We'll be there. If everyone shows up, will there be a qualifying cut off time? I'm fine with traveling up and missing out if we can't keep up, but it might deter some others.

There is no mention of max numbers on the safety plan,However I have a feeling it is 35,But we did discuss increasing that number for solo's to 40 for last years event,I'll do a bit more research and get back to you.

Because we like silly little bikes and have run out room to store any more.
That and the fact that the silly little bikes leave bugger all time for adult toys given we have about 15 meetings a year.

Like Henk said some of us like our little bikes and sidecars, and for some that's all they can afford. Chris Lawrence wants to use the class to encourage young people into the sport and to be a stepping stone to full size ones.
If your around Auckland in august your welcome to come out to Mt Wellington kart track and try my sidecar up against the Lawrence's , Des James, Rick and henk. Pm me if your keen.:bleh:

Finally, racing time again down South.
Come along and watch the sidecars and solos racing at Levels this weekend, bring your leathers and gear and maybe grab a lap or two at lunch on the sidecars and have a go!
Few outfits for sale in the South Island too, for those that want to get into the sport!
Harris' old black bike still on the market, last night he told me he wanted 8,500 for it... It's there for whoever wants to hand over 8.5k for it.. According to Harris, fastest short bike in NZ
The (I think Phil Garret built) long bike num 272 powered by a GSXR1000 is also back on the market after the new owner purchased it early this year... and by the time the first race has come around has decided he is no longer interested.
10.5k is the asking price but no doubt it can be had for less.. much less if the rumours about the original purchase price incl trailer are true.
I think thats it for now.
See you Saturday! Can't wait to get out there and have a play with the AGIP bike, after all the brake and suspension and bearing overhauls it should be good having a play and dialling in the brake bias, suspension and geometry and getting a feel for the bike again. I have been saving my wee paychecks (now that I am a Uni graduate with a degree and a JOB! how rare is that) and should be slapping some new tyres on the agip bike in good time. Not sure if I should do it now and run them at club days to get the feel for new tyres and hope I can afford another set later in the season.. or just buy the one set and run it at the biggest event I attend.. nats or wangas or whatever.
Also grabbed a billet machined dry sump, a nice oil pump and a nice 3.5 litre oil tank for the motor. Hopefully it fits better than the flat slide carbs did :D haha.. those by the way are still for sale - I have some 39mm flats for my motor lined up - but need to sell these first.
Chur - catch up Saturday - be there or be square Southeners!

Mint day at Timaru today, had to work til 12.30am last night this morning, slept a couple hours and out the door at 5.30am while trying not to slip on all the ice everywhere.. cruisy drive to Timaru, everyone was frozen at the track, including the track.. brrr.
Got the bike unloaded and gave it a check over, Macdonalds were there sporting brand new matching Bell helmets and some fancy new leathers - getting matchy matchy for their new LCR which is waiting for them at Lyttleton port.
Harris was there with his black Mo Haley built sporting a new R1 hot motor which he was quite proud of.
Kicked off nicely into practice session, Phil and I back on the bike for the first time since Levels nationals round in Jan. Went well, Followed Harris for the first lap and on the second lap as we entered the main straight I watched a steady amount of smoke coming from Harris bike, he clicked the next gear and the smoke got thicker as the bike pulled away. He slotted it into the next gear really hammering it down the straight unaware that the smoke pouring out of the exhaust was getting to epic proportions - Then in a big puff the hands go up and they pull off the track - She was buggered.. Nothing like oil spewing out of it and little bits of metal floating around...
That left just the Macdonalds and us. Freezing temps but we went out for a little Duel, got off the line nicely - Agip bike feeling great, we had a good battle leading majority of the race with AJ having a look on the 2nd to last lap and then again getting us just before the finish line - Still we managed a 1.24.5 lap which is 3 seconds off our previous best of 1.27 so happy with that and happy with the Agip bike. Which is still running standard motor and old tyres and so on.. the new tyres and motor work are in the pipe lines.
Race 2 and 3 were less eventful as there was a couple of niggling things on the agip bike, fairing mount welds that broke (bloody rough swingers) and so on that we couldn't repair at the track so we just pottered around and had a little play for race 2 and 3 and AJ was kind enough to slow down and have a dice with us.. nearly swapping paint a few times - bloody good fun.. just the two of us
Til next time - hope there will be more than 3 bikes...

Yea, would love more to show up, but oh well.. We try and be there every time.
Not sure what Harris is up to, When the question is put to him he says he needs to sell the black bike before he can ride the total span bike or the total span bike still needs a lot of work done.. or something along those lines.
Will be hard to sell a bike if you keep racing it and breaking it!
I think the harris engine was terminal - an awful lot of metal debris and oil floating around in there - he was quick to say he will build another motor up this week so he wasn't acting too worried.

Yip looking forward to the built motor and having a play when its back in the chassis! should be mint.. It was going pretty well at levels couple weeks ago we were quite stoked so if it pulls harder now its going to be a lot of fun I recon.
Fuckin cool.

Those Thunderace motors are quite the good donk, in the bike they came with at least, how tired could it have been to be so slow?
Grumph said something about inlet cam being damn near siezed haha.. worn cam chain too.. not sure whatelse could slow it down so much, crappy air filters (we took em off 2 weeks ago at levels..) crap wiring and ignition too.
Spare motors are not quite useable.. one has a melted cylinder and is in bits, the other has a hole in the crank case with a rod poking out.. I was really looking to pull the both to bits and maybe make 1 good one out of the two.. I think there is damage to the casing of the melted head one too.. really need a new crank case and then should have gbox, pistons, barrels and a cyl head and cams to make up a new one.. might need valves and some bits n pieces.. might have a good crank. will look into it...

We are still looking for a nice down hill track to give us the weight advantage :) we might be quicker after this build tho!

Always looking and asking around.. nothing popped up. yet.. (edit: actually those motors did pop up for sale, Grumph put me onto the fella that was selling em in ChCh, most of the bits were junk, there was 1 good FZR motor there but the prices were too high etc and the deal never went through on that one. The fully worked FZR/Thunderace motor that Bills bike originally came with from the UK was blown up in style by Speedway grant before the r1 went in. (to my knowledge)

MNZ rules say strap/ring only but I've been using a click/buckle one for ages now and has passed all event scrut. Wondered if the ratchet strap would also pass?
Its a mint helmet, a shame they didn't use a normal strap buckle..

My AGV has that system and passed scrutineering for the last two years so far. Awesome system too, easy to get on and off and no fiddly adjustment because you can just crank it up to where its tight/comfortable.

More like speedway then. I had a go riding and I was a bit harsh on the throttle (efi was race tuned and hates not being full noise) the swinger headbutted my leg a few times for a couple of laps. Weird bikes on dirt. Throttle on you go straight/left throttle off it goes sideways. Handlebars just suggest what way to go haha

fired up the rebuilt motor for the first time finally. only a few days over scheduled.
fired up pretty much straight away, fresh oil n coolant.. Sounds and feels like a different beast already - idle is different and it picks up revs a lot quicker. just idled it and gave it a couple of blips looking for leaks. So far the floor on the garage is dry as a bone as is the catch tray on the bike. Good stuff, and a previous leak it had is gone. mint.
looking forward to running it in at levels tomorrow (today)

Haha - I threw a wave up.. bit hard to aquaplane with one hand tho!! hell it was one of the wettest tracks I think I've raced on (on slicks too)

good call, tip of Mo's actual hat was done.. I have his old Agip cap which fits me nicely.
So - Levels yesterday, After working on the bike til about midnight friday night and then loading it on the trailer and packing the borrowed van, we were in bed by 12.30.. and up at 5am to hit the road to Timaaas.
Light but persistant drizzle turned into proper rain by the time we hit Timaru and the track wasn't too bad at first but definitely a few puddles down the straight and in a lot of inconvenient places like entries to corners and braking points. I don't think I have truely aquaplaned before but I have now! it was a very bizarre feeling on wide slicks.. and dodgy with the bike twice getting very close to out of control with big left and right slides/fish tails. No walls were high fived though.
We were the only sidecar to show up, with Glen showing up but Alex didn't so Glen went back to Chch due to the shite weather. The club was kind enough to give me the track all to myself to run the motor in and have a general shake down of the bike. It ran faultlessly even though it was so wet and the agip bikes wiring is all exposed to it really doesn't like the wet at all. No front mud guard either so I couldn't see f-all all day.
Practice went well, got a good few laps in to run the motor in and then race (one horse) 1 and 2 were much of the same, a couple of laps to keep running the motor in and checking for leaks or issues. Not much else happened, bugger all solos turned up either, but those that did managed to go down like flies with a couple of Ambulances needed (hopefully all OK) and one bike even had the front forks and headstock ripped clean off, must have been a biggie!
All n all a good day, good on the club and all officials/helpers who stood all day in the rain and freezing wind to let us all get some track time.
Looking forward to KOR where I am promised more than 1 sidecar will show up ;) and it should be dry weather to keep running motor in with a bit of load/traction and maybe give it a bit of shit and see how it really goes. Bike/chassis is going really nicely at the moment though - feels great, brakes are positive and does what I want it to do steering/slide wise. And the motor ran faultless but couldn't get much traction.
Til next time!
Thanks to Grumph for making the commute to check how the motor went and to check up on some solos too, good man!

So since stopping racing sidecars a couple of years ago I've got a bit fat and lazy so the obvious thing to do was to take up riding one as there's far less fitness and skill involved
A very generous friend bought the LCR I'd been racing with Dave in a bit of role reversal I've ended up in the riders seat and Dave on the side
Friday we decided to pop out to Ruapuna for a testday
First impression on climbing in was wondering why the Americans bother with waterboarding at Guantanamo Bay when they could just force terror suspects into an LCR body and have them screaming for mercy in seconds
Brake and gear levers just a little further back that I'd like but they'll do for the day, fire it up and roll out into pit lane all the while thinking what a heavy steering pig
Down into the hairpin and reaching for the nonexistent front brake lever throws me for a second, then it's on the brakes and turn it in, gassing it up on the exit for the run into the right hander and through the s bends, I take it easy for a few laps until my aching neck cant handle it anymore and pull back in
Takes the 1/2 between sessions for the neck to recover and we head back out, dialing it up a bit harder, using the brakes more and getting a bit more used to it, couple of slides through the infield sweeper but catch them easily enough, starting to nail it up out fo the dipper when Dave starts tapping me on the back so pull back into the pits, turns out after doing the right up and out of the dipper his glove got caught in the hand hold and he couldn't get back for the left
3rd and last session and I've been getting faster and braking harder so decide to crank it up a bit more but after a lap in Dave gets me to pull in as he's got his glove caught again, back out and a couple of laps in and he signals to pull back in as a water hose has popped off and we're losing water all over the place so we call it quits for the day
Need a couple of mods, brake and gear lever need to be about 10mm forward, might need some more space to get my arse into the bodywork a bit better although the team manger a bit unkindly did suggest losing a few kg might fix that
KOL this weekend so we'll see how we go:woohoo:

So we rock on up, do all the usual shit, scrutineering, riders briefing, toss on the body work and get ready to go, gear lever feels a bit funny so pop the body back off and think to my self " that would work much better if I'd put that bolt back through the linkage after adjusting it"
Out onto the track and the pensioner shoots off like he gets a gold card discount for most laps in front
We tuck in behind Kai,mainly just to admire Ella's leatherclad arse but we get a run down into the hairpin and pass them on the inside, I run a bit wide on exit and he pops back in front so I follow him through the s bends and ride around him on the infield sweeper
Dave admits to a moment of nervousness as we do this as Kai is coming out wider and getting closer to us and he's thinking he's about to get the AGIP bike smacking into his arm if he doesn't pull it up out of the way
End of lap 4 and it's time to crank it up so I give it a decent handful down the straight, push it into T1 a bit harder and get a couple of down changes and find I cant change down the gearbox any further, still got 3rd or 4th so circulate back to the pits to find the selector shaft has come adrift as the circlip inside the box must have come loose
Not going to bother pulling it to bits and fixing it at the track so we wander off for a pie and coke

Yes, apparently it can be accessed by removing the sump, well at least once the engine has cooled down and you're not dumping 4 litres of hot oil over yourself

Kicks run down was about the jist of it.
We drove up to ChCh after work on Friday - good road mission with lots of McDonalds, ice creams, loud music and even a flash R35 GTR (don't think I'd seen one in the flesh yet)
A good nap when we arrived and off to the track in the morning, first dry day with the new/rebuilt motor. Ella was looking a bit nervous so I decided not to overload her with info and just said. Move left and right with the corners and hang on. She told me to go slow.. I tried..
Practice was cruisy, I went half throttle(ish) and just tried to be as smooth as possible.. bit of an ask for me really. Ellas seemed to have fun, Warwick had his hand up and we thought he was just tired after a couple of laps but asyou know - lost his gear selecting ability. A bit of a shame really as I was hoping to have 4 bikes playing with each other.
Race 1 I went a bit harder than prac, Harris was next to follow with "issues" as he has a push button gear change setup with no ignition cut/retarder etc.. he also made the fueling really rich for some reason he recons (more power) so yea.. we hardly saw him except for race 2 where he blasted past us down the straight and took a 2nd place. the old total span bike does look fast in a straight line at least.
Race 2 I went a bit slower as Ella felt a little sick after race 1.. bit of a body shock. So we cruised around a bit easier left Alex and Harris to play, I think Alex was well ahead by the end of the race. Race 3 I gave it a bit more shit and we played with Alex for the whole race, swapped places a few times and some good side by side corners with not much room for error! good fun, we crossed the line side by side.. We may have even been a whisker ahead (no idea where results or lap times are for sidecars.. they neglected us a wee bit with the lap times on the day)
Good day all n all. Alex recons he could not pull in the agip bike on the straights so our motor appears to pull very strong after Grumph touched it with his magic stick. Only minor issue is overheating but that is probably air in the cooling system or something minor (hopefully)
all n all, a bloody good fun day and Ella seems to have th bug and wants to race again ASAP.

For the tri series? havent even looked at dates. Bike is already in the north island..
it would be possible if I dont have to take time off work.. it is extreemly hard to get time off work. They havent even confirmed wangas/xmas leave for me yet and I applied a month or so ago

And then some bro!
We've got a test day next week, to try out our latest mods and a right hand track. We've not ridden a right hand track, so I'm glad we made the front end more complaint.
We're doing at test day on the 4th of october at puke which will be interesting learning a new chair haha

Sweet day at levels today, drive up from Dunedin was cruisy, good old picture perfect sunrise in the early morning.
Got to the track and did a quick oil and filter change, and found a coolant leak - which will be why it was steaming and overheating at 'puna.
Looks like one of the metal pipes at the back of the cylinder head, must have some o-rings where it goes into cyl head, was leaking around there. Quick run to the gas station to get some stop-leak.
Chucked the stop leak in, filled up the coolant and got ready for practice, Warwick and the Macdonalds turned up which was nice, 2 LCRs lookin' good.
Prac was good, thing spewed up some coolant over the back wheel which got us a bit sideways coming off the back straight and got a flag out too so we pitted in, only did 2 or 3 laps. Alex was going well as was Warwick.
Back in the pits couldn't see any more leak at idle anyway but it was still dropping coolant from somewhere - figured its out of the overflow tank so we just carried on to race 1, took it easy. Alex went off like a rocket but no transponder so no lap time. Means he had to do it again. I think Wazza spun out on the warm up lap maybe? or was that during practice.. I forget. Phil tapped me a few times like we were losing coolant again, but we finished the race.
Race 2 went a bit quicker, had a bit of fun and Alex did a 1.17 and Warwick a 1.24. Still got a tap or two from Phil though. Last race was good, We had battery problems so couldn't fire up until our 5 min call... which never came in the last race, next thing we see the LCRs out for the warmup lap so we fire it up off the jumper leads, seat screwed back on (painfully slow with 4 long allen screws to mount it. And way we go, start from pit lane. not bad, LCRs a bit too far away from the start but we didnt really lose them too much over the sprint race, I think we did 1.27 flat and Warwick a 1.25.something as fastest in that, alex a bit quicker 1.21 I think for at least one of the laps. we could still see em at least. Got lapped in the first race haha
Good day all n all.. still got to stop the coolant spewing out, but wasn't overheating really so I'm happy, pulls nice! good motor hehe, apart from the coolant going on the tyres

