I've been thinking for the last week or two that it would be a good idea to have a thread devoted to rides in the Manawatu (and beyond). Seeing as there's such a good crew here and we manage to get out on some great rides on such a regular basis, it would be a good place to post up ride ideas, reports and pics.

That way no-one would miss out and everybody should feel free to post up if you feel like a ride :done:

Edit: 11/1/09

After a few evolutions and the need for a general 'discussion' thread, let's use this one as a non ride forum.

Had a great ride today in good weather: Palmy-Danniverke-Wimbledon-Waipuk-Waipawa, up middle road to Napier and then back Highway 50. Roads a bit dodgy from Weber to Wimbledon. Middle road a blast - don't have to tell you guys that. No cops, no rain!

This spring/summer I would be keen to see a monthly ride with the Manawatu group. Eg meet Carterton for crew heading north and then onto the Manawatu ride meeting venue. Similarly every other intervening fortnight, Manawatu could meet up down say Masterton/Carterton for ride to Martinborough or back over the Rimutaka Hill and loop back.

Just putting it out there for some feedback.

Heads Up and Enjoy:yes::scooter::yes::scooter::yes::scooter:

I think we may be onto something let's see how things pan out leading into daylight saving.

One ride I have in mind is a dawn to dusk, with morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, [heck that sounds so old fashioned, but you all know what I mean] then say final eating evening meal. Somewhere between 400-600km ride - over the hill and up Manawatu and beyond [and/or] loop ciruit.

ok today's ride .. leaving shannon approx 10am - ish (depending if we can find faults with both Tina's & my bikes  )

since they did the track coming to my place would like to flick over the saddle - therefore leaving my place, garage to gas up, Ashhurst, (met by the blue cafe if you want to come out riding):scooter:

over to woodville, Pahiatua, back roads to Alfredston, masterton, at this point I will gas up & head back up the line may go via mangamarie track home & the aucks are thinking of heading out to castlepoint for a look see if you feel like riding further ... :sunny:

its not a planned ride as such so pretty much anything goes (may stop at windmills for a look see up close) etc .. but stops will not be for long :nono:

I will be checking back here til we are about to leave for any updates :innocent:..

cheers

I have'nt given up on the idea of a ride somewhere today but i'm gonna sit tight and see what happens with the weather over the next couple of hours and i'll check in here to get a feel for whats going on around the place weather and riding wise. It's looking unfriendly here at the moment but it's not raining as such. Things may improve over the next couple of hour maybe (fringers crossed).

Thinking about doing a quick loop around Highway 54 (Fielding-Kimbolton-Rangiwahia-Mangaweka) and then back over Vinegar Hill this arvo. Probably leave Palmy around 1pm and want to be back about 3 or so. If anyone's interested could maybe meet up in Fielding. Gonna log off now but will check back 12ish.

I am very keen for a FULL days riding. As soon as the weather picks up will be all in for planning out some longer routes.

Napier- taupo route is certainly high on the list as is east cape. Then there is awakino - 8 mile.. ohh the choices........

Yep. Good ride back. Had hot choc at ashhusrt and then found out they were going up the saddle so had to go for a blast up to see if the windmills were still there and have a discussion about Yods shaft. Turned back through the gorge just before woodville. Weather is on and off now so hope you guys get home in the dry. Waiting for our vistors to show up.

The videos are up on the "other" website for those with secret logg ins and somehow they went from 12 meg to 635meg on the disc from when chanceyy gave them to me in ashhurst to me getting home. Seriously serious compression going on there but shouldnt be too bad.

good ride as always;

poor old sarge got to pahiatua to meet us and discovered his rear had some lovely canvas patches showing through :shit: so he had to head home before he even got started:weep: gutted for ya mate, see you next time tho
nice to meet bryce on the TL

found some pace through from pahiatua, got a good groove on with the stranger, bryce, stirts and chanceyy following....after alfredton the stranger decided to give the fz1 a workout since he was 1-up - the mrs and I couldnt catch him on the rf and we weren't being shy :shit: nice lines mate :niceone: my rear tyre got a serious chewing today being 2-up and not being shy with the right hand....almost time for replacements

bit of a boring toddle back up the main road from carterton, found a bit of rain, then went back through mangamaire in the wet and over the track in the dry.....more and more impressed with the pilot roads as i get more confident on the bike....

