ow one problem with this bike is that no manual came with the bike so I have to find what everything does. Is it normal to sometimes hear a popping sound when using the throttle? I adsume its related to the carbs?
cowboyz
5th July 2009, 21:13
thats nothing to worry about. Its the normal honda sound of the engine bolts hitting the ground. It is the plastic they are made of that makes them sound like that.
Elysium

Well new bike for me so just need to know what noises are normal and what to expect. Also my first bike with carbs.

ok. just cause its you I will put the honda pisstaking on hold for 5 mins. Is the popping on acceleration or on closing the throttle?
Well it sounds like a small popping/backfire sound. But it didn't happen very often and lasted only a second. I mean it sorter splutters when it's starting to warm up and the engine sound becomes smoother when the temp goes up. It happened a couple of times when I changed from second to first and blip the throttle while using clutch.
I should get the bike checked out by a bike shop anyway so they can have a good look over the bike so there aint no hidden surprises. Just might wait till I have the money and time.
cowboyz
5th July 2009, 22:04
sounds like a bit of a service wouldnt go amiss. air leak or balance carbs? Sounds like one of those problems that have to gothrough the basics and double check everything.
Elysium
5th July 2009, 22:07
Yeah bike has roughly 20,000 on the clock so no surprise if niggly things like this crop up. One thing I should check when I get money is have the CCTs looked at. They usauly get replaced at that amount of KMs I think.
KiwiKat
5th July 2009, 22:15
Um just a thought, maybe condensation in the tank / fuel line. It will evaporate when engine is hot and be more noticeable when throttle is blipped. 20000km isn't much on a modern bike.
ow one problem with this bike is that no manual came with the bike so I have to find what everything does. Is it normal to sometimes hear a popping sound when using the throttle? I adsume its related to the carbs?

You lucky bugger, im very jealous. I've been wanting to get a vtr for a while now, just cant afford to upgrade.
Its not the bike on overrun is it? bit of petrol getting in the pipes?

Baffles out I'd say on the overrun you may get it as the bike had the baffles in when you got it so is probably not setup for no baffles. A little crackle on overrun is enjoyable! Shouldn't be popping & farting on the gas...
At very low revs (say pootling up to a red light) changing down from 2nd to first mine will sometimes give a little back fire too and very occasionally stall. I think it's a big twin thing - takes a bit of momentum to keep the big slugs going up & down.
Re Cam-chain tensioner: a weak spot on most Hondas but unless it's been absolutely thrashed your should be ok at 20k.
I have a workshop manual on PDF somewhere...

I let mine warm up on choke until the temp gauge starts reading (35 degrees on mine) and then just head off quietly (3,000 revs tops) up the road until she's warmed up properly. Apparently as they get older the chokes work their way off while they're sitting there rather than staying out. Mine's ok but my mate's one does this.

That new controller is pretty cool and "clicks" on/off, so no need to hold buttons down.
I'm not totally sold on the knurling grips, but I guess I'll get use to them. Fitting the throttle grip was a bloody mission and required a stanley knife, file, P80-P180 sandpaper, lots of sanding and hair spray. The supplied glue was useless on that side and set before the grip was on two inches.:angry2:

An apprentice I helped along has set up in business and going along ok,there was another guy and he failed, need niche type market.
Was offered a job in the companies Otara branch years ago as 2nd in charge, chief of cutting floor, but job description stated stopping fights between Samoan and Fijian ladies and guys(some were machinists)using scissors, thought thanks for trip up here but no thanks.

She hasn't stopped smiling since last night. It really is a nice bit of kit and sooooo soft.
Sam also fixed my old leather jacket (for free), so it's looking for a good home. I'd prefer it to go to a poor struggling local KBer that needs some gear. Better to get some use than sitting here doing nothing!
Tracy also has an old jacket that needs a home. Bloody nice jacket actually with sheepskin liner, but a tad small and suitable for size 10-12 apparently.:shit: Looking at it, I'd have thought it would fit a 6 year old.
Neither jacket has armour!

Nice to talk bikes to you Al but if ya wanna be a rat ya gotta get rid of those jap things change ya name to 955 or 1050and also get a triumph beanie and a goatee:devil2:and the flock will follow
It was a great thing the rats and the raids were brilliant and still are!
But alas i have progressed to Harley as i got over all the ring dinging motors and pastel colours of leathers and helmets and that was just the triumphs!!haha
Seriously they are a good bunch and jesus do they play up
It was a good catch up and I had such a good time on my first Gixxer I think I'll hang on to the one's in the garage as a reminder. Won't be long til one's on the track either
Shame the Palmy RAT's have dwindled (maybe they need a secretary ) , but alive and well elsewhere eh! Yeah, Triumph are winning international style awards these days, quite cool in a modern way

Second bike in 1982 it was an XR200 1980 model, was used as farm bike mostly by owners son, then the cockie got pissed off with his son so traded it for a CT110.
Only useless thing was lighting kit, eventually shat itself,so they rigged up a battery system in the bag behind the seat.
Then swapped it for an IT175,power band was fun.

The IT175 supposedly had power to weight ratio which was the best in the class at the time.A guy I knew used to be in top 10 motox in NZsponsored by Hawera motorcycles way back in 1980's,his weapon of choice was YZ 125 and 250 for a while, then he went to the 465cc,only he shoehorned it into a IT 250 frame later on,was road legal and he had fun dragging other mates road bikes,he took it down the quarter mile drags, not to fast as he spent 300mts on rear wheel to show off.
