I didn't think that rule was around anymore.. most bikes don't have a back up brake.
Agip bike has a 4 pot caliper and chunky AP master cyl running the hand brake.. Althought we took it off. Must re-fit them.. When it works it should be able to lock the front up pretty easy. Hopefully it was the brake dragging that was causing the fluid to boil and lack of pressure for the hand brake. The rule that Spyda (I think) quoted earlier in this very thread, still reads that a second system is required.
I would argue the rule to the contrary, but it suits a purpose I have in mind where the stand alone front system has an advantage for me.
We are all motivated by selfishness at the end of the day, after all.:shifty:

haha.. tell that to all the bikes who don't have a hand brake.. we have one already.

haha.. tell that to all the bikes who don't have a hand brake.. we have one already. There's an argument to be made, that if the bias adjuster cannot simply go down the path of least resistance and not actuate the other master, then it is "it's own system".
But it is still worked from the same lever, so it is not a strong argument.

It shouldnt be hard to work out. Both the outfit that did it & the guy in the crowd that it hit will be out there racing at Paeroa. Im sure someone can fill in the blanks. Oh, the rider, Westie, in that crash will probably be spannering for Nick Cole or a Honda superbike, name avoids me at the mo.

Ask me...I was there. It was Westie and the year was 1992. We came around the hairpin to see the tail end of the accident as he and Cameron Smith disappeared off to the right hand side through the fencing (made of panels from packing crates from the Toyota assembly plant in Thames). The reason for the crash was a broken steering rod from memory and he was desperately trying to steer out of it. Westie ended up head down in amongst the fairing and front wheel when he hit a corner brick wall which was the entrance to a shop. Cam ended up skittling a bystander and broke the guys leg. He was okay, although Graeme Cole and I thought Westie was dead because he wasn't moving he actually walked away unharmed apart from cuts and bruises. Robby Shorter has just rebuilt that sidecar and I'll be Safety Scrutineering it tomorrow night so he can race it again at this coming Paeroa :eek: hope thats not a repeat:facepalm:

You've been around a while swarfie. A sidecar went into the crowd at Porirua in practice, round about 1977/78.Was the second circuit they used there, more towards the industrial area. I think a child was killed. Know of that one ?

You're right Kick, the whole system is flawed. You gunna write up new remits for the AGM?
As it is, you could do 3 weekends of racing motocross, trials, buckets, and then go racing Nationals on either a sidecar (or even be a passenger) or on a superbike! Dumb!
3 meetings in 12 months is also dumb (cause Monique said it was...), as what would be better, 3 meets in 12 months - say 1 hour each meeting (3 hours in a whole year), or you spending a whole day testing, practicing without anyone else on the track?
Why can't a test/practice day suffice for experience?
And before anyone says you're not up against other people racing and gaining experience, who says others aren't at the test day also? Also, who says they're gunna be fast enough to race with other teams at National level anyway?
The biggest thing is experience in the class they are competing in.
What if a newbie brought a machine 2 months before the Nats? How could they get 3 meets under their belt?
Doing a full test day, then being inspected by a steward and experienced racer on their first practice on the friday before a National meeting would be ok?
Grumph

Doing a full test day, then maybe being inspected by a steward/experienced racer on their first practice on the friday before a National meeting would be ok?
Yeah, chairs are a problem as far as experience goes...in the NI at present. My first race meeting was NZ airfield champs ie, Lady Wigram Trophy against Ron Grant, Perry, Discombe etc, etc...you could do it then.
The "test day" "ride day" culture now is producing a heap of guys and girls too who won't go one step further and get a comp licence and actually come dancing...
I think chairs may have a case for observed riding at a test day to count toward licence. Solos on the other hand I'd say no...When the ride day guys do rarely turn out at a race meeting they have time management problems - Never on the grid on time. Also without exception they've never read the rulebook...Rant over.

Wasn't a rant at all. All makes sense. And I think is a better way to go IMO. Just as we have technical inspectors, why can't we have license observers?
If someone rides like shit, it aint gunna happen. Period.
Also, 1 whole day of testing for a passenger is far better than 3 hours in a year...... So why couldn't passengers race at National level after 1 track day?
Afterall, passengers aren't controlling the positioning of the chair on the track. And if they can do a whole test day, then they can do a 10 lap race!

yip good points. Phil and I did at least one decent test day, maybe even 2 before our first race outing (Can't remember).. which was just a wee 3 sidecar club meet in the rain. the 2nd meeting was wet as well, and then 2 rounds of puna and then hampers and wangas. I think it was the perfect way to ease into it. and then nats and here we are now

I obviously know they help the machine get around, but I was referring to actual placement on the track - they don't decide which line to take. ie. safely going up the inside into a corner, or going around the outside without hitting the passed rig..... the passenger is there for the ride.... doesn't matter if he's done 25 years, or 25 minutes, he doesn't control the positioning, so exactly what experience does he/she need?? Other than sheer guts and strength? 1 test day is better than 3 stamps for a passenger in IMO....

or what line out of a corner the machine will be in Well suppose you were coming around the sweeper at Ruapuna and Bob was bored shitless and decided to hop off the back because it's close the clubhouse and by the time he stopped sliding he'd only have to hop over the wall and be able to get himself a beer, pretty sure he would have decided what line you'd be taking by doing that

That wasn't hover we got Drew - it's called chair lift or two pointing...... it's what short bikes do, as opposed to "Hover" done by stupidly expensive long machines.... when they get 2 inches off the ground.......
See, the first time you ever swung on a chair............... did you have 3 stamps??? From memory, we also won the "Demonstration Race"....

