Mo's still in Richmond, Nelson. He moved a while back so i don't have a number now but the pub at lunchime will find him...
The annual outing to the GP at Ruapuna seems to be his only trip outside Nelson now. I must come along on the Friday to see his reaction....
Maybe it should be a formal thing...all the guys who know him at an unveiling ?
Haha im keen for an unveiling :) I'll see if I can dig up a number but maybe just wait until the GP at Ruapuna - the bike is going to be up on the North Island until then anyway :) Old Mo should come on kiwibiker haha!
Looks bloody mint. I wouldn't get too worried about a sticker that is a bit wobbly, most people are only going to see it from a distance and at speed anyway. Excellent job, can't wait to see it in the flesh. Cheers :D
You should ask him for a loan of the AGIP leathers haha.. I bet he isn't 6 foot tall.. might be a squeeze. Would be cool though!
fuck that, would you let anyone you know get in those! David Attenborough could do a Doco series on what probably lives and has lived in those...
lol... yum
picture of sidecar ready to go*
shit yea, better fire it up and get some oil temp up!
Yeah, because you would only need one set then.
Eddie, Take another look at that old clip that ends with the Scrivy crash (I had nothing to do with it) & see the deck extension on the Agip outfit that extends behind the rear wheel. For some reason it has been removed over the years & I wonder if it should be re fitted.
It seemed to work quite well & I dont think you will find another passenger anywhere, that got as far right & as far left as Vince did, he was an extremely comitted passenger.
The thing is, that people buy a NZ title winner, as was the case with the Agip outfit, & then think they can make it faster with some hair brained mods, in their first ever year on sidecars.
I suspect it stems from people thinking that they should be faster than they are & blaming the equipment, before they even begin to grasp the basics of how it all works.
Yea, we noticed that platform out the back a while back.. I'll ask Vince about it maybe, Dave and Vince were still racing it when it was modified and the back platform was removed, it was about the time they switched from that 1100ish CC motor to the 1000cc water cooled unit it has now old FZR unit.. We thought maybe the platform put too much weight out back and unloaded the front wheel. Anyway will ask about it :)
we are all about going as fast as the bike can go - we know (think) its already set up pretty fairly well so we just leave it alone and try and learn how to ride it :D (plus the suspension/chassis has a decent range of adjustments that I know nothing about.. so best to leave it alone for now haha)
But I know what your saying here "& then think they can make it faster with some hair brained mods, in their first ever year on sidecars.
I suspect it stems from people thinking that they should be faster than they are & blaming the equipment, before they even begin to grasp the basics of how it all works.." haha sounds kinda like the other Mo bike we have racing down here :D

If you knew a bit about passengering then last thing you need to aim for is to be as far right and as far left as one can. Vince used to tell me I wasn't doing it right, funny thing is for him to see that we had to be in front of him, it use to fuck him and Dave Beresford off when I'd give them the fingers through the esses at Wanganui.
Vince didn't understand the first rule in racing in the old days (and still applicable nowadays), and that was that the drive wheel needs to have the best traction possible, after all isn't the goal of racing to be the quickest and when your wheels spinning it's wasted traction. Classic you'll probably find on you tube for example is He used to jump in the deck coming out of the Paeroa hairpin as soon as the bike straightened up spreading his lard across the rear and the sidewheel approx 50% on each. You could hear and see the thing wheelspinning into fourth gear and maybe more when the done thing to do is apply all of your lard over the rear wheel until it wasn't wheelspinning, forget the sidecar wheel as ideally that should be airborne unless underbrakes or in righthanders. The sidecar wheel is toed in so in a straight line creates drag; drag isn't procative for racing is it really?
Thing is at Paeroa they won so no point in saying anything, and why tell the opposition how improve eh?

