For no known reason my deep gut feeling has been growing that this years election is going to throw up some sensation like has never been seen before.

I have no idea what it might be but already there are some player and selection moves building that could suggest sensational outcomes might occur!

Basically the idea is to stop voters unlikely to vote Republican from casting a ballot. Like f'rinstance black voters.

Yep, that could be a downside.
I could see Trump withdrawing from the rest of the world until things started going badly at home whereupon he decides to bomb someone just as a distraction.

So ? Trump knew this from day one. He talked about running as an independent then said no, he wouldn't....I'd bet that the thinking was "lets see how far we can go within the system..."
If the convention does not endorse him, he's probably got enough support through the primaries he's won to be able to claim a popular mandate - and run as an independent, citing "popular pressure" to go back on his decision not to do just that....

As i've said before, if he does succeed and gets in as pres, he's going to be severely hamstrung as literally no one in either house will want to work with him.
Every single thing including a budget will have to be traded for to get support.

The Republicans are doomed this time round - the party's split and anyone they put up without trump's endorsement now won't get a voter turnout IMO.