Did your dragging behind it make me alter my lines?? Did we veer off the track because of it?? Did the two pointing ('cause your skinnier than Bob - just) make me change my lines?? Did I brake earlier than I would have with Bob??

You read too much into swinging kick. You don't need to be Arnold Swarkopfeneggermonkeyspanker either. Good strong wrists and a total understanding of what/where/how we are doing is a vital key, as is anticipation of an impending manuevour. Relaxing too, is just as important as 100% dedicated concentration.
I look at alot of passengers out there, and they are simply over-swinging.

Drew swung on his first attempt on my chair at 98% race pace - he was dragged ('cause I tried to drag him) but he never fell off and never made me change my lines. I wanted to scare him - and I think I did.... maybe??

MNZ rules:
5.2.5 One Event Licences:
One Event Licences can be issued to competitors at Club Events. These licences cannot be used at the following events; New Zealand or Island Championships, Street Racing.
5.2.9 A sidecar combination competing in any competition other than Record attempts must carry a passenger. Passengers are deemed to be competitors and must have the appropriate current licence.
22.8.15 Before competing in a Street Race or National Points Road Race meeting in any Championship class, a rider must have competed in at least three lower road race circuit events. Proof of this shall be from entries in the riders log book. Only senior licence holders may compete on street circuits.
So rule 5.2.9 Passengers are deemed to be competitors (but they are not defined as a rider), so they need a current licence. BUT, rule 22.8.15 says a rider must have competed in at least 3 lower road race events........ It doesn't state a passenger must.

All LCR's fail the ground clearance check too, as their rear suspension upright is too close.

27.8.4 A lanyard type spring-loaded switch must be mounted on the handlebar,

or upper body in such a manner as to not inhibit or impede the Drivers
movement while competing.
This switch must interrupt the main ignition circuit in addition to cutting
power to any fuel / oil pumps fitted to the vehicle in the event that the Driver
is thrown from the machine, and must be operated by a suitable cable or
extendable wire (like a coiled telephone cable) with a fully extended length of

I am building a pre '82 Katana 1100 to replace what Jay is currently riding & as a result, I have a full standard braking system on the shelf that has been replaced by a Brembo system. I have mounted some of it on the Pink bike, with a Katana front caliper on the r/f disc, a braided hose & Katana master cyl, which looks right at home on the sloping handlebar.
I have not had to drill or cut anything at all on the outfit, the new caliper braket uses the existing caliper mounting bolt holes, just with longer bolts.

maybe not but to they use the MNZ rules as a guideline to ensure that it is run to a set of known rules... so my bet is that no tech inspection no racey racey
Dude, it might be safe to raised your view of me just a smidge.
The chair Will comply before we ride it. It just won't have a tag till the have a go day.

To make it fair you need to put a standard head back on one side and use your knee to block the intake

Hi Spyda,
At a non-MNZ meeting, there is only a requirement for scrutineering, not a technical inspection.
Drew could run a turbo, knobbly tyres, have handles 6 feet wider than the chair, airconditioning, sun visors, have a horn on it, carry a bar fridge, and even fit stubbie holders if he wanted too. He could also offset his engine to the side car deck, and play bingo whilst he competes against the clock too......
:woohoo:
I assume you think Drew is only slightly smarter than a long bike rider............
He's a shorty pilot - 7 rungs further up the ladder......

that depends entirely on the insurance companies requirements and what the club chooses to do and varies from meet to meet i'm picking...

what rule have they changed?
RULE:
Sidecars shall be fitted with at least two efficient brakes operation on at least two of the wheels, with at least two separate operational circuits irrespective of their method of operation. If one system fails the other system shall work efficiently.
The way I see it, is if one of your master cylinders fails, why should we be having to open the bleed nipple on the good caliper to see if there is no impediment to its operation? What the rule says is if one fails, the other shall work. It doesn't say to render that one useless also.
The pedal travel in most sidecars when both cylinders fail is probably about 6-10 inches at the foot. So cutting a massive amount of space out behind the foot is only going to give the passenger somewhere to rest his knee or foot and impede the brake pedal.....
Also, the rule says two separate systems. How is using a common lever and a common lever pivot point separate?? If the lever snapped (my torque arm did) or the lever pivot bolt wound out or broke, you automatically have a ride to the hospital.
Oh, the rule also says each cylinder is to have it's own reservour too. Most don't.
Also, who says a rear and side brake will slow you enough to avoid an accident? Ever tried slowing a sports bike from 200km using only the rear brake?
There's also the problem of fitting an emergency front brake to the chair. Most emergency brakes won't stop you in the pits! But if you have one, it negates having to worry about the shared foot master cylinder issue.
I'm all for absolute safety, but I would have thought a little more nutting out of this should have been required before we are told that you will not get to race.

I read the rule, to mean each brake has to operate at least two wheels. Which is slightly problematic.
Anyway, the rule is apparently unchanged. They just intend to enforce it again. Which fucks a lot of long chairs right up.
Completely separate operation is easy, fitting another slave to rear or chair wheel is inviting some dodgy engineering in a lot of cases I'll bet. Not for us though, we've got that shit covered!
