ChCh was rainy and cold upon my return. There were 4 of us who showed up. Warwick and Matt on Jo's LCR, Macdonalds on their LCR, Harris and Pommy Paul on the Chivas rig and ourselves on the Agip bike.
Day started off ok, set up our shelters and got the bike ready, fitting the flashing rain light and tidying up some bits and pieces and putting the wets on - everyone was pretty keen to get out there even though the track was not far off ideal for the Americas cup boats instead. We got out there and I hated it - no mud guard on the agip bike ment I couldn't see f-all and couldn't spend all my time wiping my visor so it was painfully slow - on top of that I was not comfortable on the bike.. it was very twitchy and wouldn't slide like it normally does - rather it gripped then let go then gripped then let go and felt awful.. normally it just shorta slides sideways everywhere in the wet. Never mind.. Alex was fast and gotta say Warwick was pretty quick too powering through the puddles and flooding like it was dry - those LCRs are foookin fast.
Harris was doing his thing too.. Race 1 we bailed out after 1 lap fearing an accident was going to happen with us being at half the race pace and me not being able to see where I was going - it was really pissing down. We pitted in and watched the two LCRs battling it out - it looked good, Warwick was outbraking alex a bit and really pulling him in in some places, and then AJ would get better drive out of corners or carry more speed in others.. it was good.. and both full throttle down the straight with puddles everywhere - no wonder they used to call em worms! they just wriggled their way down the straight haha was awesome.
Harris did OK I think? he dropped behind a fair bit after a couple of laps. At the start of the day both Harris and Paul were saying the bike felt great and it was awesome... .. by the end of the day it was handling like shit apparently and needed a lot of work done to it.
Race 2 it was drying up, we went out for a play and had a little bit more fun this time, I finished the race slowly but had fun and good practice. Bike still felt twitchy.. pulls hard to the right under brakes (doesnt do this with slicks/in the dry??)
Harris spun out and broke Pauls thumb.. so we beat him haha. Race 3 it was drying out so we finally got to have a bit of fun, on wets still but bike felt normal again once track dried out, few big slides but all in good fun. Harris had a newbie on for the race and he just took off like a shot - poor newbie! it wasn't long before we passed them though as he overcooked it and lost it around a corner and obviously didnt get the bike restarted so they just stood there on the side of the track n watched..
Big thanks to MCI and all the flaggies etc - bloody legends!

