Basically for the same reason I've decided I will no longer be riding the AGIP bike, because we're sick and fucking tired of interfering cunts telling us how fast or slow we should be going , how crap we are, how we spend to much money on motels and how we buy to many tyres and everything other little detail of our racing which is no fucking concern of theirs at all

The car engine thing really appeals to me. Its underworked in a sidecar, unlike a bike engine.

it's a shitload more work than using a bike motor - and as the rules look like easing to allow Jap multis in, it's even less attractive.

the one in the pics is obviously a new build but raises some doubts in my mind. Historically, to make the gearbox survive - usually a Norton or AMC race box - you had to run it at nearly engine speed. So start at the back wheel and run the biggest sprocket you could fit and work back from there. That one has gearing visible which will run the box quite a lot slower. Even if it's a modern repro box, I have doubts as the problem wasn't gears or shafts, the cases usually split....

I've had a pretty good two weeks. Last week at Taupo, have a go day, then the next day actually racing.

Then last night I was offered another chance to swing, this time at speedway. So I pawned off my clerk of the course job, found all my old speedway gear and raced today as well.

I have ridden and swung on a speedway sidecar before, but never raced. We did pretty average, a second and 2 thirds. But not bad for both rider and swinger having their first ride on this sidecar.

Speedway sidecars are harder work to stay on and move around (bouncing on the track, being roosted). But track sidecars are more work to actually reach the end of the race. At speedway I get to sit up and relax after a minute long race. On the track I was shattered by the last lap (more like 15 minutes).

Speedway gives more of a adrenaline rush from fear, track feels a lot safer. On the track, as a swinger, I felt that we could only ever go as fast I could lean, if I got lazy, we got slow. At speedway, I can fuck up pretty well and the rider can keep it tapped and not lose ground.

If I were to choose to actually race one, as a swinger, I'd choose track.

Who took you out on their sidecar???

Must 'ave been a pussy..... ;)

Seriously, going around the outside of someone at near 180 clicks, or up the inside underbrakes from 40 metres back and the door shuts on ya is pretty adrenaline rushy......
Lifting the sidewheel at 160kms is nice too, and only possible with a competent passenger...
If ya fuck up, it only really slows you down very marginally, and you can make it up pretty much by taking a different line into the next corner - there's pro's and con's of different lines..... especially if you block.....

I gave Speedway a go a couple years back, with my Uncle who is now creeping to the top (his 16yr old son swings for him now)

I didn't like it.
The wall didn't bother me one bit, it was the shadows of the other bikes that did my head in, not knowing where they were.
Our first start, I had no idea what I was doing. On my third attempt to grab the handle I finally got it, right before we hit turn one and finally coming down from a wheelie.
It was a rush knowing that to get around the corner, I had to 'pull' the bike. Otherwise, I felt like I was just sitting there collecting mud and hearing the grinding of the gutter.
Road is far more of a rush, being able to go both ways is fukn awesome! Holding on (or not!) against so many forces is something you just do not experience on the dirt.

Superside RKBF1

The 2.4 mile Grand Prix circuit of Donington Park in Leicestershire would be hosting the second round of the FIM World sidecar championship on British soil for the first time since 2008 over the bank holiday weekend of the 23rd to 25th May 2014.

Held along side the World superbike championship at this round the British Formula One contenders were given an opportunity to compete as wildcards. With two former World Champions and British runners Tim ReevesGregory Cluze and Ben/Tom Birchall heading the World entry list, this was an opportunity for the Eastern Airways RKB Motorsport backed British contenders to show just how strong the entries are in the home championship.

No World Championship points were to be awarded for the British Championship teams and this would be a round within a round with a podium for the British teams and half points awarded for their own series.
The dates for this are not at the best time of year due to the Isle of Man TT so a lot of the British entries would miss the chance to be at Donington and some would even have to look for different passengers.

