Ok technical question time Scrivy (not that you know shit) Kai has problems on lefts with it understeering as the chair lifts, how does he fix it?
yea..
rights seem ok because the rear will slide under throttle, but the lefts the chair comes up and then it pushes the front rather than slide the rear even under throttle.
could just be the driver (or the swinger ;) )

Are you mainlanders thick or sumpin???
Simple Euclidean geometry relating to Pythagoras’ theorem is involved. Got that?
Seriously, what is your front tyre like?? (I’m assuming shagged…) Your bike may be prone to understeer - so put your best tyre on the front to try to reduce it.
What is your front shock like?? (I’m assuming shagged…) When you turn in too hard, you may be ‘shocking’ the front tyre and cause it to slide, again causing understeer.
Remember that when you accelerate, you shift weight rearward and reduce front tyre grip. If your throttle application from the apex point of the corner is too vicious, your chair may also understeer. Because the weight of the chair is transferred to the rear too quickly, leaving the front with little grip. So if you can, try and get the chair turned before you use the twisty switch.
The problem with understeer is that to get rid of it you have to reduce your speed to less than the optimum for the particular corner. This will always cost you time. (and you don’t want that…) So Kai my man, at the first sign of a little understeer - do not keep increasing your steering! This does nothing! The tyres are already at 100% of their grip, and increasing the steering angle will only make your problems worse!
I would suggest getting your passenger to try some radical changes. Is he hanging too far off the side? Is he simply too heavy? (Was it Kick at the time?? Cause he's fucken useless...) Remember, he could be in the wrong place at the wrong time and is simply unloading the front. You need to do some drastic changes and notice their effects.
I on the other hand really enjoy the effects of understeer!! Having to crack off the throttle mid corner brings the rear around really fast, then it sets up the suspension to wallow, I love it!!
But, as Kick says, I don’t know shit…….. :weird:

umm.. it's still round and black. the tread depth holes show some meat left. much more than the rear. as for age condition i dunno.

no idea.. i doubt they have ever been rebuilt. there is basically no suspension travel front n rear. like a solid gokart

hehe, yip... can already feel all that happening on the few outings i have had. if it undsteers i don't keep turning harder i play around and i do manage to get the back around. havent understeered off the track yet (lie i have a couple times, swingers fault tho for sure). i can manage to get it to turn. i'd just rather have it prone to oversteer rather than understeer. it still handles nice i recon. might lower the front? it just feels like front needs more weight on it. maybe swinger too far back all the time.

anyway.. still learning eh, we wont get another run until hampton downs so see how it handles there.

I lean as much as I can left right and over the front - our next outing will be HD so can get him to try some things there I guess. Seeing as how his legs seem to drag along behind the bike he must be sitting pretty far back. he isn't exactly tall. When I was swinger I managed to keep all of me on the bike without hangin off the back.

na we ran 11psi on the front, 12 rear and 13.5 side (hot tyres) with outside temp of 14 degrees celcius.. didn't get a track temp cause was eating too many sandwhiches. Tyre temp after race was around 40 degrees and pretty even center and left and right edges. track was ok but had oil spill from drift cars and lots of dirt/shit on the track from them.. im sure it was clearing by end of the day though.
I'v noticed the understeer thing at all 4 meetings we have done.. I'll just figure out how to ride it properly. Its prob just me.

nah built this way from the start. and usually hub center steering should provide more grip, since the tyre stays flat on the road, leading/trailing link shit tends to lift the contact patch off the ground the more you turn.

I know the geometric advantage, but it should still have some caster to lift an edge when turning. So when the tyre distorts you get maximum contact patch still.

With a vertical steering axis, turning the wheel is not trying to lift the chair, and there is no more resistance wherever the wheel is angled. Add castor and you are, and at the same time as the wheel turns, it leans to accomodate the tyre distorting. So it's "heavier" to turn.
What this means, is that without castor the steering is lighter. It'd be fuckin neer impossible to ride though, because you'd get the mean speed wobble at next to no actual speed.

aaah I see..
guess I will have to look it up. cause trailing link or whatever has the problem of too much castor angle which decreases contact patch as the wheel lifts off the ground the more you turn
I thought hub center was to keep wheel flatter and increase grip.
I'll have a read later. I don't think the agip bike has adjustable castor anyway

yea. but I thought they use hub center steering because it lets them have much less castor or rake in an effort to keep the tyre flat on the ground when turning and keep the contact patch big.

Drew
27th September 2012, 16:01
No, castor = less contact patch when you're stationary. It cambers the wheel when you turn, and when there is momentum and load on the tyre, in a perfect set up it keeps the tread flat.
However, the biggest advantage to castor is stability. Because turning the wheel literally lifts the vehicle with a castor, the weight of the bike is holding it straight.

No, castor = less contact patch when you're stationary. It cambers the wheel when you turn, and when there is momentum and load on the tyre, in a perfect set up it keeps the tread flat.
I'm watching the video now, and they are saying what im saying haha.. (or, im repeating what they are saying)
hub center with a setup that makes sure from full lock to full lock the edges of the wheel do not lift off the ground/wheel stays flat on the ground is supposedly better, compared to trailing/leading link setups where the rake or castor is quite vicious and the edges of the wheel lifts off the ground a bit when you turn and decreases contact patch (even in corner under load). End result is hub center gives more grip and better steering because wheel stays flat on the ground with more tyre in contact with the road at all times. So I'm still getting the message that less castor or angle as you turn the better. so having a vertical castor would be ideal for contact patch when cornering (edit: there is no doubt a lot more to it, there is camber and geometry shit and all that for a reason to make sure under cornering loads or whatever the tyre stays flat on road and contact patch is as big as possible) but would be very very hard to keep in a straight line (maybe impossible)
anyway - my brain hurts.. good chat.

I was thinking more that no castor would have such a big contact patch all the time that the sheer grip of the tyre would make it hard to turn.

Official advice was that if you had an injured but walking rider, take them to Palmerston North....
Very reassuring....

.
the truth is nowadays that any club that doesn't run a medium to large event with a business model behind it somewhere is doomed, simple as that, unless they have a generous patron who will underwrite their losses at the end of the day.
Case in point will be the Barry Sheene Memorial, hat's off to the people who had the balls to run with it and I for one will hope like fuck it'll work for them financially, if it doesn't there's going to be some empty wallets around the place.

Long windle is made the same as the LCR alloy monocoque, I have an article here somewhere and I think it is Terry Windle they interview who tells them he can build a tubular just as good and the monocouque is just fashion
In the video Kai is talking about they do a lap of the same track on both of them, the tubular with leading link is meant to be a bit more forgiving than a monocoque and easier to ride

Windle's got a point there...if both tube frame and monocoque can be built down to the weight limit while being adequately stiff - and the tube frame is easier to make and repair - it is just fashion.
Remember, Windle built a run of carbon fibre monocoques - and L Christian came over to have a look at the first one built, smiled and said, Very nice - but not necessary....

I think they made at least three and they had some good success winning Euro champs and a bit of other stuff but were a bit more fragile in crashes and a lot harder to repair

actually, on the any other sunday interview with terry windle, he says the monocoque is easier to repair. you simply unstitch the affected parts and stitch in new parts and the chassis will handle/feel just like new. tubular you can twist and write off the whole thing...

Yeah because the monocoque is made in sections which is why you can upgrade the older LCR to the post 95 front end quite easily
He was talking more about the building of them than the repair, I'll try and dig the article out