The weather forecast a few days out looked promising but come the day of the event it was overcast and looking like a bit of water was due to arrive
Matt rang his dad who bought us out an ezi-up as we were feeling a bit lower class as every other team had one
Before practice we gave the bike a look over and put the wets on and before too long we head out onto a track that’s getting wetter by the minute
Being only the second meeting riding the outfit I’m taking it a bit easy and expecting the others to come past me but Alex hasn’t even made a lap and pulled off with gearshift problems and Graeme/Paul and Kai/Phil don’t catch up
I gas it up a bit in some places and brake hard in others trying to judge just how hard I can push it before it turns to custard , we get a 4-5 laps in then pull back in
A quick check over shows the rear wheel is starting to come loose so I fix that and check the gas
Alex is cutting some holes in the catch tray to allow the gear selector shaft a bit more movement as he could only get the one gear
Race 1
More rain and wetter than practice
I hit a huge puddle on the exit to the pits and get a bucket load of water down the front of my leathers before I’ve even made 25 metres and Alex is off like the flags just dropped to push hard on the outlap and make up for missing practice
I grid up on P1 and wait for the lights
Lights out and I hammer it, possibly a bit more than I should as even when I hit third it’s still spinning up the rear but no one has come past until ¾ down the track when Alex/Glen come alongside and pull ahead
I have the inside into T1 and run it in under brakes a bit deeper, thinking we’ll be rubbing fairings soon but not too worried as ours is due for paint, Alex/Glen back out slightly as they can see it turning bad if I lose it
It’s not until the left hander before the infield sweeper they pull an outside pass and go around me
They’ve got more drive off the corners and start edging away, it takes us another lap or two but we’re making any space I lose off the corners up under brakes at the hairpin and T1
Bad understeer up out of the dipper is slowing us down on the exit; we make it back up into the sweeper and then lose it again on the way out
White flag is out and we’ve closed right up on them, onto the front straight right behind them and I pretty much go blind with the amount of water coming off the back of them, I pull out to one side and chase them into T1 and are with a bike length as we exit, down to pothole and under brakes into the hairpin have the nose level with their tray before I back out
We’re on their tail under the dipper where they gain a couple of bike lengths and it stays that way until the flag, Alex taking the win and Matt and I in second
Race 2
It’s a drying track but we’ve stayed on wets as there’s still plenty of water out and spray coming off the classes before us
Alex gets a good start but we make T1 before him, we don’t stay in front very long and they pass us in the same place as last race, once they’re past us they steadily pull away and we can’t make it up, we don’t seem to have the drive off the corners that they do, we’re wheel spinning through the gears instead of hooking up
No one else catches us and we run home in second again behind Alex
Graeme/Paul spin on the infield and Paul damages his thumb and can’t do the last race so some innocent bystander is dragged into service
Race 3
Damp track in places and we’ve gone back to slicks
Alex gets the start and makes T1 in front and despite trying we can’t stay with him, there are still big wet spots on some of the corner exits and Matt needs a few more pies to get us some more traction
I’m possibly not going as fast as I could but I’m going as fast as I want to, coming onto the main straight where you’re dialling it up and starting to straighten up there are wet patches and the same off the left hander into the infield sweeper
Lap 2 and a bit of a surprise when Graeme/innocent bystander pass us down the short straight into T7 right hander, I’m thinking he’s pushing a bit hard having a novice onboard and stick with him for the next lap making sure I have enough in reserve to easily get back past him
Lap3 and T7 again and he pushes in quite hard and I’m already rolling off as he goes around in front of us and have enough room to go past the back of the their outfit and get another second behind Alex
Despite the weather another excellent day out with Race 1 being one of the best I’ve had, we’ve still got some changes to make and will be looking at our suspension set up to try and sort out some wheelspin/drive problems but we’re making good progress

Hi Everyone,
Anyone out there based in Christchurch with a sidecar outfit that you might be willing to let me have a go in the chair?
I`ve raced solo for several years in uk, and always fancied a go in a sidecar, but never had the chance.
I mean just looking for a few laps at lunch time or when your out testing etc.
Would love the opportunity.
Cheers

Well after looking in the Sidecar Road Racing Specifications, which to me seemed the likely place for rules relating to the class would be, and not finding it there I moved onto Road Racing - chapter 22; which I expected to have information that relates to each class. I can't say I consider race numbers very technical hence why I didn't read into chapter 10.

you should be familiar with the whole rule book and know what pertains to your class.
take a look at the technical section further and it mentions noise emissions, that means you'll probably have to put a gag on Drew for the weekend...

Well the Barry Sheene was an awesome learning curve, i had 3 goals in mind for my first ever race weekend (and the 1st time rding a long chair :msn-wink:), the 1st was to actually finish every race, the 2nd was not to come last and the 3rd so to set a time in the mid 1.20.
My first ride on the sidecar was on the friday and due to a few issues (me being twice the size of the previous rider ) we only managed about 3 complete laps all day as we were trying to to work out the correct lines and how to change the set up.
On saturday morning we decided that we had to respring the front end to get the bike steering correctly as with my extra weight the front was riding to low and binding up the steering, once the change was made it felt like a different bike so we went out for qualifying, and managed to set a blistering 1.39.5 putting us last on the grid :Punk: which is pretty much what i was expecting, we made a few changes for race 1 and managed to drop 8 secs and record a 1.31.4 and we didn't come last :wings:
Sunday dawned and we were feeling pretty good about the progress that we had made the day before, we lined up for race 2 having moved a couple of spots up the grid (due to rolling grids and a couple of dnfs the day before) again we didn't come last and mangaged to drop our time further to a 1.29.4, race two we had to start from pit lane along with 5 others due to not hearing the call over the PA system but still managed to drop another couple of secs down to a 1.27 flat and race 3 was about the same.
So we still have a long way to go and really need to work on getting better lines and braking later but all in all we were happy with the progress that we made over the weekend droping a total of 12.5 secs a lap and achieving all 3 goals that we set for ourselves.
Looking forward to the next one and hoping we can make more steps forward.
Thanks everyone for all your tips and advice over the weekend it really helped.