Maybe they wanted to lay big long black lines and still win whilst having fun................ I know someone else that likes to do that also...... :shifty:
As Bob said at a sidecar riders brief one year - "If you can lift the sidewheel, or wave to the spectators while racing, then do it....." (Even if it does slow you down)
Me thinks they were obviously way faster than their competition at that time and place........ so they could afford to have fun..... and the biggest thing about street meetings, that the spectators enjoy the display, and even more important, they'll be back to watch the following year..... hopefully!

Me thinks they were obviously way faster than their competition at that time and place........ maybe at paeroa (i used Paeroa as an example as that's on you tube), not so everywhere else, my point is he had one position for 95% of left handers, as far off as he could get when often he only needed to go part way to keep the wheel low and get as much traction through the rear wheel, be quicker through the corner, higher exit speed and less energy expended too.
A lot of swingers simply don't sit down and work out what they need to do, they just think it's as far left and as far right.
Take a look at tony price for example, he had a few clues about how to do it well too.

? no.. my bikes in chch but I live in Dunedin and used Dunedin signwriter..
why would he need to measure the bike. I drew out/sketched where all the stickers would go/look like on the primered fairings and then measured everything and gave them a list of instructions. (ie, Team, height of capitol T 140mm, length of word 350mm) etc. for each sticker.
anyway - it ended up looking all good to me so who cares?
edit: I get ya, about transporter lol. nope no one measured the bike or asked its dimensions :) I know how wide it is.. no one asked. They said they were bringing a truck so I assumed they were not concerned about size

Read this real slow now Eddie.
The bike didn't fit in the bike tranz unit
the signwriting was the incorrect size
maybe the person who measured the bike to see whether it fitted in the bike tranz trailer was the signwriter cause they both got it wrong?

haha - and still you didn't get the point - who cares what the measurements were specifically for the signwriting. I told signwriter to make sticker 140mm high, he gave me 100mm high. etc. the problem was, I asked for 140 and he didn't give me 140. but in the end it looks good i recon, pretty close to the photos I have - close enough to get the jist of it.

Well almost true............... sometimes Bob moves in a bit, so I can get extra chair lift to cut a corner, to get a better run for the next corner - the dipper at Ruapuna for example, or even turn 3 at Taupo.
Or he sits in the middle, but way further forward, so we get more rear wheel sliding for a higher speed right hander like turn 3 at the Creek.
I am blessed to have such a 'thinking' passenger on my rig, as most of the time he just knows where the best place to be is. If it doesn't work, I don't have to tell him, he already knows! He makes it look easy. And believe me, it aint!
Over the years, I've watched and listened to numerous teams nut out a lap of a circuit. Me and Bob just know! Eastern Creek for example - never seen the circuit, 1 warm up lap, 1 flying lap, and that's all we got last year, 1 lap! Qualified 4th out of 29 - behind 3 LCR's! Poor Bob never even got a chance to even view the circuit direction, but was in the right place at the right time for each corner (except turn 8.....:shifty:). LEGEND!! :niceone:

Don't see anything wrong with it, there's a video called "On any other Sunday" shot in the UK club scene which has some good instructional stuff in it about swinging on different outfits
Even with the two long outfits I've spent time on there were major differences between them so there's no "one size fits all"
Best thing I found in my first couple of years was following similar outfits and watching what the more experienced guys did

Looks fucking mint, I see you've ditched the 12 year + old tyres, few bits of tube been cut off and looks like master cylinder mount swapped back across to the left
There's a hole in the chassis where a crossover for the gear change used to run, did the later motor bolt up to the earlier mounts? front one looks a bit more substantial than what was on there
I'd be surprised if it needs the damper, we took the one off that it originally had

naw jealous.. looks mint! i like the rims.. alloys?
what sorta motor?
Theyre three piece Halliday's. NZ made I think. Heaps of sidecars had them twenty odd years ago.
You can buy lighter wheels that arent as flimsy from your local tyre shop for less than they cost now.
The motor is the ZX10 from the ex Scrivy, Porteous (aus) bulit outfit. Multiple NZ & Aussie national title holder.