Eight team from the from the British series took the chance to compete. Roger Lovelock and Aki Alto. Andy Peach and Charlie Richardson. Sean Hegarty and James Neave. Rupert Archer and Shelley Smithies. Craig Nicol and James Connell. Stephen Kershaw and Rob Wilson. Gary Horspole had a change of his usual partner of Paul Knapton, who was in the Isle of Man for Sandor Faber, and Craig Chaplow had another partner change of Patrick Farrance who was also in the Isle of Man for Ashley Hawes. Not a bad change for Craig one World Champion passenger for another.

Even before the free practice on Friday there was drama for Kershaw racing. Stephen Kershaw having returned this season after missing last year due to a heart operation was informed that he would need to produce a letter for the FIM organisers from his cardiologist to state that he was fit to race dispute already having competed in the first round of the British championship earlier this year. It was not until 5pm that this was resolved and the relief was clear to see on the whole team.

Friday's free practice was a very wet affair. The rain had promised to come all day and it didn't let the teams down. Several of the sidecars came out on slick tyres and within a few minutes of the session starting conditions just deteriorated and many had to change on full wet settings. The Birchall's topped the session with nine laps and a best time of 1.57 secs, followed by Lovelock and Alto and Hegarty and Neave. Although Tim Reeves was out for several laps his transponder failed so he didn't registered a time.

Saturday's first qualifying was held in dry conditions and as predicted it would be a fight between Tim Reeves/Greg Cluze and Ben and Tom Birchall who completed 11 laps with Reeves coming out on top by only 0.7 of a second from the Birchall brothers. Showing just how strong the British championship is the next three places were covered by Peach and Richardson, Hegarty and Neave and Lovelock and Alto. Kershaw racing were in seventh place followed by a superb performance in eighth from Rupert Archer and Shelley Smithies.

Conditions changed again for the second qualifying. Just as the teams lined up at the Melbourne Loop to enter the circuit the heavens opened this time with thunder, lightning and hail. Again tyres had to be changed at short notice which again eats into the qualifying time. The standing water on the circuit became so bad that only four laps were completed before the session was red flagged. Taking pole was Reeves and Cluze with a 1.54 sec lap followed by the Birchall's and Peach and Richardson. Again the British teams qualified strongly with Kershaw racing in fifth, Archer and Smithies in sixth and Lovelock and Alto in seventh.

Sunday's race day conditions couldn't have been more different. With a dry track and warm conditions a good crowd was expecting a very fast race, and they wouldn't be disappointed.
From the off Reeves and Cluze took the lead from the Birchall's and Peach and Richardson and Hegarty and Neave. With less than half a second between them the Birchall's took the lead on lap six. Hegarty and Neave kept in third place but over 4 seconds back. Not getting away from Reeves and Cluze and never having more than a second gap the Birchall's broke the lap record on lap nine with a superb 1.34.7 sec lap. Reeves made his move on lap 12 and took the lead. This lead was never more than a half a second and at the chequered flag Reeves and Cluze crossed the line less than 0.099 of a second in front of the Birchall's with Hegarty and Neave in third 24 seconds behind the winners followed by Lovelock and Alto, from Steinhausen and then Hock. The next British team home in what was a superb display from the back of the grid was Scotland's Craig Nicol and James Connell who were delighted with thier performance.
The other five British teams had retired during the race.

After the race Tim and Greg were delighted with the win, in what was a hard fought victory over the Birchall's who lead the World Championship by 4 points from Reeves and Cluze. Even at this level the other teams in the World Championship have their work cut out to stop either of them from becoming the 2014 World Champions. The two next lock horns next week at the Isle of Man TT.

Hopefully it won't be six years before another World round is staged in Britain.

This is what a broken rear suspension arm that goes from the top of the tub to the rear upright on an LCR looks like

When this part breaks as you come up out of the dipper and hit the fast left kink, the rear of the outfit snaps right and you slide down the track sideways with smoke pissing off the rear tyre thinking "oh fuck I'm going upside down", finally it spins all the way around and you come to a halt and to your surprise notice the new swinger on his try out day is still there and doesn't seem too bothered by it

Looks like damage from a flicked chain to me. Academic now though.

I wonder if stuff like this that gets seen at tech inspection, shouldn't be mandatory replacement.