King of Ruapuna Rd 3
We’d removed the engine to give it a freshen up before Wanganui and nationals so we had to swap a few bits over between them before putting the stock motor in for this meeting and were waiting on some parts from the engineer so we could replace the drive pins and fit longer rear arms for the bigger diameter Avon rear tyres.
We were planning on sorting most of it on the Monday before the event, the first problem was we thought we could remove the modified selector shaft without taking the clutch out and we were wrong and we didn’t have a clutch holding tool on site, second problem was the engineer drove his tool post into his lathe chuck and was having to repair it before making our parts.
With Dave having a few late nights at works as well all of a sudden our time frame was reduced from having a week to do this to having one day.
I’d taken the Friday off as we’d originally planned to test that afternoon and scrub in some brakes and tyres but 5.30 on the Thursday I was just picking up the first of two lots of bits from the engineer.
Friday morning I shoot out to Dave’s with a clutch holding tool and start on it, clutch out, selector shaft out, swap the stock engine onto the bench and start swapping bits over, we’ve had the selector shaft circlip pop off before so once it’s in I give the shaft a bit of a pull and it all seems sweet.
Putting the windage tray on and I drop a spacer inside the engine, 60 minutes later I still can’t get it out, the engine had been upside down, right way up, sideways and although I can hear it rattling round inside it won’t fall out to where I can get it.
I get a call from the engineer telling me the rear arms are ready so decide to shoot off and pick them up and get my bendy magnet tool thing tool to try and dig the spacer out at the same time.
I make it home and grab the tool just in time to get a call from the engineer saying he just realised he threaded the arms for the incorrect size rose joints and they won’t be ready until later.
Another 30 minutes shaking and probing the engine and finally the spacer emerges, I get everything swapped over just the clutch side cover to go on and it’ll be sweet.
Another trip home to pick up the van and swing past the engineer to get the rear arms and back to the shed, Dave has the engine sitting beside the Sidecar ready to go in when I arrive and we lift it in and start bolting and attaching stuff.
New arms in, throttle bodies and airbox on, hook up all the plugs, fit the exhaust which is where we run into another problem, we were getting some new exhaust collars made for the slip fit exhaust into the head which couldn’t be done in time so I used some tube but once tightened up it made the exhaust sit to high so I smack those off and refit the old set.
Shorten the chain to make up for the one tooth down front sprocket and go to fire it up and it won’t start, find the earth lead we need still on the old motor and one plug I’d missed and it cranks into life, pulls peak revs and immediately gets shut down.
Throttle assembly gets pulled to bits cleaned up and lubed and cable inserted back into the proper place and it’s all good
Finally I pull out Dave’s driveway just after 11pm
I pick up some gas on the way to the track and get there just before 8am, unload and get set up, gas it up, tyre pressures checked and good to go, Grant turns up having picked up some R clips for us on the way
As we’d be scrubbing in the tyres and brakes we were going to be taking it a bit easy but after one it won’t select gears and I know the circlip has come off again, strange how you can pull the selector shaft sidecar while it’s on the bench and it won’t look like moving but one lap of the track and it pops off
With everything turning to crap throughout the week I’m about ready to pack it up and go home but after the support from the sponsors and the work put in by Dave hook into fixing it
We get it up on the stands and I start pulling the sump and windage tray off and sure enough the circlip and washer are sitting in the bottom of it
The Bucket support crew turn up to offer advice n take the piss as I piece it back together, it’s back on the ground ready to go before race 1 is called
Race 1
Lights out and Alex/Glen are lighting up the rear in front of us and Graeme/Colin have it nailed, we’re taking it bit easy due to the new brakes and tyres and after a couple of laps with Alex/Glen and Graeme/Colin having pulled away we slow up to let Pig/Goober catch up,Once they’re past we tuck in behind and follow them for a lap getting alongside and nearly running in to the back of them a couple of times, coming out of the sweeper I get a run on them down into T1 and get back in front
I start going a bit harder and they don’t come back at me and it’s not until the race has finished I find out they got a bit tired and pulled out of the race
We do a best lap 1.56.487 and the fastest for the race is Alex/Glen at 151.047
We do a spanner check in between races and adjust the chain
Race 2
We line up behind Alex again, I’m expecting him to light up the rear again and when he does I pull out right shortshift into second and pull out past him, Graeme/Colin have the hammer down and lead into T1
Alex/Glen go up the inside into the hairpin and we pass them on the way out, we swap places a couple of times until Alex decides Graeme is getting too big a lead and goes out after him
We push a bit harder but can’t keep up Pig/Goober have managed a lap more than last time before fatigue gets the better of them and they have to stop for a break
Best lap 1.55.164, Alex/Glen fastest again at 148.018
We get it back up on the stands and bleed the brakes as they feel a bit soft, can’t get the pedal up as hard as I think it should be but each time we go out the brakes seem to be getting better
Race 3
Alex decides to start off the back and I get an even better start this time out
Alex/Glen are having a bit of a play passing us and letting us back in front but once he puts the hammer down we can’t stay with him and get a bit untidy couple of times pushing a bit hard, we’ve left Graeme/Colin and Goober/Pig behind and run in second behind Alex/Glen
Best lap 01:53.772, Alex/Glen 01:48.879
Every time we go out things are better and we’re getting faster, we’ve still got a few things to change which should lead to further improvements which we will try before going to Wanganui in December

