Well it looks like no one is interested in joining me on a ride up through to the bay, nevermind. It's a pity though coz it's a pearler of a day over here. If anyone has a change of heart I will be leaving Dannevirke BP at 10ish o'clock, come have some fun:chase:

Well today was the day ... lesson with a master rider & work dinner ...

Several months ago Sugi kindly offered me a lesson on his holistic views on cornering, & a "date" was finally booked .. I have always enjoyed watching Sugi race/ride & love the effortlessness, smoothness & the lines he takes, to be as good is something I aspire too

So a plan was hatched .. :devil2:

turned up at 86's this morning typically in the shower again .. & after a few delays (phil turnbills was also on the agenda) & getting organised - a quick phone call to sugi to say we are on our way but umm gonna be a few hours later than we planned :oi-grr:

quite strong winds but a good comfy pace was set .. bout 10ks south of Dannivegas Betsy was sounding umm very loud hmm stopped for a quick check (thought she had hole in muffler) off we set & checked at petrol station, no hole but exhaust was very loose .. tightened the bolts by hand & figured Sugi would have some tools .. off we pootle ..

Well Sugi sure heard Betsy coming before he seen us or heard the daytona (Betsy decided she wasn't getting anywhere stripping so she would be heard today ) well after socket set had been put to work (thanks Anthony) she was back to her quieter self .. thank gawd cause I was getting a damn headache :Oi:

then it was off for the lesson ... awesome ... still digesting the information ..

ahh then the icing on the cake .. off to ride some back roads ending up in ormondville & back to dannivegas .. what sweet sweet sweet roads .. tons of twisties & plenty of time for me to digest some of the riding I had already done & info Sugi passed on .. ohh not to mention spectacular scenery !!!!!

then quick blat back out to Sugi's for coffee (where 86 generously handed the keys of the daytona to Sugi .. hey cowboyz 86 was then riding green  )... quick drink & back out on the bikes since time was short it was a steady pace back to palmy .. arrived 6.15pm - into shower & back out to my work do by 6.35pm (that would have to be a record)

work dinner attended, great food, plenty of laughs & quite a few margarita slushies later x6 now its time to mellow out & discuss the day ..

Thank you so much Sugi for the lesson, WOW, I definately have some stuff to work on & started on the ride & way home .. til the next one :niceone:

thanks to 86 for the company, & the bed for the nite ... its been an awesome day ..

Still Buzzing & the highlight .. well hands down going for a ride on the back of sugi's bike .. anyone who has had the priveledge will know what I am talking about .. only one word covers it ... SUBLIME.....

sounds like fun. I thought I saw a Daytona sneak past about 6pm. Meanie and Greenie sneaked up the valley to scout some more roads for dognbikes trip in November. Found some nice roads but alas they turn to gravel so have to save them for another day. Had a very nice relaxed ride up and back.

Well I had a freakin awesome day yesterday, Set out from Vegas shot out through Wimbildon, Porongahau, Wiapuk, Wiapawa, Pataugata, Elsthorpe, behind Te Mata peak over Cragy range through to Te Awanga, and had coffee with a mate there. Then into Hastings for a coffee there and on home down the main drag coz it was late. The roads were sensational once I got to Wimby and I can't believe how little traffic there was on the backroads. A great day on great roads with great weather.

Yep, those roads rock! One of my big faves is that section we did twice near my place, Nirvana! Hmmmmm, I have a few ideas how we could make a section like that perfect...would need a min of a 4 rider pose in order to making it work, 6 riders would be ideal! :devil2:

Well the route was pretty much back to shannon for me ..

but I really wanted to try a few twisties just to take in some of my lessons from yesterday .. hmmm ohh lets go saddle, Balance & track home .. tried twisting Cowboyz arm into coming out to play but a relaxation day was in order .. so 86 & I headed off in doubtful weather .. after a few showers & getting close to shannon what a ripper day it turned out to be .. :gob:

sooooooooooooooo where is a nice quiet road for some shots & video footage .. :devil2: I think there is some more video stuff for the "other" site .. cowboyz I will bring up on wed so you can compress it down

So cafe start for breakie .. & time to decompress with a cafe stop at the end & great to catch up with u4ea & young lad .. ahhhh summer is coming .. :D

wot have I learned this weekend ... I ride Betsy totally through my arms, on left hand bends my body is relaxed & get the flow .. right hand corners I tense completely head to feet, brace & brake hard .. (mental block about running out of room)

so how to fix it .. well one is being aware but not outhinking things ...

start being more concious of steering with my whole body not just my arms, I have decided that the Saddle, Balance & Track will be my new training ground .. & with daylight savings just around the corner wot a good way to blow out a few cobwebs than track that most nites ..

Once I started weighting the pegs more & utilsing my body I had a few corners that felt light & effortless .. but I guess its undoing the bad habits that I have gotten into to make all corners feel like that

Thanks so much Sugi for pointing me in the right direction it was totally awesome & today has just highlighted wot you wanted me to understand yesterday .. now to practice, practice, practice ...

& hopefully you will see some improvement by the next lesson :msn-wink:

They vulcanised mine after it had a part box cutter blade in it
I now carry a repair kit with me, plug tools and air canisters. I would have been handy to have around eh Btw whats wrong with the plugs Ive only ever had one flat tyre on a bike so a little in-experienced on that part

They vulcanised mine after it had a part box cutter blade in it
I now carry a repair kit with me, plug tools and air canisters. I would have been handy to have around eh Btw whats wrong with the plugs Ive only ever had one flat tyre on a bike so a little in-experienced on that part

Yes you would have come in VERY handy there Mr Meanie, maybe next time:doh: Nothing wrong with a plug as such but I could'nt have 100% faith in I don't think, gonna talk about it with Paul at PT's and see what he reckons. From the Dannevirke end, Maunga Rd is gravel from the Manawatu River Bridge (about 4 km North or Titatu) through to the Whetukura-Te Uri Road. Generally expect the metal will be pretty firm as ther is bugger all metal on the raod and the Council never grades it. The Te Uri Rd from Whetukura to about Maungatuna Rd is asphalt, there after metal to within 8km of Porongahau. Mangatuna Road is not a through Road - bridge in the middle has been shot for years. And Mangatuna Road does not connect to the loop road that joins Mangahei and Ngaparuru.

A good trip would be throught to the Te Uri Road, then either through to Porongahau via Mangarapa mainly on metal, or cut back toward Whetukura and Torere Road again through to Porongahau mainly on asphalt.

Met another Dannevirke rider last saturday before I set off on my trek, said his handle was Bazza I think, rides a ZX14. He's a dairy farmer so the rides tend to clash with his work but I told him he was welcome to join in on any of the rides when ever he can make it, he reckoned november was a better time for him to get out on the bike in the weekends. He also mentioned he was keen to do the Grand challenge this year, he did it year before last but missed last year.

If my bike was a bit more comfy like say.....yours and Meanies I would do the Rusty nuts I reckon but not on this bike, i'm absolutely shagged after the 600K taupo block so I think a thousand miler ain't gonna happen...Not on the Ace anyway:yes: On a Concours or a FJR13 i'd be in I reckon. The main Issue I have with distance is I get a sore throttle wrist pretty early and a sore backside after about 90k, it's all managable with fairly frequent stops and I don't think thats cool for a thousand miler, for that i think I need a bike with little to no weight on the wrists and a bigger more comfortable seat a la Concours/:yes:FJR13

plan for sat ..

well it would be kinda rude not to post a wee plan that developed .. great for those that want a wee poodle locally

both English's bike & betsy are sporting new rubber & so a wee scrub in session is planned ..

I will be leaving Palmy by 10.15am (meeting place BP on umm Rangatiki st ? I think) heading to feilding meeting dogs & english there leaving 11am.. heading out to kimbolton & then out to dogs back yard .. stop in for coffee & play on some of the roads coming back from his place .. may decide around ashhurst if we are doing saddle, ballance and track..

by that time we reckon the tires should be scrubbed in ... so a shortish blat that may be a few hours or more long but plenty of twisties & straight bits ..

Yeah 45 mins to Feilding sounds a bit optimistic allowing for jump starting bikes, running out of gas, refueling, eating, drinking, smoking, discussing the route, puting on gloves and helmet, etc. Think it took over an hour last time or felt like an hour anyway.

nods if the weather keeps fine the roads will be drier but it will be a quiet lil pootle to palmy/feilding anyway .. then i will have company for the real scrubbing bits ... makes me feel a bit better trying out a few corners with someone else there til i get the hang of new tires.

Are you gonna come on this ride into the Naki next saturday, that sounds like it's gonna be just shy of 800k, if I go it will be around the 850k+ mark from here. Sould go towards a training run for ya.

