yeah to be fair I haven't done a whole heap of winter riding lately. I did notice the other day though the lack of fairing on the bandit made me legs a bit cold on the ride home friday night. Put the quilted linings back in my pants now :) might also get some chillout pants and top. Geez what an old pussy I've turned into now I'm old :Pokey:

ok... went to Freedoms last night, talked to Craig and we came to rhe conclusion the VFR800 they had wasn't what we are looking for. Its too heavy vs power and handling so we'd end up disillusioned and probably not riding 2up at all, leaving her out of any future rides and thats not the plan.
However all was not lost... after laughing about street fighter-ing a CBR or R1 we ended up standing next to their 3 VTR1000 Firestorms.
Good looking 2up seat, low rear pegs, had to admit not a bad looking bike, comfortable riding position thats not TOOO far the touring way.
Anyone had any experience with one?

Are they going to match ANZA and open on Sundays? It's one of our favourite winter rides on a Sunday.
Hmmm not sure about the new thread title. I feel more dignity is required from the title since most crap talked in here is at an elevated level.

Sounds like the salesmans got to many VTRs and wants to move them. I'd take the VFR if given the choice and they where both good examples.
VTRs chew fuel and I doubt if they have more power to weight.
Yep, since the CBR's after mine ('00) have gone to low clipons and the RR format, my next bike will be a VFR800. I'll take the smoothness of a 4 over a v-twin any day ... and that linked brakes is nice

heaps of torque, but a four will be quicker overall, suck like a 2 dollar ho' (gas that is), if you're not kind to the throttle....Nobras manged to run out between putaruru and turangi - 150-160km out of a tank:shit: not big tanks tho
150-160km out of a tank:shit: not big tanks tho
What?? Is that the VTR or the VFR? any bike that only gave me that much out of the tank will be off the shopping list. The GSX-R is like that. 180-200 out of a tank, it's apalling. Mine hits reserve at 271 and runs out at 323
Edit: Figues from Bikez.com for 2008 VFR800 Fi show tank size as 21.95 litres and the 2006 VTR1000 tank size as 18 litres. What's with that??? A big litre bike with the same tank as my 600? I did the run with Kendog on his GSXR from Masterton, through Pongaroa, Weber and Porangahau to Waipuk which is exactly 200km and he was shitting himself over gas. That's just not fun at all.
Other interesting facts: The VTR is 15kg lighter but the seat height is 825mm vs the VFR at 803mm

Lots of fun to ride. Comfortable riding position. '01 and later models (I think) have a larger 19 liter tank. I get 300km touring and a consistent 6.7 per 100km during a mixed commute. I generally cruise in 4th or 5th. You might get slightly better mileage in 6th but 3500ish at 105kph feels a bit laboured. The VTR feels much nicer cruising 4500-5000.
When I'm out to enjoy myself mileage is irrelevant - I didn't buy the VTR to save at the pump.
I've found the VTR is light and responsive through the corners. I haven't ridden 2up.

I looked at the VTR. Too much I didnt like about it. Of the two I would have a VFR over a VTR any day of the week. They both have power and they both have weight. VFR looks a whole heap better. They are touring bikes so that has to be taken into consideration.

agreed. The VTRs I have seen also seem to want a shit load of money for them. It would surprise me if anyone was disappointed with the VFR for touring.

From the distance perspective. The VFR would be the more comfortable of the 2 and definitely have a better range. Seen plenty of them on the Southern X / GC. Don't think I've seen a VTR on one. Personally I like both but would love to have a VTR parked next to the Connie for the odd quick blast. Gotta love that noise they make!
But then I'd also like to have....

. I learnt alot doing it.
. I sold the bike for twice what I paid for it
. If I was to do it again it would come out heaps better
. Much more satisfying than handing the bike off to someone, giving them money and picking it up a week later.

can't argue, they are a bloody nice bike....i was looking at a couple of 05's until i got the blackbird, i just found their power to weight figures weren't that good (not bad, just not that good), especially since i'm 2-up a lot
for Monie - i might be concerned about weight, they are surprisingly heavy for a modern bike, (more than an RF! but not sure about the latest models), and possibly height also
slydesigns
5th June 2008, 10:05
They only got heavier as they got newer unfortunately. Also... the VTEC transition is a little aggressive, and about midcorner in terms of speed. Wheelspin/churp and a possible slide do result from all the info on the VFR forums.
The cam geared pre 02 not vtec model is apparently the better of the range, but doesn't look as good.

