Mate of mine was at Hampton on the weekend putting together a promo video thing for Team LP Racing.
Not enough action shots for me (sounds like the weather stopped him doing what he really wanted to do) but worth a look.
well done, actually i thought there was a good mix of on and off track action as you can get endless amounts of mobile footage to a point it becomes same old same old, wouldn't have minded seeing all of 18's spin though...

Race Report Tri-Series Round Two, Manfield 15th December
I took Friday off work and headed out from Hamilton on my newly restored BMW R90S to Taihapi via Rotovegas, where I was staying the night with friends. Carried on to Manfield Saturday morning but only got 200m when I heard a clatter behind me, turned round to retrieve my left hand pannier from the roadside and left it at my mates place after first having stuffed everything into the other one. The die-cast catch had sheared off…it was once the better of the two pannier cases, not anymore …Grrrr! Arrived at the track at 9.30 and waited for Burt to arrive…Rang him at 10.30…still working on the sidecar and about to load up. He arrived about 1pm and we set about adjusting the front end geometry after our big crash at Hampton. We made it out for the last practice but soon ground to halt with the brakes jammed on. The fairing was in a slightly different place and was binding on the cross arm so back to the pits and out with a file to give the fibre-glass more clearance.
Sunday morning we headed out for the qualifying session only to get 2 ½ laps in before we ground to a halt with the fairing coming down on the kill switch…another Grrrr! So fixed that by turning the switch around and firming up the front suspension (was too soft anyway) and headed out to line up for the first race at the back of the grid…bloody frustrating! Got a reasonable start and managed to peg three chairs into turn one but it was a long haul to catch the rest of the field before passing the Farmer Boys and Pinky and managed a creditable 6th by race end. I was turning to jelly by race end and had been willing the chequered out for the last two laps. Aaron and Denny had fried their clutch on the start (leaving them non starters in the second race as well) and as such there were yellow flags out and unfortunately Adam/Stu and Tracy/Tina got pinged for passing under yellow and were relegated back two places each. That left Baz/Shorter in first, Spike/Astrid 2nd, Lawrences 3rd, Adam/Stu 4th, Pirate/Darren 5th, Burt and Me 6th , Farmer Boys 7th, Bruce/Jim 8th, Pinky 9th, Danger Dave 10th and Dowmans 11th, with a few DNS’s and DNF’s. It was however a huge battle up front between Baz/Shorter and Adam/ Stu with the lead changing multiple times each lap and Robbie told me afterwards it was probably the best race he had ever had…he sure was buzzing!
Denny gave me a few tips on how to get the rig to turn in a bit better which worked a treat in the second race. We got a blinding start from the back of the grid and passed 6 or 7 sidecars into turn one and managed to get Pirate under brakes into turn one on lap 5 and pull away. If we’d have got more traction out of Higgins we felt we might have got close enough to Spike/Astrid to have a go but it was just baking up on exit onto the back straight. A new tire for Wangas might help but my 71 kg is a deficit sometimes, have to eat more pies eh Spike (-: So results for race two were: Adam/Stu 1st, Lawrences 2nd, Spike/Astrid 3rd, Burt and I 4th, Pinky 5th, Des/Tim 6th, Farmers 7th, Pirate/Darren 8th, Bruce/Jim 9th, Dowmans 10th, Spungebob/Jason 11th and some DNF’s.
Hope that's all about right, I apologize if it's not.
Back on the Beemer for the ride home and I was feeling elated and rooted at the same time. Made it back to Hamilton from Manfield in exactly 4 hours non-stop so the arse was second hand by the time I got home. No not much speeding involved but just a constant/consistent cruise. Beemer never even hit reserve and ran the entire trip faultlessly apart from a small oil leak from the drive-shaft bellows which I’ll fix before heading to Wangas. Rapt with it and no doubt it will become a long term jigger in the Mickleson household.