Not sure yet. I'm a bit worried about my front tyre - I want it to do the 1000 miler but not sure if it will, especially if I keep on faniging it right up to the day. Do not want to fail scruitineering  and not sure how easy it is to find a tyre in Taupo on Saturday morning!

Went back to Phils and got those gloves and then had a little ride (not 800k's - just under 300). Will blog it at some stage. Great day out - even in Danniverke. :msn-wink:

Dam you thinking about new tyres already
Might be worth fitting new tyres for the 1000m just in case, you can always put the old ones back on
Just be careful whoever changes your tyres to tell them those air sensors in the rims are very fragile and at $300 each plus fitting you wont want to have to replace any

well it was done .. tires are scrubbed I think

was pleased to see a bit of fog this morning as it indicated a top day was on the horizion ..

dogs text to say he was coming to shannon .. esp as I was a wee bit nervous of riding out on brand spanking new tires .. cheers for that mate it was really appreciated

first order of business to gas up then off to the wrecker to pick up new side cover :2thumbsup discussed the dip stick & plug that allowed gear oil to be flung out .. well pete just happened to have one of them as well .. oh yeah need one of those things (screw - things) there .. dunno wots that called .. do you have one of them as well ?? sorted as well .. sweetttttt

then off hmm am sure I mentioned to Barry we needed to go to palmerston .. but like a bloke he missed that part of the convo & off through Rongotea towards feilding we headed .. ohh well I did post where we were meeting ..

hmm this was the only rain we hit & with the new tires & new handlebars to get used to was a  but only one :shit: moment on a bridge that had a wicked left hand bend had a bit of a wobble moment but all good .. :sweatdrop:

hmm garage at feilding thought should top up with gas .. oh fark bugger ... no issues when undoing at shannon but now key was not engaging tumbler & no way that cap was coming off .. after a few trys & taking to bike shop for a try it was off to dogs place to deal to it .. a wee stop at Barry's new local watering hole .. great couple in there

At Barry's it was sort out the levers as with the move to new handlebars they were not comfy for me so a wee adjustment .. then it was off to make the coffee's while mark & Barry sorted out the cap issue .. needless to say by time coffee was made it was off

after a nice break in the quiet of dogs haven it was back off towards Ashhurst still a wee bit of pea gravel about only had one wee skid coming round a corner  that was not a nice feeling on new tires :nono: so definately backed way off the pace for the remainder of the corners, refill at Ashhurst & time to text a few ppl  then Garry H turned up .. dogs headed back for home & Garry, Mark & I headed for shannon for a late lunch and chat at the Cafe .. before Mark & Garry headed back up the line again

blardy great seeing so many bikes out and about .. and fantastic perfect riding weather after feilding

Dogs thanks so much for your support & coming to shannon to ride with me -and for showing English & I your back yard - your a blardy great mate

English its good to catch up as always great to have someone also scrubbing in new tires

Garry great to see ya out & about .. thanks for the escort to shannon & catch up

It's the front that's the worry. Looking at it compared to my mates brand new Metzler the tread isn't that deep. Only 1,900km on it. Maybe it's just the tyre type? Maybe I'm paranoid - do not want to be forced out of the GC, have seen it happen to some guys. Rear is sweet as - you get to use it right out to the edge too. :2thumbsup How are yours going?

Yep, got the Alpinestars. XXL but still a bit tight across palms, think I've stretched them/broken them in a bit today. Not sure about those Pilot Powers - the only hole they're supposed to have is where the rim goes...

Hi all, I've been a bit quiet here lately due to lot's of stuff going on, good and bad. But got the Triumph out yesterday, took Sarah and retraced the Fordell loop. Magic ride. Visited THE corner. Yep, that's a nasty one alright and it nearly caught me out too. Still gravelled, and it's definitly an interesting one with a very powerful optical illusion accompanying it. Whilst stopped got into a chat with the local cocky who says there's been two bike incidents in the last three weeks. Not surprised.

Anyway, continued on, it's a great loop and we ended up in Ashhurst at the cafe. Caught up with Meanie and Brandon, good to see you guys  Tooted past Cowboyz but needed to get to town so didn't stop. Next time though.

Nice to feel the end of winter. Actually got a bit hot - yay.

Ship docks tonight and bike will be out of customs early next week :soon:

I rang test centre who are happy for bike to be dropped with them as soon as it is released and as long as I take passport with me when collecting it (mental note to not send in residency forms yet)

Bike can then be collected saturday 29th before 2pm.

