wow sounds like you were lucky then (least you weren't seriously hurt ) but its a shame that it happened only days after you brought it . was it the rider or bike that cause the mishap

good excuse to buy some after market bling for it eh ,these days the genuine parts cost more

Hey sarge, was askin bout ya bike at phil turnbulls (was in there looking at ma future gsxr ) and heard it might be done in like 1 weeks :2thumbsup ,how is it all going ?

Just got the claim form faxed away about 2 hours ago, hmmm I got serious doubts as to wether it would be done in a week! Once they get the go ahead and they have all the parts I cant see it taking anymore than a day to actually fix it coz it's only cosmetic damage really apart from the radiator. Sugilite was round here the other day and were discussing it and he reckons it will go close to being written off. I would'nt be overly surprised if it were.
Tally it up radiator maybe $2000, headlight $400, fairing $2000, footpeg assembly $200, engine sidecover $200, rear footpeg hanger $100, handlebars and handlebar posts $250, brackets $150 plus labour maybe 8x $75.
That's $5900 as a very rough guess could well be much more than that...
Who knows, time will tell, if thay had all the parts in NZ which I also seriously doubt once it got approved to be fixed then yeah, a week from that point should'nt be that far out but if bits need to come from Japan the automatically puts another 2 weeks on to it:rolleyes:
I am working on the assumption that half way mark of the value of the bike would be the write off point.

jesus :pinch: yea thats very expensive ,well by the looks of it im guessing write off would be a better option wouldn't it ? as you might not get that bike back for many months to come if ya have to wait for all those parts from far and away places <_<

Hi everyone. We've survived the African mainland and are now on the island of Zanzibar in a very relaxed hotel on the beach. This is good and the perfect way to wind down from the last week.

Africa is amazing! We've spent the last week cruising in a big Mercedes safari truck from Nairobi in Kenya, through the Rift Valley, into Tanzania and the Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge and the Ngrongorongo crater. The animals are truly incredible, all living side by side in relative peace. It's an amazing natural ecosystem and the animals have it worked out very well. The only thing that fucks it is us of course. But it's great to see the effort going into conservation here and the locals are real determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Most nights have been spent camping in the bush. It's a humbling experience to know that you're surrounded by nearly every predator on earth and to lie awake and know that there are hyenas just inches from your tent. Luckily they're basically cowards and you'd have to be very unlucky to run foul of them. The lions are a different story though, and I'm just bloody thankful that no buffalo's decided to get into the tent. These things are the most dangerous animals around, they will spend hours making sure you are dead, and they bear a grudge.

According to the guides we've been incredibly lucky to have seen as much of the animals as we have. Lions (mating season - my god those boys have to work lol), hippos, giraffe, elephants (in the camp!), two leopards, what an incredible animal, cheetta stalking (wow), vultures (the aeriel spotters), civet cats, tons of birds, flamingos, the rhino! crocs, zebra, wildebeast and more. We got a taste of the annual migration, incredible.

The roads are intense. Some are non existant, but yet there was one which was better than anything in NZ. The Japanese govt built it to get into the Ngorongorongo crater and it was bliss after being banged around for most of the days.

OSH would just collapse into a quivering heap if they had to deal with the conditions here, and the HP would just have give up trying to control the drivers. Strangely though, it all seems to work as long as you're alert.

The people are something else and their living conditions are hard to describe. Dirt streets, shacks, cattle, dogs, and children everywhere. They seem happy enough though, and take pride in their appearance. AIDS is huge and unemployment runs about 40 %, so they make sure they do a good job because there's always someone else who will. If they lose their jobs, they starve. Simple.

I'm in two minds whether it would be doable by bike. On the one hand yes, easily, on the other well, you've got to survive the drivers, the potholes, the animals and the heat. And the toilets, christ. And just check very carefully for whats behind that bush or under that tree when you stop for a fag and a pee :eek5:

OK, i'll get off the line and let these guys on the puter.

Happy New Year :woohoo::D

Sorry to hear about the off yesterday. Not good. I hope it isnt a recurring theme. Glad the injuries were relatively minor too. Shame I couldnt make the ride but ahwell.....

Had a good ride back from Napier today. For some reason I was actually quite enjoying all the traffic (i dont know why either). Passed about a million cars and trucks and several other bikes too (some harleys just cant go round corners can they ) and had a blinding run through the gorge. We've made it back to the UK and the cloud and cold. Nairobi was in the process of being burned down due to the riots over the elections, but we made it through the airport with no probs!