King of Levels Rd 4
KOL rd 1 didn’t go so well with not making it past practice due to a gear selection problem with a circlip inside the gearbox coming loose and letting the selector shaft move sideways on the start of lap 5 of practice so the aim was to have that sorted and make the last Timaru round
Wednesday night when we were due to fix it the power was out due to the winds so Thursday night with the power back on it was out to Dave’s place for a night in the shed
He had the catch tray off and oil drained when I got there so I took the sump off to find the circlip and washer in the bottom of it, looking up through the bottom of the engine I could see where it should be but not get it back on
Easiest way was to remove the oil pickup to get more room, once that was out of the way it was accessible with circlip pliers, with the clip back on there seemed to be a bit much sideways play but it was going to have to do for now
Progress was halted for the night by a lack of gasket sealant but with putting the sump and catch tray back on only being a few minute job we left it for the night
Friday night it’s bolted back together and just checking the sump plug when it strips
“Oh bother” I say, luckily enough Dave has a helicoil kit from his days as full time Kawasaki destruction tester and with the sump back off it’s quickly fixed
Buttoned back up, oil in and we run it up on the stand to make sure it’s selecting gears ok, all seems sweet so a quick bolt check to finish off and find a snapped off bolt in the rear cush drive
Another 30 minutes and one more stripped bolt has that problem fixed then it’s loaded and ready to go
Practice
The gear lever still isn’t quite right for me and is too far up my foot so I not changing gears as well as I’d like and although we’ve modified the left kneeler I can’t hit the brake as hard as I want to
Massive oversteer at the hairpin which turns to understeer and back to oversteer despite trying a few different lines we don’t quite get it sorted and find a nice way around there
Best practice time 1.29
Race 1
I turn into the hairpin on the warm up lap not even going that fast and get a small slide which I start to correct then it suddenly snaps into a big slide and we run off the inside onto the grass, slowly pull back onto the track and continue on to grid up
I get an ok launch but Alex gets an even better one and I follow him through T1/T2 and onto the back straight, straight-line speed there doesn’t seem to be anything in it, I miss 4th gear and he pulls a couple of bike lengths and starts edging away
Alex is trying to set a good time on his new bike and has the hammer down, Kai is having problems and is somewhere behind us, I’m trying different lines through different corners treating it as a practice
We’ve finally got the hairpin sorted and not having the oversteer problem as Matt has changed his technique, I’m missing a heap of gears
A few laps into it and I can see I’ll have a chance of lapping Kai bit my forearms and shoulders are getting pretty tired and I’m struggling to turn into the decreasing radius
Alex has got past Kai and we’re pulling them in but they make it over the line 3-4 bike lengths ahead of us
Best lap 1.25
Race 2
Alex lets Kai up onto P1, we get a far better start and I make T1 ahead of Kai, I’m starting to gas it up earlier and a bit harder, gear selection is getting better and I’m using the brakes a bit harder, Alex slows up and I can see him touring right up until we catch him then the gas goes on again
He’s on the inside onto the back straight and we’ve both got it pinned, straight-line speed is the same and we’re side by side but he goes in a bit deeper under brakes and starts pulling away for the win and he does a best lap of 1.17 some 5 seconds faster than he was on the old bike
Best lap 1.24
Race 3
Pretty much a carbon copy of race2 with Alex slowing up a bit to play for a few laps before buggering off for the win
Best lap 1.25
All in all a pretty good day and it’s given us a benchmark to work from, there’s a few things that need changing, gear lever, brake lever and left kneeler although they’ve been changed still need more work and I might even have to do a bit of work on my shoulder and arms
Thanks to CV success, Whitfield factor and Straight and Paint for their support and team manager and sidecar owner Joanne Van der Westhuzien for the opportunity to have a go at riding her LCR and for the pies

It wasn't wet enough for full wets at Taupo. Grip levels were pretty good, I was just off line and tried to do skid anyway. Brain fade mate, nought to do with conditions.
Cup holders are still dodgy in the truck, it's getting the heater working I need to sus out.