Whilst 86 had offered to take me up :sunny: It is a shame if he needs to get the Friday off work as I know he really wants to go on ride:ride: this weekend and Manfield and will need to swap to get that off too.

Either I shall get Overlander up Friday night and stay in Auckland then come back down saturday, or go with the origional plan of 86 taking me up friday or saturday and us coming back down the following day.Decision by the weekend:yes:

Looking forward to riding tonight, especially as it is such a great day:sunny:

Caught up with Yod at Phil Turnbull's this morning, he was just picking his bike up after getting the new tyres on the RF so he should be good to go this afternoon. Enjoy your blast on a Hornet:niceone:

Shit mate....I doubt it some how, i'm all over the place like a fart in a bottle at the moment. Got a 850-900k ride over through the Naki tomorrow, but there are other plans afoot, maybe gonna duck off half way through that ride and shoot over to Gizzy yet! Make a two day ride of it. It's all up in the air at the moment though.....

When and for how long ya be in Gizzy.......are ya coming back this way or what?????? Cheers W

Might have to skip it. There's a slim possibility that I may make it tomorrow though. Would only be going as far as Hawera and then turning off up to Inglewood. Still playing it by ear though.

Great night for a blat!

Where's everyone? Don't tell me you all got abducted by aliens in backwoods Taranaki, for them to figure what these motor thingies are that we keep banging on about...

The last five pages everyone's talking about this amazing ride coming up yesterday, but Sun night - silence...

Yup copied across - cause i can :D

well simply awesome ride today

after promising 86 choccy cake if he got his ass outta bed this morning to join english & I at manfeild .. & a few hours later (not organised that boy :bleh:) Sarah & Al finally made an appearance. Watched some great racing & caught up with a few of the kbers before we decided a quick flick on my new playground would be a great way to end the day :niceone:.. as we gassed up the hawkes Bay crowd also came through so decided to hook up to Ashhurst .. Mstrs & Tart decided to head off ahead .. so with myself in the lead (just for a change ) robertydog, gixxer 4eva, wasp27 & donna, 86 2 up with sarah, english .. hmm & I think I am missing someone else .. off we stormed .. caught up with Mstrs & just tucked in behind him .. at Ashhurst lots of toots & waves as we seperated ..

86 with english hot on his heels disappeared into the distance over the saddle .. well perfect time to practice some of sugi's lesson .. so slowed down & decided to play :scooter:

hooked up again on the main road .. quick stop for refreshments & off through Ballance & the track .. OMG Betsy in the lead again :gob:.. now getting ones Mojo back after a bin or ... well damn sugi has hmm taught me well used the whole road & glad there were no boy racers on the wrong side of the road today:angry2:.. & it felt blardy fantastic :D.. English & 86 can give their perspective but from my grin .. well that said it all .. took it fairly easy on the eastern side of the track but coming down the western side .. well lets just say thats the fastest i have ever cornered or gone & it felt just damn awesome ...

after saying our goodbyes even had a spirited ride back to shannon ..fed the horses & shot off to Levin for dinner ..

just need to practice some more twistie stuff .. but figure with daylight savings starting the block will get a bit more practice .. then there is dogs playground with grit on corners .. that will be the next practice ground ..

What about the Para Para's for a nice 50k wind up? then back again for some fun? did it on the way to Cold Kiwi this year and it was great, would be more fun without all the stuff on the bike too

Saw you guys at the racing today but was unable to get out of the stables to say hi, one to many "hiccups" from the guys I was with, every time i was going to come over something else went wrong, nice to be needed though

Ta Meanie, yeah I'm a bit of a KB flirter I'm afraid, just poke my head in, say a few nice things then I'm off again.

I will keep an eye on the Gissy thread though, cheers for the heads up. I employ Yod as my full time KB (and trademe) informant, but I might have to give him a paycut!

Yep, I'm taking Sarah up to the big AK on Friday morning. Stopping in Turangi on the way to see if I can find some stuff that I'll need for the big trips and stopping there on the way back to pick up those things when I'm one up again.

Not so organised as to actually give a departure time yet but it won't be too late. Gotta leave time for a couple of latte stops eh lol

If anyone wants to come along for some or all of the way then feel free to sign up. But being Friday I'm not expecting too much. Just hope the weather holds!

If you could guarentee no cops and traffic then it would be all on. There is some fairly tight stuff in the middle there so the sweepers would have to be pushing it. Worth a crack you reckon?
