I don't see the problem really..
there are bias/twin master cyl setups that make sure that one circuit will always operate. Will photograph some of phils dads rally/targa car setups when I get to chch end of the week, apparently they do the trick and if one fails u still get full use of the other one. And will test our own on agip bike which I believe will still operates a master cyl effectivly even if one is removed/out of action.
and if you can't get a twin master cyl setup so it can't fail then yea, bolt another caliper and hand brake onto the front disc..

I read the rule, to mean each brake has to operate at least two wheels. Which is slightly problematic.
Where did you read that?
I read, outfit must have minimum of one brake for the front and rear wheel, and if there is a brake on the sidewheel it must be operated by the rear brake.. something like that.

Yee ha! Paeroa in 2 weeks, can't wait to see everyone going hard!! We will get up there Saturday night and try link up with the sidecar fam
Just incase anyone hasn't seen the official letter, or for any visitors to the thread..
http://www.mnz.co.nz/news/news-detail/2013/01/31/urgent-notice-to-all-sidecar-competitors
We have a potential problem with some brake set ups which we need to address urgently. We must be proactive in checking for and fixing any problems relating to safety, this is extremely important for the safety of yourselves, fellow competitors, the viewing public and the sports future.
Where outfits are using two master cylinders with a pivoting balance bar arrangement if the geometry of the set up is not correct or there is other faults, what can and has happened is if one of the cylinders loses or boils it’s fluid it is possible that when brake pedal is pushed further that due to a mechanical jamming, binding of other restriction the good cylinder CANNOT be depressed / activated. This contravenes rule
# 27.6.2a "if one system fails the other shall work efficiently ".
You will all need to check that there is no mechanical hindrance or binding in any way in any of the brake lever/pedal set up which would stop the levers travel should either or both cylinders fail. The best way to check this is to open a bleeder on a calliper for one cylinder and push the lever and make sure there is no binding and the other cylinder is able to operate correctly and repeat this for the other cylinder and then do both cylinders at once. With both cylinders fully depressed the foot operated pedal should still be able to travel a small amount further. There must be NO reason why either or both cylinders cannot be FULLY depressed.
Also on any brake set up the cylinder must be able to be FULLY depressed without any hindrance. Please check your outfit in the manner above and make all of the modifications if required
All bikes will need to be checked by a MNZ technical steward or scrutineer in the above manner and signed off before their next race and noted in the log book. This will become part of the two yearly check.
We will be checking all outfits at Paeroa and noting as such in the log books as such you will need the appropriate bleeding tools, hoses and fluid required for your outfit also as this may take some time we thank you in advance for your patience.
There will be NO leeway given as this is a very serious issue so if you can all check and correct if required BEFORE the meetings this will help you being a rider and not a spectator.
We have endeavoured to send this to all competitors, but please forward this on to any one you can.
If you wish to contact me to discuss this or if I can be of any help please do so
Regards
Ian Staples

Bit of stress in the household today, trying to work out how to fix a sidecar that isint broken, with regard to the brake rule, which appears to be a bit of a moving goal post at the moment.
We have a factory built outfit with an extremely fine pedigree, that im not about to rip into modifying & probably effectively making it worse, in a rush, two weeks out from a meeting.
I wonder if anyone else is having the same problem?
yep we had the same problem we got round it buy putting the caplier off the front off my mountain bike on to the sidecar it stops my mountain bike good and now we have two independent braking systems:Punk:

Where did you read that?
I read, outfit must have minimum of one brake for the front and rear wheel, and if there is a brake on the sidewheel it must be operated by the rear brake.. something like that.
Sidecars shall be fitted with at least two efficient brakes operation on at least two of the wheels, with at least two separate operational circuits irrespective of their method of operation. If one system fails the other system shall work efficiently.
Two efficient systems, operating two wheels, independent of one and other.
That's my reading of it. Unfortunately the writer of the rules seems to have failed school certificate comprehension. The use of correct punctuation in the written English language, has made many a lawyer's career I'm sure.
I can see that there's an argument suggesting that should one master fail, on the common bias system, that so long as the other one still works anyway unlike the housebus, it is two systems that work irrespective of the others operation.
But how do you prove it? Bleed your brakes at scrutineering every time you race? I'm kinda all for that actually, since I firmly believe brake fluid should be replaced every meeting.