I've had the distinction of riding two Honda's in two different countries in two days. Sarah and I hired a couple of XLR 250's for a quick ride around Zanzibar, mine had knobblies but I still managed a decent pace. In 30 degrees, great fun, and I was a bit naughty and did it in shirt sleeves. The 'helmet' was a complete joke, looked like a kids Christmas gift!

Back in the UK and Sarah's brother very kindly lent us his CBR 1100 Blackbird. Had all the gear this time and gave her a good blast around the M and A roads. Bloody froze, but kept it upright!

Back to NZ soon, must say it will be nice to chill out after the amazing sights sounds and smells of Africa

Mind you, the corruption is pretty bad and I don't blame those guys for being pissed off with empty promises and vote rigging which is what it seems it was about!

Have a bloody good day at the track, hope they have another one planned?

didnt do the trackday, didnt want to embarass cowboyz, geez I'm a nice bloke, aye mate

had to head to Napier yesterday so had some fun on the way up but I finally did the infamous Napier-Taihape road today

- first 40km - firkin spectacular road....really really really good with a bit of everything and in top condition
- next 15km - gravel and a fair bit of traffic, arse
- next 8km - sealed, tight and steep, fairly skinny, no road markings and a bit of soft tar in the heat - yeehah
- next 20km - gravel but not much traffic anymore so a pleasant enough pootle but y'know, it was gravel and I was on a roadbike so arse really
- last 65km sealed thru to Taihape, bloody nice racetra....err....road

definitely glad I did it as the sealed sections really are awesome roads, but 40 odd kms of gravel in the middle is an arse. If it was only 10-15 then it would be worth doing again but its a pretty long haul on an RF!!

Met up with a nice couple on a CR and a DR so we kept each other company through a good portion of it

stopped in Taihape for a wild bean coffee and met a chap on a very tidy 1973 3 cyl 2-stroke Suzuki GT750. Wow. Bet I never see one of those again. Apparently the traffic plods had them back in the day. What a sound, pissed off I didnt think quickly enough to get a photo too, bugger.

was right in the groove by now so meandered down the main road and then fired thru vinegar hill at pace

Those were the days of the waterbus 380,500 and 750,not forgetting the re5 rotary, then the cops went to the yammy tx models, the racers never laughed so much,a good gt 380 ridden would piss bowl the cops, not me though.

Now don't give Cowboyz grief, that's not suzuki riders style,we may need to remove our feet out of mouth at sometime, lol, the times he was doing seemed damn good, can recall a local guy in the 6 hour back in 86-87l lapping about 1.35 ish on a honda 750,they completed the race and the bike was sold on the following tuesday, was sponsored by local dealer.

yeah i thought it was 20-25km for some reason which is long enough but when its round the 40km mark it does drag on a bit

I'll be first in the queue when they finally seal it though - the sealed sections are as good as any other road I've done and the metal sections will be too, once they're sealed - great contours and camber....

yep to both sides - its a farkin good road - when you first get off the metal on the taihape side you come off a plateau and you can see the road winding down your side of the valley and all the way up the other side - looks awesome - its a pretty decent surface too, has twisties and quicker open stuff as well, it really is well worth the ride

the napier side is a farkin mint surface but its a fair bit shorter

finally bled my clutch and whadya know - I gotta huge bottle of grey fluid out of it! fresh fluid has fixed it like new:niceone:
I just cant understand how it went so soft so quickly, one ride it felt ok, the next it went to the pack....

Hiya all:sunny:

86 enroute home so I get on the internet:2thumbsup:

Sure would love to get some k's under the rubber myself:ride:

The trip around Zanzibar was a laugh and not too hairy considering I had never been on a trials/enduro type bike before. I had the least knobbly tyres and still skidded on a corner when 86 went right for no apparent reason!!!!

The blackbird was a dream:niceone: and hope to take it for a quick spin myself later this week. Good that 86 was a windbreak on thursday, bloody chilly.

SK1PY at anza having a once over so hopefully will be running smoothly when I get back. 86 has the new clutch, a moments silence at the airport when they asked if he had been asked to carry anything for anybody:lol: we decided not to say anything. Then they asked if anybody could have put anything in his luggage, as we are still stood there he opens a pocket in his hand luggage and finds the card I slipped in there and blurts out, whats this!!!Luckily the check-in guy was too thick to notice.