total kms: about 260
max speed:
best bit: still the pahiatua-alfredton-rte 52 section....often licked, never beaten
best comment: stopped at the top of the saddle where cowboyz (who was supposed to be going home) says "...well no-one told me you were coming over my racetrack....."

yup it was another fab day out riding ..

well Betsy is blowing fuses so guess its gonna be a bit of exploratory surgery soon as it appears there may be a short somewhere .. may be a good time to degrease her bits again ..

stirts bike started no probs after the battery charged so once meanie & cowboyz finished their coffee & choccy cake it was off to catch up with yod .. great flick to Ashhurst .. am really really begining to enjoy this road & the corners

after a latte stop & thinking we were saying bye bye to cowboyz & meanie, I must admit I cracked up  when I seen cowboyz zip past .. knew he would not be able to resist the saddle

after doing the windmill sightseeing off to pahiatua & met sarge .. :shit: on the tire .. (pics to follow)

Bryce nice to met ya, hope calving goes smoothly so we can see ya out on some more rides :D

love that magic road just before masterton .. Betsy just begs to let rip .. & who am I to deny her :innocent::shutup:

off to wild oats cafe .. just managed to catch Buck Buck #1 as the welly crew were heading out so a quick chat before the usual high standard food

since time was becoming a premium decided direct route would be best & managed to hit all 4 seasons within a hour

but a most excellent day riding .. & pics do not look quite as bright without a gold one .. but we managed :killingme

We're Back! Bloody brilliant. My post has vanished (as has everyone elses from the early hours of Monday), so to put it back on the agenda:
I am heading down to Welly on Saturday morning and are keen to take some back tracks on my way down, it'd be great if anyone would like to join me.

Planned route is over the track to Pahiatua, then either out to Alfreton, or the longer route out to Pongaroa (depending on group mood), then down 52 to Masterton, fill up, people who are still with me then out over the Gladstone Hill climb road (definately worth while if you haven't done it before), then down to Featherston, over the 'takas, and I'll continue on to Welly but anyone else can peel of and head over the Haywards and Paekok hill and head back up to Palmy.

I did originally say 8am start but I think a few people complained, in which case how about extending the time to 8.30 :-)? I don't want to be getting away late or I'll only be in welly for a few hours before coming home!

At this stage ill be joining you but ill let you know for definite tomorrow night
About what time did you want to be in Welly

Yeah i'm in too, just depends if I drag my ass outta bed in time, i'll see what gets posted tonight. Can anyone let me know what the weather in Palmy is doing at the moment? I'm coming over to get the new tyres fitted and I would like to know should I wear my cordura jacket or can I wear leather?

Yeah, I'm in. Should be a damn good ride! It will be good to get some time up on the new tyres too. Funnily enough, I've had 3 small slides with them. The first was in the wet - understandable, but the other two have been on seemingly dry roads. I've been thinking about this and either these tyres need a lot of scrubbing in, or I've noticed there's a lot of pollen around right now which may be causing a slippery road surface? Hmmm.

Yeah, it was a bit weird. They were only very small slides, but definitely noticeable and they recovered instantly. I know Michelin had a big recall of French made 2CT's but I thought that had been sorted. It will be interesting to see how they go today.

Where to start? At the beginning I guess.

Jumped on bike and headed out with Meanie to the bottom of the piahatua track to meet up with the others. We were unfashionably early so had a bit of a wait before Yod bowls up on the worlds dirty-est RF900. Rodger Dodger and 86 werent far behind and we were off over the track.

A Commodore followed RD 86 and I onto the track and I didnt think much of it until half way through the track I noticed he was still right behind us. Not close enough to cause concern but seemed to be enjoying following some sportsbikes over the track. RD stopped for some reason so pulled over to see what was up and the commodore went by. Headed away and soon caught up with the commodore and the fun began. Have to give it to the guy he could certainly drive that big V8. Challenge laid down and there were 3 who were all ready to accept. Absoultely stunning ride to Piahatua. As we got to the city limits everyone slowed to 50 and a small boy was in the front seat grinning from ear to ear. The driver gave us a wave and we went seperate ways. Damn fine way to start the day and no one lost face with the V8 Vs IL4 Vs triple Vs twin GP.