true, all down to the interpretation.
I just read it as, you need at least one brake on the front and one on the rear, you gotta have at least 2 master cylinders and if one fails the other one should still work. (twin master cyls with bias or a seperate hand operated cyl)
I didn't get too carried away with interpreting the operating 2 wheels bit...
We will just refresh our setup on the agip bike as it as, with twin masters that can work if one fails. plus the hand brake.. It should pass the check I think.
As for bleeding every meeting, thats fine thanks to TransDiesel CHCH who supply me with lovely Agip brake fluid.. www.transdiesel.com
Mo Haley told me they never bothered bleeding the brakes much, apparently vince or dave used to make little inserts out of carbon fibre and just slip them inbetween the brake pads and pistons to remove any pedal travel. He said I should be doing the same..

The only advantage there, is less heat being transferred to the piston and fluid. If one has to pack out the pads, something isn't working right.
Surprises me that Mr Haley encourages the practice really, it is a symptom fix, not a problem solved I think.

think the idea was just to stop having that few millimeters of free travel before the brakes really bite. rather than trying to bleed out the free travel all the time as the pads wear down, just slip a finger, er I mean thing in.
might try it out sometime.. need some sheets of thin carbon fibre first.

Ya need a better understanding of how the brakes actually work mate. As pads wear down, they don't force the fluid back as far on release. No air gets into the system that wasn't there at the beginning, and there should never be a gap between the pads and the piston.

true true, didn't think too long before I typed.
googled up uses for shims then, Heat transfer mainly and even spacing.
Not sure what mo was on about then saying don't bother bleeding just put the carbon shims in. (although if your having to bleed them all the time cause the fluids boiling etc then it makes sense.. bit of heat shielding to make the fluid last longer)
meh.. something to play with sometime

We, neither of us, claim to be in the know.
A hand brake and a twin master bias that cannot just bottom out a master without activating the other must be sufficient. All bases are covered no matter who reads it right.

Providing that the seperate system shares no parts in common with the main brake except the disc, then no problem, the main system can be made of cheese.

Terry Martin ( Triumph Triple and sometime BMW sidecar starter) came thru on lap 2 had it nicely leaned over and bang down he went......on a rather random looking bit of new patch right in the apex. time to fix agip bike,
rebuild rear shock (hopefully) and re-grease all the pivot points on the swingarm/suspension.
Doesn't look like there are bearings in the swingarm, just gets 2 big bolts holding it in.. thought there would be more to it actually.
Didn't seem to any slop or play anywhere so will clean it out and re-grease. chuck shock back in and hope that might help the handling.
Doing the brakes too, rebuild all calipers and the master cylinders and spend some time with the bias setup trying to get the slop out of it and find out how to work it and setup the bias hopefully.
Then it'll be test session time to see if any improvement! hope so.

just bushes it looks like, not sure what they are made out of. Will take it to the parts washer n clean all the shit out of it. Put fresh grease in everywhere.
Shock is in the shop finally, hoping they pull it apart asap and rebuild it. See how much it costs/what it comes back like and if its worth it will do the front as well.
pulling all the brake gear off the bike and get into refreshing all that.
Will take front swingarm off later today and see what else I can occupy myself with.
(edit: see how the swing arm is attached to the bike, just a bolt on each side. not even particularly big bolts. I thought there would have been a big shaft that went right the way through. Oh well, its made it this far in life it obviously works)

"Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton says a rear brake failure caused him to crash during his first testing session for his new team in Jerez.
Cameras at the circuit did not capture the crash, from which Hamilton walked away unhurt. The British driver ploughed across a gravel trap into a tyre wall 15 laps into the session following a braking problem.
The 2008 world champion says it was a "pretty heavy" impact, but is glad it has happened now in testing, rather than during the season."