Any of the street race organising clubs would listen to you if you could guarantee a minimum of say, 10 chairs.....But there's no history of chairs on streets down here unlike oop north..
those nice empty CBD streets are also rough as a cob - when it's a park with decent roads again, the red zone area around the Avon, from bridge to bridge would work well....

a shame.. Farm boys looked to get a bit of a squirrel on, and slowed down a bit. Spike gave them a shunt in the arse for their trouble, which pitched him sideways. For good measure we then plowed into the side of Spike and Astrid, and got ourselves turned sideways. Enter Burt, who plowed into the side of us, sending us on a wee trip to upside down land again.

She's lucky she still has an armMy memory of it still has me dotting her right in the forehead. No matter how many times I watch the footage. I tried to swerve right to avoid her, but I was so hard on the picks it just started to swing round...then the bar input became moot.

If ya watch the footage from Al's camera in slow motion, you can see my leg come out of the knee cup just as Burt is remodeling the front of their outfit. We were well and truly sliding at that stage and luckily the G forces had managed to overcome my not insubstantial mass to start me moving, least that's how it looks to us.
My memory can't be trusted though, I was sure we tapped a pretty pink head with the nose. I barely even looked to see if Al was OK before I ran over to her.

I straightened and strengthened the bent front arms today, painted them when I got home and wrapped them for the courier to pick up tomorrow morning. Burt has the ali to replace the crumpled front section of the tub, got his mate with the press all jacked up to fold the sections and he tells me the fibre-glassing is under way, so good progress so far. Looks like we'll be there but it,s up to Burt now...done my bit :woohoo:

Fucking good show guys. We've got the fairings in at the shop now and have made us a start on the rest of it. Thankfully it's all steel and piss easy to work with. Although Drew is using this as another opportunity to modify it some more.

Hope all you guys & girls make it back out this weekend, sounds like you are all trying hard to make it. I think a few more nick names in the sidecar teams now, so along with the Farm boys, sponge bob , Danger Dave etc, we have flipper Drew & basher Burt. See you all on Saturday

Mate of mine was at Hampton on the weekend putting together a promo video thing for Team LP Racing.
Not enough action shots for me (sounds like the weather stopped him doing what he really wanted to do) but worth a look.
