Good to learn there are different classes. Don't think we'll be going straight into the deepest end, like Isle of Man TT. Although it would be great to get to the Paeroa street races and the like.
Is there a website or link that might give an overview of the sport as far as NZ?

Modern - F1 and F2
theres also a pre '82 class starting up which will run with the moderns I think.

I don't think the girl on girl action Kai had planned had anything to do with the sidecar

Keith not sure on his last name.
Mr Keith Sinclair. Currently races a classic sidecar. He owned the ex-Spike long bike that Des currently races.
The shorty used to be the Lawrance Bros sidecar they won the title on in '93 with a GSX1100 hotrod engine in it. (Used to be Leppard and Goodins bike). Then they re-powered it with a GSXR1100WP. Then Keith got it and has almost finished putting a late model ZX10 engine into it. Needs a little finishing off.

Is that because Modern F2 are not raced much in NZ, or because there is a slow turnover?
It may be different for sidecars, I'm thinking about my 2 wheeler. She's '97 and starting to cost me more to keep on the road.

A good Classic is as fast as midfield Moderns depending on the track
Start in whatever class you think you'll like the most, not sure on what you'd get a F2 for like most things it depends on availibily, age, condition, spare parts
Pate's F1 as a roller he's asking 6k for, so for between 8-10k you'd have a pretty good bike

Pates roller with blown engine sounds a bit of a handful for me, neither of us are mechanically minded (although I'm guessing that will have to change).
Aside from bike length, what's the difference between a shorty and a long bike? I assume the long bike is good on the straights, and the short bike is good in corners. Do they both compete in the same races?
The F2 in Aus could be an option too.

Yep you'll have to learn some mechanical skills as there are very very few parts that you can buy off the shelf of these things, all modern F1 & F2 bikes run together so really it comes down to weather you want to get 600 or 1000 either way you'll be racing the same group of guys & girls at every meeting. The main difference between long and short is in a long bike the engine is behind the rider and they are all 1000cc engines and in a short bike the rider is leaning over the top of the engine and (in NZ) these range from 600cc up to 1300cc(?)

We aren't ready to make an offer just yet. Still lots of research to be done (such as actually having a go ourselves!!). Currently we have no feel for the comparative value of bikes.
We seem to have found someone keen to be our mechanic, who's too shit scared of these machines to ride or swing.

No idea, I've never raced it cause it has a faulty motor. Chassis feels nice on the few laps I have done. It should really have a 600 in it and is a project bike really. It's a Windle F2 with interesting history. 5th/6th at the IOMTT in the late 90s I think, got some history written down somewhere.
Other bike is a Mo Haley built shorty.. Could go on all day 'bout it but others on here know it better. 3rd at Bathurst, NZ champ, built in the 80s. Heaps of fun to ride.

Not sure yet, just cuts out after a few laps, sometimes it starts to run rough then slowly dies other times its just died randomly after a few good laps. have swapped a lot of parts over and checked out loom as much as possible to try fix it. Might be able to try Kicks cam and crank angle sensors soon.. After that not too sure what its problem might be.

Sell the Agip bike, and buy an entire wrecked R1. That way you will get everything you need to get it sorted, and have a spare motor.
Plus you should end up with some cash to race with for a while...
Or I'll give you $5000 for the Windle, and you can console your enormous loss by going out and riding lots.

Mmm.. it is an option (first I'd have to actually sell the agip bike, no doubt easier said then done) that I have thought about but nah.. I don't even like the R1 motor, certainly not that generation one (if it ran) so I don't want 2 of them.. I think if I'm going to keep it then eventually it will have to have an engine swap to older GSXR1000 or a new 600.. One thing I learnt quickly for me after buying the windle is racing is a lot more fun for me if its cheap as possible.. everyone wants to win sure, but when you can only eat 2 min noodles and can't go out etc cause all your money is pouring into the bike (and its still no where near enough money that is required) then I lose interest veeery quickly. Motor is also not even properly mounted in the chassis, its on the piss.. among other things. Never mind, live and learn.
Or I'll give you $5000 for the Windle, and you can console your enormous loss by going out and riding lots.
Haha.. for 5 grand I'll polish and paint it and just put it inside as a piece of art - paintings of naked fat women sell for more..
Anyways - I'm in no rush for anything, If I don't race either bike for a while then the bank will slowly fill up again and maybe in a year-ish I can get back into it.. (and yes, the problem with letting things sit for years is that you then get to pour even more money into them to get em going again! so don't remind me ;) )

Probably a good call. A few hundred posts ago you displayed a real passion for the Agip bike which IMO needs to carry on. You've done so much to it to return it to it's former glory and it would be a shame to just let that go, but then I could be called a bit of a soft cock when it comes to that sort of thing (bit of an opening there for you Scrivy )...after all I've been racing the Matchy for 26 years now. Sooner or latter there'll be a pre '89 or postie class Agip will be eligible for and you'll be in. How old is it? Just needs someone to get stuck in and organise such a class....anyone you know? Good that Ella is keen...we need another nice arse on a chair

The windle handles very nicely and when it did run properly it ran really well, At first we thought it was the fuel pump at fault but after trying 3 different set ups at the HAGD we realised that it wasn't the pump so then we thought maybe the fuel tank breather was too small causing a vacum in the tank so we fitted a larger breather hose but never got the chance to test it before selling to Kai, The only other thought we had is it could be a heat related electrical issue as in when it gets warm (it took about 2-3 laps of taupo short track for us) it would start missing and feeling as though it was running out of fuel in the top half of the rev range (when under load) as soon as you pulled off the track it would still idle and rev out fine in neutral but put it back in gear and it won't rev out at all which makes me think something electrical is getting too warm and then starts to break down.
I think the best option would be to throw the R1 motor away (sell it on Trade Me would be better than actually throwing it away :niceone:) and fit a nice 600cc motor then go out and have some fun.

You yourself said that we need more sidecars out there, and now you have taken 2 and hidden them away in your garage.
There are many sidecars out there being raced by not their owners. Bert has Stu's, the beemer had been passed around so much nobody knows who owns it, Scrivy had Phils (he could do with another to play on) theres about 25 bucket sidecars being let out to wreck on Saturday. And Chris is letting me run his long chair while he is on holiday.

Back in 2001 we did 1.49 on Battletruck (320kg) with a lightly modified GSX1100 and I thought it had a little bit more in it so I don't find it hard to believe that AGIP could do that

Easily, yip Phil and I did 1.55 on old old tyres and pre rebuild of motor.. Def go faster on it next time it sees puna. Ha newish rear on it which hooks up nicely and grumph has since rebuilt motor and dialled it in, we knocked 2 secs off pb at levels after that but havent given puna a good go yet.. [B]Friday Practice
Last time I was at this track riding was not long after it opened and although I’d been back a couple of times hadn’t been out on the track at all, I get set up in the pit shed and tempt Alex to the darkside by sharing it with us
After a txt from Matt I borrow Tim’s Ute and head off the airport
We weren’t pushing it at all and took a few sessions just to learn the track, getting a good line and run out of T1 seemed pretty important to carry the speed up through the next couple of corners and we had bad understeer out of T5 which was costing us drive and the track seemed pretty slippery
I was finding it hard to pick a good line through T4 and the middle of the chicane as it’s difficult to see through the corners but by third practice and trying some different lines we’ve slowly sped up throughout the day
Matt is moving out a bit early in the lefts and unsettling the bike under brakes but a quick chat and we have that sorted
End of practice and we did a brake fluid change and fitted a new chain (Thanks to Steve at WOT Motorcycles for the lend of the chain riveter) and gave the Sidecar a bit of a look over
Saturday
Practice first up and it’s feeling ok, still got understeer out of T5 and wriggling around under brakes but we finish the session on a best lap of 01:52.852 which places us 7th.
I notice the Barry/Robbie sidecar puffing a bit of smoke but they don’t seem to concerned when I mention it to them
A few people are commenting on Alex/Tim and them sliding around under brakes and when we check the brake temperatures find it has far to much rear bias which is then adjusted
Qualifying and we roll out onto the track and dial it up a bit harder, at the end of the session we’ve improved our times to 01:49.186 and move up a spot to grid 6
Race 1, 8 laps
I’m lighting it up too much off the start but get away ok, I can stick with the main group for a lap or two but slowly get dropped off
I see Barry/Robbie parked on the infield after T1 which indicates they’re having a bad day
Coming off the bottom corner into the big fast left up the hill I can feel the back squirming around on the verge of sliding as we head up into the right onto the old track
We’re quick enough to drop off the guys behind us but not stay with the guys in front so it’s a lonely 8 laps until the flag with a 5th place finish and a best lap of 01:47.382
In the Barry/Robbie pit ares they’re doing an engine change as the problem which saw them parked on the infield is terminal
Race 2, Sunday 8 laps
I get an Ok start and arrive at T1 in time to see Barry/Robbie and Burt/Neville have a coming together which sends Barry/Robbie off the track out into the kitty litter
Burt/Neville make a good recovery and we’re right behind them when they decide to ride straight ahead and off the track at T9
We have Bruce/Jim on the 600 all over the back of us looking for a way past but are slowly dropping them off
About a third of the way through the race and Barry/Robbie having got back on track come past trying to make their way back towards the front of the pack and at different bits of the track I can see that Burt/Neville are reeling us in
Chasing Barry/Robbie down the straight and they go straight on a bit far before turning into the chicane and I go back past them, they’re back in front again before T2 and pulling away
We spot Alex/Tim parked off the side of the track having had a conrod find its way out the front on lap 6 as they came onto the back straight while running in second
Burt/Neville come past us and we finish in 5th behind them
It’s all hands on deck in the MacDonald pits as probably 8-10 different people help Alex/Tim at one stage or another to get an engine swap done in time for the next race and it’s in and fired up with one race to spare
Race 3, Sunday 8 laps
Pirate/Darren jump the start and have to push back to their grid and then when the lights go out I get my worst start, being pretty much last off the line but get back past Bob/Jason and Bruce/Jim before T1
Barry/Robbie have made a crap start as well and are just in front of me, they quickly start pulling away and a couple of corners later go past Burt/Neville
Lap 4 and Alex/Tim blow another motor in the same spot and the race is red flagged so someone can put the fire out
Tim uses up the onboard extinguisher and then grabs one off the Marshall as the Marshall seems to be having a problem operating it
We head back to the pits until they decide it’s a restart for 4 laps
New Track Record (1:37.277) for Sidecars by Spike Taylor/ Astrid Hartnell
Restart 4 laps
We’re gridded up in finish order of the first half so I’m in a different spot on the other side of the track
Barry/Robbie are basically doing a push start due to a clutch problem which sees them last away
Our start is probably the best we’ve had for the weekend and we’re through T1 in 3rd but Barry/Robbie are already going past us before we’ve done ½ a lap
We hold Burt/Neville out for about a lap then they go through as well and start pulling a gap and we end up riding around by ourselves for a the next couple of laps until the flag
New Track Record (1:36.137) for Sidecars by Barry Smith/ Robbie Shorter
Overall a fairly good meeting for us with no real problems for us and finishing 5th overall

Have to get that from Burts son Ricky but I think they were going to send a stick to Kev @ Kiwibiker to put on their Facebook page.
I'd not take that offer of a bed at that Scrivy fullas place if I was you...he'd beat Tina and Tracey to a shafting or fisting and it wouldn't be pretty :laugh:<_<
Apparently I'VE got to shout some piss for that mistake...WASN'T ME THAT TURNED IT ROUND... but I must admit to telling Burt to get on the brakes a bit latter. But then on the Matchy there is a hell of a lot more opposite lock to be had when things go sideways. These modern things SUCK in that department!

With clear blue skies qualifying for the 2014 FIM Sidecar World Championship got under way.
First on track were the Birchall Brothers Ben and Tom, they had a trouble free session coming into pit lane to make small adjustments to their "Mitchells of Mansfield" LCR, Suzuki, and a tyre change, they were to set the second fastest time of 2'10.325.
Setting the fastest time however was Jorg Steinhausen and Axel Kolsch on their "Steinhausen Racing " LCR, BMW, they set a time of 2'08.206. They too had a trouble free session, but Jorg did say " I think a wheel balance weight on the front might be rubbing on the brake calliper, we will need to check this, but it is not a big problem."
Setting the third fastest time were Kurt Hock and Enrico Becker on their "Hock Racing" LCR, Suzuki, although third, the team were not very happy how things went, Enrico said "the lap times are slower than last year, and we did not feel happy in the way the bike was handling on track, we will get this problem sorted for tomorrow though"
2012 champion, Tim Reeves with passenger Gregory Cluze, back after taking a year away from the championship, set the fourth fastest time of 2'13.827 on their "The Relocater" LCR, Kawasaki. They encountered problems though when the drive chain failed, leaving them with only three laps compleated.
Fifth fastest time went to the Finnish pairing of Petri Makkula and Harri Asumaniemi on the "Team Makkula" LCR, BMW, the pair had no problems with their machine but driver Petri said "I am a bit rusty!! I missed some gears, but this was me and not a problem with the bike, tomorrow will be better"
Sixth place went to Janez Remse and Jamie Biggs on their "Remse Racing" LCR, Yamaha, the team were very happy with how things went, and hope all goes well tomorrow.
Seventh place went to Uwe Gurck and Manfred Wechselberger on their "Polizei Sport Verein Wels" LCR, BMW, with a new bike to the team they were happy with the days performance.
Eighth place went to Jacob Rutz and Thomas Hofer on their "Team Rutz" LCR, Yamaha with a time of 2'20.092.
Weather tomorrow is to be better, and temperatures up on today. All the sidecar teams will be hoping for better times for their grid positions for Sundays race.

Second place on the grid goes to Jorg Steinhausen and Axel Kolsch on their “Steinhausen Racing” LCR, BMW. The gap between them and the Birchalls is only 0.076. Jorg said “I am very happy with the bike, we were a bit low on fuel on our last fast lap, so we could not push so hard for the faster time, but I am very happy”
Starting from third spot on the grid will be Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze, on their “The Relocator” LCR, Kawasaki, they set a time of 2’08.373. Tim said “I am really happy today, after the problem we had yesterday, and only completing three laps, today is really the first session for us. The bike felt good and it is really the first time we have tried the Kawasaki engine in anger” Gregory too was very happy saying “ it is good to be back after having a year away from the sport, and really good to be on the front row of the grid”.
Starting the second row of the grid and in fourth spot will be Kurt Hock and Enrico Becker on their “Hock Racing” LCR, Suzuki. The team opted to change their engine after yesterday’s session, after finding it down on power. They set a time of 2’08.697. Sitting next to them in fifth spot is the Finnish team of Petri Makkula and Harri Asumaniemi on their “Team Makkula” LCR, BMW, they set a time of 2’13.610. Petri said “the bike is fast and going well, it is up to us to get it right now” with a grin on his face!!

Next to them in the middle of the third row is Bennie Streuer and Geert Koerts on the “Team Streuer” LCR, Suzuki. They improved a great deal on their times from yesterday, but Bennie said “I am not happy with the speeds we are doing, we will have to see if there is a problem with the machine before tomorrow’s race”.
With a time of 2’15.171 and in eighth place is Uwe Gurck and Manfred Wechselberger on their “Polizei Sport Verein Wels” LCR, BMW, they had problems with the gearbox on their machine so will need to change an engine before tomorrow’s race.
Heading the fourth row is Janez Remse and Jamie Biggs on their “Remse Racing” LCR, Yamaha. They had no problems with their machine and are looking forward to the race tomorrow.
Next to them is Mike Roscher and Anna Burkard on their “Roscher Hanni Racing” LCR, BMW,” the bike feels good and going well, we hope we can go well in the race” said Mike.
Philippe Gallerne and Julien Chesneau on their “Team Gallerne” RCN, Suzuki, were having problems with power, and Philippe had some problems with a heat shield not doing its job properly in yesterday’s session.
The race will be over fifteen laps and will start at 15.50 local time. If the weather stays good it will be a hard race for all teams.

With the sun blazing down and the temperatures in the high thirty's. The lights went out for the start of the FIM Sidecar World Championship. It was Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze who got the whole shot into the first corner on their "The Relocater" LCR, Kawasaki, second to them was Jorg Steinhausen and Axel Kolsch on their "Steinhausen Racing" LCR, BMW. On the outside of them was the Birchall Brothers on their "Mitchells of Mansfield" LCR, Suzuki. Right on the Birchall Brothers was Jacob Rutz and Thomas Hofer on their "Sidecar Racing Team Rutz" LCR, Yamaha. On the inside to Rutz and Hofer was kurt Hock and Enrico Becker with their "Hock Racing" LCR, Suzuki. Hock and Becker made a move on Rutz/Hofer straight away climbing up the hill from the start, they made it stick, and gave chase to the leading trio. Rutz and Hofer then had to contend with Uwe Gurck and Manfred Wechselberger on their "Polizei Sport Verein Wels" LCR, BMW.
Going into the first turn on lap one, three teams got all tangled together, all coming to a halt side by side, the teams all franticly trying to untangle their machines it was Bennie Streuer and Geert Koerts on their "Streuer Racing" LCR, Suzuki, who emerged back on track, it was short lived though as exiting turn three they had to pull off track with damaged body work, they would not restart. Nearly one and a half minutes had passed after Streuer/Koerts got going from the incident when Petri Makkula and Harri Asumaniemi on their "Team Makkula" LCR, BMW, got back on track, they had a lot of time to make up to try and catch the other teams. Unfortunately for the other team in the incident, Janez Remse and Jamie Biggs on their "Remse Racing" LCR, Yamaha, were unable to restart and had to watch the race from the sidelines.
At the front of the race Steinhausen and Kolsch managed to get by Reeves and Cluze and tried to make a break, but Reeves and Cluze were right with them, and right on their tail was the Birchall Brothers Ben and Tom. By lap three The Birchall brothers passed Reeves/Cluze and gave chase to Steinhausen/Kolsch. By lap five the Birchalls were right on the tail of Steinhausen/Kolsch and managed to get by. When the brothers Ben and Tom were in front there was no stopping them. They started to pull a good gap on Steinhausen/Kolsch, and were not to be troubled for the rest of the race. They were to take the chequered flag for the win with a good gap of 8.398 over the second place team of Steinhausen and Kolsch.
Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze battled away but could not stay with the leading pair; they fought hard and were rewarded with third place. Catching Reeves/Cluze towards the end of the race was Hock and Becker, they had worked hard all through the race but just could not get in tow with Reeves and Cluze, they crossed the line in fourth place. On the slowing down lap they had to be pushed back to the holding area with lack of fuel.
Fifth place would go to Gurck and Wechselberger, they had a good battle with Rutz and Hofer, swapping places towards the end of the race, but on lap twelve, Gurck/Wechselberger made the pass stick for the fifth place, leaving Rutz and Hofer taking the flag for sixth place.
A delighted Mike Roscher and Anna Burkard on their "Roscher Hanni Racing" LCR, BMW, were to cross the line in seventh place, it was a hard race for them but with no problems with their machine they were very happy.
French team Philippe Gallerne and Julien Chesneau were to cross the line in eighth place, they were happy to have good points for their championship. They hope they can get some more power from their machine before the next race.
Makkula and Asumaniemi battled hard all through the race after their first corner excursion, but with Makkula starting to get cramp in his right leg, the chequered flag was a great relief for the team. They were to take ninth place.