Meet up with NZSarge and headed off to Alfrerton. Good run with niceist weather we have had in a long time and nice dry roads.

Down to Masterton for some fuel and then headed back out castlepoint road and the back roads through gladstone to martinbourgh for some lunch. Had a damn nice burger before heading to featherston Via Lake ferry.

Some dipshit backed into Rodger Dodgers bike at the garage and although the damage was minimal this tosser was all in for not taking responibility for it saying tosser-like things like "Its only a scratch, it doesnt matter"
Big ups to RD for the way he handled it. Situation reversed and Mr T Osser backing into my bike I am pretty sure it would have ended with either police or amulance being called, probably both.

Got over that and had a pretty frustrating trip up the rimutakas with wind picking up and cars galore all over the place.

headed down to Lower Hutt and waved goodbye to RD as he was off to wellington and headed for the highlight of the trip.

With 86 hot on my tail I found some rhythm over piecock and as much as I tried the golden boy was not going to let me go. Would have been fanstastic to have a camera onboard for that stretch but we will have to surfice with memory and that way at least we can embelish a little.

Time moving on past 3pm and I am overdue for home so left the crew and had a bit of a flying trip home to make ashhurst at 4.07pm.

Weather looked a bit dodgey on this side of the island but I got home without getting wet which is always a good thing.

Thanks to all attending, great to get out on a really good run. See if I can find a few photos.

I alomost forgot too........ After the magic run over piecock I forgot that Al lent me the gold machine for a bit. Damn nice bike there Al. Although I was thinking it was lacking in power when I was "accelerating nicely" and only doing 90. The bike sits really really high compared to the zx9r and the "feel" for the speeds the bike is doing is really unassuming. Plus the speedo is mph the numbers dont crunch.

Really really easy to ride though and falls into the corners nicely.

If I ever get over my childish phase of jap sportsbikes it certainly would be high on the list. I was happy to get back on the aggressive 9 though.

very impressed with those roads around the gladstone/martonborough area and the weather over there was mint :niceone: of course, the weather on the west side was crap but hey, it wouldnt have been one of our normal adventures if we didnt get wet somewhere....

had a moment coming into Otaki....i had a seriously sore arse so after i hit the 70km zone i stood way up on the bike just to stretch out a bit but as i sat down i realised i was practically on top of a plod car :shit: check the mirror as i pass him, sure enough, he lights up like a xmas tree :crybaby: couldnt believe it!! he looked liek he was about to pull a u-turn but once i got round the next bend i never saw him again....a BIG sigh of relief!

all in all another great day, cheers guys

that will be my last ride for the next few weekends, in-laws here tomorrow and then ill be away for a couple of weekends but will be keen as when i get back

Quite possibly. I know the tee offs 1030-11ish and route Fordell etc but where is the form up point/s?

You know I'm a bit slow. But riding Hondas has that effect you know.....................
hmmmm. Its just a stage your going through. You will grow out of it soon and see the light and buy a kwaka.

 what a ride...how many km's cowboyz? must been 450ish?
nice guess. My gps read exactly 450km when I got home.
18% track memory used and 5% total memory used. SHould be good for longer trips.

sorry 'bout the state of the RF, promise ill clean it next time
Now that is better. There will be an inpection next time.

You might want to look at some new hoops for that bike there. New tyres are cheaper tahn new fairings.

Great ride guys Awesome weather over the Wiarapa it was like a summers day when we stopped in Martinborough
Had trouble finding my lines today through most of the ride, not too sure why just one of those days i guess, i did have a mild headache all day so ill blame that Mind you the pace was certainly not for the faint hearted or beginner which is what i felt like chasing these guys round the back roads behind Masterton. I had a moment coming into a corner in too higher gear and too fast (I love the ABS braking on the concours.) i gotta remember to change down a few gears coming into them tight corners, after riding the mean streak it didnt matter what gear your in, you just braked or opened her up in any gear
Found my lines again at Paekok hill, I love that road

Thanks guys for a great day and once again good company :2thumbsup

Yep, this one definitely ranks right up there with the best. It was an excellent ride over some simply amazing roads. Loved the guy in the Holden and the road to Alfredton is always good. Although I came the closest I've come for a long time to going over a bank today. Was following RD down a twisty bit when I got blinded by a cloud of dust right at the same time as my visor fogged up. It took me by surprise and the next thing I know I'm heading off the corner towards a very long drop! Managed to save it though, but it gave me a fright. Same feeling as you got as a kid when you realise that a crash is inevitable :gob: :sweatdrop.