Up date from Darryll Rayner & Richie Lawrance , Anzac sidecar team over at the Isle of Man as practice week is nearly finished,

Last night nearly didnt happen. We went through scrutineering all right then put the fairing on waiting for our turn. We got up onto the grid and couldnt get any gears. We pulled of to the side and pulled the seat off to find the gear lever getting stuck on the fairing. Grabbing a pair of side cutters to cut some bits away. The grid marshalls were great, saying to take our time. We finally got it back together and left something like 2 minutes after the last bike had left. I didnt have the shits. We just concentrated on what we had to do. Everything was singing along sweetly except we had the wrong gearing. We had to roll off in top to stop hitting the rev limiter. The mountain had stationary yellows for most of it due to a wet track. We rolled off considerably as it not really the nicest place to run off. We got back down to the start line line to see red flags. We were a little pissed off as we wanted more laps. The session was restarted. We took off in our normal position and tore off down Bray Hill. The lap was much smoother. The run over the mountain was still the same and we again rolled off and pulled back into the pits. We never heard that they had extended the session otherwise we would have put enough fuel in to complete 3 laps. We did 98 mph. Not too bad. The Beare Boys managed to pull out a 100mph lap. We were very excited for the boys. The engine is now out ready to put the good engine for tonights practice. We have someone coming around today to help tune the black box as we only have one map for the ECU. We have qualified for the race so we just need to improve our lap times tho get a spot on the grid further up the field.

I see you're getting back to 'normal'.

These things are not off the shelf. So anything that gets changed can be hard to make sure that nothing else then needs altered. We can't just go for a hoon down the street to make sure stuff is working, so it needs to wait till we get to a track. That's often a race meeting.

So pull your fucken head in!

Rear was apart in 10-15 minutes, so not that hard to do but the setup time after it's put back together probably adds another hour, but how often would you do it? what bits would you need to do? etc etc

The only crashes I can think of in the time I've been racing them where something actually broke and caused it were Scrivy's brake arm(short bike), Stu Prentis rear Axle(Short bike) Keith Sinclair rear axle (LCR) Mine, rear suspension arm (LCR) although I'm sure there are more

So I was looking for a place that sells good quailty metric rod ends (not that I know how the fuck you would tell the difference) and stumbled across this site http://www.mcgillmotorsport.com/metric-rod-ends-accessories-turnbuckle-linkages-metric/ so I've ordered a couple of arms which will come to $43NZD landed for the pair

The rod ends also seem to be at a good price but I'll check tomorrow what's available locally

Stripped a bit more off it today, just debating on whether to pull the motor so I can give it a decent clean, need to get the sump off at some stage anyway to get another sump, baffle and pickup made so both motors can be "plug and play" rather than having to swap bits over if I do pop one

I'm also looking at upgrading the oil catch tray to BSB specs although between engine mounts, suspension arms and radiator hoses it's got me fucked how you can make it completely oil tight

Two sidecar fatalities in Germany today, at the GP. I'm assuming that's at the world champs.

I knew Enrico Becker had died yesterday after him and Kurt Hock crashed, was Hock the other or has there been another crash

Yeah, that's them.

On Saturday, July 12, 2014, without the influence of third parties, a
serious accident the sidecar-trailer combination by Kurt Hock and Enrico
Becker occurred in the last third of the session of the Sidecar World
Championship at Sachsenring.

To secure the accident can be announced that the team with high speed in
the Saxony curve crossed the gravel and unrestrained slid into the
barriers.
Instant and immediately initiated rescue efforts could not prevent the
passenger Enrico Becker still succumbed to his injuries at the accident
site.

Kurt Hock was transferred to the Klinikum Chemnitz, where he was given
immediate medical attention.

The organizers and all participants speak of the family by Enrico Becker
from their deepest sympathy and assure their sincere condolences.

Enrico Becker was one of the most famous and successful German passenger
side of the car scene and he is the international sidecar racing missing.

Our thoughts and hopes are in this difficult time with the families of
Enrico Becker and Kurt Hock.

At the request of the family and sidecar starting grid, the race is as
scheduled on Sunday, July 13, 2014 held at 16:35 clock at the Sachsenring.