With half the chairs actively racing going there, our low numbers at nationals are not indicative of how many are out there racing.
Numbers at the last two meetings have been fantastic up here, there is enthusiasm coming back to our sport and I would hope MNZ can see that and give us some time to get our shit together.
Everyone I talked to about the nats, is doing them or going to eastern creek. There are a couple doing neither, but fuck all.

I'm over being fair, there's actually 7 sidecars down here as a couple of people own two and some other muppet bought one shit his pants when he rode it and hasn't been seen since and we're putting three local outfits on the grid for the local National rounds, pretty fucking pathetic effort really from the locals
I'd do Eastern creek with bells on it if it didn't clash with our own Nationals, does the BSTT here clash with any Aussie series?
If Eastern creek was at a different time then we'd probably get both more support for our Nationals and more to go over to OZ

I dont think its fair blaming those going to Aussie for the low entries at the Nats, there is only 5 or 6 moderns going, so there should be plenty left around, pity only 3 out of 7 locals only doing there local round, but that happens quite regularly i think. The sidecars didnt go to Aus this year & we promised them we would in 2014 so they would continue to support our BSOC meet, & we had a great feild at that. We will not be going to Aus in 2015 so will be supporting the Nats then, & i dont think MNZ will pull the plug on us as who will race in our place. You cant really blame those who want to race in Aus, as its free freight, free entries & pit garages, & works out alot cheaper than going south, as well as racing on an ex GP track with heaps of other sidecars. The Aussies moved their round so they could come here, abit like we tried to do here, with the backing of Billy, until that fell through... Chris

Don't panic,I've got this.......Well I thought I did til somebody pulled the rug out from under me!!!!!
Seriously,Theres no chance sidecars will be dropped next year,The manual states "If it's not run for 2 years",It ran last year and will be running this year. The supp regs stated 10 entries received by the closing date and that was achieved.....JUST
The problem we face is,We need to get a minimum 10 entries for the class to make it viable for the host clubs too run them,As with other classes its not such a problem as they can be combined and we will be doing so for 2014,I had a discussion recently with a local sidecar team that wanted me to run with 6 at Taupo for the TT.Yip we can do that,BUT the entry fee will be,The normal entry fee multiplied by 10,Divided by 6 equaling around $450 per rig,Manfeild for the final round will be around $600(3 days of racing).
I seriously doubt the board are going to suddenly have a change of heart next year,So maybe we ALL need to get on the same page and try and work out something for the future.

The clash seems to be an ongoing thing, what with travel times involved to get a container (it's OK Scrivy, they use them properly) to and from Australia.
I think SCRA should approach Cemetry circuit about making the two circuit races of the Suzuki series two day events, to make it worth it for south island chairs to make the trip. Then we can run the nats as proposed this year.
Or sidecars only run a national points series every other year.
The former would be my preference. The latter would see some teams give up completely I think.

Has everyone already forgotten not so many years ago we only had 2 SI rounds and none in the North and I think the year after there was none and that was when we only had a 6 grid minimum? anyone remember that Wanganui last year wasn't even going to run a sidecar class?

If you had come to the AGM you would have seen that nearly every member supported the decision.
Couldn't give a shit about people going Aussie so long as we have enough left to run and support the class here, but 16 on the grid would be way better than 10, Dave was looking at pulling out with no swinger which left us with 9 which would mean we didn't have the numbers to run, Alex and Drew originally looked at going to Oz if they had we wouldn't have had the numbers again and again no series, a lot of the time we seem to be on the verge of not having the numbers and always just scraping through and there's enough chairs out there that is shouldn't be happening
Oh yeah everyone please pick on Pig and Goober at Wangas about not supporting local rounds
I'm sure with the membership heavily biased to the North nearly everyone would support what was proposed but as I've already said it would make it pretty much impossible for me to do the complete National series and most likely Kai as well, as poor value for money as some members see the nationals driving up from here for a one day meeting with two races is even worse
A little more positivity would be good :)