Rider is fine, bike is bent, cars only minor damaged. PT's has the bike now. Thank god for leathers, helmets, PT's recovery ute, PT's for helping, bike loving cops, overly nice rider/victim and mostly INSURANCE!
Always been GETTING hit, never actually DOING the hitting until now. I know the feeling of sickness and guilt now.
Bad luck on the bike accident. Shit happens ussually when you least need it.
VTRs are great bikes but theres a reason why Honda stopped making them! SV1000s are really cheap.
I'd go and ride a VFR. You might get off it thinking that the stuff written on the net is all bullshit.
The cam geared pre 02 not vtec model is apparently the better of the range, but doesn't look as good.
yeah, i've heard the same, but you're right, the later ones are a much nicer looking beast
how about a blackbird, seriously, you'll be hard pushed to find a bad review and they're not much beefier than a VFR

Man, just had some feedback on and pics of Sarah's engine. All I will say is be very careful who gets to work on your bikes guys. The amount of damage one rushed 'service' can do is mindboggling. Not to mention incredibly expensive if undiscovered. Find a good mechanic and stick with them. Luckily, major engine and electrical system damage was avoided this time. Another 10000 K and things would have been much worse!

Gidday. Well to start with the airbox was misaligned and not sealed to the throttle bodies. This was causing dirt and oil to be sucked into the engine and binding the throttle bearings, hence the stiff throttle action.
Next up, the coil seals around the plugs had been sloppily fitted allowing moisture and dirt into the plug tunnels, causing 'shorts', which partially explains the rough running.
The airbox drain plug was missing, allowing more road dirt into the airbox and engine.
There were unevenly and overtightened components.
All up, the combination of all this has caused a large loss of compression as dirt and corrosion have damaged the inlet valve seats.
Luckily, it was in the early stages and can be fixed.
Given any more extended riding the situation would have spread throughout the engine.
Lesson learned from this.
All it takes is a small lapse in concentration, poor product knowledge, or poor attention to detail during servicing and 10 K down the track you end up with a major issue. Which you won't know about until it's too late.

Is a worry, especially if you bought the bike with a warranty(dealer),and decided to get it serviced from a guy like Kerry who knows more than most, but isn't authorised to service the bike, thus null and voiding any claim.
Meanie
7th June 2008, 08:54
Crap thats not too good Al
Sometimes you got to wonder weather youd be better off servicing your bike yourself, at least youd know what and when has been done and if it was done properly, but then if your not trained or mechanicaly minded you could easily miss something or stuff it up with nobody to blame but yourself
Think your right, find a good mechanic and stick with him or her especialy if shes hot I have found a briliant mechanic that works on my boat motor and now wouldnt go anywhere else but my bike i am stuck with the dealer until it runs out of warantee. In all fairness to AFC they havnt let me down yet and i have had trouble free riding
Hope all works out for Sarah
Did she think about contacting previous owner and having a chat to find out who done the servicing, quite posable he has done it himself

Not good Al! The coil seals are an issue with the S3 as well. They are poorly designed and don’t fit well from factory! I discovered a rusty plug at 5000k on my bike and it was the first time the seals had been removed.
There is a fix though, with a new seal design that covers externally, not just internally. I just wonder if the Daytona is the same.

BTW. What do you do to be allowed to bling someone? I havent been able to bling you for ages yet you can me??????
straight from the faq (complete with spelling mistake :lol:);
You can only give rep 10 times every 24 hours.
You have to rep 3 more peaple before giving rep to the same person again
other than that, i dunno, i dont have any trouble blinging anyone - can you still bling other people?

Just went for a walk round to the hospital to see how he was and drop off some bike mags but unfortunately because I didn't know his surname they would not tell me even if he was still there.
Can someone PM me the surname and I'll try again later in the week.

that sir, is what you call an oxymoron.
I lost a bolt in that holds the headlight in on one side and it stressed the other side and broke a lug that is part of the fairing. Took it in to manawatu plastics today but he couldnt get his hand in to weld the underside so had to spend an hour taking the fairings off. He will patch it up tomorrow (5 min job) and then I will spend another hour putting the damn thing back together again. ARRRGGGGGGHHHHH
Bugger Lance! Scott will no doubt put it right.

His brother rang me today and i passed on the info of where it is, he was going to contact the insurance company and they will have it picked up
His Honda card was only for break downs, I thought his bin qualified for rescue service
I plan to pick up my bike from PT's on Friday finished or not. I've got shitloads to do to it like fit a new skin on one of my mufflers, replace taillight, paint frame, tank, radiator cowl and bellypan. Then swap tools over to my new Sargent seat.:niceone:
