The Republican strategy, clearly, is to undermine and delegitimize the impeachment inquiry. Republicans are portraying the inquiry as a hoax and an attempted coup by Democrats desperate to reverse the results of the 2016 election, unrelated to any actual presidential wrongdoing. The White House’s refusal to cooperate with Congress by sending legal representation to the impeachment hearings was explained by Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway as resistance to “colluding with an illegitimate process”.

Why are Republicans taking this approach? Largely because they have no other choice, given the considerable weight of evidence that the president did in fact abuse his power and obstruct Congress, as charged in the impeachment articles.
The poet Carl Sandburg is credited with saying: “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.
In the short term, then, the Republican strategy of stonewalling and counter-accusations may pay off. The votes on impeachment in the House and removal in the Senate will almost certainly break along uniform party lines, making it easier for Republicans to portray the process as driven entirely by partisanship.
In the longer term, however, the Republican approach to impeachment will probably prove counterproductive.
The party’s critical weakness, as revealed by the 2018 midterm elections, is that it has lost the support of the college-educated and mostly suburban voters (especially women) who once used to reliably vote Republican. By attempting to sabotage the impeachment process and refusing to address the substance of Trump’s actions, the Republican party will further damage its image with these voters and make it even harder to regain a governing majority.
For all these reasons, Republicans in Congress, by turning the impeachment crisis into a circus, are likely to further alienate the swing voters who cost the party control of the House in 2018 (and may deprive it of Senate control in 2020).

Republican approach to the impeachment inquiry appeared recently in the judiciary committee testimony of the George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, who was the sole legal expert called by Republicans. conceded that Trump’s phone call to the Ukrainian president “was anything but perfect”
Recently, the Republican congressman Francis Rooney of Florida demanded that several members of Trump’s administration with direct knowledge of the president’s orders on Ukraine – including the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo; the acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney; and Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani – testify in the impeachment hearings.

“Firsthand accounts like these,” Rooney said, “would affirm that the impeachment process is seeking substantive outcomes based on real facts and accurate information, rather than reflecting a more political objective.”
Republicans appear locked into their strategy of trying to dismiss impeachment as a partisan sham, despite the likelihood that this will make it harder to win back college-educated suburban swing voters. In hindsight, Republicans may come to feel that this play for short-term political advantage came at too high a cost.

Husaberg has been reading his stuff since 2010. I've been reading it since he arrived in 2005, it's not like we don't know what to expect. He used to post safety related comments, but his manner was terrible and detracted from what could have been a positive contribution.

He used to bang on about situational awareness but had ninety demerit points IIRC which would indicate that his own situational awareness wasn't all that shit hot.

He sees conspiracies everywhere and he always wants an inquiry. A significant proportion of threads he starts take a shortcut to pink Hell. It seems ages since he posted anything sensible or positive. I met him once and he seemed normal, but that was a long time ago.

Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer who is accused of leading a shadow foreign policy in Ukraine, defied a congressional subpoena Tuesday for documents that House Democrats sought as part of the impeachment inquiry.
Giuliani joins a growing list of White House and Trump administration officials who have refused to testify before Congress or have been blocked from doing so by the administration, including U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland, who was blocked from testifying Tuesday.

When the former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani emerged as one of Donald Trump’s most bareknuckle defenders during the Russia investigation, attacking his former colleagues in the justice department, people asked: “What happened to Rudy?”
Now, as federal prosecutors tighten a net of criminal investigations around Giuliani, the question has become: “What is going to happen to Rudy?”
The net tightened again last week when it emerged a grand jury had issued a broad subpoena for documents relating to Giuliani’s international consulting business as part of an investigation of alleged crimes including money laundering, wire fraud, campaign finance violations, making false statements, obstruction of justice, and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

But in no version of events does Giuliani appear not to be in big trouble.