I'm not sure enough SI chairs would come up to make it worthwhile regardless of it being a two day meeting as it runs at the busiest time of time and I know it would be difficult for me to get time off and probably Kai
Every second year I think would mean the class has already failed

As a spectator, albeit one with a vested interest, I attend race days because I enjoy watching the variety of racing. With all the complaints, tooing and froing, doubts and concerns, I take my hat off to the organizers and riders for the great spectacle we see over a weekend.
With so many people involved you're never going to witness the perfect event, but if you appreciate that everyone is enthusiastic and doing the best they can given the constraints of logistics and money, I believe all should simply do the best they can with what they have and support the sport without too many demands.
I want to congratulate everyone involved and let you know that your efforts under the difficulties you face are appreciated. I only wish I could attend more events and be more involved in sponsorship.

You can't blame some people for not being there. Just 'cause they own a chair doesn't mean they're gunna do every meeting on it.

Yip,
But the problem with scrutineering is,It's a bit like a W.O.F in that its really only good for the moment it's checked,Thats why I brought in the rule that states "Caliper mounting bolts must be wired or pinned" Some folks thought it was ridiculous,Others thought it didn't go far enough,But whatever,It's an easy thing to spot on the dummy grid,
Still no excuse for no protection in front of containers though,I suspect things will be a little different this year as El Presidente is doing the track inspection.

The fold down beds would take the weight of ours, and the Agip bike could gon underneath.
If we can't get oil pressure though, I'm inclined to use your bike down south to give me a couple months to build a good donk out of two. Rather than try and do it in three days with no possibility of getting parts if they're needed.

