Hard to say you've raced there so you would know more than me but I would have said the top guys there are faster than the guys here, but then you look at the Oz crews who've tried the Worlds and they get lapped
It's pretty hard to compare anyway when everyone is on different bikes, I think we need a control class with everyone running LCRs to settle this

I disagree. We went out in a few laps and beat most of the field on their home track. Lawrances were right up their too on a low output engine. Also in '98 Westie and Glen Murray got 3rds at Phillip Island against 22 aussie teams.

The biggest detriment to going fast is peoples intellect.
I laugh my ass off when I hear people say a certain track is technical. FFS!!! Driving to work has more corners than a racetrack - do we bum out driving to work?

Drivng to work you're normally not trying to go as fast as you possibly can
Some people do have a tendency to overthink things but studying a track and working out how to ride it can give you quite quite a difference in your lap times

Hi all, so i've just brought the windle out of christchurch (sorry Nodrog) and will be picking it up on Feb 17, Do you think its a bit stupid thinking my first ride on a sidecar should be the Hampton nationals (and the test day beforehand)? or should i try and attend some test days and not race untill next season, might seem a silly question but i'm keen to ride it but don't want to piss everyone else off by getting in the way while i learn

you couldn't be slower than me, and people don't seem to get too pissed off :) just have your passenger tap you on the shoulder when someones behind you and move off the racing line.
Go for it, need bikes on the grid and better than doing a street race as a first outing :D Do a test day before plus the practice day and do as many laps as you can you should get comfortable, I think.
Good shit, good to see someone finally bought the outfit, it has been on trademe for far too long. Pics when you get it!

Thats great news, its an excellent chassis.
It would be stupid to do Wanganui or Paeroa as a first meeting, but Hampton Downs is perfect.
My suggestion.
I would take a different angle to Kai on lines. Hold your line like you own the track & let the overtaker work out how to get past you, it creates less stress for all parties & you will never get a hard time for it, predictability is the key.
I would also suggest that unless you & your passenger have mental telepathy, dont let him signal anyone past on one side or the other, that can end very poorly, as we saw at Hampton a few months back.

Good shit Dave!
Bob and I raced for the first time at Pukekohe - the first round of the Nationals back in 87. Started off the back row, and came 4th! Never raced one before, never raced at Puke before. Up against some nice gear and good teams.
So you should be able to get up to speed on it by the end of the first day. I wouldn't worry too much. There's no 115% cutoff in sidecars. As long as you hold your lines, no-ones gunna collect you.
Have fun!

This is a dead serious question. I wonder if someone could tell me if it is a requirment while passengering a sidecar, to hang on with your hands.
If for example, someone perfected the ability of say hanging on with their asshole, would that be against any MNZ rule?
yep it can be done and has been done

Nothing to do with any of that, but if you're passing up the inside or defending a line you're generally not taking one that will give you max corner speed anyway

how much do your matchless or bobs beemer weigh?
Don't know what the Beemer is but definitely heavier than the Matchless. We weighed the Matchy in 2000 @ Eastern Creek and I think it was 211kg after a race, so with 1/4 tank of methanol. Getting alziemers (old bastard:rolleyes:) so can't be too sure. Must get the scales out and check it sometime cause I've been asked that recently. That said it would be lighter than in 2000 anyway as its had a few more bits made out of ali instead of steel...mostly panel work.

OEM ones are piss weak....... as you all know....... :weep:The problem is the forks? I've had problems with gear dogs on the RF, and some Kawasakis. Would be a good idea to check those if you have the casings apart.
If it is an issue, there's a guy down here who spark erodes a back cut matched surface on to them. He's really good, and stupidly cheap.
Precision grinding surfaces them well, but it can fuck up the hardening I was told, so they fuck out again really quickly.

Spark eroding is no different to grinding as far as the hardening is concerned. You can stuff them up just the same, it all depends how worn they are and how much you take off the case hardening. If you go through the case they will wear faster no matter how you machine them.:weep:

Yeah I found that site today, but they dont have H/D forks. I think new shafts are also the go, as back in January last year (12 months ago) we put in all 3 new forks. Did Eastern Creek all mint, truck meet all mint, then HAGD - appeared mint....... then Hampster Downwards... and we all know what was wrong there - not going down. But come Wangas, it wouldn't go up!!! WTF??? New shafts and selectors are definitely the go. Will have to check the drum also, and even the drum rotator fork.

