How did the RF loose it fairings ? Did you have an accident ?

just haven't bothered to put them all back on after refitting the generator, etc, as they're going to have to come off again later this week so I can have a minor repair done to the indicator mount (was busted when I got it)

Have thought about a cruise for you guys if your interested.

Friday 25 April.Leave Palmy say 9.00 ish, leave Hawera about 11.00 to go round the Surf Highway.

Hawera to Dawson Falls about 20 mins ride,on a good day great pics can be had.

D/Falls to Opunake 20 mins for drink, onto Oakura for lunch stop say 1.00ish.

Oakura to East Egmont via Carrington rd,(comes out at Mangorei Rd and SH3)and up to East Egmont via Egmont Rd.leave about 2.00pm.

E/Egmont to Stratford Plateau takes say 20 mins, back to Stratty for fuel/drink about 3.00.

Stratford to Hawera around 4.00 ish for coffee at our place or up town for early feed if my coffee is crap.

You should be back in Palmy around 5.30 or so,depends on time at stops, could be earlier.

This can still be an overnighter if required and we have storage if needed for bikes.

We can't do Saturday ride though as Janines' son is getting married that day, gave us 3 weeks notice:devil2:,so makes it fun getting preperations going.Don't think she's preggy, mind you they have a cute son, haven't sat him on bike yet, must get him suzuki shirt to match his ford racing one.:devil2:

Sorry to Gary and Lance yesterday. Me and Lis were on a mission doing a loop from feilding - ashhurst - gorge - woodville - lunch at the Boots and Braces - Pahiatua - the track - ashhurst - cheltenham - halcombe - feilding. We didn't have time to stop so I hope the horn was a good compromise. Was going to stop in on the return loop but you both had bailed on your bikes.

A bonus having a girl rider with you is when you both get pulled up leaving the paihiatua track for doing 115kph the friendly officer waves you on your way when he sees her and says hello - she was the lead rider too!

ZXR yesterday. But its off to road runner engineering today to finally have the exhaust hanger replaced.
The CBR400RR is at (Lack of)Freedom Honda awaiting an insurance decision on the damage caused by the trucking company when they picked it up from Auckland.
The CBR250R is still at Flintoff Panel awaiting an insurance decision on the damage caused when she was rear ended.

Fortunately my florensic expertise determend it was not I who caused that fence damage. I think.....................

as long as you are sure........

just haven't bothered to put them all back on after refitting the generator,
because if he puts it all back together something else might break. Officailly it is not repaired until it is all back together and as long as the bike thinks it is still broken then it wont break anything else.

He can be my backup - snooze in the topbox until I need a break (not sure if we'd be able to trade places - I may fall out of the topbox).

Or:

he could pass me a coffee from a thermos
read the map
poke me with a stick if I doze off or wander over a white line
talk lady cops outta giving me a ticket

oh the infinite wisdom of motorised vehicle manufacturers never cease to amaze and astound

my dash lights have blown

not sure why:scratch:

Suzuki came up with a stroke of genius and designed the RF with TWO DIFFERENT SIZED BULBS

one is a ridiculously common dash bulb - two in the speedo, one in the temp gauge

the other isn't - two of these in the tacho

not a huge drama, they're being couriered overnight and they're only a few bucks each but wtf?? why in the name of all things logical and pragmatic would you use 2 different bulbs to do exactly the same job ??:eek5:

Pardon my ignorance but why would you want a bandit, the RF is as good as one, albeit earlier model than say a 02 bandit.Aside from spending an extra $4 or 5grand,the bandit isn't much better ride wise.Spoke to a guy who had a bandit as a rental in ozzie, said even though it was 04 model,he thought his 97 RF was as good a tourer.

this sat looking at test riding a couple of bikes in wangas .. but on the way there is halcombe, turakina valley road & on the way home its the fordell road (yes the crash corner) to hunterville & vinegar hill back home

plan to met at bp rangatiki st 9ish & head out 9.15 halcombe road out to marton & turakina valley road .. then to wangas & met sugi & head out towards para para or west wangas to get to some twistie bits to try the bikes on ..

then depends if ppl want to do food for lunch & fordell road out to hunterville & vinegar hill for the trip home ..

back to palmy to end with cafe stop at the usual haunt ..
Sounds to me like you should be heading to Taupo not Wanganui, much better deal on that one up there.:niceone:

Just ordered one tooth smaller front sprocket for the bike to go along with the higher profile rear tyre in the hopes that it will keep the gearing about the same, then when I go back too the original profile rear tyre i'll have to think about a speedo healer.
Apparently one of the best, not to mention cheapest mods you can do to my bike is drop a tooth on the front.