Alloy rims, but they're an arse because you have to unbolt the wheel centres and split them to change the tyres
What would you know about changing those tyres? They were last replaced when you were about twelve.

I swapped the master cylinders inboard as they probably cost more than I payed for the chassis, and I dont want to rip them off going around the outside of scrivy at turn 1 at hampsters.
The engine mounts are the same, just have new bolts, and since we are in the '90's I changed them to metric. The frame needed to be modified to clear the carbs, and the front oil line. The motor has righthand side gear shaft (actually it goes both ways).
I need a steering dampner, I have the arms of an 8 year old girl.
what sorta motor?
The motor is Dip and Biscuit's old one, they repowerd their sidecar with an 08 ZX10, its an 89 ZX10. Its got a couple of go fast bits, like new sparkplugs, and an orange rocker cover.
Andrew Scrivener might know a little bit about it, I think it used to belong to him at some stage.
they look like the 1 alloy I have on my agip bike.. it looks like a 2 piece hotwire rim.. if only I had more of them haha think I've got 8/9 rims lying around. 6 have got tyres on.
1 rim is no good to you, you may as well give it to me (lets call it rent for sleeping in my van) :sunny: And I believe they are 3 piece Halliday rims, and Warrick is right, they are a prick to change tyres on until you get your missus with the reacharound fisting action to help.

A guy in Ohaupo near Hamilton bought the whole outfit just for the motor to put in some Kawasaki pre '89 bike.
Thought he said ZX10, but could be wrong.
I found the chassis accidentaly while looking for some 35mm CR's that I think you gave me a lead on.
Ended up buying new ones, but saved this chassis from being scrapped in the process.

Several entries have already been recieved. We have until Nov 2nd until close of entry. The organisers will meet with a NZSRA representative the week following the Barry Sheene, at which point we will be in a better position to judge who has blown up & who has tipped over.
We WILL be racing at Wanganui, so get your entries in!!

And knocked off from Bikesport news
By John Watterson

Michael Dunlop was so captivated by his sidecar debut at Oliver's Mount that he pulled out of one of the superbike races after a single lap, explaining: 'The chairs are more fun.'
Dunlop, who has multiple TT winner Dan Sayle as passenger, got quicker every time he went out on Nick Crowe's LCR Honda, working hard to bring down his lap times, ultimately going sub-two minutes for the tight and demanding 2.43-mile woodland course.
“Despite a lot of slagging before the event from various individuals, Michael was as safe as houses,' said Sayle. "He went onto the grass once at the Monument and he struggled to get the hang of the bumps, but otherwise he was spot on."

Now that's a fork brace....Funny, I always understood that Vincent Girdraulics were pretty stiff torsionally, someone obviously disagrees..
I assume the front mudguard mount is also a lifting point as it's obviously meaty enough.
Looking at that reminds me, I turned down a ride on Les Dwight Snr's speedway Vinnie in 1970...and every speedway chair offered since.

Where you other fellas on the classics today?
Had a pretty awesome day today as usual, bike looking tight in its new colors we rocked up fairly early and set up.. Kick agreed to come on for practice qualifying.. did a couple laps before he corrected some of my lines and then tried to go out again but airbox fell off and also the oil catch tray fell off (sadly these were both parts we specifically worked on last night while repairing exhaust, gave the oil catch tray an extra couple bolts that were missing and used some extra tie wire to hold airbox down) anyway.. we got the parts back on properly next time around.
First race started ok, good off the line compared to rest but then got stuck in 1st gear.. took a couple of attempts to grab 2nd gear and by then i was in 3rd place.. harris bike was being piloted by a couple first timers so for once I wasn't the slowest :D tried to grab onto the back of AJ but the bike was handling real strange and was wrestling with it. By the last lap swinger is tapping me frantically and looking scared while pointing at the wheels. I finished the race naturally, and later found out the wheel nuts had come very.. very loose. mmmm...
2nd race was ok, we were a little worried that everything seemed to be falling off the bike so we just circulated around.. was ok, bike felt a bit better and started practicing some better lines that Kick told me to take.
Third race had got comfortable with kicks lines and we managed a 1:55 lap.. which we were happy with! and had a f*ckn blast on the last race!!
Good day all round.. Now its hampsters next on the calendar.. Awaiting bike tranz to pick the yella terra up.
The AGIP colors were a bit of a conversation starter through out the day too it was choice, even had the NZ Agip rep come up to me at end of the day and ask who I was and asked about the bike etc and said he'd make sure local Agip supplier will look after us (they already do, cheers TransDiesel CHCH) and got to yarn to a few ppl about the limited nz sidecar racing history I know (fuck all.. lol)