Hello again, being new to sidecars how to i become a member of the sidecar racing assocation? (even though at the moment i am only a sidecar owner as i haven't raced it yet )
Hi Dave, when you get your sidecar make sure it comes with its logbook and ID tag. If it hasn't been raced for at least 2 years it'll need a re-compliance (must be checked and signed off every 2 years) which I can do for you. Let me know when it arrives, my phone at home is 07 8493568 (evenings)

I had a call from Robby Shorter yesterday and he's nearly ready for me to inspect his chair for compliance. Is yours gunna be ready for an inspection any time soon so I can do both in the one trip?
Mines ready anytime Nev, fairings and all. Just waiting for my mechanic chum to help out with my excess Heiniken problem and look at my brakes, I should really ask him.
Duude, I couldnt afford to keep paying you the asking price you were demanding to keep bringing the BM in so far up the field.

Probably need to see fairings for mountings etc and if the swingers handles are mounted to the fairings they need to be done according to the rules ie. have plates on the inside so they can't pull out. I had a thought about the mounting of your front brake torque arms the other day, give me a ring some time Gordy (027 6058538 or @ home 07 8493568). Are you running it at Paeroa?

Not to mention the E mail that was sent to my wife recently by Bum Chum explaining what a cock I am (god knows shes the last person on earth that needs to have that explained to her), abusing scrivy & I & calling us a pair of cheating cunts or similar on facebook not that long ago, a string of threatening & abusive texts to me when I asked him what his problem was, & the list goes on. Fair enough, I do most stuff for myself as well. Make sure you cut the slots one at a time on each side and 180 degrees apart so you don't distort the disk...if you can understand my meaning. A little bit at a time should'nt distort the disc...sneak up on the bugger is what I'm trying to say.

Cheers mate. I get what ya mean.
Grind one slot, turn disk over. Repeat, rotate disk... And so on and so fourth. Four shallow cuts will be ample I think. Per side like.

Am a bit unhappy about that. I put a dial indicator on it in the front wheel and it was only running out 0.04mm (1 1/2 thou") so I thought that pretty good considering it was bent about 1.5mm after the crash at Hampers. I think you'll find that becauase I've ground the high spots off each side that means its an uneven wall thickness between the outside and the ventalation slots now..thats why it has probably warped again. Sorry Kai but you may need to ditch it for a new one or at least one that hasn't been bent.

Quick update, Jay qualified my pre '82 GSX 1166 in 3rd spot out of 111 entries. Unfortunately it must have had a slight carb blockage on one cyl, as it ran lean & melted a hole in a piston, so not a major drama really.
He is now on Pete Smiths pre 89 GSXR1100 & also qualified that in 3rd behind two RC 30's on his first attempt on the bike.

I guess even if not going to Paeroa it will pay to look at the brake setup and ensure it is operating as expected..
Will photo/pull ours apart and then see whats up with ours - we think its the right setup as when I lost one master cylinder (siezed up) the other one still operated.. was just a bit harder to stop!

they had total failure of one of their lines which would've produced no back pressure on that master cylinder, if yours had seized it to my thinking would've had back pressure so the bias would've then moved to the other cylinder so maybe you want to have a lookseee again and see whether it would work in their situation

Yip, fair point. Will be looking at mine.
My master cyl had siezed at the bottom of its travel.. so kind of like all the fluid going?
Anyway, agip bikes setup is a bit tired and worn so will be looking at it among other things. Head up to ChCh work on it for a good few days next week.

The setup i have allows for total failiure of either masteer cylinder and the brakes.still work. The balance bar has a fixed centre pivot point, so either master cylinder could fall off and i would still have a fulcrum for the bar to pivot on.

Nice, ol' Phil recons his dads rally/targa mini's have a cool setup and can't (shouldn't) fail either. Will have a geez at our options next week..

So whos keen to be a passenger for a novice at the national rounds at hampton and taupo including the fridays before hand?
My swinger that will normally be on doesn't want to fork out for a race licence to compete in 2 rounds so need to find someone else to jump on, would prefer someone with experince as i have no idea what i'm doing haha

Our brakes did exactly what they were designed to do in the event of one line failing, not work altogether. There were no further faults in the system & basically, it was like one kid jumping off the see saw when he is at the bottom, the other one goes straight to the floor.
The suggested fix needs to be worked through a little more thoroughly & Nev I & others are working on what is the best solution.
Im all for something being done, as long as its the right thing & well thought out.
Gotta take your hat of to Ian, he is seriously into our safety.

Our bias adjuster is being fitted with a limit plate, to stop it piloting around so far that the other master still has pressure no matter what.
We've also read the rule to mean, the backup brake has to work completely independent, and fitted a real serious hand operated front brake. Brembo for the win!

I didn't think that rule was around anymore.. most bikes don't have a back up brake.
Agip bike has a 4 pot caliper and chunky AP master cyl running the hand brake.. Althought we took it off. Must re-fit them.. When it works it should be able to lock the front up pretty easy. Hopefully it was the brake dragging that was causing the fluid to boil and lack of pressure for the hand brake.
