Was a great ride today, I had a bloody blast. Thanks 86GSXR/Sarah and Bonez for showing me a part of the country I did not know existed. Great sites out there and wicked places for coffee and icecream.
Also thanks to cowboyz for the coffee on the return back to home, after the squirt over the saddle I needed something...

Well. Another great weekends riding. Yesterday was great, loved the Para's and the first time I've done it north on a bike. Marvelous. Great to catch Cowboyz and Meanie on the way back and another hot run into Kimbolton and Apiti. Good nite at Meanies - thanks Meanie:yes:
Feeling a bit tired this morning but was quickly persuaded to get the gears on. Bonez and ManwithaV8 met Sarah and I and we quickly decided to head east. Excellent run over the track, very interesting being in the middle of a Ulysess ride for awhile :gob: Gassed at Pahiatua and through to Pongaroa via the Makauri Gorge. I'd forgotton how beautiful this country is and how amazing the road is.
Onwards to Akitio, ahh just great to relax by the sea in this very scenic spot. Very friendly locals too!
Back to Dannevegas via Weber. Surely these roads just HAVE to be some of the best bike roads south of Wiapuk. 10 out of 10!!!
Dannas for coffee then leisurely stroll down 2 to finish off with a high powered sweep of the saddle. Cup of tea, no lie down at Cowboyz then into Bonez's for a very thorough fix it for Sarah's (Honda's) rather 'free' rear seat
Good to meet Lee, very nice Duc. Sounds great and you can sure ride it mate. Will see you out there on the rides very soon. Come and meet the rest of the locals

Will be back out very soon... Just have to sort that little clutch issue along with the speedo. Shouldn't be anything major.
I pulled out my road atlas last night and it must older than yours, the roads that we covered aren't quite up to date on the gravel areas. Will sort a new on and get that bike atlas thinghy you have..
So after a days work the Duc will get a nice clean, clutch bled and some scoping around for a new speedo cable or possibly a repair kit (I have seen them around) then all shall be thumping again..

well tonite a wee :ride: out to dogs so Betsy could have the wee service before the two big rides in the next month
Met up with English at Ashhurst & a nice steady pace on dry roads .. home made hamburgers for dinner (yum) and it was Betsy surgery time .. hmm replace plugs .. now there was a wee bet on that they would be black with oil but all things considered they were not that bad at all :D
hmmm air filter cleaned again not as bad as thought but a quick clean anyway
gear box oil well that had not been changed since I first got the bike .. hmm well the color was a cloudy grey brown color so should be better now ..
then the speedo .. hmmmm well alot of fiddling & putting the correct piece in where it should be new cable but yup the issue is still in the head of the speedo so at least we know where the issue is .. hmm but hey I dunna miss a speedo now sooooooooooooooooooooooooo  so goes back to the to do list ..
anyhow dark & a wee bit wet when we left dogs house, the 3 bikes headed out hmm quite hard to see with fogged up visor & no road markings  but slow & steady did it & we made it back out (mind you I dunna think the possum was that lucky that I hit with my front wheel :dodge: ).. said bye to English at Ashhurst & flicked on home a few spits til linton then quite heavy rain home .. but hey who cares was actually a great ride :D
cheers English for keeping me company mate appreciated it
thanks so much Bazza for dinner & working on Betsy :niceone:.. glad norman behaved himself tonite but then I doubt he would have gotten past the 3 of us to have his wicked way with betsy :killingme

Fifty buddy' seven? How did this thread get that big so quick? Get back to work you buggers! (especially you Yod!!)
Picked up VFR in auck on sat night, unfortunately didn't get much time to talk to Swoop (Paul, who I bought the bike off) as I had to head back to town to meet up with a mate who I was riding back to Hamilton with. It was a miracle that I found my back to queen street, chatted to some friendly Maori joker in town that was gob smacked that both me and my mate Mike had bought a new bike on that very day (Mike had just bought a spanking new m50 Suzuki cruiser).
Ride to Hamilton was cruisy as Mike was still breaking in the m50. Noticed a bit of a rattle in the VFRs engine which is a cause of moderate concern, but not worried too much at this stage.
Stayed in H-town sat night and sunday, hung out with mates, then about 8pm decided "hey I better get my white hide back to palmy seeing as I have work tomorrow". Jumped on the bike at eight thirty, left Hamilton, arrived 03 hours 20 mins later in Palmy....
Suffice to say the old girl still has plenty of poke in her. Got to love late sunday night riding. H to Tokaroa was sedate, but once on the western arm road (back road to Turangi) it was just me and a few sh*t scared opossums. Even when back on SH1 it was just me and the truckies, so I wasn't too worried about opening it up (Waiouru to Palmy in 55 mins...). Yee hah!!
Handling is not bad, not as sharp as the TRX but good enough to keep me happy.
TRX is still sitting in the shed, hopefully for not much longer, but it will be flaming hard to see her go, but such is life...
I can start saving for that Falco now...

Only got a GN at this stage, but would be keen to meet up for a ride near Palmy sometime. Can just sit on 100k's without a headwind for the mo.
I intent to get a whole bike sometime early next year, looking at either a bandit or a DL1000.
I got two kids and two jobs, so time to ride is at a premium, especially with stockies starting this weekend.
See yas at manfield.

Yeah, these winds have been fierce the last couple of days. They should die down just after Christmas tho! I got blown into oncoming traffic on the Taka's yesterday, and had a battle with em today. Great downwind tho, nice and smooth. The Gixxer had a great run especially with natural assistance from 40 kt tailwinds out to Ashhurst and over the Saddle. Track was fine no problems there.

Quite a bit. Stopped at each checkpoint (5), 2 extra stops for gas, 1 long stop for brekkie (30mins+) plus I was feeling a bit crook in the wee smalls and had to stop for a breather (helmet off and wander around, probably 5-10mins) a couple of times.
Definitely the slowest one I've done - the weather & some of the back roads really slowed things down. If it had been fine this one would have been a quick one.

Holy shit mate! I knew it was a big ride but thats impressive, well done. Must have been stressfull in that kind of weather. Oh, did you end up getting those Plugz for Lugz ear plugs?
Yep, got some. Here's my 2 cents about them:
Fit really well so comfortable to wear for 1000 miles
Need to put them in correctly otherwise they don't work (doh)
Not as effective as foam ones for noise but far more comfortable.
Unsure if they protect your hearing as much as disposable ones as more noise gets thru...

Cheers mate, just the answer I was looking for. Just as long as they remove most of the wind noise is what i'm after, don't want complete scilence. Sound like what I want.:niceone:

Another thing though - we were riding in pretty average conditions. Maybe if it wasn't so windy (screen in highest position also generates a bit of noise in the wind) the helmet noise would have been less...not sure be nice to go for a ride on a better day.

Did get out and about sunday, with latte stops, and managed to find the best of the weather luckily:ride:
Fun trying out Honda 2up  closest I have been to 86 in public!!! Felt like an old couple going shopping but it certainly handled us both with ease.
The GSXR was brilliant too those 80's girls still have it in them that's for sure. Raw visceral power in the GSXR but for finesse I have to take my hat off to the Daytona  86 and I are certainly having fun swapping between the bikes and comparing notes on how we think they are going.
Didn't ride GSXR but watching it fly past over pahiatua was magical and the power was unmistakeable from the pillion seat, leaping cat definately comes to mind:yes: Great fun even though we strayed no further than the local area:yes:

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. It's always a different route and you never know where you're going until you get there and they put the map up.
There's quite a few good write ups of the event starting to pop up on the Kiwi Biker. This one http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/blogs/viewblog.php?userid=9500&entry=307 by Koroj is really good. It's possible that I'm still getting the hang of fitting them correctly but I'm still not sure if they block off the ear canal as effectively. But as I say they are definitely more comfortable and it's easier to get your helmet on over them. I need to test them some more...