Wanganui Cemetery circuit 2013
Monday before I leave and we’re out at Dave’s place giving the sidecar a once over, nut and bolt check, putting the correct circlip on the selector shaft, riveting the chain link where it was coming apart and loading up ready to go.
Tuesday there’s the 316km drive to Picton and a smooth sailing to Wellington, I hadn’t organised anywhere to stay as I figured being Christmas eve it wouldn’t be too hard to find somewhere, originally I’d thought I’d head up as far as Levin or Sanson but ended up driving the whole way to Wanganui and getting a Motel there.
Wednesday I head off down the pits, a bit early as it turns out so I go for a drive around Wanganui out to the beach and piss about for a while and then head back.
Alex and Glen are pitted in the same area and Pig and Goober turn up as well and set up beside me and before too long scrutineering opens up and we sign in and get the bikes checked over.
They seem dead set on finding something wrong with every bike and when I go through we fail the 65mm ground clearance check as the catch tray is sitting too low, an easy few seconds and it’s fixed and passed and we pack up and leave the sidecar in the shed for the night.
We get down there about 6am the next morning as Matt needs to sign in and get his gear checked and once done the wait starts.
Riders briefing comes and goes and Nick Cole show he’s needs a hearing check by asking a couple of questions that we’ve already been given the answers to.
Wanganui virgins
People who haven’t raced here before are first up for a 4 lap familiarisation and although I’ve raced here a few times Matt hasn’t so we line up to go out in it along with Pig and Goober and few other sidecar and solo teams.
The few laps we get are a good warm up and we’re back to the pits and wait our turn.
Practice 1
We intended to take it a bit easy and learn the track sort out some braking points and some lines through the railway line and up through the cemetery.
Coming out of T2 and onto Taupo quay there’s some fairly atrocious bumps which are tending to push us out wide and Goober/Pig come past us flat out between T1 and T2 and for a moment I think they’re going straight ahead but he gets it stopped and turned and carries on.
We pull back in and find we’re running 12th out of 17 and give the bike a look over and get ready for qualifying, I also ask Matt to move up a bit on the bike to make it easier to slide the rear and get rid of some of the push.
Qualifying
Well this doesn’t go quite as well as I’d hoped, I was planning on dialling it up bit but after leaving the pits and getting on the straight up to the bridge the Sidecar dies and we coast over the bridge and pull off on the outside of the main straight.
I can smell burning plastic and as we’re trying to pull the body off I can see smoke coming from the battery compartment and I’m wondering how I’ll break the news to Jo that her bike has burnt to the ground.
The smoke stops and luckily there’s no fire and they red flag the session to get us out of the way.
The steward says “we had to red flag that because of where you’re stopped” so I point out to him that with a dead bike we didn’t have to much choice of where we were going to end up, next we’re told we shouldn’t have been trying to get the body off so I explain we were more than a little worried about the fact it was smoking.
We get pushed down the end and load on the trailer and watch the remainder of the session from the run off area, a few laps later and we see Tracey/Tina go into the bales on the bridge and the red flags come out again, we see them both up and walking so know they’re not too badly off.
Tailored back to the pits and now we have to see if we can get it fixed.
Up on the stands and off with the panel and find the battery bracket has broken bracket and let the battery fall over so it’s shorted out on the tub and melted the earth wire, I borrow a inline crimp terminal to fix the earth wire and use a bunch of cable ties to strap the battery down and it fires back up straight away..
While it’s up there we bleed the brakes and check over the rest of it.
Parade
I wasn’t going to bother with the parade but Matt is keen and it’s a good chance to make sure it’s running properly, lap one is pretty unpleasant with no helmet and light rain, we’re just behind Pig and Goober and I’m thinking the sidecars are getting a pretty good reception but it turns out the clapping and cheering is all for Guy martin who is right behind us.
Race 1
Due to not even getting a lap in we’re off P17 dead last.
Lights out and as I try to launch Dave/Darren in front of us bog down and I don’t even have enough space to swing out past them so I have to slow up and by the time we’re going again the field has a good lead on us.
Pretty uneventful and we pick up a few places getting past Dave/Darren, Bob/Jason, Barry Fane/ Aida Gulbransen.
We come up behind Alex/Glen about lap 4 and start putting a bit of pressure on them, after chasing them for a couple of laps we make a pass to move in front up to 12th but Alex/Glen come back straight away and then Barry/Robbie, Aaron/Denny and Adam/Stu come flying past and get between us which gives Alex/Glen enough of a break to get away.
Last lap and Burt/Neville come past and then the Farm boys do the same on the line.
13th place finish, best lap 01:05.858
The bike was a bit tail happy under brakes so we make a bias adjustment in between races have a look over it and gas it up.
Race 2
I tell Matt before we go out I’ll park slightly further back and be aiming to go to the middle of the track in case the same thing happens on the line.
Lights out and we hammer it, we swing left into the centre of the track and we’re in the middle of the pack down through T1/T2, we’re already past the slower guys who held us up last time.
I’m harder on the brakes into corners and harder on the gas out of them and the rev limiter is working overtime.
First 4 laps and we’ve gone past 3 bikes and onto the back of Alex/Glen again, he’s a bit quicker over the bridge but I reel him in down the straight and try and get under him in T1 just to get cut off.
Down Taupo Quay over the railway line and through the cemetery I can’t quite the run I want and try the inside up to the bridge and just about get the nose taken off for my trouble.
Outside of T1 trying to get it squared up early and still not making it, with a couple to go I notice we’re gaining on the Lawrances and as the white flag come out we’re right up on them.
I’m right on the back of Alex/Glen off T2 and hard on the gas as we exit, I finally get the run down to the railway line and pass both the Lawrances and Alex/Glen and then get a good run up through the cemetery.
I’m expecting them to come back at me as I turn up towards the bridge and hold a tighter line but once I get to the bridge I know they can’t do it before the flag.
9th place finish, best lap 01:01.818
Missing the qualifying cost us a better grid position which would have helped heaps and looking at the lap times I could have run with the bikes a place or two or front of us but overall we came away fairly happy.
We’re now both a bit more confident in the bike and how we can ride it and looking forward to seeing how it pans out next weekend at the NZ Nationals Rd1.