Need some advice on disassembling my rear hub..
I've taken off as much as I can from the rear hub assembly.. I was now hoping the axle and that whole assembly would just slide out of the swing arm. But it doesn't.. I tapped it with a rubber mallet and doesn't seem to move.
Any ideas on how it would come out? Or if I should just hit it harder.. It looks like the splines on the axle are stopping it sliding through the bearings and sliding out.

.. Gave it a few more taps, I can't see much of whats going on in the swingarm but the way the shaft is shaped I don't think it can slide through the bearings.. maybe the bearings have to come out as well? seems dumb.. I was reluctant to hit too hard incase I fuck the bearings.
Started trying to take off the brake disc to see if maybe it slides out the other way but nah the wheel hub is welded on it looks like, its not going that way. (and the brake disc can't even come off until the whole assembly is out of the swingarm so that was a waste of good swear words and knuckle skin undoing those siezed up bolts.. pretty sure it has to come out the way I originally thought)

Don't worry about shagging the bearings, they're probably due for replacement anyway. By hitting them in any way, shape or form they'll have the races dented by the balls and won't last long anyway. Dig the seal out and see what size or numbers are written on the bearings. I still wouldn't mind betting the shaft goes out the way you first thought but then I can't see from the photo either. Measure the OD of the spline and let us know what the bearing numbers are and they can be cross referenced in my bearing cattle-dog..or anyone else's for that matter.

Hopefully next year we wont be upstaged by a sponsor that hogs good track time for no more than previous sponsors have paid not to.

It will be just fine as it is.
I have BMW barrells & pistons, but no heads yet, we might need to spend 15 minutes assembling it tomorrow night when the heads are ready.
Gave the R100 barrells new rings & a hone, good old Ford Falcon ringset, got enough for three motors for less than the price of one bmw ringset.
Giving the heads new valve guides, valve grind & retrofitting stem seals, which they dont need in a two wheeler, so that should be the end of the smoke exiting every corner that it always did.
It will stay R100rs 980cc with in ported heads for the forseeable future.

Yea took the swingarm into Warwick for a look see, got a hammering until it moved a bit then used a puller to pull the axle stub out, and a big press to press the bearing out. Cheers! Heres the swingarm and rear hub assembly all apart, gave it a quick degrease.. will give it a full clean then install new bearing and grease up the swingarm pivot. Waiting for the rear shock to be rebuilt - re install that and grease up the linkages etc.
278483
This was what the stub ended up looking like, the splined bit didn't go back down so it does just slide in and out through the bearing. But not easily!
278484
Got a nice array of parts to clean, replace, grease and reinstall..
278485
Got the sidechair wheel hub off, clean and regrease the bearings if they are still OK.. how do you tell? Just tapered bearings, I'm running them in my hand and they feel smooth. There is a bit of slop in this sidechair, Found the problem but will see how to get rid of the slop - may need brass bushes made or found to replace worn items. Also I'm using the grease in the photo for everything.. wheel bearings, pivot points etc - anyone see a problem with that?
278486
Got all the brakes off and the two master cylinders, they are wilwood items - clean them up along with the 4 calipers I took off.

This is the brake lever and bias setup.. will pull it apart to see how it works and what needs to be done to get it working properly and get some slop out of the whole setup.