The immediate source of his current problems is the work he did in Ukraine over the last two years for himself and on behalf of Trump, who instructed the Ukrainian president to speak to Giuliani in a 25 July phone call.
Giuliani wanted the Ukrainians to announce an investigation of Joe Biden, Trump’s chief political rival, according to US officials who testified in the impeachment hearings. In pursuit of his errand, Giuliani contacted current and former Ukrainian prosecutors, multiple Ukrainian presidential administrations and multiple Ukrainian oligarchs, according to testimony.
Prosecutors are investigating whether Giuliani offered the oligarchs help with their problems with the US justice department in exchange for help with his project to harm Biden, a charge Giuliani has denied.
In a telephone interview with the Guardian, in response to a question about whether he was nervous that Trump might “throw him under a bus” in the impeachment crisis, Giuliani said: “I’m not, but I do have very, very good insurance, so if he does, all my hospital bills will be paid.”In an interview with disgraced former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly last Tuesday, however, Trump distanced himself from Giuliani.

Now that Trump has been impeached by the House of congress, Unlike Nixon who quit prior to being impeached, he can never be pardoned for these crimes. He cannot pardon himself , and he cannot be pardoned by a future president.
Even if a subsequent president wanted to pardon Trump they can not.
Article II, section 2 of the constitution gives a president the power to pardon anyone who has been convicted of offenses against the United States, with one exception: “in Cases of Impeachment.”

There was continuous collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian oligarchs. Mueller said he could not establish conspiracy with the Russian Government. By which he meant he couldn't prove it in court. The Russians were mainly mates of Putin, you can't be an oligarch and not be, but OK, convincing a jury is complicated.

Mueller basically said Junior wasn't prosecuted because he was too stupid. Normally we understand that ignorance of the law is no excuse. In some areas of the law in the US though, it's necessary to prove intent. Election law is one such, and Mueller said he couldn't prove that Junior knew what he was doing.

That thing about not prosecuting a sitting president is only an opinion from the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC). The thought was that the president is too busy to be tied up in court. Of course that was normal presidents who actually went to work before 11.00AM. The OLC is part of the Justice Dept normally occupied with checking that new laws being passed are not in conflict with existing laws. These days a lot of their time is taken up with trying to explain why the latest illegal shit Trump is doing is not illegal. That opinion could be changed, but not while Barr runs the Justice Dept.

Impeachment is not a one time thing. It's highly likely more Trump crimes will come to light and the Dems can impeach him again. They can use the 10 obstruction charges any time they like.

Trump denied knowing racehorse trader and high-rolling gambler, Robert LiButti, who is said to have had ties to John Gotti, when probed by the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1991. But LiButti’s daughter, Edith Creamer, told Yahoo News in 2016 that is simply not true, and that Trump knew very well who her father was, and that she and her father had both flown with Trump in his helicopter. It was also reported that Trump took an interest in LiButti’s daughter, prompting the high-roller to threaten the future president to stay away, or suffer the loss of his, uh, crown jewels, so to speak. Even more damning, there’s a video of LiButti and Trump attending the “WrestleMania IV” event together in 1988.

Trump almost bought a $500,000 racehorse from LiButti, but backed out at the last minute, according to Yahoo, and once personally handed the alleged mob affiliate a $350,000 check while he was gambling at a craps table in Trump’s casino.

Michael Cohen & Felix Sater

Cohen’s uncle, Morton Levine, ran Brooklyn social club El Caribe, which was frequented by members of Italian-American and Russian-American organized crime families in the 1970s and 1980s. Leaders of the Russian mob, Evsei Agron and Marat Balagula, were known for using the club as their personal office and handled their “business” there for years.

Cohen also has close ties with Felix Sater, a Russian-born investor, connected to both the New York and Russian mafia, whom Cohen has known since childhood. Sater’s father was also "a reputed capo in the Mogilevich organized crime syndicate," Talking Points Memo reported in 2018. Despite his mob connections, Sater is also said to have been an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigations and an asset for the Central Intelligence Agency.

Once a stockbroker, Sater lost his license in the 1990s for participating in a mob-linked plot to inflate marginal stocks and unload them onto unsuspecting investors and hiding the profits abroad, The Wall Street Journal reported in 2016. The former broker was convicted of racketeering and sentenced to prison. He also spent time in prison, for slamming the stem of a martini glass into a man’s face during a bar fight.

The former attorney worked with Sater on a Trump Tower deal in Moscow, while Trump was on the campaign in 2015.Though, Trump has denied knowing Sater in the past, there is conclusive evidence that he worked for the Trump Organization as a broker for years. In emails to Cohen, Sater boasted about having ties to Russian President Vladamir Putin, saying that he would solidify the real estate deal in Russia that Trump’s organization was pursuing with the president’s help – and help secure Trump the presidency. There is no evidence that Sater ever delivered on his promises. The Trump Tower Moscow deal eventually fizzled out and since the news of Sater’s involvement in Trump’s Russia dealings emerged he has practically vanished from the public eye.

Iran is not like other Middle Eastern nations. They have a modern airforce, a large and well equiped army, they have submarines, ballistic missiles, and they are current with cyber warfare.

Both Bush and Obama considered an attack on Soleimani, who certainly earned the attention, but ultimately they decided that the risks outweighed the benefits. Trump doesn't actually 'consider' anything, he acts on impulse.

With Trump there's a tweet for everything, there are a series of tweets accusing Obama of starting a war with Iran to save his presidency. Given that it's only Congress has the power to declare war, it's possible that the idiot in chief has committed another impeachable offence.

Only three presidents have been impeached, Trump could be the first to be impeached three times.

They have a few MIG 29s, a few Tomcats (Nice Aircraft but Obsolete, and without the Pheonix missile, not really much of a threat), F4 Phantoms (Vietnam....)

In fact, Iraq in the first Gulf War lost nearly as many MIGs as the Iranians currently have - Remind me again how well the Iraqi armed forces stood up.

The thought occurs that most of us know little of Iran and I was there but very briefly, just long enough to stick another pin on the map.

I've been following the travel blog "Itchy Boots" on YouTube, this series has been mentioned elsewhere on KB. In Series 1 Epsode 53 she crosses into Iran, the following few episodes detail her contacts with the people which are generally pleasant. The locals were exceptionally helpful when she struck mechanical problems. A marked contrast to what we see the press which is generally negative.

I agree actually. I think many of the Iranian people are probably fine (yet Golriz who we have here is not a shining example imo). Its these scumbags they have running the country that are the problem.

Trump sums it up brilliantly all round here actually.

If the iranian people are smart they will overthrow their muslim dictator overlords and take a step back to the 70's when they were a normal nation without an axe to grind.

That imo is Iran's only way out of all this. Eventually the USA will take them out one way or another. But it wont be under Trump.

The 1970's period you mention was when the USA had installed their puppet Shah. So hardly normal for Iran.
The fact that the USA had installed the very unpopular Shah is what gave the Iranian people the axe to grind. (in modern times context)

Btw, Trump has so many pressure points to push (leaking his tax returns for instance), that the powers that are really in charge - will have few problems forcing Trumps hand when they feel the time is right. Sad but true I'm afraid.

Another pressure point has received attention in the last day or so.

No US banks will deal with Trump, he is regarded as a bad risk, Deutsche Bank alone have been prepared to take that risk. Trump has defaulted on multiple Deutsche Bank loans. He also sued the bank. That history would not bode well for a future loan from Deutsche Bank, yet strangely they subsequently loaned him another 750 million dollars. This puzzled people who usually know about such things because that is seriously unusual banking behaviour. In 2016 it attracted the attention of the bank's board who ordered a report into the bank's business with Trump. It has also attracted the attention of the Attorney General of New York.

We have read previously the suggestion that this most recent loan was guaranteed by Russian oligarchs but apparently that is not quite right. A former Deutsche Bank employee now says that the 750 million was actually a loan from the Russian state bank, it was just funnelled through Deutsche Bank. Somewhat in the manner of a(nother) money laundering operation.

This is interesting because a presidential candidate not declaring a loan from the Russian government would be a serious impeachable offence. Yes, yet another one.

Perhaps that's why he phoned Putin to ask permission to assassinate an Iranian before he asked Congress?

No wonder Trump is trying to block access to his financial records.

Agreed, not much of an airforce really. But if it came to a boots on the ground conflict, I still would not like to be an American soldier there for what exactly? Certainly nothing worth dying for.

You mentioned a while back that Greta Thunbergs parents encouraged her into activism - interesting to read a article with actual quotes from her parents on said subject.

Yep, exactly what I was alluding too Pritch. Austin and Austin 2.0 will struggle with the concept of when a business man is denied funds, they will take what they can get from where ever they can get it just to stay afloat. And Trump was certainly undeniably in that position. So logically, if course that is would likely be the main reason he is soooo desperate to keep his tax records hidden. His position would be rendered untenable were they to be released - and he and his confides know it.