I have a mad week of picking up the dog, visiting friends and family and then leave here on Friday for the USA and back home.

I know Ali has kept you up to date with all our exploits and we can combine the house warming with our holiday snaps, hopefully we will have edited them by then!!! Sounds like the Manawatu has been eventful in our absence:yes:

Wishing you all a great New Year and look forward to seeing you all for a ride:ride:

Hey guys. :Oi:

Anyone keen for a ride this weekend, with the good weather and all. I know Supertramp is keen. Was thinking of heading down Levin/Otaki way, having a coffee and lunch then returning through the back roads round Shannon. Thought this would be an easy ride for all of us who have just started out although the Manawatu crew sounds pretty supportive of us newbies.

Other suggestions will be accepted, I'm just wanting to get out on the highway while the getting good.

Gidday. I made it back into the country (nice lawns :2thumbsup) and have been resting up a little due to a combination of a nasty cold that I got on the plane from Nairobi, which wasn't helped by fanging around the English countryside in minus 2 on a Blackbird. Plus, I picked up a little bug on the last day on the African mainland that just seemed to make sure I didn't stray too far from the 'convieniences' :devil2:

But I'm just about right now and am looking forward to seeing if the Daytona still works  I'm sure she does and it will be nice to get back on her.

I'm in two minds about whether to head up to Turangi soon, as the boat has been left languishing for months and it NEEDS a run.

Here's a few pics, there's 1000's and we'll have to have a photo evening when Sarah gets back with the rest of them! Word of advice if anyone goes on safari in Africa - take a decent camera! My little Kodak just coundn't keep up, but you get the idea

Yes, looking forward to hearing some of these, doesn't sound like the Manawatu to be suffering 'loss of traction issues' - touch wood :pinch:

Well, after my best of intentions about getting the boat out, I realise that the Nissan has a WOF and Reg which is only about a month out of date, the boat battery may possibly be flat, it was windy, and I couldn't really be arsed driving all the way to possibly be fined AND not being able to start the boat. Battery's been on charge and I'll invest in a new jump start when funds available.

Masterton may be a go

After my little bought of insomnia yesterday I hit the starter button at 730 am. She fired up first time, this being the longest she's not been run. Down to the BP for the first decent pie in 3 weeks and some gas. Triumph's don't die, they just get faster :niceone:

problem is, ya say "follow me", and they think it means "keep up with me"

you could be right there jonno, also its a male thing .. must keep up with the boyz syndrome I admit when the pace is on its tempting to ride above your ability ... another reason I am hanging out the back with the newbies & having a turn at riding to about 90 % of my ability for a wee spin when i feel like it ..

this is another reason I try to make my rides cruisy, but cater to everyone .. & as cowboyz has said having the experienced guys at front & stopping at turns they get their fun speed factor getting to the front again .. the newbies do not quite feel the pressure of trying to keep up .. no matter how much you say ride your own ride the pressure is there ...

Yep all guys listen to mother superior,or is that a superior mother!:girlfight:

but yes i hope i can pick up were i left off and carry on riding with you all 2 ,as ive got alot of advice from everyone on the manawatu rides and in generall just enjoy the company of people who all like bikes

Pleased to see you have a good attitude from the outcome. as Chancey said we dont want to post a RIP post for anyone. We enjoy each others company here in the Manawatu and are all becoming good friends, part of that is looking out for each other which sometimes means a few reality checks, something we all need from time to time
Be good to see you back on the horse again :soon:

Have you guys seen the price they want for a 2nd hand 250 nowdays, bloody robbers
Thought we may as well buy a new one, shell keep it for about 12 months untill she gets her full and then get her a real one
Hoping to not loose too much coin on a new bike considering they are getting between $3000 and $4500 for something about 15 to 20 years old

You're not wrong - trying to get another mate into it too. They get better resale than harleys! Saw a GSX250 in phils for $5,500 with 20,000 k's on it - they were only $5,500 new!

Damn, another one, but if it's like the article says, the bike was going along Kelvin Grove and thats the road that is straight, Roberts Line comes onto it. I'm picking the git in the 4WD turned to go up Roberts Line right in front of the bike.