Examine the rollers and the races carefully and see if there is any pitting on them, check the cost might not be bugger all to put a new set in

New bearings greased up and ready to refit the sidechair hub. Took the hub into Warwick to make sure the races were properly seated - all was well.
got a bit of tube cut on an angle as a spacer on the bottom and found a top spacer lying in a ice cream box of bit, got a piece of glass out of a photo frame and taped emery paper to it to smooth down a couple of surfaces so everything was sitting flush and was a very snug/tight fit. New tie rod as well from January.
278556
This axle stub had a fair bit of play in it before, now it doesn't :D so job done, Hopefully it's still tight after a few laps and once some load has been put on it.
278557
Schweet, hub disc back on, tight as a tiger. Wheel back on after this and no play when giving it the old wiggle. Good result, one thing to tick off the box.
278558
Swing arm is all degreased, axle stub out etc and degreased, new rear bearing waiting to go in and reassemble and refit to bike. Greasing up everything along the way.
But I have a rather big set back, I can't get the oil/bearing seals for the rear.. Tried all the Seal/Bearing firms in ChCh and also 'Early ford parts' fella.. Not sure where to try next.
278561
The offenders, seals for the rear bearing, I got as far as them being around a 1968 Ford Zodiac mk4 (maybe) got some part codes like PR6115 and PR6117? could have also been 6119 or 6116.. it eludes me
278559
Pretty much need them before I can reassemble as everything sandwiches together so once its back together I won't be able to put the seals in later without pressing the axle stub out again and wrecking my 89 dollar rear bearing.

The shit is....1, Adam /Stu
2, Aaron/Dennis
3, Baz/Robbie
4, Burt/Max
5, Tracey/Jo
6, Des/Warren
Can't remember how the rest panned out but it was Adam/Stu a master class easily in front and good close racing for the next three placings. Repeat positions for race two.
In the classics Me and Jo got two 3rds on the Matchy with Johny B/Rat on the Guzzi in a class of their own as usual way out front (my missus suggested to JB that we swap rigs  ) with us having a good scrap with Jason/Bryce for second. Kieth on the Harley was 4th and Willy/Julie behind them...pretty sure it was the same order for our second race.

Will be back in ChCh soon once rear shock is finished to reassemble - Will find out the go with my caliper when Malcolm texts me up.. hoping they can just clean up the wilwood but if not will make a decision on replacment - cheers for the links too
Paeroa was bloody good to watch - Was a little disappointed in getting in and out of my leathers a couple of times with hopes of racing - First I was hoping to swing on a F2 bike which I was excited about, got suited up and hopped on the bike to see how it felt in the pits but then the rider decided he wasn't keen on having someone who hasn't done Paeroa before (virgin laps were about to begin and then 2 practice sessions.. oh well, couldn't argue with him) he ended up not even racing and Gordy and Tina were gonna have at with that bike but also didn't pan out.
So I put my shorts n tshirt back on then Darren comes up and asks if I want to go out and swing on his bike - Yip keen!!, back into my leathers.. got on the bike engine running, clutch in, click it into gear. Crunch! bike lurched forward and stalled - clutch didn't work. I had this problem with Agip bike before and just rode without a clutch and got it rolling, but nah the rider wasn't keen. Anyway, I jacked the bike up with Darren and fiddled around with it and got the clutch working for him. Then was asked if I wanted to ride the bike - YIP! I sure did.. Back into my leathers and gear, handed my license in and signed my name up. Sadly as we were going to line up on the dummy grid I was denied again and told the original rider was going to do it again and was kicked off the bike. So f*ck it, back into my civy clothes and off to wander around and watch the racing instead. The bike I was going to pilot ended up crashing and flipping..
The racing was great to watch though, I was pretty jealous not to be out there. Classics looked great, The Guzzi miles ahead of the rest, I thought the moderns were a bit closer, Unsworth did pull the usual lead but there was bloody good battle for the next 3/4 positions. Was great to watch.
Glad there was a south island outfit there too, Alex and Glen Macdonald going hard on their old long bike running old tyres (saving goodies for nats) and looked to be having lots of fun if not battling with the streets a bit - bike looked like a handful! They did well surviving the day.
Very much looking forward to Wangas this year and Paeroa next year and hope to have my bike there and running well for both.