The rest of the ride was perfect especially all the back roads through to Martinborough. Managed to scrape the exhaust (again) quite by accident when the road dropped away goddamnit!

Great fun riding the 9, that baby has some get up and go alright and Cowboyz made the Trumpy look pretty good from behind

Great lunch at Martinborough, could have sworn it was summer. Through to Featherston for gas and apart from the tool at the servo the rest of the ride was brilliant.

Taka's excellent as always and the highlight for me was the Piecoc Hill as Cowboyz set a mean pace. Really wished we'd had a bike cam for that leg - farking brilliant mate :niceone:

Sedate ride home and apart from the cop at Otaki a great wind down.

Thanks guys, another excellent day

always good having another kwaka on the ride. You never seem that far behind and always entertaining at the stops (which there seems to be plenty of. You did see the stats off the GPS for riding time/ stopped time huh?
Always pays to take some time getting used to a new bike. More riding should sort that out. The ride over piecock hill today was quite alot different to the first ride across it when I brought the 9 and you followed me on the meanstreak.

Agreed about the fantastic ride. Didnt hear about the almost off but at least it was an almost. If you get sick of that Daytona you could park it up at my place instead of throwing it down the road.

do you want to go through and explain what each of the lines above means? I never did get it?

OK - quick rundown

SANSON ARFOR (SA): - Sanson Area Forecast.

ARFOR SA VALID 1700 TO 0200 UTC - Area Forecast Sanson valid 0500 (5am) to 1400 (2pm).

1000 28020 - Wind at 1000 feet amsl. 280 degrees true at 20 knots.

3000 28025 - Wind at 3000 feet amsl. 280 degs true at 25 knots.

5000 27030 ZERO - Wind at 5000 ft amsl. 270 degs true at 30 kts. Temperature zero degs celcius.

7000 27025 MS03 - Wind at 7000 ft amsl. 270 degs true at 25 kts. Temp minus 3 degs C.

10000 27020 MS05 Wind at 10000 ft amsl. 270 degs true at 20 kts. Temp minus 5 C.

FZL 5000FT. - Freezing level (0 degs C) is 5000 feet amsl = ice in cloud. Not that we should be in cloud, but if we were and we were at or above 5000 ft then the bikes would ice up :gob:

VIS 40KM, 7000M IN -SHRA. - Visibility is generally 40 kms, reducing to 7000 metres in light showers of rain.

CLD FEW AREAS BKN CUSC 2500 TOPS 7500. - Cloud. A few (small) areas of broken (lots) of cumulus and strato cumulus (low level lumpy and smooth cloud) with a base of 2500 feet amsl and tops of 7500 feet amsl.

WX FEW -SHRA THIS MORNING. = Weather. A few (a little bit) of light showers of rain this morning.

Hopefully that means that there wont be any this afternoon, but we'll have to wait for the next area forecast to find out.

Nah mate...thats still jibberish to me:laugh: Anyway, hopefully by the time I get there the rain will have disappeared;) I'm wondering if there is time to throw a sponge and some soapy water at the bike before I have a shower....oh and I still gotta find your place:scratch:

Was only allowed out for a short ride today, Vinegar Hill and return.

Judging by the speed the Daytona and Concours passed me, one presumes you lot are not aware of the posted speed limits.

Was a great afternoon for a ride, hope you enjoyed yours. (would have stopped and said hello at Stormy Point but you looked like you were ready to take off again ).

well  it was a great day had awesome fun following Bonez out from feilding & a good steady pace on .. finally passed him on that sweeper out by marton turn off. that was awesome just in that groove :Punk: .. & thanks Bonez for letting me follow you .....

but out the back of Fordell came round a very tight left hand bend .. grit everywhere & Bonez & his bike having a discussion with a fence... :gob:
well umm yes a wee bit of speed was not going to lean the bike over or I would take the same line .. but hit the gravel & lost it .. just about saved it .. but no such thing as just about .. anyhow Chanceyy has had her first bin .. shouder took most of the impact but ended up pinned under the bike .. Although had enough fortitude to lean over & hit the kill switch .. but hey we did it in style & it was a 2 for 1 deal at least we both binned in the same place

thank you Bonez for lifting the bike off me .. & NZ sarge for the sugar hit .. & making sure I was ok .. also the pain relief later on.. Thanks Garry & Al for the support ..