Interesting weekend with our chair not running right. I think we've narrowed the problem down to the timing being backed off a touch. So it's heating the exhaust valves to the point that it's leaning out and gets weaker and weaker every lap.
More interesting is fucken Warwick being oblivious of where his chair wheel is. He gave us a wee love tap in race two, then forced the pirate over on us so hard it looked like a third tip over this season in race three.

*FOR SALE* Formula 2 sidecar (2009 DDR chassis)
The bike has had a complete rebuild and has not been raced for the last two seasons; it has been maintained and kept immaculate regardless of cost. The bike was raced competitively for two seasons in the British F2 championship, and would be more than capable of winning at club level!!
Comes with.....
• K8 motor with light work done to the head
• Full titanium exhaust
• Quick release front wheel
• Single nut rear and side wheel
• Quick shift gear change
• Yoshimura wiring loom and box
• Carbon fibre air box
• Under tray and platform in Carbon Kevlar
• Brand new fairing fitted (unpainted)
• Second fairing unfitted
• 9 wheels including full set of wets
• Special tools included
• Full set of sprockets
• Maxton shocks on front
• Spares kit
This really is a great bike which is priced to sell, we will be very sad to see it go but due to a lack of race funds and work commitments we are unable to continue to race.

I'm biased a bit towards a dirty move, they made contact so it wasn't exactly a clean pass which means there wasn't really the room and he couldn't have won the race without making contact :nono:

Ruapuna NZ nationals Rd 1
After getting back from racing Wanganui we gave the outfit a bit of a going over as we need to make some changes
The new rear Avon tyres are taller than the Yokohama tyres we were using so the Thursday before unofficial practice we did some set up, changing ride height and camber angles to suit
Friday 3rd practice
We’d gone a bit flash for this round and got ourselves a pit shed so we unloaded and set up our gear and wait our turn
Out on track with the changes the bike felt much better than our last club outing and more predictable in its handling
Over the course of the day we did about 4-5 sessions trying different lines working on braking harder and getting on the gas earlier and in the last session scrubbing some tyres in before we packed it up for the day
Saturday 4th Practice 1
We’re taking it a bit easy trying Matt getting further forward around the infield sweeper to stop the push and get on the gas earlier and it’s felling pretty good and end up 7th fastest for the session 01:53.821
Saturday qualifying
We put a bit more effort into this one or at least thought we had to find we’d improved our time bugger all and gone back one spot into 8th at 01:53.600
The Barry Smith/ Robbie Shorter after problems all Friday and in practice finally get out and end up on 2nd place spot
Saturday Race 1
Lining up on the grid and I notice the Barry Smith/ Robbie Shorter aren’t on their grid spot
Farm boys don’t make the best of starts and Pirate/Darren are smoking the rear big time as Drew/Alan get a flyer from the row behind
I make it past the Farm boys but Drew/Alan make it into T1 just in front of us, we close them up under brakes into the hairpin and have to slow up a bit to avoid rear ending them on the exit
Around the infield sweeper and I see Barry Smith/ Robbie Shorter off on the side of the track having done a motor on the warm up lap
Drew/Alan get a bit out of shape sliding through the left hander but not enough to let us get past but when they run wide on the sweeper we go through with the Farm boys following
We pull away from Drew/Alan but the Farm boys are all over the back of us on their F2 outfit and about ½ race distance make the pass on us up the inside at the hairpin and pull away through the infield
Over the next couple of laps they pull a gap but we start closing them down and on the last lap are right up on them again, by this time my arms are tired and I’m struggling to turn the bike especially into the dipper
Into the dipper on the last lap and the farm boys try getting back to their agricultural roots by running off onto the grass on the exit and I’m hard on the gas knowing I’ve got a chance to get past, I miss the gear change and lose a few metres and it’s all they need to lead us to the line
6th best lap 01:52.409
Sunday 5th
We give the bike a bit of a going over and go out in the scrub session for a bit of a warm up and it’s all feeling good
Robbie, Barry and Dave have spent until 10pm the previous night doing a motor swap and are hoping for a better day for the team
Sunday Race 2
This time around Barry/Robbie make it past the warm-up lap to grid up
The Farm boys get a flyer and I make it past the Pirate/Darren and onto the back of Drew/Alan, knowing I need to get past them straight away if I want to stick with the Farm boys who’ve made it through T1 in 4th I push the pass around the outside, I know it’s going to be tight and feel a bit of a bump on the way through
Pirate/Darren come through on the inside at the hairpin, Barry/Robbie have hit the front closely followed by Aaron/Denny and Alex/Glen and the Farm boys hold 4th for the first lap until Spike/Astrid and Pirate/Darren pass them
I’m not making any inroads on them this time around and they’re pulling away each lap and I have a pretty lonely race to the flag
7th best lap 01:53.384
A quick check over of the bike and we’re ready to go again, Barry/Robbie also have had a good result with a 3rd place finish after all their drama with electrical and engine problems
Sunday Race 3
I’m getting my starts a bit more sorted and get a reasonable launch, Pirate/Darren are smoking the rear as usual and Drew/Alan is doing his usual flyer up the inside
I’m alongside and pulling past the Pirate/Darren and moving left to go up the inside of the Farm boys wanting to be in front of them or I’ll struggle to stay with them
As I move over to go past them the Pirate/Darren moves left to avoid me and Give Drew/Alan a good smack
We make it through T1 and down to the hairpin in 4th where the Pirate/Darren take both the Farm boys and us under brakes into it
Spike/Astrid then goes past both of us into the infield sweeper, a couple of laps later we get a bit untidy out onto the straight running wide and the Farm boys go past us and start edging away
I can’t stick with them and it’s another lonely ride to the flag for another 7th best lap 01:53.535
We didn’t go quite as well as we’d hoped but learnt a bit more about the bike and are gaining more confidence in the bike every time we ride it , roll on Rd 2 at Levels