Whats the problem with the availability of size of the seals...ID or OD? If you can get the ID in the next size seal you may be able to bore the OD out in the hub outboard of where the bearings fit. That way they'll be more likely to be available next time you need them. There's always more than one way of killing a cat....trust me I'm a convicted cat killer :(

You could get away with a 48 x 67 (by carefully linishing the OD down to fit in the hub or turning a bit out of it), they have those on the shelf as well. Like I said ....cats:bleh:

It's a transmission seal (assuming you can read and part number is PR6119 - cross references to a Timken 472439
Seal Outside Diameter (in): 2.629 or 66mm
Seal Shaft Size (in): 1.875 or 49mm
Seal Width (in): 0.313 or 8mm
Used on Tremec T5 transmissions (23 spline output) 85-88
Could try 17472X part number for a Massey Fergusson tractor as I believe this is the same or New Holland 29142

Nah man, that was mechanical.
You could tell by looking at the amount of handlebar input she was carrying, how much depression she had on the foot pedal, where her helmet was pointing and the gyroscopic momentum of the passenger. All forces point towards severe retardation............ er... on one side.....

Whats the problem with the availability of size of the seals...
The normal looking seal I can get one close to it, chch place had one that is 1mm thicker, ID OD I think are same but its 1mm thicker, I thought it may just rub and wreck itself on the shaft/sprocket carrier. Will check that out when we can reassemble it and see if the extra thickness would cause a prob.
The real problem seal is the one with the metal collar thing around it.. 'Cause no one seemed to have anything like it down here. Yet to try Massey Ferg/New Holland options.

Is that the seal with the metal ring around it? Thats the one I'm having a hard time getting.. And if they have it on the shelf then problem solved!
Yea - if we can't get a direct replacment then I'm sure we can buy a similar one and make it fit..
I was trying to get just a direct replacement first.
Cheers for all the help! back to work everyone

The one on the left I can get a similar one, 1mm thicker but that may not be an issue. Was just trying to get an exact replacement if I could.
The one on the right has the metal ring/sleeve with the rubber seal on the inside. That one is the troublesome one to find a replacement for. It'll have to be exactly the same. Or yea - will have to find something similar and muck about with it.

No steel shield, just the normal type. Not sure why it needs that...probably doesn't.

I'm after peoples thoughts (this could be dangerous), so i picked up the windle over the weekend :headbang: and it is an 03 r1 engine which is fuel injected from standard, the guy i got it from has fitted it with 41mm FCR Flatslides, i have available everything to convert back to injection so my question is should i keep it carbed or go back to injection?

Sorry I was replying to the other thread and didn't see this one. Yep that is a bit of an orphan by the looks of it but I'm sure something else could be adapted to fit. Shame its not up here still.
As far as the extra 1mm is concerned they can be thinned down a bit on the inside...I've done that before now

It's all good :) it might not even need to be shaved down if it doesn't contact anything, So that one might be OK, the steel shield one is a bastard but might still find one yet - got a few leads.

hahahaha :D this was a sore point when we teased/joked about him converting it to a carb motor.
I would say fuel inject it again.. there is a reason people go for fuel injection. people like squirters more than vacuumers (except SidecarBob)

prob doesn't need any seals - it runs a sealed rear wheel bearing..
But might as well replace the seals since they were put there for some reason..

Those cards are worth more than the bloody motor. And not as good as the injection.

Tracey dropped her hair straightener and chucked Jo out to look for it? I think thats what happens when you have a week to re-engineer somthing that isnt broken (well its broken now, good and proper). If she had the dustbuster on instead of a fire extinguisher the hay would have got dealt to quick smart.

Semi old fashioned outlook on how a parts person should be, but not an old fashioned one at all.
And I read the wrong column on my conversion chart, went left instead of right , hence incorrect imperial to metric conversion (amateur error, doh)

While I like the idea do you think it is likely to bring enough new crews in to have a sustainable class or just take numbers out of the existing classes?