Depends what you want - I did 28,000 miles on my RF & 65,000km between my 2 Bandits. The RF is the quicker bike through the twisties but with good rubber a Bandit won't be far behind. The Bandit is a heap more comfy ride position wise (K6 seat wasn't the most comfortable though).

The RF's have a lot more vibes through the bars and after big miles this got painful for me - a did 3 GC's on mine and my hands were aching something fierce afterwards. Did a GC on each Bandit and there were much better - a lot less weight on hands + less vibes. Bandit also more economical (less revs for a given speed) and less effort to toss around (wider bars).

A very quick summary - both a heap-o-fun!

1200. With stock gearing the 1200 is pulling around 3,700 revs at 100k's. The RF about 4,500 (from memory - Yod?), right where the vibes were worst. You just have to open the taps up a bit more to avoid them...

sweet, yeah I must admit I am leaning toward the 1200, just for the less work the engine would be doing, and smother power through the 110-140km/h range for over taking without having to tap dance on the gear lever. of course haven't even ridden one yet, but with having the CBR i think I might miss the power if I get the 650.

yea is so good to be able to have that acceleration on the 1000cc's a ,find that riding the hornet then flicking back to the 600 ,you feel like you continually flicking thru the box just to do anything .(which is why i enjoy the 600 ,but sometimes you just want to sit in 6th but you just have no power )

you probly would regret getting the 650 over the 1200 especially coming from the 1100cc your riding now, mind you the newer bandits are Fuel Injected

hmm yep i can relate to that mate! mine feels like an absolute tank after riding the more " techno advanced" bikes :shit: (my 600 weights about the same as your 1100,and about 10kg more than Sarges FZ1:angry:) and its only a little 600 having to push all the weight

Would definately look at bandit 1200,had a sit on one,at local shop, was a little concerned on height of it compared to the GSX,but what probably didn't help was wearing jandals, and a smooth floor, meant it could've felt heavy, but wasn't(does that make sense?)mainly due to dread of dropping it lol. With boots on maybe more stable footprint.

Still is fun looking,no use rushin into anything.

Can understand the vibration feeling,my pillion pegs give wicked vibs if you have shoes on,but with lined boots it is ok,same for hands at times getting vibes, not major but annoying when it happens.

Have recently put a larger front sprocket on my '03 1200 bandit to increase fuel economy while two up. Now getting 20km/l on average. (bout 15 to 18 beforehand). No noticeable change to power or take off whatsoever. If you like the fuel injected 1250's though I'd go that way. Definitely more nimble than the earlier models

Continental Race Attacks on ..........Nice :devil2: and 1 lower tooth front sprocket on too, it's maybe a bit peppier but not much in it but with the Race Attack I got put on the rear being a 55 profile instead of the original 50 profile I think has counteracted most of the effect the smaller front sprocket was going to have at this point. Revs at an indicated 100kph are bang on the same as before (4000)

damn glad I called to see where you were Andrew, thought you were taking a while to catch up .. then thought you might have done another detour .. but hey at least it was not Betsy today :pinch:

well it was a great day out riding ..

left in the brrrrrrrr much much much cooler air about 7.ish off to sort horses & out to shannon, met Rottiguy & off to palmy to met with Bonez & Banditrider, plan was to head out towards Marton, Picked Oscarnz up from the turn off & a fairy direct route to Wangas vegas .. found the market where Sugi was & the guys on the gate thought we were there for the classic bike display so we found ourselves riding through Joe public .. however I did spot the lanky form that was Sugi .. so opps lets get round this corner  but the boyz got seperated a quick phone call sorted that one out

so after picking up Sugi off to the bike shop & a bandit & sv were sorted for the test ride ... test ride was good :devil2:.. shop packing a bit of a paddy when we got back 1 hour 30 mins later & bike being overpriced ... nah we are outta here ..

Pub for lunch where we met up with Nasty & Grub .. Nasty kindly through me the keys to her new bike .. :wari: ... took it out for a wee flick towards fordell .. nice bike but not that comfy for me .. so it only confirms that the Bandit is the bike for me :niceone:

a great ride home with the usual hazards .. road works & loose sheep & 1 cattle beastie .. but none presented any problems ..

As Banditrider already posted his wee issue after we went past .. & Oscar being on a really really tight schedule .. picking up her partners daughter from the pool in feilding but needing to get her car from palmy first ..

Rottiguy & I made our way to Feilding .. quick call to Oscar .. we will go to the pool & wait while you come over in the car so D is not on her own .. :sunny:

hmm now where did Banditrider get to .. ohh yeah I have that phone list in my tank bag .. quick call explained the problem so I stayed at pools, rottiguy went back to get my jumper & phone (in that roomy top box) & to assist with loading the bike on the ute .. oopps quick phone call to a friend .. can you please feed my horses & throw their covers on  whew

Met back up in Palmy & nice ride back home just got quite dark last 10 ks ..

but in all a fantastic day riding .. definately can feel that winter chill coming .. but so damn invigorating ..

It's all good :) sweet riding weather today, and now I'm sure i'm getting a bandit  just gonna test ride a new 1250 and then do some numbers to work out how many pingers = sweet cruising.

Hey banditrider sorry to hear it wasn't just a flat remote battery :weep:
Hopefully they can sort it asap.

Cheers all for the ride it was great, although now I know how easy 1200 bandits go around corners the CBR is gonna get a good :spanking:

damn glad I called to see where you were Andrew, thought you were taking a while to catch up .. then thought you might have done another detour .. but hey at least it was not Betsy today

well it was a great day out riding ..

left in the much much much cooler air about 7.ish off to sort horses & out to shannon, met Rottiguy & off to palmy to met with Bonez & Banditrider, plan was to head out towards Marton, Picked Oscarnz up from the turn off & a fairy direct route to Wangas vegas .. found the market where Sugi was & the guys on the gate thought we were there for the classic bike display so we found ourselves riding through Joe public .. however I did spot the lanky form that was Sugi .. so opps lets get round this corner  but the boyz got seperated a quick phone call sorted that one out

so after picking up Sugi off to the bike shop & a bandit & sv were sorted for the test ride ... test ride was good :devil2:.. shop packing a bit of a paddy when we got back 1 hour 30 mins later & bike being overpriced ... nah we are outta here ..

Pub for lunch where we met up with Nasty & Grub .. Nasty kindly through me the keys to her new bike .. ... took it out for a wee flick towards fordell .. nice bike but not that comfy for me .. so it only confirms that the Bandit is the bike for me

a great ride home with the usual hazards .. road works & loose sheep & 1 cattle beastie .. but none presented any problems ..

:sunny:

hmm now where did Banditrider get to .. yeah I have that phone list in my tank bag .. quick call explained the problem so I stayed at pools, rottiguy went back to get my jumper & phone (in that roomy top box) & to assist with loading the bike on the ute .. quick phone call to a friend .. can you please feed my horses & throw their covers on  whew

Met back up in Palmy & nice ride back home just got quite dark last 10 ks ..

but in all a fantastic day riding .. definately can feel that winter chill coming .. but so damn invigorating ..

awesome ride guys . it .. & also totally appreciate your input into the bike & your thoughts.

Yep second the cooler weather, took bike to work this morning, left at 9ish,shirt under jacket(leather)and was just right, coming home at noon was perfect temp wise.Need to put liner inside both jackets soon, and in pants.

Sounds like a good trip, albeit the dealer was probably trying to close up and you guys out tiki touring hehe.

Nothing worse than when you're ready to close literally, someone walks in and are JUST LOOKING,hell they've had the morning to come in lol.But then you get a day like today, nice cruisy 30k ride to and from work, almost enjoy going to work, then hometime and get away right on time, even after putting on pants over jeans etc.And every bike you pass waves out, cool to see.

Bummer about the bike Andrew, glad I've got key only. The car imobiliser is iffy on one set, have to place sender over middle of windscreen, the sensor might need upping, other remote is fine.

It was great to share a few tales with you guys at The Red, we'll have to stop meeting like this.

Nasty and I had a lovely pootle home on SH1  - they really ought to put some more corners into that road. We stopped at the Indian restaurant in Levin ... Legend! What a place. Great food, service and ambience. I'ts on days like today that you realise it's good to be alive and good to be alive on a bike.

Now ... speaking about tomorrow .... Nasty, SweetP and I are coming to Palmy for lunch (we think). Well at least we're leaving Rimutex at 10:30 with that in mind. We were thinking maybe one of those George St cafes at 12-12:30 and then bling shopping at ANZA. Or do they close at 12 on Sunday?

Well ended up yesterday having a ride up to Te Kuti (on the hornet) and returned to wanganui with a ......very torquey 1200 Harley Sportster   certainly not your average happenings on a Saturday ride but certainly made it very interesting none the less.

So another bike to add to the shed ,certainly gets people ears twitching when ya ride past :devil2: and surprisingly, boy can it go round the para's at a fair rate of knots.

Now its back to the original plan of a replacement for the katana  have narrowed it down to either an sv650s(fully faired new version
) or a 07 cbr600f , So having ridden both the bikes (not exact years but as closer as i could find them) its now up to which is better priced and most bang for the buck as i like em both for different reasons.

O if only i could get both  "Asks boss nicely for OT ":innocent:

Especially being as the cop showed up in board shorts and a shirt from the 60s with the back of a brown envelope as a notebook (must be a sign we were far from nowhere).
Kawhia Rd, Aotea Rd and Morrison Rd (was actually the road in question) all commanded a bit more respect than we gave them credit for.

haha well it was certainly well thought over prior ,its hard to justify on the keyboard  but when you ride it its not your stereotypical Harley Davidson/cruiser its a real blast to ride and its gets around the back roads brilliantly :Punk: really light and flickable! im sure long tern sportster owners will be able to elaborate but all i can say is its great to have a choice between the Harley and Suzuki depending on your mood.

Bah! Always did want a range of bikes in the shed :

One for long rides on the main roads and mile munching
and a couple for backroad blasts and joy riding .

Put quite alot of thought into this video before posting it and I have tentative approval from the rider.

there are 2 reasons I wanted to put this video up and neither of them are to bag the riders skills. IMO the accident was a fairly classic mix of what happens when you lose concentration and panic added to lack of commitment to a corner. Hopefully this will put some thought into how eaisly things can go wrong. Too much inappropriate comments and I will remove the video.

I have been an advocator of ride your own ride for a long time and I will be the first to start a red repping onslaught to any who simply want to make themselves out to be a big man and bag the riding. I would however, like people to see how quickly things can go from good to bad with a little distraction or confusion. It is very rare that you get to catch a full crash on video (thank god) so interesting to see what really happened.
I was (obviously) right behind him and got a first hand look at the accident but as soon as the smoke appeared I didnt see anything else at the time. It snapped me into an intense concentration on everything else to ensure I wasnt following him into the bank.

Really hope this doesnt turn to shit.

can I ask a noob kinda question .. did you lock the back brake & it made the front unstable resulting in the highside just watching the smoke coming off the rear tire & not understanding dynamics, thats why I am asking

cowboyz

From my perpective it went like this.

coming along the striaght over crest
Not sure where corner is
hit both brakes.
Front loads up making rear light. (because now going downhill)
lets brakes off because rear is fishtailing (thats the first squiggle)
brian cant compute exactly what is going on, where the road went. thoughts start focusing on the bank.
panic
jumps on brakes again, this time harder
Front loads up shitloads. rear gets very light
rear lock = lots o smoke.
bike out of control.
eject
wait for everything to stop.

Ooops, looks like the video has been pulled offline by someone.

Jono you weren't a long-time dirt bike rider were you? I was and instinct sent me for the back brake instead of the front. I don't know what happened next, there was just a whole bunch of people standing around asking if I had been concussed - to which of course I said "no" (duh, I was knocked out, how did I know!). I still don't know what happened, would love to have a vid of it.

You got of lightly and that's a blessing - bugger about the bike. At least you can earn some Style Points.

My thoughts....

I approached a blind crest with no knowledge of what lay beyond and although I wasn't doing excessive speed (IMO), I failed to reduce speed enough to put me in a position to deal with any situation that may have arisen on the other side of the crest. To that end, I was riding beyond my level of skill. For all i knew there could have been any one of a hundred hazards that I may not have been able to avoid. I can only say I'm lucky it was simply the lay of the road that I wasn't prepared for meaning it was simply a slide into the ditch rather than a sudden stop into a tonne or two of steel (for example).

It wasn't from riding irresponsibly in the classic sense, ie: excessive speed, or stupid actions, but it was certainly irresponsible (and selfish, when you think about it) to not have 100% of my mind on the job and at the end of the day it doesnt really matter what you did wrong; if you bin it, you bin it. I am very conscious of how much of a complete pain in the arse this incident was to many people. They are all absolute champions for sorting my shit out after my cognitive lapse. (It's nice to know you're surrounded by good people).

The corner was ugly. In that sense, I hope my crash helps initiate an upgrade or a new warning sign to help others avoid a similar fate.

I'm battered, grazed, swollen and damn sore all over but my pride is just as bruised. I'm not proud of the incident, I'm suitably ashamed. It was completely avoidable but I didn't avoid it.

"Eyes open, mind on the job, all of the time." I can only hope I can manage that from now on.

Good on ya for sticking your hand up. I know how much of a blow you took to both body and mind. I dont think it was a speed issue persue. I saw it as lesson in distraction and panic. It is all about doing things delibrately and holding back the gut reaction/survival instinst when your brain as already convinced yourself you are going to crash and you are along for the ride. You have some top people around you and will be well looked after and be back on a (kawasaki) motorcycle before you know it.

Shit that's sickening to watch, the accident waiting to happen scenario.

Thought for a moment it was the first right hander in the video, sharp corner.

Lucky no traffic coming. You can almost see where you were looking Jonno, and that's where you went.Hard to look left in that position and keep going, easy in hindsight and on paper not in real life situation.

Typical country road, narrow,no verge as such, but no speed limit reccomendation (wasn't looking for it if there),sign to say corner only,be a prick in the dark.

Don't beat yourself up too much, more a case of shit panic brake, and end. There were a few corners like that on the Forgotten Highway and you did that safely, just one of those things.

I I'm suitably ashamed. It was completely avoidable but I didn't avoid it.
You don't have anything to be ashamed of John, we ALL make mistakes because we are ALL human, it does'nt matter how much life experience, riding experience or how every way you want to look at it we will all go on making mistakes pretty much until the day we depart this mortal coil. It's how we live and learn mate, don't go beating yourself up over it.

Yeah, this is true but not really possible to do 100% of the time, see above^^^^

feels like someone dropped a car on me now....stiff as a board...ya get that

not sure whether the bike will be a write off or repairable....it's arriving back in palmy tomorrow courtesy of tri-boy (who is an absolute fookin legend, thanks mate), so i will get my first decent look at it then

cowboyz and mrs cowboyz and extended family were all bloody champions in getting my shit sorted while i was carted off in the ambulance to be poked and prodded:doctor:

Glad you are ok Yod. Hope insurance company dont muck you around. I have just been given the final payout figure for my bike after my rear ending. Only took just over a month, so fingers crossed for you.

Top post from someone who has probably been going through it in his head for a while (no video required eh?). The speed did not look excessive.

Like others have said, a good reminder to everyone to take care out there (esp on those great back country roads) and to always remember to keep the brain engaged at all times (note to self). Shit can happen fast even if you're not going fast.

Get well, get the bike sorted & get back out there!

Hi mate, no definitely not excessive speed, looks a bit like after you lost sight of the corner and then you did chanceyys trick of target fixation and locked eyes on the bank, and tried to keep it upright for as long as possible to scrub off some speed until the back let go. done a similar thing a few years ago but instead of highsiding I kept it upright until I slotted my RG250 into a 4 foot deep drain on the other side of the road just wide enough for the bike. Luckily only going slowish.
hope your insurance claim goes ok and ya don't get the run around

It's amazing how much you get knocked around isn't it. In the video your body looks to be quite gently stepping of the bike at the same time it ejects you. You stayed right way up (until the ditch) but then it looks as though the bike followed you into the ditch and gave you a nudge. At least you avoided the usual high-side action of being flipped arse over tit.

actually i was shitting myself cos i was pretty sure the bike was coming up behind me but thankfully it didnt get me, i just took a massive thump where my right shoulder crunched into the bank, so my neck, shoulders, and ribcage are the worst, mostly the right side

although somehow i got a spectacular bruise on the back of my right heel through the really solid part of my boot...wtf??!!

As an aside hows the gear come through the bin, hope the insurance don't take the excess from the contents insurance, they do sometimes, bike excess and they hit you with the contents side for clothing etc.

As an aside hows the gear come through the bin, hope the insurance don't take the excess from the contents insurance, they do sometimes, bike excess and they hit you with the contents side for clothing etc.

yeah it is two claims, so two excesses, cos the gear is under contents and the bike is a separate policy, but the excess on the gear is only $100 and i got good deals when i got it so i should come out alright

-helmet is well scraped but i was very impressed with how it come through the bin....bloody good ad for Nolan
-jacket is pretty good, a few minor tears but sod all, held up extremely well
-one big hole in the knee of the pants, thats where the gi-normous graze on my knee came from....shows you the value of triple stitching versus double
-gloves were good too, considering they aren't armoured, one hole in the palm from hitting something pretty solid, that gave me two stitches, and a couple of tears on the other that gave me a scratch or two and some minor bruising/swelling
-boots are scraped but completely intact, bloody good ad for Forma

all in all, very impressed with the gear, but it will all need to be replaced except the boots

ynot slow
15th April 2008, 21:22
Sounds promising then, helmets, gloves all stood up well in circumstances, good cheap excess then.No need to tell them the price paid for, should be ok to replace if you get $$$ can look online for gear, plenty of good stuff in NZ.Mind you with a bike to buy if through a dealer all replacement gear might be a bit cheaper.

Some policies include bike gear, with the bike, but only upto a certain $$.

Just got my renewal and bike valueation dropped $750 so not bad,and premium dropped too, even highlighted the track day part, just tell us the days to be done or similar wording.

Good to see Superman stepped off his bike easily and wasn't pounded into the embankment as a finale by his behemoth of a vindictive bike... never would have happened on your fine pedigree 400.

Surprising how slowly and gentle is all looked on film. Can imagine how violent it really was with my own history of SuperX Carnage, and thats on dirt! Glad your mostly intact, other than the cosmetic damage and the pain you'll be suffering everytime Mrs Yod forgets and hugs you.

Has the damage to the shoulder affected your ability to pwn noobs online though I wonder...

Watching you slide on your knees reminds me why I wear MX Armour under my riding pants. I mostly walked away from my t-boning into a car and flip over its roof thanks to all that gear. Armour on lower legs, knees, thighs, palm slider gloves, elbows, shoulders, back etc. Can never have enough. The Storm Trooper look is the new rage and it IS a warzone out there.

Seriously. We are both glad you're ok and were riding 1up.

Lis is getting a little freaked by the number of bins lately though. Her, you, Al and Sarah, the Firestorm on our Coro loop trip, Carmen and her Logging truck and my workmate (who owns 2 tricked up R1s and 2 bloody MV's, 1 with a red velvet seat!!) on the last CDMTC Trackday.