That was a PMSL situation!!
The BMW solo has standard Staintune street mufflers on it & consequently, the loudest part of it is the wind noise, so it was suggested I should shout as i went past the stands at upward of 160k, to see if they could hear me. Yes, apparently they could hear me, over in the back paddock too.
UCM = upright cornering manuvere, something one becomes quite proficent in with two big fat cylnders poking out the side.
3rd in Open Modified class wasnt too bad an effort for a standard road bike minus lights though!!

Kick's right - learn to ride it to it's max first. FZR's can be a bit peaky depending on what's been done to them...I can give you as much peak power with a better midrange if it's necessary but until you've had more time on it, don't bother.

At HD the easiest track in the country to swing on?? I fucking doubt it, unless of course you're swerving erratically side to side across the entire width of the track the entire lap

The chichane at turns 9/10 was gone - so you could straight line it, and the end of the drag strip chicane was the fast esses - no big tyre bundle in the way........ :wait::facepalm:

definitely, I think the bike can get around plenty quicker as it is, even without new tyres its got plenty more to give. Heaps still to learn.

two laps with that rough cunt hereafter known as Kai and I was fucked, I've spent the last 4 years on one outfit and I couldn't find handles and shit was in the wrong place, got Kai to pull in after two to discuss a couple of corners then headed back out only to have the airbox fall off
hehe, i was a bit erratic n rough on our first couple of laps.. despite the wheels, airbox and oil tray coming loose the bike felt mint with you on the chair.. probably why I forgot to give you a moment to get used to the bike and just started throwin it around as soon as we were on the track! oops
next time I'll be more onto it.

Has it had any motor work done since you had it or recently before you got it? (Warwick, you'd probably know more from before this guy got it).
I ask because the shit box we rode that was GSXR1100 powered, monstered your bike everywhere that throttle was applied, so there might actually be some power hiding there.

Look at you concuring in your Pashmina. Hey I owe you some bruises seeing as Gordy bruised my missus. We counted 12 last night, & one was in a fairly odd place. I think theres some explaining to do.

nah not that I know of, I started swinging on this bike a few years ago, i doubt the engine has had any modifications or tuning to it recently (or ever, i have some spare parts for it, all standard parts, standard ignition, standard carbs.. crap exhaust, crap airbox.) When I was swinging for AJ we eventually swapped to a long bike and then this bike was sitting in aj's shed until I bought it/paid it off over the first half of this year. I've def not done anything to it except fill it up with AGIP oil n brake fluid ;) and filled in some holes and breaks in the exhaust.
it gets monstered by all the other bikes under power.. but she's all right

Nope, nothing done to it since Jay rode it, Kai has had more time riding it than Jay ever got though

Ok technical question time Scrivy (not that you know shit) Kai has problems on lefts with it understeering as the chair lifts, how does he fix it?

True, but going off the lap times what I'm saying still stands. An FZR1000 should walk away from a GSXR1100, even if Leanne wasn't wrong in thinking it was big blocked. Particularly given how heavy that thing we rode was.
I'm all for listening to you guys about learning to ride them before making them faster, but in this case there might be an argument that it's not making even the standard power that it should be.

I know nothing about chairs, but if it was a car, I'd be adding some pre-load to the rear spring.