They reckon it was a stuck throttle, thought I heard the engine winding down? They might have hit the kill switch? but thought I could hear a fuel pump at the end? or is the fuel pump on a different circuit?

if you listen to the sound of the throttle action the revs did not drop at all from backing off on the throttle so must have become stuck, the revs only dropped down ( Or the motor got put under labour) from the brakes being applied big time. I take it they were both ok.
Shame one of the chairs got involved in accident causing damage to an oil line on there unit, nothing is perfect I guess

It wasnt a fuckin oil spill, it was a split oil cooler from a collision. Nithing to do with engines blowing up or ill prepared machines or retardation. Could have happened to a solo. The team feels bad enough without fucknuckles like you making uninformed comments.

Easy there big feller, it was tongue in cheek and meant in humour. I don't criticise anyone meanly. I should have put 'pt' after it.
I fully understand how they would be feeling. I do have an understanding of what goes into preparing for an event and the day was going well despite a few incidents. Everyone appreciated the parade laps after the event was called off, witness the standing ovation.

Hey guys n girls. We (Juniper and I) are really keen to have a good crack at sidecar racing, it looks like a bit of us!
The amount of stick we get for our two wheel two-up style... Apparently the pillion is not supposed to drop a knee and slide off the seat - but it's fun and works for us. :bleh:
We'll be at Taupo on May 10.
What would you say are the start-up costs?

Start up costs are relative to how competitive the chair is. Only one I can think of that's ready to race right now, under ten grand is Graeme Harris' outfit. He is asking $8k, but I think that's too much.
Pretty good chair though.
Darren Pate is selling a very good chair, that needs a new crank in the ZX10...or a new motor.