Damage to Besty .. well pics pretty much tell it all .. but handlebar also twisted .. along with my shoulder giving me grief rode back one handed mostly .. hmm I actually felt better riding one handed than two at times ..

& the fence is Bonez work ..

Well it was a good ride today dispite some oop's. I wont go into too much detail, but needless to say the CX is sturdy enough to take out a concrete strainer post and then carry on with the ride after a little coaxing. Over the handle bars I went, with a soft landing in the mushy paddock. Now that was a first. Quite interesing how time all of a sudden slowed right down. Can remember thinking "I hope this wont hirt!!" as I flipped still airbourne looking at the sky. Had to toss out my Duck leggings when I got home, which I've had since '81. They've been torn to shreads by the barb wire. Luckily I've got a birthday coming up in a few months ah?

Saw heaps of bikes out too which was good to see. Hope the others got home ok.

Could have a been lot worse. The CX needs to go to the exhaust docter. There's quite a defined post impression in the rh header. I'll just use mildsteel tubing as the existing setup has obviously lasted a few decades. A bit of heat will sort out the brake lever (if someone has one laying about I may be interested btw) and the rh foot peg. "Good ol cold hard steel you know Mr Mainwaring!!" Impact seperated the rear rh indicator bulb which I found rattleing around while carrying out repairs at home. Good thing I've collected a few tidbits over the years. Used steel pipe straighten Rh front stem.
Oh the rh side cover is badly cracked so if anyone has a spare rh and lh they want to sell as well sing out.

Luckily I've a spare bike or 3 ah?

guys I am putting today down to MY inexperience ... I got a suprise to see bonez down & lost concentration .. along with grit & the corner dropping off without being signposted .. quite frankly it was not about speed .. I'll have to admit I hit the corner too quick. About 20 kms more than I should've I guess and difted right. Locking up the rear brake going sideways is not good. Got it staight again but far to close to the fence by then. Wasn't expecting the bike to stop as quick as it did obviously.

You did well to keep the bike up as far as you did, hitting the kill switch was good thinking when you were down so to speak. I was thinking "shit heat+petrol+synthetic gear wasn't a good combo " and the fact you appeared pinned down.

Lesson learnt ah, ready for the next run?

Yes, the day was an odd one alright. It had started out well enough with a good crew and a nice relaxed pace. It was a shock to see both Bonez and Chanceyy down, and not an experience we want a repeat of.

The bins occurred on a totally unfamiliar piece of road. A bloody good road, but again, that cursed pea gravel all over it!

An even larger bit of pipe and large cresent, was brought into play today to straighten, or was that unstaighten, the brake lever. Commuted to/from work today no worries at all.

Good to see you both are relatively unscathed ( fancy term for okay)

Pea gravel has been my downfall also in the past and still scares the hell out of me.

As for speed, i think the important thing is to ride at your own comfort level, age has taught me (most of the time ), to ride at the speed i want to and not at rates in excess of my ability.

The Blackbird is capable of extreme speeds, but I enjoy myself more at more legal speeds, as long as there are plenty of corners.( Shit, just realised I may have bought the wrong bike).

Yeah I reckon. Combine that with some of the ride we did up that way 2 or 3 weeks ago.

Seeing as summer is just around the corner I thought I would get a pack rack. Well three actually, a large rack, a 'sports' rack, and a handhold. I ordered it on Tuesday and it arrived first thing this morning. I picked it up at lunchtime and luckily the weather meant I was able to sneak away early to install it.

Apparantly it was supposed to take 30 - 60 mins to install. Yeah right lol. :bash:

The Daytona is a very fiddly bike to get at, especially the rear section, and the instructions omitted one very important point, but in the end it's on and looking good. Not as nice as the 'unracked' bike but it will certainly come in handy. I may need to get a pack now :sunny:

Awesome. I got the same racks. Especially the handhold as the poor old passenger needs something to hold of to. Makes it easy for those long weekends.