Only one lol.
The Gixxers rise again! I'm really looking forward to heading up to AK again for the calendar pic. Hopefully they'll let me in.
Spent the last couple of days prepping both bikes and of course test riding them. Had a ripper of a ride over the Saddle today. Sarah got lost in Woodville (long story, best not mentioned too often) so I had to ride the Honda home solo via Mangamarie and the track. Finally got the Gixxer back so then felt the need to do Halcolmbe Hill, Hunterville, and back via Vinegar Hill.
I took the Warhorse and boy she can still go for a 21 year old. 82K on the clock now, and I must say I'm quite amazed that the cheap tyre that I'd swapped over when I got the new one has held up really well. It's a no name brand called 'Road Winner' and it got really sticky through the twisties!
Sarah and I head up to Turangi tomorrow arvo after work, then will get to AK Sunday. After the shoot we'll try and get to Taumarunui for the night. Going to do the Forgotton Highway Monday am and may meet up with Ynot slow in Whanga or Stratford depending on the weather. Should be good
Have a good weekend all, stay safe and enjoy the riding :niceone:

Here's my ride report on the KB photo shoot.
Had to work Saturday, so getting after getting home around 4 Sarah and I packed up the Gixxers and headed down to the BP to gas up. Just as we left it started to piss down and didn't look like letting up whatsoever. So, on with the wets and hit the road for Turangi which was the destination for the night.
It rained heavily pretty much all the way to Taihape, and guess where the hole in the wets were? Yep. Never mind. Bloody freezing as well, but when you're on a mission these things are just part of it.
Stopped at Taihape for a quick break, then onto the desert road where it was even colder and wetter. Swapped the gloves for some dry ones and made it into Turangi and parked up at the cabins. Down to the truckstop for dinner, it's a great place that, real Kiwi Kai. Slept really well with the heater on all night to dry out the gear.
Morning broke dry and clear so it's into Taupo for brekkie and gas, then up to Tirau, Matamata, and pretty much non stop to AK.
The Gixxer's were running superbly, and it was great to have them both out together. They look real fine as a pair and I was really in the rythmm with them.
After a good run down the Southern Motorway and over the Bridge we discover that due to roadworks the sign for Devonport has been removed! Doh. So a stop just up the line, consult the map and we're heading south again to Takapuna. We spot a couple of late model Gixxers parked up and sure enough the guys are just waiting for another so we tag along down to Devonport Wharf. There's plenty of late model Gixxers and even a yellow ZX10 and everyone gets busy snapping pics. Then it's a couple of quick relocates and the shoot is done. Should be some good shots in amongst the 100's of pics that must have been taken.
Good to meet briefly some of the AK crew, and after a quick OJ and a few more pics we head south again. Destination Te Kuiti.
We'd discovered that the Gixxer's range is just over 200 kms at open road speeds. I went onto reserve at Huntly so a gas stop was necessary. Into Ngarawahia and off SH 1. This road through the King Country is bloody marvelous, although quite heavily infested and a couple a cars were unfortunate enough to have to make a donation. In real sneaky locations too.
My sixth sense was working well though and we made it through the waters with no unpleasantness.
Arrived at Te Kuiti just on nightfall and made for the camping ground. Wow, what an experience. No cabins available so we were shown into the Villa. Great place, lovely old home, ensuite, all the comforts, and a great Maori guy who owns and runs the place. Turns out he travels the world six months of the year and spends the rest running tours of the area. Even had dinner cooked by a Dutch backpacker who just happened to be a chef.
Morning. Rain. Wets. Very good run down to Taumarunui in the rain. Breakfast and texts to Tony (Ynot slow) who's leaving Hawera in the dry and clear. Great!
Now for the moment we'd been waiting for. The Forgotton Highway. As we jump on the bikes, the skies start to clear and the sun eases through the mist. Start the run onto the FH and it's all good, road is just heaven, and starting to steam as it dries off.
It winds and twists into the heart of the King Country, over ridges, down into the valleys, up over the saddles, and through the most incredible first generation native bush and river systems. I was highly tempted to go for a dive into some of the pools, but think I will leave that for summer. The tunnel was very cool and we got some great shots of the bikes going back and forth a few times, the motors sounding really good bouncing off the walls. The gravel is a piece of cake, really hard packed and happened to be damp. No problems whatsoever.
Then it's into Whangamomona where we meet up with Ynot slow, Cressie and Mrs Cressie plus numerous other bikers and patrons enjoying the sunshine at the Hotel. The publican makes us very welcome indeed, very biker friendly, owns a Blackbird in fact. We get the guided tour and spend a very pleasant hour shooting the breeze.
Then it's saddle up time and back into even more twistier twists, up and downhill. Just superb and we get some really great pics! The top of the ridge where one bursts into view of both mountains is mindblowing!!! I manage to leave behind a few filings of Gixxer exhaust pipe as well lol.
We meet a bloke on a beautifully restored 65 Triumph Thunderbird and have great fun chasing each other down into Stratford
Then it's say goodbye to the Cressies and we head down to Hawera for a fantastic bbq at Tony and Jeanines place. Thanks you guys, that was a great way to finish off a really fantastic day! Really appreciated it  See you down here soon :first:

Leave Hawera just after nightfall and have a good clear run home. Total trip 1201 trouble free kms :woohoo: :niceone:
Pics soon

LOL on the quote Sarge  Cheers, it was a blast, we must do a group ride on it again! I'll organise a post. The gravel was easy going, prob no more than 10 -15 km I think. Getting pics together now, bloody dial up grrr

I tell ya Sarge, you'd be crazy not too. It's got to be one of the best roads in the Island. The gravels a breeze seriously. It's hard to describe just how great the whole road is. Standby for a few pics

I have done that road on the Sprint, 2 up, luggage, road recently graded and the rear tyre deflating. I didn't realise till I got back on the seal that the reason the back end was squirming around had little to do with loose gravel and more to do with the 10 PSI left in the tyre.
You won't have any hassles on the Ace and as 86 says, it's well worth it. The gravel stretch is 14 km long.
If you do it on your own, stay on the road. There are some places where, if you went off, you may never be found.

It really is an incredible road, and totally agree with you about staying on it. Yes, one could quite easily disappear in that country. Cheers :niceone:

Yeah cheers mate, not worried about making it through, just not interested in doing endless k upon k of metal road. 16 clicks is do-able though if the pay off is such wicked scenery and so forth.
Traveled more metal road in my life than I really care for on a road bike anyway, if I was riding something more suitable then bring it on but i'm not so....I can do a bit but strictly "a bit" for this guy.

The Forgotton gravel is really no big deal. In fact, the worst part of it was getting the bikes dirty after looking so clean from the rain.

told you forgotten highway rocked huh? After we finish travelling all over the place I would like to do a forgotten highway/awakino/ 8 mile in a day. That would be a fantastic ride.
but for now we have Taupo this weekend, wellington next weekend, Gisborne the following weekend and then Hamilton the weekend after that so could be tidied up for a little bit.

Was talking to some guys at the Whanga pub, were saying the only thing wrong with the roads around Taranaki, unlike Palmy is we tend to go out and back same route, you guys can go out say vinegar hill and back maybe paraparas or other ways, more option of a loop run.We can do a loop but mostly around mountain,or say south to Palmy and areas, but come home still via sh3,mind you could go to Wanganui, paraparas,Taumaranui, forgotton highway and home,or up to Awakino and home forgotten highway.I feel a plan in motion, bad ,bad, naughty thoughts, cool.:scooter:
