NZ Pre '76 Classic Sidecar For Sale!!

Max Wallace has listed his pre '76 Coventry climax outfit on Trademe.
$6000 with the trailer or $4500 on its own (it dosent say that on the ad, but I asked him), which is fantastic value for money.
Its a reliable little unit & im picking the engine would respond well to a bit of tuning.

Nope, nothing to do with Imps. NZ Fire Service used these and a larger (980cc I think) on portable water pumps. This originally was built by John Anderson for the Chapman brothers from Wiauku. Bruce Chapman bought another engine off me about 13 years ago as a spare (I've still got the magneto off it if anyone wants one) and 'borrowed' a Cosworth cam off me to get a hotter cam made for the Climax to the same specs...never seen it since:facepalm: Don't think Max got the spare engine when he bought the outfit though.

I just sold the spare ex Dave Annan van I had to Craig Seddo, (red GS1000 pre '82) so he can sell you a few bits if you want. The Dave engine & box is mint, but the rego was dead.

Plenty of Vans as big as that

We had a race meet at levels on the weekend, both me and Goober had new passengers on, Kai had the Windle out, Grant/Matt rode the Agip and Graeme Harris had the Chivo bike there

Race 1 Goober was doing his best to put his new passenger off sidecars for life to the point I went and told him he was riding like a cock and after that it all got better and we had some fun except for one sidecar which dropped oil on a couple of corners and managed to fuck a lot of people off, had a word with him to and told him it wasn't good enough

Of course me and my new swinger won 3 out of 3 although I thought Goober might get the last one until his swinger moved a bit early on the decreasing radius and ran them off the track

Carl Cox Motorsport

Carl Cox Motorsport is please to announce that our New Zealand based Formula 1 Sidecar team, consisting of rider Barry Smith, Passenger Robbie Shorter and Manager Gavin Sokolich have secured an entry for the inaugural Formula 2 World Trophy event, to be held in Oschersleben, Germany over the weekend of August 21st -24th this year.

This event is a draw-card on the calendar as part of the festivities surrounding the FIM German Speedweek, and runs alongside a round of the World F1 Sidecar championship and multiple classes of two-wheeled championships.

For our class, the meeting will consist of unofficial practice on Aug 20th, followed by timed practice/qualifying on Aug 21st, and 2 x championship races scheduled for Aug 22nd.

This is an incredible opportunity for the team to take the NZ flag to the European stage- we have managed to secure a solid 600cc bike to enable us to compete against what will, without doubt, be an incredibly fast field of some of the world’s most established teams.

All of us here at Carl Cox Motorsport are incredibly excited and thankful to those assisting us with the task of travelling to the Northern Hemisphere in order to compete in this event- It’s a new world for us, a long way from home, and we’ll do our best to keep you posted on all aspects of the event and our progress as we go…

Updates on our European adventure will be posted to the official Carl Cox Motorsport Facebook page, along with www.carlcoxmotorsport.com or follow us on twitter @ccxmotorsport

A massive thanks to all our supporters that made our first year in New Zealand such an exciting season, we look forward to seeing you when we get back in time for the next Kiwi summer of racing, commencing at the Barry Sheene @ Hampton Downs in October.

Now at levels a couple of weekends another sidecar dropped oil, I know, I know hard to believe but it happened, we are now trying to get the guys here to adopt the FIM standard or as close to it as possible because after this year, Paeroa, Taupo and Levels we're not exactly flavour of the month

These rules take it a few steps higher than what we already have and to a higher standard than the current Bristish rules and I think it's what we should be aiming for

14. OIL & COOLANT REGULATIONS
(These are based on the latest FIM Sidecar World Championship Regulations)

a)In the area directly below the engine, the oil containment tray shall be constructed to hold, in case of an engine breakdown the total oil
and engine coolant capacity used in the engine (min. 5 litres). It must be securely affixed to the chassis.

Please note: - the catch trays will be checked at Technical Inspection and must hold the required 5 litres (when tested with water). The tray must also be of a robust nature
fit for racing (not made up of tape and glue) Any rider/machine found to be depositing oil on the circuit will be recalled to Technical Inspection for checking. If
the bike is found not to conform to the regulations the rider will be excluded from the meeting.

b) The surrounding edges of the tray shall be at least 170 mm above the bottom of the tray.
Any passages for chain, chain tension device, gears hift linkage etc. must be sufficiently closed with rubber sealing bellows or sealing lips to avoid any leakage of oil spray. Holes
for engine mounts (hangers) shall be sealed.

c) This tray should incorporate a maximum of two holes of 25 mm in diameter and be closed with rubber plugs. These holes shall remain closed in dry conditions and only opened
when ‘wet’ race conditions have been declared by the Clerk of the Course.

d) The frontal edge of the oil bay reservoir wall shall be extended upwards to arrive just below (within 20 mm) the exhaust ports of the engine.

e) From a vertical view, the engine block shall be located completely inside the oil bay platform.

f) The rear wheel shall be protected from any possible oil-spray. To make this protection, the engine and the rear wheel compartment shall be separated.

This separation shall be created by installing a solid divider (wall).

This wall reaches from the top of the inside of the fairing and shall overlap the rear edge of the oil tray to the rear section by at least 100 mm.

An additional overlapping of at least 50 mm must be installed to the inside of the catch tank in the area behind the cylinder head.

g) All sidecars shall attach oil absorbent materials of no less a quality than 3M Product number 05656 or CEP Sorbents/ product numberCEP-EP100.

h) This material shall be securely fixed to the following areas of the sidecar:
– The entire tray, both the bottom and inside walls of the same. The volume of material used in this area, according to manufacturer’s specifications, shall absorb
not less than 3 litres of oil.
– The material shall be attached in such a way that it should be easily replaced, yet shall not become dislodged whilst on the track, and its effectiveness is not
inhibited, i.e. if an adhesive is used it shall not clog the material, causing it to lose its absorbent properties.
– In the event that oil is absorbed by the material,it shall be replaced before the next track session.
i)
All absorbent material used, shall be non-flammable by design.

total oil and engine coolant capacity used in the engine (minimum 5 litres).
• The surrounding edges of the tray must be at least 50mm above the bottom of the tray, measured vertically from the tray Oil containment
material must be fixed to this tray and the sides.
• The frontal edge of the oil tray wall must be extended upwards to arrive just below (within 20mm) of the exhaust ports of the engine. The rear
face of the tray should be to the height of the swinging arm and the minimum width should be equal to the width of the rear tyre.

Was Barry Fane being a retard at Paeroa? was Alex being a retard at Taupo?

Barry Fanes wasn't an oil tray containment issue, it was a split remote mounted oil cooler from a collision. Hardly anything that could be foreseen to be an issue. But it can be controlled to an extent with the addition of some mat around the fairings. The poor cunt could probably have accidents every race for the rest of his life and never split that oil cooler again. I don't know what happened with Alex.

The comment re retardation was more about people using plastic bungs in unused engine case holes, garden hose as oil lines etc.

The other thing that needs to be addressed is this -

"10.13 For sealed surface competition, all crank cases, gear box, oil drain and breather tubes open only into a catch tank, i.e. a plastic bottle or suitable container to catch oil and oil mists."

I take that as no breather into the airbox, which most long bikes don't comply with as the crankcase breather goes vertically straight up into the airbox.

10.13.3 For Championship road races and endurance road races of more than 55 minutes – any breather pipes that come out of engines or transmissions must discharge into the heat resistant catch bottle. The breather pipe’s must be of a clear reinforced translucent material and be visible to the rider in a riding position.

Two things... is it for all championship road races.. or only those of more than 55 mins??? A bit ambiguous...

Always been quite clear - there's an and in the middle so it's both cases...this rule came in at pretty much the same time the first long bike appeared but as i remember there was no mention of a problem at the time. A clarification for long bikes could have been done....

we have of course had a conflicting situation here before...at the WSB rounds, FIM regs insisted on the airbox being the catch tank. Not a problem IMO, sound solution.

I'd suggest that the sidecar association put up a remit permitting airboxes to be used as catch tanks on chairs - maybe even for everything as i'd doubt if many solos comply now....Bikes with no airbox should still require the catch tank as worded now.

No, I did think about that, I want to heat some up and see if that affects the way the matting absorbs it as well, then I might try setting it on fire again

One of the absorbent pads I got is about 50mm thick and about 400 x 400, thinking of cutting a hole in the middle so it so it fits up around the sump if I use that one, the other stuff is about 2-3mm thick about 400 x200 and can soak up 800mls

Not everyone has the ability to prepare bikes like they're an engineer, my brother, Ian Staples, and I blew an oil line at manfeild when we raced circa 1986, on TV too. A few people came up and said we should be using proper hose fittings, he was a fitter and i'm a sparky, we were preparing that bike to the best of our ability.
Would've saved a heap of shit going down if someone had pointed the oil fitting thing out before we blew it, like in scrutineering, or in a passing (polite) comment.
Ok Ian's now one of the guys who gives the Sidecars Certification, I'm limited in my mechanical knowledge, have a better knowledge than 28 years ago but more importantly know my limits, except when drinking home brew spirits, and since Bob's run out of stickers he's now having to fix brake lines properly...
We have to cater for the lowest common denominator, like most of us once were.

Roger, I may look into that cos there a shit of bolts to disassemble it... Mind you wont be changing too many tires, at the moment ive gone through more fibreglass than rubber.

O fuk, a man that cannot figure out how to take a wheel off or change a fukin tyre, WOW but he does has hammers hahahaha
